Editorial material submitted by The 2018 Curwood Festival Committee.

Welcome to Owosso and the 2018 Curwood Festival. I would like to personally invite you to spend some time taking in the sights of the city and partaking in all the city and the festival has to offer. This year’s fes-tival is once again a culmination of hundreds of hours of planning and preparation for the many volunteers that make up the multitude of events and activities that we have available to our residents and guests. This year we’ll have a Lego exhibit, a craft show along with our traditional carnival, parades, river race and enter-tainment tent. We have something for all interests and all ages. I would like to thank the City of Owosso, our Board of Directors and our volunteers for putting together our 41st festival in what has become a proud tradition that has stood the test of time and evolved to become one of the premier events in our community.

Dave Minarik, President

Join us! We’re open for BusinEss!

The Armory in downtown Owosso will be opening its doors for business during the 41st Annual Curwood Festival. This 103-year-old iconic building in Owosso has been given new life with a $5 million renovation. Originally built in 1915 and listed on the coveted National Register of Historic Places, the outside of the building has been totally preserved while its spacious 36,000-square-foot interior has been transformed into a state-of-the-art class-A office space and collaborative incubator. Current tenants, the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Com-merce, Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership, Shia-wassee Convention & Visitors’ Bureau and Michigan Small Business Development Center (satellite office) invites you to the Community Open House & Tours on Saturday, June 9 from 9 am to 1 pm.

Originally created in 1991 by Jackie Leone, the Curwood Festival was proud to announce the winners of the 2018 Cur-wood SAGA writing contest at their April Board meeting. The winners in the Elementary Division were first prize win-ner Aspen Mills, the daughter of Kyle and Tammie Mills, sec-ond prize winner Brynn Pangborn the daughter of Jeff and Bobbi Pangborn and third prize winner Brenna Kiesling the daughter of Brian and Kim Kiesling. The winners in the Middle School Division were Jordyn Pangborn the daughter of Jeff and Bobbi Pangborn, Penelo-pe Macklin the daughter of Christopher and Janice Macklin, and Aliyah Bentley the daughter of Steve and Sarah Bentley.

The Curwood SAGA writing contest is open to all public, parochial, and home school students in Shiawassee County in grades 4 through 12. The writing contest is used to promote an interest in school age students in writing and to keep the memory of James Oliver Curwood alive.

SAGA Chairman Denice Grace would like to thank the following sponsors: Sena-tor Rick Jones, Schluckebier/Hood Wealth Management Group – Chris Mueller, Cordi-er Excavating, Tender Care Home Health and the Shiawassee District Library.

2018 Curwood Postcard & Button Design Winners The 2018 Curwood Festival Button and Postcards Contest Chairman Brandy Kenny announced at the May Board Meeting that Mackenzie Albritton, a 5th-grade student at Chesaning Middle School, is the 2018 Cur-

wood Button Contest winner. Mack-enzie is the daughter of Jamie & Jef-fery Albritton. A 2016 Curwood Princess, Addison Collard, a 5th-grade student at Central Elementary School has been selected as this year’s Curwood Postcard winner. Addison is the daughter of Robert & Carolynn Collard.

The original button was designed by Larry Fronratn and was used from 1975-1984 as a giveaway for participants in the children events. It wasn’t until 1985 that an official sou-venir button contest was created. The contest winner that year was Mike Crawford. In 1987 the Print Design was added to the contest to be used as a souvenir postcard and the honors that year went to Tim Arvoy. The Curwood Button & Postcard Committee would like to thank Advanced Drainage Sys-tems for sponsoring this wonderful opportunity for our local students. Both Mackenzie & Ad-dison will have an opportunity to ride in the Heritage Parade on Saturday, June 9, beginning at 2 pm. The souvenir button and postcard will be available for sale Curwood weekend at the Curwood office.

Curwood Cat Contest

It’s Sunday, June 10, and my cat, Muey Tai was strutting around in front of the mirror in the bathroom. When I asked what he was doing, he meowed that he was going to the Curwood Cat Contest

where he was sure to take First Place! He continued to fuss, meowing that he had to be at the Woodard Paymaster Building at 10:30 am to register. And, to top it off, Muey Tai is challenging all of his feline friends to do the same! So, cats, tell your owners, if you’re unique, healthy, and have a great personality, get

them to bring you down to compete with your other feline friends and have a fan-tastic feline day in Owosso! This event is sponsored in part by Pet Supplies Plus and Curwood Festival. On-site registra-tion begins at 10:30 am with judging at 11:30 am. Registration fee is $8. Muey Tai hopes to see you all there!

Grand Marshal Friends, family and Curwood officials joined at the Knights of Columbus Lounge on a Friday eve-ning last month to make the surprise announcement to Bob Minarik that he had been chosen as this year’s Grand Marshal. In attendance was George Watts who nominated Minarik. George stated in his letter to the committee that he thought it was “high time the festival recognize all that Mr. Minarik has done for the community.”

Bob is a founding member of the festival and is still involved today with the Friday night’s kids parade. Bob has served many roles with the festival and is a past President. Bob is also active in the Knights of Columbus and United Way. Brian Reed, Festival Vice President and Grand Marshal committee chairman, said “it’s always special to be able to honor a founding member of the festival.” As an addition-al surprise Reed called on current festival President, Dave Minarik, to make the announcement and plaque presentation to Bob. Reed says “it’s extra special in that we have our current President Dave presenting the honor to a former President, but even more special from son to father.” We thank everyone who submitted nominations and please un-derstand that there can only be one Grand Marshal chosen each year. Please continue to nominate those deserving people. Also, special thanks to our secret panel of judges for their time and tough job of choosing a Grand Marshal.

Mr. Owosso Coronation In 1980, the Mr. Owosso Contest was created as a way for area non-profits to raise awareness of their causes and funding in an entertaining and enjoyable fashion. Bob Stone earned the honors in 1980 and over the years 38-fun-loving, dedicated men have given their time and talent. Joining the ranks this year, two area men and their committees have been working non-stop for the last four weeks to raise monies for their favorite organization and to win the coveted title of “Mr. Owosso.” This year’s candidates are Patrick Began for The ARC Shiawassee and Gary Duehring for the Child Advocacy Center. They invite you to attend the “Run for the Money” and the crowning of Mr. Owosso 2018 on Friday, June 8, beginning at 8:30 pm. in the Outpost Entertainment Tent. Mr. Owosso Chairman John H. Smith, Mr. Owosso 2000 and Co-Chairmen Joe Holden, Mr. Owosso 2010 and Jeff Watling, Mr. Owosso 2014 along with their committee members would like to give a big “THANK YOU” to this year’s sponsors of the event: Lynn Bowne, Attorney at Law, Jana Kurrle Attorney at Law, Owosso Hitch and Plow, J’s Tux and Bridal, Capitol Bowl Grill/Venue@219, Mid-Michigan Den-tal, Hass Vision Center, Owosso Owl’s Nest Assisted Living and We Care Management.

The Kids in Curwood Country parade has been a favorite Curwood event for many years. The parade was originally devel-oped to give our elementary school age children a chance to march but not miss the parade on Saturday. Currently the parade generally consists of approximately 2,500 children each year. The parade is a great opportunity for our kids to strut their stuff in a parade that is all their own. The theme of the 2018 parade is “Lights, Camera, Action.” The parade starts promptly at 7 pm. The parade line up begins at 6 pm at the corner of Dewey and Oliver Streets. Due to the recent road construction project this year the route has changed. The parade route begins on Dewey and King and travels west to Washington Street. South on Washington Street to Exchange, west on Exchange to Ball Street. The parade will turn north on Ball Street and conclude at the corner of Ball and Williams Streets. The parade will dis-perse in the parking lot of the First Congregational Church.

The Kids parade is judged each year and cash prizes are awarded. This year prizes will now be given for most creative, first-place walking and first-place float and second-place for each as well. Special plaques are also given to those groups who have shown dedi-cation to the parade by their continued participation. The parade is made possible through the support of VG’s Food Center,

proud sponsor of the Kids Parade for the last 29 years, and The Edward Jones Investment office of Dave Minarik. The Kids parade is a genuine joy to assemble and work with the enthusiastic children and their dedicated parents. It is appar-ent by the growing number of spectators that the Kids Parade is a crowd pleasing event that continues to thrill the kid in all of us. Please join us this year along Owosso’s historic tree lined streets for some fun, smiles and family entertainment.

8th Annual Youth Fishing Derby Back by popular demand... the Curwood Festival is excited to announce the 8TH ANNUAL YOUTH FISHING DERBY! We are inviting all kids between the ages of 5 to 15 to “Grab Your Pole... Bait Your Hook... and Cast a Line into the Shiawassee River.” This FREE fishing event will take place on Sunday, June 10 from 9 am to 11:30 am. Onsite registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 9 a.m. (Registration is located near the school bus facility on Jerome Street across from baseball fields). Children will receive free live bait, hooks, weights and bobbers at the registration table. Official fish weigh-in promptly ends at 11:30 am. Directly proceeding the fishing derby, lunch will be provided for everyone in attendance thanks to our sponsors. Trophies and prizes will also be awarded following lunch to the top place anglers in each category. The catch and release fishing derby is designed to give boys and girls who live in urban areas an opportunity to enjoy a fishing experience in their own neighborhood. Volunteers will be on hand to assist kids as needed, provide proper fishing techniques and etiquette while promoting and educating them on how to be environmental friendly. Most importantly, showing them how to have a good time while enjoying the great sport of fishing. For safety and liability reasons, it is important that each youth angler is accompanied by an adult. You won’t want to miss this fun event. The opportunity to introduce kids to the world of fishing and sharing these memories is one of the greatest gifts... please consider joining us for this special event! Thank you to our sponsors: BJ’s Fine Foods, Corunna Mills, Gurwood LLC/DBA, Jets Pizza, Michigan Milk Producers Association and Sheridan Auction.

River Daze Hoping to bring back the fun and excitement of Curwood Festival’s oldest event, the Curwood River Race committee is excited to get this tradition floating again! There is $1,000 in prize money to split between the fastest kayak, fastest canoe, fastest raft and to the “neatest decorated” water craft. The committee also has some neat door prizes that each registered racer can have a chance to win! Come line the banks of the Shiawassee River or jump in a boat on Saturday, June 9, at 5:30 p.m. Race will start at McCurdy Park in Corunna and racers will paddle their way to the walk bridge near the Curwood Castle. If you haven’t signed up yet, open registration will be at the start line from 4 to 5 pm on race day. If floating is not your thing, I’m sure you can find a few laughs watching the racers take the plunge over the dam near the finish line! Thank you to all of our great sponsors and supporters for making this happen including: Not “the paperstreet soap company”, Slingerlandcars.com, Auto Crafters, Graff Chevrolet Durand, O-Town Cafe, Val’s Pizza, Rowell Plumbing, Theodore’s Coffee Roasters, Murtle’s Handmade Chocolates, Brooks Innovative Graphics, Shiawassee Lawn & Snow, Angela Poag at the Nail Boutique, Korner Pub, Retriever Solutions, King’s Concrete and King’s Corner Market.

Bloody Mary Bar

You might say this cocktail looks like a salad in a glass. We definitely wouldn’t disagree. A loaded Bloody Mary is a dream. Snacking on all of the extra trimmings is almost lunch. If you didn’t have an opportunity to eat breakfast and you’re hungry then stop into the festival’s Bloody Mary Bar located in the Outpost Entertainment Tent on Saturday, June 9 from 10 am to 2 pm. The great thing about a Bloody Mary is that it’s totally acceptable to sip one or two before noon and just think of the powerhouse of vitamins you’re getting in each fortified sip. Featuring Dr. Strangelove Original and Hot Bloody Mary mixes made with Owosso’s own Mandingo Pickles brine. There is no admission fee to enter the tent. $5 drink includes a shot of vodka, Dr. Strangelove Bloody Mary mix and a wide variety of garnishes from which to choose. Come in and enjoy a drink or two while listening to music provided by Ben Nolan. Sponsored by Jumbo’s Burger Bar, LaBella Salon & Spa, and Cody Chapman-Coldwell Banker Professionals.

THE B-SIDES The B-Sides fell together in the fall of 2013 to play a cancer benefit and went on to play other benefit shows in partnership with the Korner Pub, Jumbo’s and Roma’s for the last few years. The B-Sides also headlined for 4 years for the Shiawassee Humane Society “Woofstock” benefit, and had the opportunity to play inside the Curwood Castle for an unplugged benefit, which was a unique and memorable gig. Local businessman Tim Alderman has been a top notch percussionist since high school. He is a member of the United Methodist Praise Band and was even a marching Chippewa! Bringing the “cool” to the band is Jeff Deason. The talented singer and bass player can be seen around town jammin’

THE 2018 CURWOOD BEAUTIFUL BABY CON-TEST was held Saturday, May 12. A record number of 60 children participated in the annual contest culminating in the grand-prize winners riding in the Curwood Heritage Parade on Saturday, June 9. The grand-prize winners of the 2018 Curwood Beautiful Baby Contest were Kenzie Braid, daughter of Danielle and Tom Braid, and Hudson Fowler, son of Rashell VanLuven and Tiras Fowler. The winners were joined by Curwood Princess Nevaeh LeConte and court member, Summer Walker.

with other musicians as well as with the B-Sides. Jeff came to the group from the Dirt Surfers, but has been in many bands over the years. Bringing energy to the B-Side with his tenacious rock and roll style is Mike Walz. Mike has been a lead singer in rock bands for over 20 years. Playing in Wisconsin and Chicago for many years, he has settled here in Owosso where he likes to rock and roll. Lastly, the remaining two B-Sides band members are a husband and wife duo, who have been making music together for more than 25 years. Jim Wiseman (Guitar Slim) plays one mean harmonica and takes the lead with his guitar. Terry Bush adds a smooth style with vocals and percussion. The B-sides are an eclectic high energy group playing a great mix of tunes of rock and roll with an upbeat party attitude! They all trade-off singing lead vocals and join in with backing vocals, giving them a very diverse sound, and allowing them to play a wide variety of genres. They play rock, blues, funk, reggae, and alternative music from many popular artists from classic to modern, but they try to mix in some of their “b sides” to keep it interesting. The set list features a huge variety to accommodate any crowd. From AC/DC to Tom Petty, the Doors to Stone Temple Pilots, the Beatles to Judas Priest, Johnny Cash to the Clash. They Rock n’ Roll!

On Saturday and Sunday, Noon to 4 pm, the 1989 movie, “The Bear,” which was based on Curwood’s 1916 book “The

Grizzly King,” will be showing all day inside the Arts Center’s River Gallery. Set in late 19th-century British Columbia, Canada, the film tells the story of an orphaned bear cub who befriends an adult male grizzly as hunters pursue them through the wild. The movie was filmed almost entirely in the Italian and Austrian areas of the Dolomites with live animals, including Bart the Bear, a trained 9-foot Kodiak, present on location. Notable for its

almost complete lack of dialogue and its minimal score, the film was nominated for and won numerous international film awards. There is no charge to view the movie. Popcorn will be offered for a small donation. The Shiawassee Arts Center, which is located near Curwood Castle, is open year-round Monday through Friday, Noon to 5 pm and weekends Noon to 4 pm. The Arts Center features the artwork of local and statewide artists in nine galleries including the Frieseke Gallery and a specialty Gift Shop. The public is welcome and there is no admission charge. SAC, which is celebrating its 46th anniversary in 2018, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage participation and appreciation of the arts. For more information call the Arts Center at 989-723-8354 or visit shiawasseearts.org.

One of the 2018 Rotary International initiatives is to plant a tree for every Rotarian, in helping the environment.

Take a trip back in time with re-enactors from the French Fur Traders through the Civil War. They are excited to demonstrate the way of living in the 1700s to the 1800s and answer your questions about the times. The encampment will be located along the river, near Curwood Castle. Get ready to smell cooking over the open fires, watch the blacksmith’s hammer pounding out hot metal, surveyors laying out the land marks, a Colonial Doctor, the many tent lodges and tee pee setups, with participants living under the stars, also guns and much more. The re-enactors are looking for-ward to seeing the many visitors at the Curwood Festival. Camps are open Saturday, June 9, from 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday, June 10, from 9 am to 4 pm. The Curwood Collection: Paintings at the Castle Two years ago, the Owosso Historical Commission, in part-nership with the city of Owosso, began the restoration of 14 oil paintings owned by James Oliver Curwood depicting scenes from his novels and short stories. As this restoration process nears completion, nine of the restored 14 paintings are currently on exhibition at the Castle, along with new light-ing to showcase the paintings. The lighting, generously do-nated by Marti and Rick Lameti and Diane Cutler and Dan Williams, was installed by Ludington Electric.

During the Curwood Festival, Curwood Castle will be open to the public on Thursday, June 7 from 1 to 7 pm, Friday, June 8 from 1 to 6 pm, Saturday, June 9 from 11 am to 7 pm (closed from 2 to 4 pm for the parade) and Sunday, June 10 from Noon to 5 pm. The Comstock Pioneer Cabin will also be open to the public during these hours. For more information about Curwood Castle, The Owosso Historical Commission, or the Curwood Collection please call at 989-723-2155, or look us up at www.owossohistory.org. Curwood Castle is open to the public, February through December, Tuesday through Sunday, 1 to 5 pm.

Elephant Ears Also known as doughboys, fried doughs, palmiers, and frying saucers, elephant ears are easy to make and custom-ize. They also are remarkably different across the globe, from the fried, flat versions of American fairgrounds to the delicate pastry cookies, known as palmiers, found in French bakeries. Here in Owosso during Curwood Festival, church members of the 76-year-old Redeemer Lutheran Church will again be rolling the dough as they create their version of the ever-popular ELEPHANT EAR. If you’ve got a hankering for some deep-fried dough sprinkled with your favorite topping, then look for them in Carpetbaggers Row located in the Exchange Street parking lot beginning on Friday, June 8 from Noon to 10 pm; Saturday, June 9, from 9 am to 10 pm and Sunday, June 10, from 10 am to 6 pm.
