Port Colborne and the Welland Canal share a closely entwined history with one another. Port Colborne was established as a settlement when the Welland Canal was extended from Port Robinson to Lake Erie in 1833. The presence of the canal through the middle of the community has shaped the local economy. To this day, some of Port Colborne’s major businesses rely on the canal for cargo movement.

Port Colborne is the only location along the Welland Canal to follow the original canal route. Visitors can see remnants of earlier canals right next to modern ships or check out the Clarence Street Lift Bridge, one of three remaining lift bridges operating on the

Welland Canal. View walls of the old guard locks from the second and third Welland Canals and abutments of a swing bridge that once crossed the canal.

The Port Promenade (along the side of the Welland Canal) is an excellent place to watch ships pass into Lake Erie, or visit Lock 8 Gateway Park to see ships from an elevated viewing platform as they pass through the southernmost lock on the Welland Canal and the second longest canal lock in the world! The Lock 8 Gateway Park also features a uniquely designed “Algoport” Skate and Bike Park which has been styled to resemble a freight ship.Visit www.niagarawellandcanal.com

FEATURE EXHIBITS AT THE MUSEUM

May - DecemberTHE NOBLE EXPERIMENT: TEMPERANCE & PROHIBITION:The demon rum? Or a cup that cheers? Canadians have been arguing about alcohol for at least two hundred years! This exhibit on loan from the Peterborough Museum and Archives explores the debate that aff ected Canadians on every level: from their own homes to the national and international stages. Commemorating 100 years since the start of prohibition in Ontario, this travelling exhibit will be complemented

by artifacts from our own collection.

CALL TO ACTION! PORT COLBORNE UNDER THREAT:In 1866, the sleepy village of Port Colborne became the staging area for defense during the last invasion of Canada. Being situated on the Welland Canal with two railway lines,

Port Colborne was the ideal location to muster regular forces and the militia to counter the Fenian threat. Learn about the Welland Canal Field Battery and the important role played by local residents during the 1866 Fenian Raid, and the Battle of Ridgeway.

July - December PULLING INTO PORT: To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Port Colborne becoming a City, the most recent additions to our model ship collection will be on display in the Marine Exhibit Lighthouse.

November - December CHRISTMAS IN THE MAKING: From the settlers’ time to today, handcrafted gifts are crafted from the heart. This Christmas exhibit explores the spirit of meaningful gift giving.

HISTORICAL & HERITAGE TOURS

CEMETERY TOURS! Once again, the L.R. Wilson Heritage Research Archives at the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum will be off ering our popular Cemetery Tours at Overholt and Oakwood Cemeteries in 2016 in May, September and October. There are three diff erent cemetery tours which feature some of the interesting and eclectic stories of the lives of the people buried in the cemeteries, and highlight the fascinating connections between our local community’s past and national and international history.

URBAN HISTORY WALKING TOURS - WEST STREET AND HUMBERSTONE VILLAGE The L.R. Wilson Heritage Research Archives at the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum will be

off ering two diff erent guided walking tours of West Street and Humberstone Village in the summer of 2016. The tours highlight some of the interesting history in our urban areas, and intrigu-ing stories from our community’s past.

Tours cost $5 per person, and tickets must be purchased in advance by visiting or calling the Museum (905) 834-7604. The number of tickets available for each tour is limited, so don’t delay! Dates and times for the specifi c tours will be available on our Facebook page.

HERITAGE GUIDES The Historic Port Colborne – A Pictorial Guide to Port Colborne’s Heritage Buildings and Sites features 36 properties to guide readers in learning about the people, landscapes, and historic buildings that bring Port Colborne’s neigh-bourhoods to life. Also included in this updated brochure is the Doan Cemetery, which was recently desig-nated a heritage site. >>

The Historic Welland Canal Guide highlights 11 historical locations along the Welland Canal. It features the importance of the canal to our city and showcases the city’s favourite locations to view the ships travelling to or from Lake Erie.

Copies of both guides are available at the Port Colborne Visitor Information Centre at 76 Main Street and at City Hall at 66 Charlotte Street, local attractions, and online at www.portcolborne.ca

TENNESSEE AVENUEOriginally established in 1889 as the Humberstone Club or “Solid Comfort,” the lakefront homes of Tennessee Avenue are reminiscent of the American South. In 1903, Mrs. Varina Davis, wife of Confederate President Jeff erson Davis, wrote “A Legend, The Grasshopper War”

while visiting friends with summer residences on Tennessee Avenue (copies of A Legend, The Grasshopper War are viewable at the Port Colborne Public Library). The gated entrance to Tennessee Ave. is located off Sugarloaf St., slightly west of the inter-section of Sugarloaf St. and Steele St.

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MILLThe “Incredible Shrinking Mill” is a strange phenomenon produced by interplay of light, shoreline, water, and trees. The closer you get the smaller

it appears. Take Cement Rd., located at the western edge of Port Colborne, from Hwy. 3 south to Lakeshore Rd., turn left (east), and look straight ahead towards Gravelly Bay. The mill looks almost close enough to touch, but as you approach the water, the mill appears to shrink.

goneFISHInGFishing in Port Colborne is an amazing experience, offering year-round, world-class sport fishing. With access to Lake Erie and the Upper Niagara River, Port Colborne offers beautiful scenery and excellent fishing. Well known for its trophy fish: trout, walleye and bass, the Upper Niagara River provides some of the best bass fishing from June to November.

Lake Erie, the smallest of the Great Lakes in volume, measures 241 miles across and 57 miles from north to south, with a depth of 62 feet. Because it warms rapidly in the spring and summer

and freezes frequently in the winter, Lake Erie is an ideal location to catch the Spring and Fall Salmon and Trout Run. Lake Erie is recognized as one of the province’s best fishing spots for perch but anglers have a variety of options, as walleye, salmon and trout are also thriving in Lake Erie.

Port Colborne’s waterways are world renowned. Big names like Bob Izumi love to fish these waters, as do tournaments like the 444 International Walleye Tournament, the Can-Am Invitational and the past Pro Am bass tournament to name a few.

ICE FISHINGDespite being so cold outside, some of the greatest fi shing in Port Colborne can be had in the winter. From January 1 to March 15, anglers can venture out on the ice (ice conditions permitting) and drop their lines for yellow perch, Lake trout, tasty whitefi sh and feisty northernpike.

Ice fi shing in Gravelly Bay has long been popular, as well. Gravelly Bay is typically frozen for several months every winter.

Walleye range in size from 16 to 22 inches, with catch rates rivaling any country

Yellow Perch has been voted as the “tastiest table fi sh” and the most fun to catch

Lake Erie’s perch range in size from 7 to 12 inches
