The End Is NearThe End Is NearThe End Is NearThe End Is Near

In late 2012, I was asked to continue as Newsletter Editor. At that time, I said I would continue but it’s time to start looking for someone else to take over. The following year, 2013, I made the same comment, asking to be replaced and letting it be known that I was looking forward to handing over the duties to a fresh mind. Last year when it was brought up again, I was a little more adamant about giving up the position and only hesitantly agreed to continue with the warning that I would not do it for another year and that if someone didn’t step for-ward, I would eventually announce my final edition.

I’m still waiting for someone to step forward and have included a different request in each newsletter since De-cember 2014. It is now time for me to announce that my final Hawk Talks issue will be no later than July 2015. I refuse to allow myself to feel guilty about this as I have forewarned the club well over two years ago. I have dis-cussed the with president Pat Dilling and he said he would help with the recruitment effort and would take over the duties himself if we are unsuccessful in finding a replacement. I hate to see Pat placed in this pre-

dicament as I’m sure most membership will agree that he has enough to do being president. Nevertheless, I stand by my July deadline.

My fear is that all this drama will scare away anyone that may have been considering the assignment. That is why my previous 3 re-

quests to fill the job have highlighted the positive aspects of the du-ties. And it really is a fulfilling task that does not take up that much of

your time. Alas, I am retiring and would like to be free of any obliga-tions and this newsletter needs to be passed to the next person. I hope

y’all understand and I look forward to helping the new editor get familiar.

President’s Message By: Pat Dilling

Spring is upon us this month, though it seems like it has been with us all Win-ter long. I don’t want to jinx any up-coming events but I sure hope we get some rain soon. Thanks again to George Newhouse for organizing our February Meeting at the Hof Brau, we had a great turnout as usual and there were plenty of Studebakers driven.

I have two main messages this month, first and most important; we really really need someone to step up and take over as our News-letter editor. This is truly one of the most important tasks for smooth operation of our Chapter and it is a primary means of communication to members both inside and outside the chapter. Whoever takes on this task will not be left all alone with it, you will have the tools you need and assistance from others including me and the outgoing editor.

Next topic is the balance in our bank accounts. At last report we have a substantial sum in the bank. And since we are a non-profit organization we need to find some uses for the money. In the past we have provided scholarships to sev-eral community colleges, donated to some school automo-tive programs and also to some charities. We will discuss ideas on what to do at our March meeting. If you have a suggestion on worthwhile uses for our funds please be pre-pared to describe it at the meeting, also have your proposal written down so we can include it in a future newsletter. I would like to have this resolved by June.

Reminder our next 3 meetings are on Saturdays! See you at BMR racing on March 14th!

Secretary Report, February Meeting

Had a nice turn-out at the Hof Brau, Thanks George NewHouse! We had 39 members and 9 Studebakers. Doug and Debbie Nielson are our newest members. Welcome! We also had two guests : Bob Chal-lender and Mike Harris. We’re glad you came!

Pat Dilling opened the meeting by leading a chorus of Happy Birthday to Brian Challender There were 13 Studebakers at the Autorama with a good response from the those who came out to see the show.

We have T-shirts from the Zone meet last summer, $10.00 each. Con-tact Pat Dilling. There are still sweatshirts that were ordered and need to be picked up, as well as some extras if you want one. Contact Johna Pierce. Name badges are $8.00 for members who would like one. Contact Linda Barnard.

The Fair Oaks Fiesta Days car show is coming up in May. In the past we have had enough club members showing their Studebakers, that space has been provided to allow us to all park together. For details contact Perry Knopf.

Art Smith displayed the effect of ethanol gas on original rubber fuel lines, and how it eats the interior of the hose. He recommended that the fuel hose be replaced with an ethanol rated hose for safety. One of our members, Bob Peterson is trying to reduce his inventory of Studebaker parts. Contact him for your parts needs.

REMEMBER! MARCH, APRIL, & MAY CLUB MEETINGS ARE ON SATURDAY !!!

Club dues for 2015 are due by the end of March. You can pay by mail with the form at the back of Hawk Talks, or pay in person to Linda Barnard at the next meeting. We still need someone to take over as editor of Hawk Talks, the club newsletter. Jon Stalnaker has done a great job for many years. However, Jon is willing to step aside and give another member a chance for glory!

Cool Idea for

Studebaker Event Next Year By: Lou Van Anne

The Bob Hope Fox Theatre in

downtown Stockton, built in

1930 is an art-deco style thea-

tre that has been beautifully

restored. The Friends of the

Fox group sponsor a classic

movie showing once a month

on Sunday afternoons.

I have contacted them about

showing the

movie “Quicksand”, a 1950

Mickey Rooney movie shot

largely in a late forties Stude-

baker dealership, sometime

in 2016. The theatre group has

agreed to work with us on this but I must guarantee them

ticket sales of 100 at $6.00 apiece. As I want to avoid a con-

flict with the SW Zone meet in Northern Nevada I’m await-

ing a date before attempting to schedule this event. I in-

tend the make this a four club event as I do with the picnic

so I think we should be able to meet the minimum.

Anyhow, I am interested in knowing if this is of interest to

the club and how many would commit to buying a ticket?

Please contact me directly. My contact information can be

found on the back of the newsletter.

Remember the Kids By : Betty Knopf

Did you get a Christmas gift of clothing that does not fit or one that you think is to-tally ugly? When is the last time you deep cleaned your clothes closet and your dresser drawers?

Now is a time to be motivated to consider all of the above questions. Please consider do-nating clean and gently used, or even new clothing that does not fit or is ugly, to students of all ages and sizes in the Center Unified School District. Clean and appropriate clothes really do help kids get to school and to succeed.

Please bring your donation items to our next club meeting. Super thanks. Betty Knopf 916-944-3553 [email protected]

Karel Staple Represents Studebakers to the Autorama By: Pat Dilling

The Autorama was a great success for Karel Staple Stude-bakers. We had 12 cars on display in Building 7 in the Expo Center at Cal Expo. This is a change from previous years when we have been in the large Butch Gardner Clubhouse. Because the Expo Center is closer to the main gate, I believe more people saw our cars this year. Our display spanned 44 years of Studebaker Produc-tion starting with Ethan Phil-lips' 1920 Special Six, which we believe was the oldest car in the show. Rick and Johna Pierce's 1964 Gran Turismo Hawk represented the 1964 model year. In be-

tween we had John and Betty Martins ’50 Champion Starlight,

Kelly Wilke’s and Pat Dilling’s ’53 Starlights, Leonard Brewer’s ’55 Speedster, Mel France’s 57

Packard Clipper, Doug VanPool’s ’57 Golden Hawk, Darrell and La Ree

Brunelli’s 59 pickup, George Newhouse’s ‘62 Lark, Steve

Rainville’s ’62 Champ pick up,

and Art Smith’s ’63 R2 Avanti. Many members hung around at our chapter in-formation table passing out copies of Turning Wheels and Chapter information while chatting up visitors about Studebakers. Hopefully we will gain some new members. Once again we heard folks say they had no idea there was a local Studebaker club. Just shows the impact we can have by getting our cars out to local shows. I want to thank every-one who came out and represented Karel Sta-ple including those who did not have their cars on display. It seemed like everyone was having a great time and enjoyed the whole show. I hope this encourages even more folks to do it next year. Special mention goes out to Doug VanPool and his wife who joined us from the Sagebrush chapter. The show theme was the Great Gatsby and they were decked out in period garb every day. I have included a picture of Doug hanging out with folks at the Townsmen display, he’s the one in the pin-

striped Zoot suit.

If Studebaker INVENTED Cool….

And I own a Studebaker….

And Zoot Suits are cool….

And I OWN a Zoot Suit…

Then I MUST be cool!!!

Now, THIS is how you

represent!

Yes, Doug, You

are cool.

Thanks for

joining us at

Cal Expo

And thanks

for showing us

how to

represent!
