KATIE ALLENDESIGNERI am a design graduate from The University of West England. I am looking to pursue a career in service design. Many of my successful projects have been user experience related including a first prize design for a national competition and a first class honours for my final project. I love typography and colour and enjoy seeing a final product either in print or digitally. With a good work ethic, the ability to work both independently or as a team and experience that has prepared me for industry, I look forward to my design career with excitement and great enthusiasm.

The Walt Disney Company (June 2013 - June 2014): Working as a Product Development Intern for a year. Developing designs for well known brands like Adidas and Reebok. Responsibilities included; preparing pitches for new licensees. Managing and designing for existing accounts and providing them feedback on submitted designs. Also worked on negotiating contracts and hosted business meetings. Enjoyed working in a fast paced environment and being constantly tested. Regularly prepared and pitched presentations to clients.

Glaxosmithkline (June 2014 - July 2014): Working in all areas of the design team including testing and concepting. I particularly excelled in the human factors and user experience department. Making sure all types of people, whether they are elderly or an infant, can receive there full dosage of medication correctly is extremely important.

EXPERIENCE Student Rep: During my final year at University, I was a student representative for the year. The main role was to communicate problem areas, and successes to the university. In this role it was important to feedback to the student body the actions taken place, and to be passionate, enthusiastic and to find compromise were actions were difficult to take place.

Organising New Designers 2015 stand: I was given the responsibility to design and organise the new designers stand for 15 University of West England design graduates. I was given a brief, deadlines and rough budget which had to be considered. There was also the whole process to consider like transportation, setup, wear and tear of the event and take down. The final outcome was very effective, was aesthetically inviting and very easy to set up and take down. I was also involved with the design and print of the catalogue we handed out at this event.

THE SHARE SOCIETY

THE FINAL DESIGNA peer to peer sharing service that takes the old idea of borrowing, reinvents it and makes it relevant again using new technologies and social networking.

31 million tonnes of waste is throw away in the UK every year. With the constant pressing environmental issues, this is a lifestyle that we cannot sustain. The Share Society provides neighbourhoods with the option to borrow items they need from

each other rather than purchasing the items. It is estimated that converting 1/5th of spending from purchasing to borrowing would save 32 million tonnes of CO2 a

year. In addition it provides a safe and friendly communication to bring neighbours together through the use of meeting points at cafes complete with locker drop off

points for the everyday busy indivdual. Saving time, money and space, because access is better than ownership.

THE PROCESSThe project started with primary and secondary research, moving onto concepting, development and final product. Testing was done throughout.

User interfaces were designed for the app, website and cafe touchpoint. These were then tested by users to understand the usability. The branding was an important part to the service. It needed to be something that was instantly

recognisable on sight. The colours are bright and draw the eye. Other details were considered like a bag for life, to avoid people using plastic bags.

Because of the nature of the service, different methods of testing was done to really gain an understanding of the experience. This included; questionnaires,

interface testing, walkthroughs and testing 1:1 dimensions.

STORYBOARD

“We love Katie’s idea as it brought the Lowdi brand to a totally new market. Crucially it solved an actual problem in a totally viable way. It is a very well

considered idea that has huge market potential and we are sure real students would enjoy using this product. Also she began to prototype her idea!”

Rob Bye - design students UK

“An intriguing, connected concept that works when scaled. We liked it that even our little Lowdi guy – created by the French animators CRCR – found its way into

the product itself.”Harald Dunnink - Founder of Momkai (Lowdi)

Page 17: Katie Allen CV and portfolio

The final design really reflects our consideration for the user. The idea was to create individual environments that catered to different needs. The seat was then

designed to fit all pods to reduce manufacture costs. My main focus in the group was to work on the user experience. It was my role to

not only develop the interfaces and the experience before the passenger gets to their seat, i was also in charge of understanding the form of the final design. We

used a 1:1 cardboard form of the cabin to hack away at the material and really understand the space.

‘‘ My job is to kill office boredom and get you more active. I help your employees get away from their desks by participating in the biggest hide and seek games

around. A classic activity that will get people taking the long way round to meetings to see what the fuss is about. Make me apart of your team.” MORT

The problem: People working at desks for long periods of time are exposing themselves to a higher risk of health problems including increasing the risk of

diabetes, heart disease and death. Primary observation showed that in order to get people away from their desks there needed to be an incentive.

WALT DISNEY EMEA

WORKING FOR DISNEYI spent a year at the Europe, Middle east and Africa branch of The Walt Disney Company. This industry experience was invaluable and I really enjoyed the fast paced environment.

Page 25: Katie Allen CV and portfolio

Throughout my time at Disney I managed my own clients, attended meetings and pitched to clients and created Powerpoints and documents to support these

presentations.Working with companies all over the world, it was interesting to see different

company expectations and developed my knowledge of manufacture and industry. The element I enjoyed most about my experience was the diversity of each day

and the different things i had the privilege of being involved in.
