JULY CLUB EVENT

Jeff and Jim Nothing Planned - Covid 19

Prez Says, Finally, another Nebraskaland touring event! Thanks to Gaylan and Joyce Abood for arranging the Ft. Atkinson tour from Elkhorn. It really turned out to be a beautiful day. We had a short meeting and good conversation at a very peaceful picnic area. The odometer contest was won by Bob and Cathy McGowan. Bob also was grill king and Joyce’s brownies again won the day! July and August events as of this writing have not been finalized. Stay tuned for specifics. Here’s wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable 4th. Vicki and I are still very proud to call the USA our home. Thanks again to Jack Sanford for his outstanding job as editor! Rob Kinsey, President

Tech Talk

T-Bird Tech Talk

By Martin Bierman

“My back-up lights

don’t work”

Question- a Classic T-Bird owner finds his back-up lights do not work and wants to understand why. Answer- The easiest answer is that they only work when the tail lights are on since they are wired into the wire that feeds the tail lights. So, one needs to turn the headlights on to have back-up lights work. In cars that have the Fordomatic automatic transmission the neutral safety switch is also the switch for the back-up lights. The switch is located below the shifter and four wires with connectors exit the shifter- two red/blue stripe wires for the neutral safety switch and two black/red stripe wires for the back-up

switch (see

photo). They can be easily found by lifting up the carpet around the

shifter base. The red/blue wires run to under the dash where they are plugged into the wire loom that connects to the ignition switch and starter solenoid. One black/red wire runs under the dash to dash loom and connects to a double connector on the black wire

which originates at the headlight switch and runs to the rear of the car to power the tail lights when the headlights/park lights are on. The other black/red wire runs to the rear of the car to the back-up lights in the tail light housings. This is a single add on wire to the rear loom in the ’55 but in the ‘56/’57 T-Bird is part of the rear loom. When the shifter is moved to reverse the switch is closed and power flows through the black/red stripe wires to the back-up lights. In cars with a manual transmission a neutral safety switch is not present and a separate back-up switch on a bracket is activated when the shifter is in reverse. The wiring is similar to the Fordomatic scheme. Having the back-up lights come on only when the tail lights are used was useful for rear visibility for the driver in the dark and also a warning to rear vehicles that the driver was backing up. However, the presence of back-up lights in daytime is a safety factor and all cars have had this feature for decades. If one wants to convert to daytime as well as night time back-up lights one only needs to remove the black/red stripe wire connecting the neutral safety switch to the black tail light wire under the dash and re-attach it to the accessory pole on the ignition switch. Then drivers will be warned that you are backing up no matter what time of day it is.

soft top, mine has only 3,700 miles...like

new....my best price is $ 28,000....I think

that is fair if you look on the web for low

mileage ones. They made 700 cars (the

reverse of "007").

If anyone has an interest, I am at 515-229-

Thanks,

Bob

Editor’s note: I researched this thunderbird,

and this is what I found. (The photos are not

from Bob’s car. They are stock

pictures). This 2003 Ford Thunderbird, is a "007 Edition," commemorating the James Bond movie franchise. I had no idea such a vehicle existed, but in fact it does exist, and this one in a limited run of 700 examples.

• You’re probably wondering, of course, why a 2003 Ford Thunderbird was commemorating the James Bond movies in the first place. Actually, there’s a good reason: Back in the early 2000s, Ford owned Aston Martin, so Ford supplied Aston Martin vehicles for a few James Bond movies. Ever eager to increase their product awareness, Ford also supplied Jaguar vehicles, as Ford owned Jaguar at the time, too. And, obviously, it went a bit further: Ford supplied some Thunderbird models for the movie "Die Another Day," which was really just a large-scale advertisement for a wide variety of Ford products. • Yes, indeed, there was a 2000s-era Ford Thunderbird in

a James Bond movie. This seems a bit hard to imagine now, given that this car is

hardly considered the sort of thing you’d expect in an action

thriller — but back then, it was a cool, new model, and Ford wanted to promote it. Halle

Berry drove a Thunderbird in the movie, and then after it came out, Ford apparently

made 700 units of the Thunderbird you see for sale

here. • So, what’s James-Bond-y about

it? It has a little plaque indicating its significance (and serial number) as a 007 Edition, along with some special aluminum-like trim on the interior and a "007" logo on the dashboard. More importantly, it’s painted in an unusual reddish color called "Sunset Coral," designed to match the color of Halle Berry’s bikini in the movie.

Among the many features are a 305 Chevy V-8 (it may have a mild cam) and an automatic transmission. Dave thinks it only has around 500 miles, because after

he got sick, Dwaine only drove it on short trips just to keep it in shape.

The car is located in Liberty, MO a Suburb just Northeast of Kansas City) just off I-35. See photos of the T-Bucket below:

Pictures from June 28th tour and picnic.

The plaque behind the T-Bird, as shown to the right, says in part: On this field in 1910

Charles Baysdofer flew his areoplane 800 feet. The first air flight in Nebraska.

Our next point of interest was the Nelson Produce Farm.

remember it.”

#6 - “On time” is when you get there.

#7 - Even duct tape can't fix stupid -- but it sure does muffle the sound.
