ACTVITY

Reasearch Skills: Students will gather information about the importance of exercise and the different exercises that can be done to keep their body healthy.

Analysis Skills: Students will summarize the information they find about the importance of exercise and those exercises that will help keep their heart healthy.

Communication Skills: Students will create a display showing why exercise is important for all children. The display should also demonstrate various exercises for keeping a healthy heart. Once the display is completed, they will present this information to another class.

Activity Narrative: The teacher should begin by having students access the following websites: http://kidshealth.org/kid/stay_healthy/fit/work_it_out.html and http://kidshealth.org/kid/stay_healthy/fit/work_it_out.html . It is always a good idea to have the sites bookmarked in some way on the computer for easy access. Both sites give students the information they need to research the importance of exercise to their bodies and what kinds of exercises they can do to keep their hearts healthy. Have students use the organizer titled, “Keep a Healthy Heart”, to organize their information. Once they have finished gathering the information they need, they should create a display for sharing the information with another class. The display should show/tell why exercise is important and show exercises that they can do to keep a healthy heart. The “Healthy Heart” Displays should *state why exercise is important to keep a healthy heart, *state other things exercise does for their bodies, and * show exercises that are good for keeping a healthy heart. A rubric has been included for scoring the students’ finished product displays.

Keep a Healthy Heart

Many children in the world do not realize the importance of exercise in their lives. Exercise is important for keeping a healthy heart. We have been asked to create a display showing/telling why exercise is important to our heart and what types of exercises would be good for kids to do. You will use this display to present this information to the first grade classes. Your display should include *why your heart is important, * why exercise is important to keep a healthy heart, *the things exercise does for your body, and *exercises that are good for keeping a healthy heart. Be sure to use the scoring rubric to help guide you with your display.

My Sleep Log

Objectives:Students will:

Create a log to record their nightly sleepAnalyze their sleep patternsCreate a plan to improve sleep patterns if needed

Materials:Sleep Log handout (available at: KidsHealth.org/classroom/3to5/body/functions/sleep_handout1.pdf)Pencil Clock

Class Time:30 minutes

Activity:Most kids need about 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night. Are you getting enough? Do you have healthy sleep habits? Create a sleep log to record information on how you sleep each night. Make sure you record what time you go to sleep, the number of hours you sleep, if you remember any dreams you had, and how you feel when you wake up in the morning. Continue recording for 1 week. Now look at your log and determine if you got enough sleep for the week. If not, what kept you from getting enough sleep? Create a plan to make sure you are getting a good night’s sleep.

Extensions:Describe and illustrate different dreams you’ve had. Add these descriptions and drawings to your sleep log.

Continue recording the amount of sleep you get each night in your log for an entire month. Create a graph to show your data.

Skin: The Great Protector!

Objectives:Students will:

Demonstrate knowledge of germs and how germs can make people sickIllustrate and describe how skin protects the body from germs

Materials:Computer with Internet access2 applesParing knife2 platesApple Observation handout (available at: KidsHealth.org/classroom/prekto2/personal/hygiene/germs_handout1.pdf)Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, crayons)

Class Time:20 minutes

Activity:Germs are everywhere! But your body has something that helps to protect you – skin! Your skin helps keep you safe by blocking out germs. What could happen to us if we didn’t have our wonderful skin? Let’s find out by observing these two apples. The first one has a shiny skin protecting the soft inside part of the apple. But let’s peel the skin off of this other apple and predict what we think might happen to it over the next few days. Using your Apple Observation handout, look at and record what each one looks like over the next 5 days. What do you notice about the two apples each day? How are they alike? How are they different? What do you think might happen to each of these apples over time? Do you think they will stay the same as they are today? Why or why not?

Extension:Watch what happens when we cut into the skin of the first apple. This is what happens to your skin when you get a cut. What do you think will happen in that cut? Notice that the soft inside part of the apple is starting to turn brown. Why is that? Why is it important to wash a cut with soap and water and protect it with a bandage?

Hands-on Dirt!

Class Time:30 minutes

Activity:All day long, your hands touch things that have lots of tiny germs all over them. Today, we’re going to take a close look at our hands after you’ve had some fun playing and we’re going to learn what we can do to keep our hands clean. Let’s go outside and dig in the dirt for a few minutes! Once we’re back inside, we’ll look at our hands with our magnifying glasses. What do you think you’ll see? How do they look? Do you think it would be a good idea to go eat lunch right now? What could happen if you did that? The best way to get all those germs off your hands is to wash them. But does it matter how you wash your hands? Let’s find out. Half the class will wash their hands with just water. The other half will use soap and water. Then we’ll look at our hands under the magnifying glasses again. What do you think you’ll find? Now, color the pictures on your How to Wash My Hands handout and number them to put them in the right order.

Activities for Students

Note: The following activities are written in language appropriate for sharing with your students.

Take Care of YourSELF

Objectives:Students will:• Identify causes of stress• Explore ways to avoid stress

Materials:• KidsHealth article “The Story on Stress”• “Take Care of YourSELF” handout• Markers, crayons, construction paper, photos• Magazines, photos• Poster board, construction paper

Class Time:One hour or two 30-minute sessions

Activity:It’s a lot easier to avoid stress if you take care of yourself. The best way to stay away from stress is to have a balanced life. That means making good decisions about how to spend your time each day. After reading the KidsHealth article “The Story on Stress,” create a poster based on the SELF idea in the article: Sleep, Exercise, Leisure (fun stuff), and Food. The SELF idea is that if you take care of yourself and get enough sleep and eat healthy food, and if you exercise and leave time for fun stuff, you’ll probably feel less stressed out! Use the handout as a guide and add pictures, drawings, or photos of yourself next to the SELF activities you decide to include in your poster. Put this poster on your fridge or in your bedroom to remind you and your family about how to keep a more balanced life. As you get older and get involved in more activities, it will be more important to remember the SELF technique. Maybe your parents can take a lesson from you the next time you see them stressed out!

Extensions:1. Write down a time when you were feeling stressed. Think about what part of the SELF was missing that may have

caused you to feel stressed out.

2. Make a SELF poster for a family member who seems stressed. Use illustrations to share the news about taking care of yourself.

3. Write a cheer based on the SELF technique. Add dance moves to it and share it with your class.

The Importance of Hand Washing Activity

Put a little glitter and Vaseline or flour on some students’ hands. Have those students shake

hands with other students, who should then shake hands with other students, and so on. After

everyone has shaken hands with at least two people, ask your students if they have glitter or flour

on them. Discuss how shaking hands can spread germs and brainstorm ways to avoid germs and

the spread of germs.

Repeat the activity, only this time have the students whose hands have flour or glitter wash their

hands before they shake hands with other students. Does your class notice a difference?
