Kelly has been in the insurance business for the past 40 years. Having graduated from the first Insurance Program at Mohawk College, he started with Merit Insurance in Toronto, followed with Commercial Union in Toronto, Firemen’s Fund in Toronto, Wharton & Baird Insurance Brokers in Waterdown, Mainway Insurance Brokers in Burlington, McArter Insurance Brokers in Burlington, Utter-Morris Insurance Brokers in Burlington. Many of his early years were spent as a field man in the Niagara Peninsula, and was known by all.
Kelly is a veteran of this Insurance Hockey Tournament, starting with the early years of the Tournament, where it originated in Lucan, Ontario. His teams had great success, winning the “A” Division for many, many years. Not without some notoriety – Kelly was not one to let an opposing player get by him, and often included a big hook or slash to even up the competition. And taken offence by many, the most famous being the puck throwing and yelling match between Kelly and Sam Patterson, then coach for the Anglo-Gibraltar team. Ask any of the old guard from those early days – it was a classic.
Below is a team picture of the championship team from 1986. I am sure you will remember some of those players “fondly” – NOT!
Though Kelly had heart problems, angina, for the past few years, it did not stop him from playing 2 to 3 times a week. And still at that same slow pace – I don’t think he was any slower for his heart condition.
It was still a surprise when he suffered a stroke. He never recovered, and passed away a few days later, on January 9, 2009. Kelly leaves behind his wife Deborah, and 4 fine young sons and daughter, Neil 29, Ryan 21, Sean 19 and Keli 17, and not to forget the pet pup Jake.
He will always be remembered for the “NO SOCKS”, winter or summer. Kelly was a “one of a kind”.

Dear Industry Friends, Participants and Sponsors,
The 2009 Ontario General Insurance Hockey Tournament is upon us and we hope you have a safe and enjoyable weekend. There are 40 teams entered into five divisions and over 500 insurance professionals participating throughout the weekend. All of the proceeds from the event are being donated again to Big Brothers and Big Sister Agencies (of South Niagara and Fort Erie) and Camp McGovern. Over the last six years $175,000 has been raised through the generous support of our participants and major sponsors!
This event would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of the committee members and volunteers who have enthusiastically devoted their time to make this tournament successful. Thank you again for your continued support of a fantastic event and we will see you in Waterloo in 2010!

Our Thanks and Congratulations
Camp McGovern sincerely thanks the organizing committee from South Niagara for your exceptional effort and assistance during the past 3 years. The continued support from this event has helped us expand programs and increase enrollment each summer. It costs $400 to have a child spend a week at Camp McGovern but we only charge sponsoring agencies $300 per camper week. This event and others pro-vides a lot of sponsorship so we can keep camper fees low and enroll a full camp each summer.
With improvements in facilities and programs, more chil-dren are returning in subsequent years. The population of campers at McGovern is getting older and the larger number of teenagers has led to an increased demand for our young leaders programs. This spring we will be build-ing 2 new cabins to host the increased numbers.
This leadership program is completed in 2 phases. In the first year, 15 year old qualified campers are hosted in a 2 week “Leadership Training” program. After graduation they are invited to attend a 4 week “Councilor In Training” pro-gram the following summer. Our sponsoring agencies find it extremely rewarding when one of their children, a child that might not have been able to attend camp at all, ends up with a summer job at Camp McGovern or perhaps at another camp as often is the case.
Children from over 25 communities in southwestern Ontario attend Camp McGovern each summer so a provincial event like the Ontario General Insurance Hockey Tournament is such a nice fit. Your support has made much of our success possible and has assisted us in following our mission statement.
Again, we thank you.

A Heartfelt Thank You for All of Your Support
The Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies of South Niagara and Greater Fort Erie wish to extend much gratitude and appreciation to the organizers, participants and sponsors of the 2009 OGI Hockey Tournament. All of your support truly impacts the many children and families we serve in our communities in such a meaningful way.
Landmark studies and research has shown that there are so many benefits from our programs on the children we serve and that “mentoring” does work. - Our “Littles” go on to graduate from highschool at a rate of 20% higher than the national average- “Littles” were 53% less likely than their peers to skip school- “Littles” are 46% less likely than their peers to initiate drug use- 78% of “Littles” who come from a social assistance background no longer rely on this form of income when they become adults
Also, of the children who receive matches in our program;- 91% feel better about themselves- 90% get along better with other children- 82% develop a better relationship with their teacher- 76% show improved grades- 67% have a better sense of right and wrong
Without any form of government funding, our agencies rely on charitable contributions, fund raising events and 3rd party events such as the OGI Tournament to serve more children in our communities.
Between our two agencies, we are serving more children than ever in 2009, with the continuation of a new program in Welland called “Go Girls” and in Fort Erie, re-introducing the “In-School Mentoring Co-Operative Education Program” and “Stepping Stones”, a social skills program for children in our local schools. Our work at Big Brothers Big Sisters is to RECRUIT, CREATE, BUILD and SUPPORT these mentoring relationships. As our wait list of children grows, we are constantly striving to recruit more volunteers to help serve the needs in our communities. We play a very important role in seeing that every child who is in need of a mentor, has a mentor.
Again, we thank all of you for your hard work and commitment to this tournament. The contribution that you make to our organizations goes a long way in helping us to reach our goals and serve more children. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
