Police were taken on a chase and four people were arrested when RCMP received reports of a theft in progress while investigating break and enters on Twin Lakes Road.

Darryn Allen Nelson, 40, Brian William Cooper, 27, Derek John Ledgard, 22 and Chelsey Anne Thorstenson, 28 were arrested on Dec. 23 and are facing charges related to multiple break-ins in the Twin Lakes area.

Nelson is facing charges including flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and a breach of probation; Thorstenson is charged with possession of a controlled substance; Ledgard is charged with possession of stolen prop-erty under $5,000 and theft under $5,000 and all four suspects are charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

While investigating two break and enters near Twin Lakes Road on Dec. 23 RCMP officers were notified of another attempted theft by a resident of Grand Oro Road and that four suspects fled in a Mitsubishi Lancer with no license plates. The vehi-cle was reportedly involved in an attempted theft of the resident’s John Deere Gator.

Police followed the Lancer for several kilometres and attempted to stop the vehicle with a road block which led RCMP on a chase through the area.

The suspects threw a shotgun out of the window of the vehicle while fleeing the scene, police said.

The suspects ran out of road on Saddlehorn Drive in Kaleden and all occupants of the vehicle fled on foot in various directions. Police set up a perimeter and multiple units tracked the suspects down and a police dog squad captured the final male after a five-kilometre track.

Ledgard attempted to steal a truck after fleeing the Lancer, police said, and was found with the wal-let of the owner of the truck on his person upon his arrest.

Ledgard had an outstanding warrant out of Penticton, Thorstenson had an outstanding warrant out of Chase. Police said all suspects were involved in previous break and enters on Twin Lakes Road in the early morning hours. RCMP said a vehicle search turned up multiple stolen items. Thorstenson, who lives in Keremeos, was released on bail.

Ledgard and Nelson face bail hearings on Jan. 6 in Penticton.

Stef Laramie Laura Luvich and four-year-old Riley enjoyed the great outdoors while taking a spin on the ice rink at one of the free skates over the weekend.

Wainwright retires after three decades in drug store business

Submitted During her retirement party Jean Wainwright, middle, receives flowers from Walter Despot, left, and Barb Despot.

Tara Bowie Review Staff

The local drug store sold cigarettes when Jean Wainwright first started work at what is now called Pharmasave 36 years ago.

A retirement party was held last Wednesday to mark Wainwright’s lengthy career at the store.

“There’s been a lot of changes, that’s for sure,” Wainwright said while eating lunch in the back of the store.

She started at the store when she was 35. She’d been babysitting at home to earn money while raising her four children.

“Walter came to me and asked me if I would consider working at the store and I thought it was a darn good idea,” she said. “It was nice to go to a steady job. I was full-time right from when I started. Walter took care of the pharmacy and his wife Barb came in and took care of the receiving and other things. There were two clerks when I started and the Despots.”

When she started in 1979 there wasn’t a computer system like there is today. Everything had to be price marked and then it was rung into the till manually when customers were checking out.

The store was about half its current size and

mainly focussed on prescription medication and selling of over the counter medications and other health related products.

About 18 years ago the Despots sold the store to Pharmasave.

“There was a lot of concern when they sold. The employees were worried things were really going to change but they haven’t. Pharmasave has been a great company to work for. There was nothing to worry about,” she said.

Wainwright has been the head cashier basi-cally since the day she started. She’s trained every cashier who’s worked at the store for decades.

“I’m going to miss the companionship the most. I’ve met many people working here and worked with so many friends,” she said.

Caroline Cottrill, manager of Pharmasave said Wainwright will be deeply missed by the staff and customers.

“She is going to be very difficult to replace. She has incredible work ethic and a great sense of humour. She’ll be really missed around here,” she said.

Wainwright said she plans spend time with her grandchildren and spend time relaxing in her retirement.

I first met Stephen Harper when he was running for the Canadian Alliance leadership in 2002.

Speaking to a group of Fraser Valley members concerned that the party had split over the leadership of Stockwell Day, Harper didn’t mince words because a local reporter had showed up on a Saturday morn-ing. He explained his predic-tion that no matter who leads the conservative movement started by Preston Manning, the national media would work against it.

“The press is owned by big-L liberals and staffed by small-L liberals,” Harper said. “Preston was too cerebral; Stock was not cerebral enough. I’m not sure where I will be, but the media will always be on the other side.”

Harper’s cold war with national media is a theme that runs through his decade as prime minister, peaking in 2015 with the most slanted election coverage I’ve ever witnessed. The celebration continues over Justin Trudeau’s victory, with the supposedly non-partisan federal bureaucracy cheering along with much of the national media.

Harper’s assessment of major newspaper ownership is

no longer accurate, except for the Toronto Star. But the dying tradition of owners looking up from their accounting ledgers to endorse a political party continued, with the Postmedia chain and the Globe and Mail pointing out that Trudeau’s rash promises didn’t add up.

Endorsements were a brief interruption in the media assault on Harper’s record. His govern-ment’s plan to welcome 10,000 refugees, unveiled way back in January 2015, was portrayed as heartless and feeble, while Trudeau’s 25,000 by Christmas represented the generous char-acter of the true Canada.

As it turns out, the Liberals have been hard pressed to reach even the 10,000 mark. But they’ve put out a rash new promise to make it 50,000 at

some point in the future, so the media’s new-found message of sunshine, hope and change continues.

Those modest $10 billion annual deficits that Trudeau promised, and Harper warned against? Borrowing and spend-ing will far exceed that, but we’re assured that’s because they were based on inflated Conservative financial fore-casts.

In fact, independent private sector forecasts are now the key reference for government budgets at the federal and pro-vincial level. None of them predicted the further slump in energy prices that continued through 2015.

And cooking the books before an election isn’t real-ly possible any more, thanks to the establishment of the Parliamentary Budget Office. That was a Harper innovation, along with scheduled elections.

And that Trudeau pledge to raise taxes on the wealthiest Canadians and use the proceeds to finance a tax cut for the middle class? That one didn’t add up either. For one thing, wealthy people have a variety of legal ways to reduce their taxable income.

Here’s an actual front-page headline from the Globe and

Mail, reporting this unfortu-nate fact, well after the elec-tion: “The way Liberals gauged response to new tax rate explains gap.” So it was just an understandable oversight, you see.

Trudeau’s star turn in Paris, where he pronounced that “Canada is back” in the battle to control the world’s weather? The official submission from his bloated delegation to the UN climate meetings was actu-ally the existing Conservative plan, which includes phasing out coal-fired electricity gen-eration.

Harper generally represent-ed a preference for the indi-vidual over the state, a concept that at one time was known as “liberalism.” This was illustrat-ed by his preference for parents rather than a nanny state to administer child care.

He advocated free trade, small government and low taxes. We’ll see how that leg-acy survives the new govern-ment and its media cheering section.

The Liberal government is sure to take some abuse over its plan to make spanking illegal in Canada.

That’s because while most people of good sense would agree it’s wrong to “hit” a child, as many as 70 per cent of Canadians are okay with “spanking” a child.

There are no available opinion polls on how many people can tell the difference.

Hint: there isn’t one.At present the Criminal Code of Canada allows

parents and guardians, including teachers, to use rea-sonable force as a means of correction for children between the ages of 2 and 12. Force is only abuse if the parent uses an instrument, strikes a child in the head or leaves a mark.

While child advocates have been lobbying for the repeal of “the spanking law,” (Section 43 of the Code) since it was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2004, the recent discussion falls out of an election promise by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to imple-ment all of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The TRC calls corporal punishment “a relic of a discredited past [that] has no place in Canadian schools or homes.

More than thirty countries have already outlawed spanking, recognizing its potential to cause children long term harm.

A 2012 study from the University of Manitoba suggests that children who are spanked can experi-ence the sting far into adulthood, and are more likely to develop mental illnesses including depression, mania and alcohol and drug addiction.

Mindsets towards the essential wrongness of spanking children are difficult to change.

For one thing, spanking tends to be effective in the short term. Whopping a toddler on the tush as a means of getting him to brush his teeth will likely result in excellent dental health.

So will asking nicely, or employing behavior management techniques, or using and following through on consequences, or actually helping the child to complete the task, although all those things take longer.

Spanking is learned, literally at Mom and Dad’s knee.

It’s easier to defend the practice with the line “I was spanked and I turned out okay” than it is to examine spanking’s painful roots and results.

It may be easy and it may be a programmed part of a generation’s parenting toolbox, but spanking – hitting – a child is just wrong.

Children deserve all the protections of the law that Canadians enjoy as adults. (Spanking an adult is illegal.)

Advocates of “spare the rod and spoil the child” might want to compare how they feel about spank-ing with how they feel about the treatment of other helpless beings.

For example, it would not be surprising at all to learn that 70 per cent of Canadians feel it’s definitely NOT okay to spank a dog.

Take your vitamin B-12 orally? Many people receive vitamin B-12 injections monthly. For some people, taking enough of the vitamin orally can do the same thing. Orally, people absorb only about 1% of the dose but if 1000 mcg is given daily, this provides enough of the vitamin to do the job. Your doctor can tell you if this would

be good for you.Zinc Lozenges shorten the duration of a cold

At this time of year, we are often asked if zinc lozenges are useful to treat the common cold. Evidently, the lozenges with the higher doses of zinc are the better choice and have been proven to slightly shorten the duration of a cold. A daily dose from the lozenges of at least 75 mg seems to give the

better results. No STDs from public washrooms

Some people worry about using public washrooms, afraid they might pick up a sexually-transmitted disease (STD) There is no worry. STDs cannot be obtained from toilet seats. However, good hygiene after using the facilities is important. This includes thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water, drying well and not touching your face

until after hand-washing.Ask before using outdated medication

If a medication just passes its expiry date, it still should contain at least 90% of active ingredient. However, using an out of date medication will not be supported by the manufacturer if anything goes wrong. For maximum benefit, use medications that are within their expiry date. If in doubt,

When you receive, you feel like giving and when you give, you always get back what you put out, your kindness, your thoughtfulness, your consideration for others, in ways and from sources you would not expect! When we help others, we really are helping ourselves!I was returning from a trip to France recently, I had overloaded my suitcase by 3kg as I was bringing back lots of food and presents. So when I came to the check-in and the girl told me that I had to pay extra, I wasn’t surprised and I asked her how much. She told me that I had to go back upstairs to the Aer Lingus desk and that the fee was €24. Off I went to the counter, there was a young man there in his early 30S counting his cash very carefully. My initial thought was that he didn’t have enough mon-ey.

I told the girl behind the desk that my suitcase was overweight and that I owed money. She printed a sheet, I gave her a €50 note, She gave me some change and without checking it, I thanked her and headed for the lift. It was only then that I thought of checking it and noticed that she had given me €42 change. She had only charged me €8. I decided that it would be better to be honest straight away as otherwise it would show up later and I’d end up being late for my flight as I’d be trying to sort it out. I turned back and told the girl about her error. She apologized, thanked me for my honesty and typed another page on her computer.

Meanwhile, the poor lad beside me was still counting his money. He ap-proached me and in very bad English, even worse than mine, told me that he was short €20 for his flight home. I don’t know where he was from but he seemed really genuine. My first instinct, I am ashamed to say, was to tell him I couldn’t help him thinking that €20 is a lot of money. As I was turning away, a very bizarre phenomenon happened. Independently of my will, I opened my....
