Hello With term four coming rapidly to an end teachers are busy with final testing and reporting. As you can see from this newsletter it has been very busy with the Athletics Carnival, Health Expo and Year 12 Valediction, just to name a few big school events. We also participated in the Katanning Show with an information stand manned by Board members, staff and students as well as entering various items for judging and subsequently winning awards.

The Student Services team have been busy organising transition and to date the Year 6 students seem to be thoroughly enjoying classes at the High School. Our teachers are delivering a range of lessons for them across all learning areas. In conjunction with this we are also inviting students to test for the ACE classes for 2019. On Wednesday 28 November all of the Year 6 students from feeder Primary Schools will attend a transition day, which should be great fun.

Our new house points system is well underway. Students have been involved in several house point activities and rewards. Over the last few weeks Student Services have run colouring in, connect four, longest kick, Uno and 3 on 3 basketball competitions held during recess and lunch times. Students earn points for participation and these go towards their overall house points. During weeks 4 and 5 a positive behaviour competition was run, the house with the most positive behaviour entries were treated to a sausage sizzle at recess on Friday 16 November. Congratulations Barloo! To make the best use of the teaching and learning time in the last three weeks of school for Year 9 English classes, we will be organising the groupings slightly differently, based on NAPLAN results. The aim is to give the students a head start to gain the required skills to reach band eight next year when they will have to sit OLNA. Those who have already reached band eight in NAPLAN will be given extension work to encourage them to consider ATAR for Senior School. The NAPLAN data below shows how Year 9 students have performed over the past five years. It is important to note these are all different cohorts of students, which will account for some of the difference. Numeracy Year 9 Writing Year 9 Reading Year 9

The NAPLAN results for Year 9 are slightly down on 2017 results. The comparative performance show 2017 to be a year when student performance was higher in numeracy than other years. For reading and writing 2015 and 2017 were years where students performed better than usual. Thank you

Carolyn Cook

On Friday 14 September, Katanning Senior High School held its second annual Health Expo event in the school gym. The aim of the KSHS Health Expo was to create links that promote healthy lifestyles, which in turn will assist in achieving personal and educational goals for the students. It was also an opportunity to introduce students to community agencies that provide health services, information and support. Twelve community organisations attended the expo promoting the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle, and aiming to raise awareness of the key issues that can impact on young people today. KSHS students benefited from meeting agencies available in the community and can extend this information to their families, knowing these services are still available to them when they leave high school. The Health Expo comprised of displays and stalls ranging from sexual health and drug awareness, to healthy eating and road safety. Our year 10 students produced a number of stalls focused on the following Health related topics;

Bullying

Drugs

Alcohol & Accuracy

Safe Sex

Mental Illness

Anxiety/Stress

Healthy multi-cultural Food

Confidence/Self Image

Smoking Staff and students interacted with experts from the health and wellbeing industry and participated in fun activities, including vision goggle mazes, Kahoot quizzes and mindful colouring. The 2018 Katanning Senior High School Athletics Carnival took place during Week 2 of Term 4 at the Katanning Leisure Centre Quatermaine Oval. Holding the event early in Term 4 allowed for the inclusion of Year 12 students, who joined Year 11 students in the ‘Open’ division. While the weather was unkind on the day it was fantastic to see competitor numbers rise to 230 students, this was an increase of 20% over the 2017 event. Students from all year levels battled it out in championship and novelty events with late rain necessitating the completion of final field events during school hours in weeks 3 & 4. Overall the event was a huge success. The Health and Physical Education Department would like to thank all participants for their effort during the event as well as the dedicated teachers and administration staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the day ran smoothly. We look forward to an even bigger event in 2019. Team HPE

CLONTARF FOUNDATION KATANNING ACADEMY

On Saturday 6 October, the Year 12 Katanning Clontarf boys started their Senior Trip to Derby and Broome. The first day was spent in Perth getting ready for our early flight on Sunday morning. It also included some late night sleep talking that was quite amusing. Once we arrived in Broome we borrowed the troopie from the Broome Academy and made our way 2 hours north to Derby. We were greeted by the Derby Director Michael Harris on arrival, we then made our way to the Derby Jetty for tea. After staying the night in the Derby Academy room, we were up early and on our way across the Derby marsh to a couple of secret fishing spots of the locals. Whilst not capturing the elusive Barramundi, we did manage to catch a shark and plenty of crabs. Once it reached lunchtime the temperature soared to 42 degrees and so it was decided that we head back to town to cool off. In the late afternoon we visited Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre and Boab Prison Tree which were both a highlight of the trip.

The next morning we again headed off early, down the famous Gibb River Road. I will never again complain about the state of the roads around here. After a couple of hours of driving we reached Windjana Gorge and explored the area. The little watering hole that was there included fresh water crocodiles - we counted 23 of them. We then continued our journey to Tunnel Creek and walked through the eerie tunnels in knee deep water with bats above. We then packed up at Derby and made our way to Broome for the next few days. Once in Broome we settled into our accommodation at the Pearle of Cable Beach. If you haven’t stayed there we highly recommend it. The boys were very happy to have our own villas with a pool. After a quiet evening in our new accommodation we were up the next morning touring around Broome and sampling the local mangoes. The boys loved Cable Beach and the Broome Port Jetty.

In the afternoon we made our way to the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park which was an amazing experience for all of us. We got to hold a small crocodile and watch the tour guide get up close and personal with salt water and fresh water crocodiles. There was also a rather large Red Kangaroo that made a few boys think about joining a gym. The next morning was a 5am rise to make sure we were up at low tide to go find the dinosaur footprints on the rocks just off shore. We managed to find one and then explore the rock pools to see what else we could find. We then enjoyed an afternoon meeting some of Willie’s family and looking around the Broome area, this also included a visit to the Broome Academy to see how they were going. It was then Friday, which meant it was time to go home. We squeezed in a visit to the office of Senator Patrick Dodson and also the Yawuru Offices. The flight home was relaxing before we hoped off the plane and went looking for warmer clothes. Matthew Rea - Director

Bush Rangers Camp: Wave Rock The Bush Rangers recently enjoyed a camp to Wave Rock, Hyden. On the way we stopped at Buckley’s Breakaway where erosion has exposed kaolinite clay underneath laterite and created cool caves and outcrops. We explored Wave Rock and surrounding sites including Hippo’s Yawn, The Humps, Gnamma Holes and Mulka’s Cave. We rode our bikes out to Lake Magic and swam in a hypersaline pool which was lots of fun as you can float very, very easily. We also swam in the caravan park pool, spotted wildflowers and played spotlight and camp games. On the way back to Katanning on Sunday we stopped at Lake Dumbleyung to go kayaking and bike riding. The strong wind made kayaking tricky but fast when we could travel with the wind. Miss Watson Unit Leader

On Tuesday 23 October, Katanning Senior High School took one boys team and one girls team from Years 8-10 down to Albany to participate in the largest basketball competition outside of the metropolitan area - The Great Southern Basketball Competition. Both teams played with exceptional teamwork and enthusiasm, and supported each other on and off the court. The Boys team won every game in their divi-sion and secured the Grand Final win against North Albany Senior High School. The Girls team also came first in their pool, however fell short in the Grand Final match against North Albany Senior High School and thus came second overall in their division. A big thank you to Kiara Taylor (Year 11) and Hohepa Watene (Year 11) who came down to help coach the teams. Also a huge thank you to our parent helper – Lynley Keley, who generously volunteered her time to come and umpire the games on the day. Without the help of volunteers, events like this would not be possible and thus we are extremely grateful. Well done to all of the students involved in the competition. Team HPE

GREAT SOUTHERN BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Healthy eating for families In our modern society, very few of us use up enough energy to take on the extra calories of ‘treat’ food and drinks. The Australian Dietary Guidelines provide up-to-date advice about the amount and kinds of foods and drinks that we need regularly, for health and well-being.

By providing your family with the recommended amounts from the Five Food Groups and limiting the foods that are high in saturated fat, added sugars and added salt, your family will get enough of the nutrients essential for good health, growth and development. A healthy diet reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and some cancers.

The amount of food your child will need from the Five Food Groups depends on their age, gender, height, weight and physical activity levels.

Shop smart and eat healthy - tips for parents Go shopping with your children and allow them to choose the healthy foods that they enjoy eating. For example, ask children to choose some of the fruit and vegetables.

Shop twice a week - fresher fruits, vegetables, breads and meats are more likely to appeal to the whole family.

Buy in season - seasonal fruits and vegetables taste great, are better quality and are better value for money.

Select small pieces of fruit - younger children prefer smaller pieces of fruit as they are easier to handle.

Choose quality - try to avoid bruised fruit or vegetables.

Encourage variety - so that your child does not get bored with their food.
