Kent District Library is partnering with Kelloggsville Public Schools to transform a state-of-the-art media center at Kelloggsville High School into a

community library.

The Wyoming-based public high school recently opened a two-story media center at 4787 Division Ave. SW that would traditionally be open only to its 694 students.

The vision to make this a true community library began prior to groundbreaking through a collaborative process with KDL and Kelloggsville. The vision became a reality with the assistance of a Steelcase Foundation grant awarded to the district in the amount of $250,000 over the next three years.

Kelloggsville asked KDL to manage the facility, which will also be open to community members after hours, on Saturdays and during the summer starting in January 2018.

KDL will also supply the Kelloggsville library collection, with a focus on popular materials and the school’s curriculum. Students will also have access to all KDL materials available system-wide, including books, eBooks, music, movies, databases and more via their KDL library card.

“We are very pleased to announce this unique collaboration with KDL, which is the first of its kind in the county,” said Kevin Simmons, Kelloggsville High School principal. “Our new state-of-the-art space, in combination with the first-rate resources that KDL is making available, will be a tremendous asset to our students and to the community.”

The community will be welcome to use the 6,000 square-foot facility at specified times, including:• Three evenings a week between 3 PM to 8 PM during the

school year.• Every other Saturday from 9 AM to 1:30 PM during the

school year.• Additional hours during summer months when school is

not in session, including evening and weekend hours.

Lori Holland, manager of the KDL Wyoming Branch, will oversee all KDL services and staff at the Kelloggsville Branch.

The partnership between the public library and school system highlights Kent District Library’s goal to challenge the traditional concept of what a library is and to ensure its many programs are available to everyone in the county.

“We’re excited to further extend our services and programming to Kelloggsville High School through this unique partnership,” said Lindsey Dorfman, Kent District Library director of branch services and operations. “It’s wonderful that KHS is opening its doors to allow the community to access its new state-of-the-art media center.

“We are delighted to offer expanded opportunities for students and the community to experience all that KDL has to offer.”

The facility will open to the public in January 2018. As details such as hours of operation are finalized, they will be published at KDL.org.

We’ve adopted the Port Arthur Public Library in Texas because their collection was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. While their building can be restored, their collection must be replaced.

KDL has pledged to partner with other Michigan libraries to donate 50,000 items, including books, CDs and DVDs.

KDL will donate materials that have been retired from the library collection.

Patrons will also be able to get involved by donating new or like-new books in collection boxes at all 18 KDL branches through Dec. 30. The greatest need is for children’s materials, DVDs and bestsellers. In January, all collected items will be shipped to Port Arthur.

“What seems like a monumental task is truly an effort that highlights just how much libraries care for the communities they serve and their library colleagues throughout the state and nation,” said Brian Mortimore, director of human resources for Kent District Library. “A natural disaster leaves destruction in its wake, but also presents people with an opportunity to demonstrate the very best that humanity has to offer. We have the opportunity to mobilize our respective talents to help one another, and that’s what Michigan libraries are doing.”

When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, the Port Arthur Public Library sustained substantial flood destruction and loss of property, including books, computer equipment, archives and more. The library is hoping to reopen in March, 2018.

Tanis Trucking in Jenison is generously donating to store and transport all the items to Texas.

Port Arthur is a community of about 50,000 people, located 100 miles east of Houston. It is primarily a working-class, oil-refinery town that relies heavily on the library for services to the community.

She worked on the farm, where the family tended to potatoes and beans and making hay. Jeannette mostly helped inside the kitchen and has special memories of her mother doctoring her and her siblings with home remedies such as a bread-and-milk poultice to remove slivers. For bronchitis, her mother would fry up a mess of onions and use the grease in a poultice on the chest, “and that drew out the infection,” Jeannette remembers.

The family utilized onions in other ways, too, serving them up at most dinners. She can’t help but credit her good health to eating onions on a regular basis, which she still does today. “We’d pull ‘em out of the garden and eat ‘em right where we stood.”

Jeannette graduated in 1935 from Sand Lake High School along with 23 other classmates. She then went to beauty school and eventually opened up her own shop – dubbed Cut ‘N Curl – in the home she shared with husband Dick Hoskins in Belding. They enjoyed 56 years together and raised three children.

After Dick died, Jeannette eventually married Albert Heimbecker, and they were together for 17 years, making a home in Greenville. When he died, Jeannette’s daughter came to live with her until Jeannette’s move into a facility in Greenville.

In the early fall of 2017, she transferred to her present home in Caledonia. She cooks most of her own meals – “now today, I made cornbread and scalloped potatoes,” she says – and gets by just fine with the aid of a walker.

She owns a handful of books: her treasured Bible along with works by Dorothea Jorgenson Ellsworth and Beth Wiseman. “I’ve always loved the girl stories,” she says, nodding to favorites like Anne of Green Gables.

Along with reading, one of Jeannette’s passions is painting. She took it up at a young age, eventually signing up for lessons. She copies others’ works, but even so, her talent with a brush and oils is stunning. Several of her paintings hang framed in her modest living room. Others adorn a nearby bedroom.

Jeannette isn’t one to brood over losses, even though they include all her siblings, two husbands and two sons, and most recently, her daughter. She’s grateful for the friends she’s making at Station Creek. And for onions. And for her KDL card.

And a certain disposition. She smiles sweetly. “You might say I’m a tough old biddy.”

It's NeverToo Late

100-year-old patron gets her first library card

Let’s see, the things you do when you turn 100…

Blow out a mess of candles.

Humbly accept congratulations.

Share how eating a whole lot of onions may have helped with your longevity.

And oh, yes, make a point of signing up for your very first KDL library card!

Meet Jeannette Heimbecker. When she moved from Greenville into an area served by KDL, she made sure to sign up for a KDL library card to assuage her transition.

Jeannette lived virtually her entire life in Montcalm County. So when she moved this past summer into Station Creek Retirement Community of Porter Hills near Caledonia, signing up for a KDL card was on her must-do list.

KDL’s Caledonia Branch supplies goods and services to Station Creek, which means that with a valid card,

Jeannette is now able to check out and put on hold anything that anyone else might discover in making a trip to a KDL branch – from books to videos and more. And because a KDL representative visits Station Creek twice monthly, Jeannette can establish a personal connection with KDL without traveling to the branch.

Born Jeannette Pierce, she grew up in Montcalm County with a father who farmed but also trained horses, “because back then, that’s pretty much the only way people got around,” says Jeannette, who was born just as World War I – that’s I, not II – was ending.

Her mother served as a schoolteacher until the kids started coming – six in all – now all deceased, except for Jeannette.

“I’ve always read, and I’ve always encouraged my children and my grandchildren and now even my great-grandchildren to read,” she says.

M teacher at Wyoming High School, proudly shows copies of student-published books while explaining how the Community Reads program is achieving success on “so many levels.”

The Community Reads program started more than five years ago when Lori Holland, branch manager of Kent District Library’s Wyoming Branch, became determined to find a way to bring authors into classrooms to help inspire students. (She worked with Melissa Schneider, media specialist at Wyoming High School (with about 1,500 students) and others at Kent District Library to bring best-selling authors

of young adult books to the schools to speak with students and to provide more than 400 copies of the authors book so each student has one.) The program includes the students authoring and publishing a book of their collected writing.

The primary goal of the program is to instill good

reading and writing skills. The benefits of the program go beyond simply helping with literacy. Often it becomes a transformative experience for the students, authors, parents and guests who are involved.

Melanie’s class is one of several at Wyoming and Godwin Heights schools that starts each year by giving each student their own personal copy of a book, which serves as the cornerstone of the year's study. “A lot of our kids have

never had a book they can call their own,” Melanie explains. “They’re free to write in the pages as they read, but what’s really exciting is that as the books are handed out, I tell them that the author will be here at the end of the school year. They usually expect a quick result from whatever they’re asked to do, so this is a wonderful way to foster long-range goals.”

“KDL does an excellent job of selecting books that are relevant and pertinent to students’ lives,” Melanie explains. “Last year, our book was All American Boys, which is co-authored by Jason Reynolds, who is black, and Brendan Kiely, who is white. In the book, they tell stories from alternating perspectives, which helps students to see themselves and the perspectives of others.”

The book also touches on issues of police and racial profiling. During the school year, Melanie invited police officers to join the classes. The students and police had constructive conversations about hard topics, and were able to do so without getting defensive or angry. The next summer, some of the students chose to attend the Grand Rapids Police Academy. Melanie describes how two of the students are now interested in a career in law enforcement. “They came away from the experience saying ‘I think I can help fix a problem in society by representing my race on the police force.’ It’s a transformative experience!”

In closing, Melanie sums it all up. “Our goal in high school is to help make things applicable to the real world. A lot of the students here are not going on to college, but go on to vocational schools. How can we foster a love and curiosity toward reading? A desire to continue to read? This program goes beyond that, helping young people to appreciate that they are represented in literature, that their voice is heard.”

“Our students are authors. They’re published!”

True Detective Season One

"I’m not one to reread books or watch a television series more than once, but I’ve blown through the dark, gritty eight-hour tale that is "True Detective" Season 1 so many times I could write a book on it (admittedly, probably not a very good book). The characters portrayed by Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey have a great dynamic, and McConaughey’s character, Rust Cohle, is easily my favorite role that he’s ever played." -David, Service Center

There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins

"Stephanie Perkins is my favorite teen author of quirky romances, but she threw me for a loop with this suspenseful slasher novel. Makani, a Hawaiian teen forced to move to Nebraska to run away from her past, encounters a serial killer that begins to pick off her high school peers one by one. Makani and her group of friends are desperate to find a motive to figure out the killer’s next move – Makani’s afraid her secret will make her the next victim. Hold on to your cornstalks and get ready for a wild and scary ride." -Abby, Wyoming

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindnessby Michelle Alexander

"Michelle Alexander, who is a legal scholar and a professor, documents racial disparities in rates of arrests and incarcerations and explains the depth and breadth of the ways in which the legal system creates these disparities." - Mark, Krause Memorial (Rockford)

My Holiday in North Korea: The Funniest/Worst Place on Earth by Wendy E. Simmons

"I discovered this book when it was returned and it was a pretty quick read but very interesting. It follows the trip of a middle-aged woman who visited North Korea on her own for 10 days. She is escorted everywhere by two guides who spend most of the time trying to convince her how great North Korea is. The book has a lot of pictures in it that the author was able to take to document her strange visit. At the end of the 10 days she was ready to leave and starting to get pretty paranoid." -Craig, Walker

Turtles All the Way Downby John Green

"This should not be a surprise choice from me! Ava is a high school student and struggles with a form of OCD. It really gives the reader a peek into the thought process of this mental health issue." -Beth, Gaines Township
