During Roadside Inspection in the US, the Safety Inspector will ask for the data transfer of the last 7 or 8 days of driver records from an ELD.

The data transfer can be done with different methods:

• For RoadLog Solo users it can be via USB or Bluetooth Transfer

• For RoadLog Advanced and Premium users it can be via Wireless (web services) transfer or USB or Bluetooth Transfer

For USB data transfer the inspector will have to provide an authorized USB device and their Safety Inspector Code.

For Bluetooth data transfer the inspector will have to provide an internet hotspot via Bluetooth and their Safety Inspector Code.

For Wireless (web services) transfer the inspector will provide their Safety Inspector Code.

The driver will enter the Safety Inspector Code in the “comment field” as shown in the instructions below.

Should any of the methods above fail, printing the driver’s logs is a legitimate data transfer method (for more information, see page 6).

Instructions for Roadside Inspection with Roadlog ELD

This Roadside Inspection document includes:

• Step-by-step instructions of how to perform wireless (web services) data transfer to the Inspector (see page 3).

• Step-by-step instructions of how to perform USB data transfer to the Inspector (see page 4).

• Step-by-step instructions of how to perform Bluetooth data transfer to the Inspector (see page 5).

• Step-by-step instructions of how to print your logs in case the above methods fail. (Included is the legal basis explanation for the printout option – see page 6)

• How to dispute an incorrect citation (see page 7).

Steps to complete Wireless Roadside Inspection Note: For RoadLog ELD Plus only. Cellular connection is required.

1. From main menu select ‘Inspection/More’ button

3. Select ‘US HOS Logs’ for US Inspection

2. Select ‘Roadside Inspection’

4. Select ‘Wireless Transfer’ 5. Select ‘Web Services’ 6. Enter comment as provided by the Inspector. Most commonly it will be the Inspector’s badge number. Select ‘Continue’

7. ‘Transfer in progress’ will be shown

8. ‘Transfer Completed’ means that the driver logs were sent to an FMCSA server and the Inspector can see the results in the eRODS software.

Steps to complete USB Roadside Inspection

1. From main menu select Inspection/More button

2. Select ‘Roadside Inspection’ 3. Select ‘US HOS Logs’ for US Inspection

4. Select ‘USB’ Transfer 5. The Inspector is required to provide the USB flash drive for this Inspection. This special USB has to be formatted to FAT32 and it has to contain an authentication file from FMCSA.

6. When the inspector’s USB flash drive is inserted into RoadLog the ELD a prompt for a comment will appear on the screen. The driver should enter the code provided by the inspector (most commonly it will be the inspector’s badge number). Select 'Continue'.

8. Download completed message will be displayed.

Steps to complete Bluetooth Roadside Inspection

5. Wait until Inspector’s Bluetooth device discovers RoadLog

6. Once the RoadLog is discovered, both RoadLog and Inspector’s device should show the same Pairing Code. Once the Inspector confirms the pairing code the data transfer will occur.

4. Select ‘Local Transfer’: and select ‘Bluetooth’

8. Data transfer in progress screen will be displayed

7. Enter the Inspector’s badge# and select ‘Continue’

9. Transfer completed message will be displayed

Steps to complete Print Roadside Inspection

1. From main menu select the ‘Inspection/More’ button

2. Select ‘Roadside Inspection’ 3. Select ‘US HOS Logs’ for US inspection

4. Select ‘Print’ 5. The RoadLog will print out all the required days per your HOS schedule.

Printout is a valid roadside inspection method in case any of the other inspection methods fail.

(c) The ELD must provide an ELD record for the current 24-hour period and the previous 7 consecutive days as described in section 4.8.1.3 either on a display or on a printout.

3. Select ‘US HOS Logs’ for US inspection

The VDO RoadLog electronic logging system has been sufficiently tested, under the conditions in which it will be used, to meet or exceed the requirements of section 49 CFR Parts 385, 386, 390, and 395 Electronic Logging Devices and Hours of Service Supporting Documents; Final Rule of the United States Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations in effect at the time of its manufacture.

4.9.1. Data Transfer During Roadside Safety Inspections

(b) …To meet roadside electronic data transfer requirements, an ELD must do at least one of the following:

(1) Option 1—Telematics transfer methods. Transfer the electronic data using both:

(i) Wireless Web services, and

(ii) Email, or

(2) Option 2—Local transfer methods. Transfer the electronic data using both:

(i) USB2 (incorporated by reference, see § 395.38), and

(ii) Bluetooth (incorporated by reference, see § 395.38).

For roadside inspection purposes RoadLog with software version 11.02.00 or higher can provide the following options for electronic data transfer:

• USB and Bluetooth for model part numbers 3290-10100100 and 3290-10100101, or

• Web Services, USB and Bluetooth for model part numbers 3290-20100100 and 3290-20100101

The ELD rule also requires an ELD to generate a compliant report on a printout or on a display as a backup if the electronic data transfer does not work.

All models of VDO RoadLog ELD provide the means to generate a compliant report on a printout.

Documents required in the vehicle during at a Roadside Inspection:

• VDO RoadLog Quick Start Guide version 3.0 or newer. This document includes the Roadside Inspection Instructions as well as malfunctions and data diagnostic events reporting instructions.

• A supply of blank driver’s records of duty status graph-grids sufficient to record the driver’s duty status and other related information for a minimum of 8 days.

How to dispute an incorrect citation:

In order to dispute an incorrect citation the operator should do so through the DATAQ system at https://dataq.fmcsa.dot.gov
