Event History

• The International Maroon Convention was birthed from the Charles Town Maroon Council’s (CTMC) desire to:

• Gather Maroon communities worldwide;

• Showcase and preserve the cultural heritage;

• Increase awareness of Maroon contribution to contemporary societies;

• Identify and pursue economic opportunities for Maroon communities

The CTMC therefore evolved an existing event, named the Annual Quao’s Day Victory Celebration, to suit the new wishes of the council. The “Annual Quao’s Day Victory Celebration” which has been well received from its inception in 2004, has received a patronage of international visitors eager to relate their connection with local Maroons.

This event was expanded in 2009 when the need to connect the ancestral linkages in the Diaspora in the US, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and West Africa was first identified. Thus, the International Maroon Convention was born.

The first International Maroon Convention (2009) was a two day event of conferences and a festival. Presentations were made by invited guest speakers on the History of the Maroons and cultural practices, a tour showcasing a day in the life of a Maroon, and several musical and dramatic presentations.

The festival received a reasonable patronage of 200 persons with very little promotion, and received the support of some popular local figures.

2010 Event Concept

The theme of the International Maroon Convention last year was The Abeng (The Calling). This year’s theme will embody that of the convention’s logo and will be entitled “Meet me in the circle”. The purpose is to unite the members of the Maroon community in the Diaspora in the US, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and West Africa via the convention’s cultural activities.

The 2nd Annual International Maroon Convention (2010) is scheduled to be a three day event from June 21st to 23rd.

It will involve showcasing the Maroon cultural heritage through guest speaker presentations, musical and dramatic pieces, and tours of the ancestral grounds.
