I like to play searching games. The caller chooses things to find and calls them out just like this

What other things could you search for?

I often play sorting and memory games with my whānau. We find things like containers and boxes, collect leaves, stones and sticks.

We sort by colour, by size, and find things that are the same or different.

We even play memory games and I guess what is missing from the collection.

What other objects could you sort?

We love making up nature hunt games for our whānau walks. We choose things to look out for in our neighbourhood like: tūī, kauri trees, five purple flowers, a green letterbox, someone wearing something red, the letter ‘K’ for Karu Putē.

It’s so relaxing that I nearly drift off to sleep!

My body grooves and moves when the music plays in my whare! I love to sing and dance with my whānau. Sometimes I dress up in Nan’s shoes and beads as I sing around the house.

Sometimes Ringa Raweke stops the music and we have to freeze like statues!

Did you know…?Did you know that children are naturally curious and need to connect to their environment, place and space to make sense of their world?


As a pēpē, I learned and made sense of my world by exploring a wide range of things by tasting them in my mouth. Mum would make sure the things I’d taste were safe and not too small.

I learned things like cold, warm, soft, hard, rough and smooth.

Can you think of some other things I could use to play and explore?

I always win the taste guessing game. Have you played this game too? Small bowls are filled with different flavours like marmite, sauce, honey, yoghurt, to name a few.

We close our eyes and on our tongue something for us to guess.

Are there other types of food that you could create to make this game at your place?

Some people call it a game, but for me it’s a chance to taste. We get out our trusty cookbook and choose something to make.

Baking is so much fun for me.

I knead, pour, mix and measure. Together we make all sorts of things like bread, pizza, cookies, rēwena, and cakes to taste.

I love to head out to the garden alongside my whānau and spend time with Papatūānuku and Rongomātāne. I love to plant all sorts of seeds and plants and watch them grow.

I have to keep an eye on my teina Miti Te Miti though.

He likes to taste everything! Go away, Miti!

Have you ever had lunchbox days at home? We do them all the time. We plan these special days together and I help make all our lunches.

I make the sandwiches, cut up fruit and pick a special treat.

I even pick some of the kai from our māra kai. Thanks, Rongomātāne!

Ringa Raupī is my nickname because I like to help! I love helping do the dishes, fold the clothes and match socks.

When I hang out the washing, I like to sort the pegs.

My special job is to feed the cat.

However my favourite job is washing the car because I get to squirt Pāpā.

It’s a great skill to draw in a big breath through your nose and down to your puku. When you do this outside, what can you smell? Can you smell Tangaroa’s breath?

What about Tāne Māhuta? Can you smell his leaves?

When Ranginui and Papatūānuku are crying, what can you smell?

Can you remember the smell of Uncle’s hangi pit?

What is your favourite thing to smell?

When I am outside, I make mud pies. You can make them with anything! Leaves, bark, sand and moss are all good - you can also make them smell nice with flower petals or herbs.

Be careful collecting dirt, my friends, in case you accidentally pick up dog poo!

Uuuuuuuu yuk! It STINKS!
