A self-drive touring route of Glenelg Shire’s War Memorials, Avenues of Honour and other sites established in acknowledgement of ex-service men and women from south-west Victoria.
The Memorial Trail passes through coastal regions in the south to river regions in the west to rolling hills in the north, and through the towns, villages and settlements that were once home to these brave men and women.

19. War Memorial and Avenue of HonourIntersection of Maud and High St, Merino The Merino War Memorial was unveiled in 1918 to honour the men of Merino and District who fought in World War I. It now commemorates those who served in various conflicts. The avenue of honour was planted in 1932.
21. Avenue of HonourIntersection of Portland-Casterton Rd and Buckingham St, Digby This World War I memorial Elm avenue was originally planted in 1917 with 70 trees. A further 21 trees were planted in 1918. There are now 97 trees in the avenue. The original plaques and timber guards were replaced with new plaques in 1991. A peace tree situated at the north- west corner of the Portland - Casterton Road intersection marks peacetime (1914-1918).
24. Gallipoli Pine and Heywood War MemorialIntersection Hunter St and Henty Hwy, Heywood A tall granite obelisk was dedicated in 1920 to the ‘men who served the Empire’ and gave their lives. Additional commemorative inscriptions were added for conflicts between 1930 and 1973. A memorial to James Rogers, V.C. is located adjacent. A Gallipoli Lone Pine was donated in 1994 by E.R. Dawson ‘in memory of fallen comrades from all wars’.

Avenue Of HonourIntersection of Blackwoods Rd and Casterton-Portland Rd, Hotspur In 1918, 40 Brachychiton acerfolius (Kurrajong) trees were planted by the Hotspur community ‘as living monuments to the memory of the great sacrifices made by their gallant soldiers’ in the Great War. In 2001 a new brass plaque with the names of these local soldiers was mounted on to a large boulder.
20. War MemorialCondah-Coleraine Rd (near Tahara-Merino Rd intersection), Tahara The Tahara War Memorial commemorates 38 local men and 1 nurse who served in World War I. Unveiled in 1919, the memorial includes a tall granite obelisk, cast iron fence and flag pole.
22. Memorial ParkIntersection of Portland-Casterton Rd and Simpson St, Digby Opened in 1993, this park commemorates those who served in World War II. A peace tree planted in the park commemorates the South-East Asian and Vietnam conflicts.
25. Memorial GatesHeywood and District Memorial Hospital 21 Barclay St, Heywood The memorial gates located at the entrance to Heywood Rural Health include individual plaques dedicated in 1953 to 12 fallen soldiers from World War II.
15. Memorial GatesDartmoor Primary School, 76 Greenham St, Dartmoor Memorial gates at the entrance to the school commemorate local residents who served in World War I.

Gallipoli Pine and Dartmoor and District Avenue of Honour (Memorial Carvings)Intersection of Greenham and Ascot St, Dartmoor The avenue, planted in 1918 includes a number of Atlantic cedar trees, both living and dead. The dead trees have been carved into sculptures in commemoration of those who served in World War I. The sculptures created by Kevin Gilders include Sad News, The Nurse, The Boy at War, At Arms, Three Services, Over the Top, Rest in Peace, Parting and The Game.Located at the end of the Avenue of Honour at the Village Green is a Gallipoli Lone Pine and plaque.

The Casterton War Memorial comprises a tall granite obelisk on a granite base with inscriptions commemorating local residents who served in various conflicts.

18. War MemorialPortland-Casterton Rd, Sandford The Sandford War Memorial was originally erected to honour the men of Sandford who served in World War I. Additional plaques were added for later conflicts.
3. WWII Memorial Lookout Tower2 Wade St, Portland
Entry fees apply. Open 9am to 4pm every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Under the Australia Remembers Program this obsolete water tower, built in the 1930s, now commemorates social and military history. As well as great views from the top of the tower, there are a number of displays of military history focusing on local involvement in World War II.
1 . Memorial GatesSt James’ Anglican Church, 7155 Princes Hwy, Tyrendarra Memorial Gates at the entrance to the Anglican Church commemorate five local servicemen who died in World War II.
5. Portland RSL (Sub-branch)Corner of Percy and Gawler St, Portland
Open 10 am to 12 noon Tuesday and Thursday. A number of honour boards, photographs and memorabilia are displayed in the hall.
2. War MemorialPrinces Hwy, Narrawong A war memorial erected in memory of the service men and women who served, died and suffered in various conflicts.
6. War MemorialMemorial Triangle, Cliff St, Portland (Council office) A number of memorials are situated in front of the Glenelg Shire Council office, including a large white marble statue of a World War I soldier unveiled in 1930. Since 1935, floral tributes have been displayed at the Memorial Triangle on Anzac Day.
4. The Narthex, Memorial Plaques and Memorial WindowSt Stephen’s Church, corner of Percy and Julia St, Portland
Located within the church are a number of plaques, a memorial window and The Narthex dedicated as a war memorial.
11. Avenue of Honour Service road in front of former state school, Winnap-Nelson Rd, Drik Drik The avenue includes approximately 15 Moreton Bay Fig trees planted in 1918 and a stone marker to commemorate World War I.
12. Memorial GateDrik Drik Cemetery, Winnap-Nelson Rd, Drik Drik Memorial Gates at the entrance to the Cemetery commemorate those who served in World Wars I and II. The gates were originally erected at the site of the Drik Drik Primary School and the plaques were re-erected at the cemetery when the school closed.
10. Memorial GateNelson Cemetery,Huebner Rd, Nelson The War Memorial Wall at the entrance to the Nelson Cemetery was unveiled in 2006 and commemorates servicemen who served in World Wars I and II. Twenty six people are honoured on the plaques.
7. Vietnam Veterans’ GardenCliff St, Portland (Council office) Located near the Memorial Triangle, these gardens commemorate those who served, suffered and died in the Vietnam war.
9. Gallipoli Pine Botanic Gardens, 1 Glenelg St, Portland Located within Portland’s Botanic Gardens, established in 1857, is a Gallipoli Lone Pine planted and dedicated in 1992.
8. Prisoners of War MonumentCliff St, Portland (Council office) Located near the Memorial Triangle, a number of plaques commemorate the men and women who suffered as prisoners of war in various conflicts.
13. Avenue of HonourIn front of former state school, Princes Hwy, Greenwald This avenue of honour includes 23 Radiata pine trees, planted in 1918 to commemorate those who served in World War I. In 2014 a new memorial plaque, stone and flag pole were erected.

24. Gallipoli Pine and Heywood War MemorialIntersection Hunter St and Henty Hwy, Heywood A tall granite obelisk was dedicated in 1920 to the ‘men who served the Empire’ and gave their lives. Additional commemorative inscriptions were added for conflicts between 1930 and 1973. A memorial to James Rogers, V.C. is located adjacent. A Gallipoli Lone Pine was donated in 1994 by E.R. Dawson ‘in memory of fallen comrades from all wars’.
23. Avenue Of HonourIntersection of Blackwoods Rd and Casterton-Portland Rd, Hotspur In 1918, 40 Brachychiton acerfolius (Kurrajong) trees were planted by the Hotspur community ‘as living monuments to the memory of the great sacrifices made by their gallant soldiers’ in the Great War. In 2001 a new brass plaque with the names of these local soldiers was mounted on to a large boulder.
20. War MemorialCondah-Coleraine Rd (near Tahara-Merino Rd intersection), Tahara The Tahara War Memorial commemorates 38 local men and 1 nurse who served in World War I. Unveiled in 1919, the memorial includes a tall granite obelisk, cast iron fence and flag pole.
22. Memorial ParkIntersection of Portland-Casterton Rd and Simpson St, Digby Opened in 1993, this park commemorates those who served in World War II. A peace tree planted in the park commemorates the South-East Asian and Vietnam conflicts.
25. Memorial GatesHeywood and District Memorial Hospital 21 Barclay St, Heywood The memorial gates located at the entrance to Heywood Rural Health include individual plaques dedicated in 1953 to 12 fallen soldiers from World War II.
15. Memorial GatesDartmoor Primary School, 76 Greenham St, Dartmoor Memorial gates at the entrance to the school commemorate local residents who served in World War I.
17. War Memorial636 Casterton-Edenhope Rd, Wando Vale The war memorial honours local residents who served in World War I and the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
14. Gallipoli Pine and Dartmoor and District Avenue of Honour (Memorial Carvings)Intersection of Greenham and Ascot St, Dartmoor The avenue, planted in 1918 includes a number of Atlantic cedar trees, both living and dead. The dead trees have been carved into sculptures in commemoration of those who served in World War I. The sculptures created by Kevin Gilders include Sad News, The Nurse, The Boy at War, At Arms, Three Services, Over the Top, Rest in Peace, Parting and The Game.Located at the end of the Avenue of Honour at the Village Green is a Gallipoli Lone Pine and plaque.
16. War MemorialsBryan Park, Corner of Henty and Russell St, Casterton The Boer War Memorial comprises a cast iron sculpture on a sandstone block, unveiled in 1903. The Casterton War Memorial comprises a tall granite obelisk on a granite base with inscriptions commemorating local residents who served in various conflicts.
16a. Avenue of HonourGlenelg Highway, Casterton The World War I avenue of honour was planted in 1918, originally comprising 50 Elm trees.
18. War MemorialPortland-Casterton Rd, Sandford The Sandford War Memorial was originally erected to honour the men of Sandford who served in World War I. Additional plaques were added for later conflicts.
3. WWII Memorial Lookout Tower2 Wade St, Portland
Entry fees apply. Open 9am to 4pm every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Under the Australia Remembers Program this obsolete water tower, built in the 1930s, now commemorates social and military history. As well as great views from the top of the tower, there are a number of displays of military history focusing on local involvement in World War II.
1 . Memorial GatesSt James’ Anglican Church, 7155 Princes Hwy, Tyrendarra Memorial Gates at the entrance to the Anglican Church commemorate five local servicemen who died in World War II.
5. Portland RSL (Sub-branch)Corner of Percy and Gawler St, Portland
Open 10 am to 12 noon Tuesday and Thursday. A number of honour boards, photographs and memorabilia are displayed in the hall.
2. War MemorialPrinces Hwy, Narrawong A war memorial erected in memory of the service men and women who served, died and suffered in various conflicts.
6. War MemorialMemorial Triangle, Cliff St, Portland (Council office) A number of memorials are situated in front of the Glenelg Shire Council office, including a large white marble statue of a World War I soldier unveiled in 1930. Since 1935, floral tributes have been displayed at the Memorial Triangle on Anzac Day.
4. The Narthex, Memorial Plaques and Memorial WindowSt Stephen’s Church, corner of Percy and Julia St, Portland
Located within the church are a number of plaques, a memorial window and The Narthex dedicated as a war memorial.
11. Avenue of Honour Service road in front of former state school, Winnap-Nelson Rd, Drik Drik The avenue includes approximately 15 Moreton Bay Fig trees planted in 1918 and a stone marker to commemorate World War I.
12. Memorial GateDrik Drik Cemetery, Winnap-Nelson Rd, Drik Drik Memorial Gates at the entrance to the Cemetery commemorate those who served in World Wars I and II. The gates were originally erected at the site of the Drik Drik Primary School and the plaques were re-erected at the cemetery when the school closed.
10. Memorial GateNelson Cemetery,Huebner Rd, Nelson The War Memorial Wall at the entrance to the Nelson Cemetery was unveiled in 2006 and commemorates servicemen who served in World Wars I and II. Twenty six people are honoured on the plaques.
7. Vietnam Veterans’ GardenCliff St, Portland (Council office) Located near the Memorial Triangle, these gardens commemorate those who served, suffered and died in the Vietnam war.
9. Gallipoli Pine Botanic Gardens, 1 Glenelg St, Portland Located within Portland’s Botanic Gardens, established in 1857, is a Gallipoli Lone Pine planted and dedicated in 1992.
8. Prisoners of War MonumentCliff St, Portland (Council office) Located near the Memorial Triangle, a number of plaques commemorate the men and women who suffered as prisoners of war in various conflicts.
13. Avenue of HonourIn front of former state school, Princes Hwy, Greenwald This avenue of honour includes 23 Radiata pine trees, planted in 1918 to commemorate those who served in World War I. In 2014 a new memorial plaque, stone and flag pole were erected.
