PUBLISHING INFORMATION

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed sin ce being installed as President (now referred to as Chairman of the Board) of the Crestview Area of Commerce. We began the year with the theme Lights, Camera, Action. Our “Cast” of Chamber offi-cers, board members and com-

mittee chairs set about the business of promot-ing economic and cultural development for our community and promoting and protecting the interest of members.

We spent the year focusing on membership and ensuring that members have an understand-ing of the benefits their chamber membership offers. We also focused on leadership develop-ment and mentoring so that we have another generation of community minded individuals prepared to implement innovative ideas that will take our Chamber and this community to an even higher level of excellence. We had our greatest year of attendance at the Annual Triple B Barbeque Festival, promoted health Education with the Chamber’s community Health Fair and swung our way through The Annual Hacker’s Holiday Golf Tournament. The Chamber’s scholarship committee instituted a first this year with its Inaugural Duck Race to raise funds for the Foy Shaw Memorial Scholarship.

To the officers, board members, committee chairs and chamber staff, I thank you for your hard work, dedication and support. It has been my honor to serve as Chairman of the Board for the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce.

The end of June marks the end of the fiscal year for our Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce. It has been a wonderful year serving the Chamber as the Incoming Chair. I’ve met so many fabulous people in our community and have had the opportunity of building new friendships. I want to thank everyone on the Board and our community for your support.

But, right now, I want to focus the spotlight on our Current Chairwoman Ms Alicia Booker. Being elected to our Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce is really an honor; but, it also comes with a lot of responsibility, commitment to serve and “away time” from home and work. So, please take a moment when you see Alicia to thank her for her service to our Chamber and to her employer, North Okaloosa Medical Center, for sharing Alicia with us during this past year. And, I want to publicly say right here and now... THANK YOU, Alicia for your guidance throughout the year; your friendship and for just being a sweet and thoughtful woman.

Well, now that I have put the tissues away, I want to raise up Flags, Fathers and Fruits and Vegetables! Really?

Yes, Really. Flag Day is Sunday, June 14, 2015. Here’s another

great opportunity for us to stand up and wave “Old Glory.” Flag Day is celebrated each June 14 and commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

June is also National Fruits & Vegetable Month. We all remember our Mammas saying….”You’re not eating enough Fruits & Vegetables!” Well, here is our chance to pack them on. What better place than right here in the Crestview area to get scrumptious Fruits & Vegetables with our rich soil and fabulous weather. PS I am hoping that Watermelon counts for either a Fruit or Vegetable because that is what I’ll be eating anytime or anywhere.

I saved the best for last... FATHER’S DAY is June 21, 2015. I was blessed with having two Fathers. The very first known as “Daddy” is the man who helped raise me from birth, who I adored, looked up to and owe so much to for the person I am today. THANK YOU, DADDY! Eight years after Daddy passed away, my sweet Mother remarried a marvelous man that all five of us Kornegay Kids considered as a Dad. Tony took all of us under his wing and treated us as if one of his own, making a blended family a

reality. We affectionately called him “The Tonester” What a blessing he was to our Mother.

God Bless all Fathers – whether you have children of your own or there are children who consider you as their Father or as a Father figure. You are such a vitally important part of their lives. You teach us, you lead us, you protect us, sometimes spank us but you always love us. Wishing each and every Father a wonderful day of honor on Father’s day.

See you in July!

It has been a Wonderful Year!

We (Bob and Joanne Fiddler) moved to the area in 2002 from Jacksonville in order to be closer to family in Okaloosa County. Former district managers with Jackson Hewitt, we decided to “go it alone” and opened Freedom Tax Service Plus, LLC in Crestview in the fall of 2002. After getting established, we recruited Joanne’s sister, Marcia Saranpa, away from her long career in the legal field to join in ownership.

People can have tax issues come up year-round, so being open year-round is a real plus for our clients. In addition to federal and state tax preparation services for individuals and small businesses, we provide small business bookkeeping and payroll services.

Okaloosa county is brimming with small businesses. At some point, a small business owner’s time is better spent doing the work of their business than fighting with bank statements and receipts—that’s when it makes sense for them to consider paying for bookkeeping services. Once a month they bundle up their business transactions and drop them on our desks. We enter all their business activity, reconcile all their accounts and produce reports for their review. When tax time rolls around, their tax return preparation is no longer a nightmare because the data has been captured throughout the year.

For small businesses with employees, our payroll services make payday hassles disappear. We produce payroll checks or sub-contractor checks in either hard copy or direct deposit. We make all required payroll tax deposits and file all state and federal payroll tax returns. At the end of the year we handle production of W2’s and 1099’s.

Our staff, our Freedom “family”, is the key to the success we’ve enjoyed all these years. Our ability to retain our staff means that clients are able to see the same preparer year after year. Each year, every employee completes many, many hours of continuing education, so you can have confidence that you are dealing with competent folks. Each of our preparers is listed in the IRS’s nationwide listing of tax professionals (http://irs.treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf ) which was published for the first time in 2015. Inclusion in the listing requires preparers to register with the IRS, complete many continuing education hours, and pass a competency exam. Should we encounter a situation that requires additional research, our membership in the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) gives us a “lifeline” to highly trained CPAs and Tax Attorneys.

For more information, please visit our website at www.freedomtaxplus.com, stop by to see us at 417 Stillwell Blvd. in Crestview, or give us a call at 683-1040!

Your Okaloosa County Sheriff ’s Office is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with pride in its outstanding history of serving and protecting residents and visitors alike. As a full service, accredited law enforcement agency, the OCSO continues to see record-breaking numbers in calls for service each year with a current population of nearly 200,000 residents as well as an influx of hundreds of thousands of tourists. The agency currently has approximately 260 sworn officers and 90 civilian support employees and operates at one of the lowest “per capita costs” and “officer per thousand ratios” in the country.

Recent highlights demonstrating the agency’s excellence include earning re-accreditation, having a School Resource Officer program recognized as the Best in Florida and an outstanding success rate in solving cold case murders – five in the last three years dating back to 1975. We are also especially proud of our employee’s commitment to charitable efforts in our community. During 2014, the men and women of the OCSO donated more than $60,000 and many hours of their personal time and resources.

We take pride in our professional and personal commitment to the betterment of the community we serve.

The OCSO offers district offices designed to provide easy public access.

These offices the Livingston Office located next to the Okaloosa County Courthouse in Crestview, the Laurel Hill and Baker substations, the Headquarters Building at 50 2nd Street in Shalimar, and the Destin Substation on Stahlman Avenue.

Led by Sheriff Larry Ashley, the OCSO’s mission statement reflects its priorities: “Ensuring fair and equal administration of the law, safeguarding civil liberties and preserving public safety and doing so with professionalism and unity of purpose, while being good stewards of the public’s trust.”

June: Men’s Health Month – Prostate Cancer AwarenessMEMBER ARTICLE Crestview Health Center

I was recently asked what I thought would be a good discussion topic regarding men’s health. There are a lot of men who have high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes but these diseases do not bias themselves only to men. The medical issue “we” men are most reluctant discuss is one that the National Cancer Institute credits as the second most prolific cancer killer among men. My immediate thought was we need to share more information about the risks and treatment of prostate cancer.

If you are a man over the age of 40 please read the quiz and check your answers below. I think a couple of the answers will surprise you.

True or False quiz:1. Men of any age can get prostate cancer. True | False2. Prostate problems often cause men to have trouble passing urine. True |

False3. Prostate cancer is very common in the US. True | False4. Men with prostate cancer need to get treatment right away. True | False5. All men should be tested for prostate cancer. True | False6. There’s nothing that can be done to lower the chances of getting prostate

cancer.True | False(Courtesy of the American Cancer Society)

Men of any age can get prostate cancer. (True)It is true that prostate cancer can be found in men younger than 40, but it’s very

rare in this age group. The risk of prostate cancer rises rapidly after age 50 – about 6 in 10 cases of prostate cancer are found in men over the age of 65.

Prostate problems often cause men to havetrouble passing urine. (False)

Many people consider the tell-tale sign of prostate symptoms to be difficulty urinating but early prostate cancer usually doesn’t cause symptoms. As the tumor grows, the cancer can cause things like:

• Problems passing urine (peeing) like a weak or slow stream, or having to go a lot, especially at night.

• Blood in the urine• Erection problems• Weakness and bone pain

Other diseases cause these symptoms, too. For example, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a much more common cause of urine problems than prostate cancer. Still, it’s important to see a doctor if you have any of these problems so that the cause can be found and treated, if needed.

Prostate cancer is very common in the US. (True)Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in US men.

Each year more than 230,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the US. And, it’s the second leading cause of cancer death in US men, behind only lung cancer.

Men with prostate cancer need to get treatmentright away. (False)Most men are diagnosed with prostate cancer when it’s still at an early stage – it’s small and has not spread. There are many important factors to take into account before deciding on a treatment, such as your age, your general health, and the likelihood that the cancer will cause problems for you. You should also think about possible side effects of treatment. Some men, for example, want to avoid possible surgery and radiation side effects, like incontinence or impotence, for as long as possible.

All men should be tested for prostate cancer. (False)If you’re older or have other serious health problems and your cancer is slow

growing, you might be more inclined to consider active surveillance, instead of treatments that are likely to cause major side effects.

Active surveillance means monitoring the cancer closely with regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests, digital rectal exams (DREs), and ultrasounds to see if the cancer is growing. Prostate biopsies may be done, too. If there’s a change in your test results, your doctor would then talk to you about treatment options.

There’s nothing that can be done to lower the chances of getting prostate cancer. (False)

We don’t know the cause of most cases of prostate cancer, so we don’t know how to prevent it. But there are things you can do to help decrease your chances of getting prostate cancer and many other types of cancer:

• Get to and stay at a healthy weight.• Get regular physical activity.• Limit your intake of high-calorie foods and

drinks.• Eat at least 2½ cups of vegetables and fruits each

day.• Choose whole grains instead of refined grain

products.• Limit how much processed meat and red meat

you eat.• Drink no more than 2 drinks per day.

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORCOMMUNITY BANK

Community Bank entered Crestview in 2007, providing residential and commercial loans. In November 2013 we opened a banking office on U.S. 90 near the intersection of Highway 85. This provided the opportunity to operate

a full service banking facility. We truly appreciate the support of the Chamber membership over the years to enable us to be an important part of the community.

The Bank is operated as a community bank with local decision making and products designed for the market. Some of the services we offer are commercial, agricultural, consumer and residential lending, deposit and cash management services, wealth management, to name a few. Our commitment to the community is demonstrated by our staff of experienced professionals available to meet the needs of our clients. Please give us the opportunity to live our motto, “Like no other bank you know”.

Happy summer... almost! I really like summer other than spring it’s the best time of year. I am more active in my walking, riding, fishing, working on my yard, you name it. Did I mention I like summer? Welcome June.

June also brings an end to our Chairman of the Board, Alicia Booker’s term of office. What a great year she had and what great leadership

she provided our Chamber. Under her leadership our Chamber has moved significantly forward and she will leave an unbelievable legacy for our future.

As Alicia’s year comes to an end and we need to honor the many great volunteers that have done so much for our Chamber and for our wonderful community. We celebrate our volunteer’s exhaustive contributions on June 27th, 2015 at our Annual Installation of Officers and Awards Banquet, from 5:30 social and program start at 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Food will be great, steaks by Boudreaux and refreshments sponsored by CCB- Crestview. Dress is casual so you really have no excuse to join the fun and help celebrate another Chamber year.

It’s also a time to thank the Officers and Directors that have served their terms with distinction and great leadership. I know we will still see them throughout the next year. The following community leaders have

WAYNE'S WORLD By Wayne HarrisCrestview Area Chamber of Commerce President & CEO

Wayne Harris

As we are set to wrap up the Chamber’s fiscal year with a GREAT Installation and Awards Dinner on June 27th. (Don’t forget to get your tickets!)

I just wanted to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to ALL of you for continuing to amaze me with the time you donate to the Chamber. I am truly grateful to each of you for the continued support of the Chamber Ambassadors. This is a WONDERFUL committee to be on! Not only is it a great way to network and learn about someone else’s business but I have watched friendships develop and business transactions take place. I LOVE IT!

As Anne Shaffield prepares to officially take over as Chair of the Ambassador committee in July, we are going to have one last BLAST for this year’s Ambassador’s points. EVERYONE will start with “0” points being in July. The following “Active” Ambassadors will be named in the June Focus (no business card ads) in appreciation

for all that you have done this year. If I have missed anyone, please email me.

The points will begin again on July 1st! Please make sure that you submit your monthly Ambassador events to Anne by the 1st of the month so they are counted for the Focus. Ex: July’s events will need to be in by August 1st for them to count.

Again, THANK YOU for all you do! Your dedication DOES NOT go unnoticed!
