The South Asia Conference on Literacy was organised by Rotary International in Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav inaugurated the three-day conference on 1st March 2012 Addressing the conference, RI President Banerjee said, illiteracy is one of the major South Asian problems that not only increases unemployment, but also hampers social and economic progress. He stressed on the need for a long term strategy to eradicate illiteracy from this region. “We are here to discuss and come up with a programme to achieve our goal—100
percent literacy most probably by 2017,” Banejee said. “Through the conference, we will identify the role that RI can play together with the governments.” Similarly, RI Director Shekhar Mehta said ,illiteracy has slowed South Asia’s progress and asked all to work shoulder to shoulder in order to root out the darkness of illiteracy. He added “This conference will focus on various issues to promote literacy and education in a holistic manner.” Nepal’s Minister for Education Dinanath Sharma and former RI President Rajendra K Saboo also shed lights on the importance of literacy. Dear Interactor Roman, Greetings from Rotary International. The results are in for the 2011 Interact video contest, and while the video by the Interact Club of Kathmandu Mid Town was not selected as a winner, we commend you for the effort you put into your entry. We had a competitive field of entries and the judges faced a difficult decision in choosing the best of many excellent options. You can learn more about the videos that were selected as winners at http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/120127_news_videocontest.aspx. You are also invited to participate in a Facebook chat on 7 February from 12:30 to 13:00 Chicago time to discuss the contest. We hope you will participate in the next Interact video contest, which will mark an exciting milestone as we celebrate Interact’s 50th birthday. Thank you for all the time and enthusiasm you put into your video this year. Your passion for service is what makes Interact such a dynamic movement in your community and around the world. Best wishes, Adam
