Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

I am delighted to have been appointed the substantive Principal of Katanning Senior High School from Term 2 2018. Mr Alby Huts did a very thorough handover of the school to me after he left and I take this opportunity to thank him for his hard work. I know the staff at Katanning SHS have been working very hard for some time to improve the school and I would like to thank them all. We are looking forward to bigger and better things at Katanning Senior High School as we move forward with some new planning and ideas. We are currently doing an audit of staff roles and responsibilities, both teaching and non-teaching, with an aim to make some adjustments to improve our operations and our course offerings and delivery. Face to face ATAR subjects are a priority and we hope to have a larger group/class doing this in 2019. We are also looking at our Certificate II pathways for employment with the view to include Cert II Hospitality. We have been very fortunate to engage the expertise of Mrs Paula Beck from Schools’ Curriculum and Standards Authority to work with our English department. Mrs Beck’s expert input will ensure our curriculum, moderation and assessment in the English learning is second to none. Our staff are very lucky to have the opportunity to work with her, as she does not often deal directly with individual schools in this way. She will be here in week four. In the short time I have been here, I have noticed a marked improvement in behaviour and manners around the school since I was Acting Principal last year, which is very pleasing. Behaviour has been good overall with only a small number of students requiring intervention. Reducing suspensions is an area we will keep working on, but I will not tolerate poor behaviour. Students are expected to be polite, follow instructions, be on time, do their work and wear uniform. They have a Code of Conduct and I expect them to follow it. We established a Positive Behaviour Support team late last year, based on a Department of Education initiative with an aim to develop a more positive school culture. Work is being done on a revamping of the lower school quadrangle near the library and canteen area. The first stage included clearing the quad and replacing the drains. Further works will commence in the near future. There is an article in this newsletter with a photograph of the work to date. To avoid the very long waiting time our 147 bus students had in term one, the buses now are trialling

picking up our students first after school. This resulted in having to make a minor bell change. School now

starts at 8:50am and finishes at 3:10pm. This started in week three and so far has been a very positive

change.

LOWER QUAD REDEVELOPMENT

Lower Quad Redevelopment Stage 1 works of the Lower Quad are almost complete, with the final temporary paving blocks being installed. Activities in Stage 1 saw the removal of the tired and deteriorating garden beds, removal of old open concrete drainage, replacement of unpaved areas with cracker dust (ready for future paving) and installation of new channel grate drains. We gratefully acknowledge the support of Shane and the team at Great Southern Quarries Wagin, for donating the 75 tonne of cracker dust for this project. Community support of Katanning Senior High School is always greatly appreciated. Future stages of works over the next 12-18 months will include:

Installation of raised limestone block garden beds with appropriate plantings;

Installation of new paving throughout quad;

Installation of new shade structure/s (gazebo or shade sail); &

Installation of new seating / picnic tables

Ramping of the three raised sides – from walkways down to channel grates – and installation of new paving.

Once complete, the whole area will provide a fresh clean feel for all to use and enjoy, whilst eliminating drainage issues and trip hazards.

Stay tuned for more updates!

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

To enhance the positivity of our school a team has been formed to implement the Department of Education’s initiative of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). This is a long-term process which involves research and analysis of current practices before implementing change. So far the team has developed our purpose statement which is: Purpose Statement: The purpose of the PBS team is to establish, through a consultative process, a common understanding of behaviours expected in the Katanning Senior High School community. We will guide staff to model and explicitly teach students these behaviour expectations and provide motivation for students to perform them. It is our intention that this will develop a school culture which is positive and consistent, and improve student outcomes school-wide. As the process continues we will keep our school community informed and seek feedback and ideas. PBS Team

Year 9 visit to the National ANZAC Centre Albany

In the last week of Term 1, Ms Hughes and Ms Gray’s year 9 HASS classes studied World War 1 and as an educational activity, both classes were taken to the National ANZAC Centre in Albany for the day. The National ANZAC Centre is an award-winning facility that uses multimedia, interactive technology and historical artefacts to create a deeply personal connection with the past, as well as pay tribute to those who served. It is known for commemorating the war through the stories of the ANZAC’s as opposed to telling its own story via pro-war or anti-war sentiments. The location of the Centre, looks out across King George Sound and overlooks the location from where the World War 1 Warships gathered and left for war. The Year 9 classes were split into two groups and one group went into the ANZAC Centre and the other group walked around the grounds which consisted of other museums and a variety of equipment from WW1 such as old tanks, cannons and other machinery. The group that went in to the ANZAC centre were all given a card about a person involved in the war not just from Australia or New Zealand but Turkish soldiers as well. The students then got to follow the person’s journey throughout the War. After morning tea, the second group attended the ANZAC building and the other group looked at the machinery and museum’s in the grounds. Most of the machinery was interactive and the students were allowed to work them and sit in or on them and get an idea on how the machinery and guns were used. At lunch time both groups joined together for a sausage sizzle cooked by our wonderful AIEO, Boyd Woods and his band of helpers, Josh Wilson, Malcolm Guy and Robert Pepall. After lunch, students went up to the look out and visited one of the old bunkers and the area where there once was a cannon overlooking King George sound. Over all, it was a great day and we could have spent a lot more hours at the centre, the museums and exhibits in the grounds. The students represented our school well by being well behaved and respectful at all times.

The 2018 Katanning Senior High School Netball Squad competed on home ground at the Katanning Leisure Centre during week 2, in the annual Bendigo Bank Netball Tournament. Fourteen schools took part in the event this year, nominating a total of 51 teams from throughout the Great Southern Region. Across the 6 divisions 129 games were played on the day. Katanning Senior High School entered 6 teams, one in each division. This year teams were coached by a combination of staff and parents including Mrs Smithies (Lower School Boys), Miss Cully (Lower School Girls), Mr Gielingh (Middle School Boys), Mrs Butterworth (Middle School Girls), Mr Gardiner (Senior School Boys) and Miss Tegan Collard (Senior School Girls). Throughout the day all teams showed fantastic sportsmanship and team spirit on court, with several teams narrowly missing the finals playoff. Teams were umpired by students from the Certificate I & II in Sport and Recreation as a part of their officiating competencies. These students all demonstrated improvement in their verbal and non-verbal communication skills throughout the day. Thank you to Rhys, Aaliyah, Aniqah, Kaylee, Cyaniqah and Miriam for your efforts on the day. The HPE Department would like to thank all the players, volunteer umpires, coaches and assistants for supporting this event. Team HPE

HOUSE COMPETITIONS

Advocacy has been described as a class where you learn about the things in life that the curriculum doesn’t cover. It’s a session once a week where anything could be discussed or anything could happen. It’s also an avenue for the school to re-vamp the house system and build up the school spirit. For the last week of term one Year 8 Strathglen and Glenroy and Senior School Condeena and Barloo got their chance to do something a little different and earn some points for their houses. The houses divided into teams and competed in two events. The first event a Kahoot jumble about school, houses and teachers and the second, a food relay. Other than house points, what was in it for the students? I can’t be a 100% sure but I’d say they had fun and shared a lot a laughs. Ms Caitlyn Fitzgerald 8.3 and SS.2 Advocacy leader

Term 2 has bought with it new Year 8’s into the Digital Technologies classroom, and with them, new queries as to what it is and why we are learning about it. As a result we spent the first few lessons delving into the ‘WHY…?’ We looked at how rapidly social media is growing and the influences it has on us everyday. We also discussed the idea that a lot of social media accounts have now reduced the age required, meaning many students already have accounts or may get some in the future. With this improved technology and understanding of global concepts comes improvement in our abilities to create entrepreneurial incomes and help others (Alex Knoll at 12 years old founded an app to allow disabled people to easily access services in public places). We have access to the technologies; we use the technologies socially; now we want to gain the skills and knowledge to take technology to the next step. Mrs Rachel Whitehouse Science

Five of our senior school students are participating in the Workplace Learning Program (WPL). This provides students the opportunity to learn, develop and apply hands on skills in their chosen workplace. Students attend WPL at local businesses once a week with the support of an Education Assistant, enabling students to gain on the job experience in a supportive environment. Workplace Learning prepares our students with work skills including customer service in the retail industry, working as part of a team and identifying safe work practices. Students are enjoying their social interactions with their work colleagues and the public, during their work placements. Shanniah has continued on from last year at the Katanning Public Library, she enjoys working and interacting with the patrons. Ali and Lulu are also in their second year of WPL and are back at Woolworths. They have made excellent progress. This year is Chloe and Taleeah’s first year participating in WPL, they are placed at IGA Supermarket at the BKW Co-op and they enjoy the interaction with the public. Hi Everyone,

Wow Term 2 is already flying. I guess you’re wondering what our cadets have been up to.

Week 10 of last term was our first camp. It was an awesome first camp for the year. Cadets and leaders went to Lane Pool Reserve, Dwellingup and spent the whole weekend enjoying the outdoors.

I asked a Year 7 student what he thought of his first ever bushranger camp, he replied. “Camp was awesome”. We went on a the high ropes course in the tree top adventure, we also hiked up a hill (King Jarrah Trail), then we had a camp fire. The weather was cold when we first arrived, thankfully the sun made an appearance and warmed us up. Students also went kayaking. It was a full on weekend, everyone had a great time.

Miss Watson has also secured funding for the Bush Rangers to purchase bikes for the cadets and leaders so in the future we can also plan a hike with the bikes on the Munda Biddi bike trail.

Cadets also had an afternoon with a Landcare officer helping to clean up Police Pools, picking up rubbish at Piesse Dam and we’re also planning for our next camp.

So watch for our next adventure. Mrs Hiddlestone

Follow The Dream (FTD) Visit Albany Only a week after we got back from camp, FTD was off again, this time on a quick day trip to Albany. Up bright and early, we loaded the bus up with 14 of our finest (and Boyd) and headed off down the highway to Menang Country. Our first stop was South Regional TAFE where we took a tour of the campus and staff ran us through the facilities and courses available. This was great for some of our senior students who had been thinking about studying at TAFE, they could get more of an understanding of what is available and get a feel for the campus. Unbelievably and quite possibly for the first time ever on a Follow the Dream excursion we were running ahead of time! So we thought we’d squeeze in a cultural experience and headed for The Gap. Now for those of you who have not been to The Gap before, it’s a beautiful natural wonder and should be experienced. I was expecting to enjoy this… what I was not expecting was for the path to be see through! Much to Patty’s delight- I let out a little yelp when I was happy bounding along the path only to realise I was looking at the wave crashing 20 metres below me! My public embarrassment aside we took in nature and read up about the two warring brothers whose spirits came back as a string ray and shark and helped form The Gap and Natural Bridge. Our next stop was UWA and the students were pleasantly surprised. Not just a tour of the campus and a ‘look’ at the facilities. Students were introduced to the Director, Ms Jenny O’Neil, who gave them a presentation on what life could be like if they choose to engage fully with their schooling. Then the students were immersed in student life! They were not only given a tour of the facilities they were allowed free reign of the student common room where they enjoyed some morning tea and played pool and table tennis. Then they were lead down to the science labs were they got to experience some Biology and Chemistry activities first hand. The students were fascinated with the quality of the microscopes and enjoyed looking at the plant matter and even some ants in very fine detail with Dr. Peter. The Chemistry was made very entertaining with Dr Craig who enthusiastically showed us what happens when we heat some metals. He also sent us home with some ideas for DIY pH testing which we tried out the week after in tutoring. It was a wonderful day that gave students the understanding that further study is possible without having to move to Perth. Depending on what your interest is there are many opportunities here in the Great Southern. Mrs Caitlyn Fitzgerald Program Coordinator Follow the Dream: Partnerships for Success

Colds and Influenza

Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:

Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards. (Sneeze into elbow if unable to wash hands without help).

Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.

Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)

Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.

Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.

Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.

What to do if your child gets a cold No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:

Rest: This need not be in bed. Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of

water, milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children. Germs are spread easily to classroom staff and other students. Keep your child home if your

child cannot; Cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing Wipe his/ her nose independently Wash hands without help

Influenza, or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness and muscle aches.

Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic.

Why should I consider having my child vaccinated against the flu? The National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia's peak body for health advice, recommends annual vaccination for anyone six months of age or older who wants to reduce their chances of becoming ill with the flu.

Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended for anyone six months of age or older with a medical condition that places them at higher risk of severe illness from flu. Children and adults with heart, lung or kidney disease or a weakened immune system, are eligible for free flu vaccine through the National Immunisation Program.

Children without underlying medical conditions who become infected with flu can also develop serious illnesses. Flu can cause high fever and pneumonia, and make existing medical conditions worse. Flu can also cause convulsions and diarrhoea in children.

Influenza viruses are always changing. Each year scientists try to match the strains of influenza viruses in the vaccine to those most likely to cause flu illnesses that year. It takes up to two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination against flu and protection lasts about a year. The seasonal flu vaccine is available on prescription or via GP and immunisation clinics and is provided free for certain groups. Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information visit healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation or contact your GP or Immunisation Clinic.
