Far wayWar

World War I was foughtin Europe 15 000kilometres away but

the people of Brisbanealso suffered because ofthe war.

Many young men andwomen went to the warand too many of themdidnt return.

Brisbane at thetime of WorldWar IAustralia was a brandnew nation. Brisbanewas opening up to freesettlers. Many people inKenmore, Brookfield,

Pullenvale and Moggillworked as farmers,loggers, and miners.

fter the Great WarAfter the war, some of the young men returnedhome but many did not.

Even those who did come home were injured orsuffered because of the bad memories.

Life was hard for the families.

MemorialA memorial was erectedto honour all the youngmen who had fought inthe war.

It was placed at the

corner of Moggill Roadand Brookfield Road.

The dirt road wentaround the statue.

The memorial cost 265and was unveiled on 3July 1920.

The base was built by APetrie & Son.

War in 1914 1918.

The DiggerThe statue on top of thememorial is a digger.

Digger was the wordused to refer to thesoldiers in World War I.

He wears a slouch hat

with an emu featherand leather ridingboots.

ChangesThe memorial has beenraised 3 times due tothe changing levels of

the road.It was moved to theK e n m o r e V i l l a g ecarpark in 1969 andmoved again in October1988.

It was restored in 1987.

We still rememberAlmost 100 years after theGreat War started, thepeople of Kenmore stillremember the terrible war.We remember the bravesoldiers who fought and

died in the war.We remember the soldierswho came back and whowere never the same.We remember the people ofKenmore who had worked

hard during and after thewar to keep the districtgoing.We pray that we will live inpeace.
