The students are very excited to be dressing up and there are many great books in the book fair for purchasing. I wonder what book characters the staff will come as this year? All welcome. Project Based Learning and Curious Learners and Inquisitive Learners at KVPS KVPS teaching staff (and about 600 other educators) spent all of last Saturday at Lindfield Learning Village, Sydney, for a professional development event called iOntheFuture6. We were introduced to Project Based Learning models from American and Australian educators, and the specific student-centred curriculums and teaching and learning structures that support authentic, engaging, collaborative and challenging student centred projects. We also took part in literacy and formative assessment workshops, again with a strong student-centred focus that allows all learners to be able to talk about what they are learning, connect to the purpose of that learning and know their ‘where to next’. Last Thursday and Friday I attended a conference on educational inquiry and innovation which outlined the types of activities that place learners in control of their own learning through curiosity, a connection to nature and the power of storytelling. We are committed to improving our own understanding of what can work best for our students and we are excited to begin looking within our small school village context and make meaningful connections with our community, learning alongside each other, where students can teach students. Thank you to Mrs Sutton, Miss Jarvis, Mrs Gripper and Mrs Robinson for giving up their Saturday and seeking to continue their own learning journey as educators. We are all lifelong learners if we choose to be. Andrew Smee - Principal Students at the General Store purchasing items to use in the Kitchen Garden cooking class.

The 2019 Trek for Timor through Morton National Park, Kangaroo Valley, will be held on Saturday 14th September. Registrations are now open and we

enthusiastically encourage young people to take part. Participants walk – or run! - in teams of between 2 and 6, and previous events have proven to be a

fantastic event for the whole family.

Participants have a choice of how far they’d like to walk - either 14kms or 36kms or 50kms. As well as completing the physical challenge, many young people benefit by learning about the disadvantage experienced by people of

similar ages in Timor Leste.

What are we raising money for?

The Kangaroo Valley Remexio Partnership (KVRP) has been working in Timor Leste for nearly 20 years. We have completed many projects over

the years, including the construction of our first ‘student house’ in Dili. Our current focus continues to be on creating educational opportunities for young

people. Without external funding from groups like ours, many Timorese young people, especially in rural communities, would be unable to continue their education. Our previous Trek in May 2018 raised enough funds to buy a second student house in Dili. This year we hope to raise enough money to renovate the house to a standard where it is suitable for between eight to 10

students. We also assist students with fees and living expenses.

If students and their families are interested in learning more about the work we are doing in Timor Leste, we recommend they visit our website: http://

www.kvrp.net.au/

The Trek for Timor is a unique experience in our beautiful region; it’s an opportunity to explore some of the most glorious bushland on Earth while helping disadvantaged communities in Timor Leste. We’ll have local food provided by volunteers and some fun and encouragement along the way.

Registration Information:Early bird registration (before July 31st) - $50

Registration from 1 August - $65Children under 12 years – free
