June 21, 2020—Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Parishioners and Friends,
First and foremost I would like to apologize for a lack of a bulletin over the last few weeks. As you know,
our parish staff has been working from home until recently and I focused all of my energy on our parish re-
opening efforts and also our continued work in our Pop-Up Pantry. I am most grateful to all the volunteers who
are generously giving of their time so that we can re-open Phase 2 of the Archdiocesan plan at Saint Mary’s.
This week we will re-start our Daily Mass at 9am from Monday through Saturday. We will continue to
offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession on Tuesdays from 7pm to 9pm and starting next week we will
also offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession on Saturday mornings from 9:30am to 11am. Further-
more, we have secured enough volunteers to re-open our 10:30am Mass and Noon Mass in Spanish for a maxi-
mum capacity of 100 people. In addition, we will offer Eucharistic Adoration on Monday Mornings from 9:30am-
10:30am and Thursday evenings from 7pm to 8pm. If you are not experiencing any symptoms of COVID19 I in-
vite you to come and spend some time in prayer in our church. Please remember that at this phase of the re-
opening pre-registration is required. You can do so directly via our parish website or by calling our parish office
between 9am and 2pm Monday through Friday.
The reason for pre-registration is to ensure that we do not go above our maximum capacity of 100 people
in any given service and also for contact tracing purposes. If you have difficulty signing up please call us, we are
ready to help. I am most grateful for your patience with these new procedures that have your health and that of
our community in mind. When you come to the church please follow the directions of our volunteers and re-
member that they are parishioners just like you who are enabling the possibility for us to re-open our church. I
am very grateful for the gift of their presence in our community.
Finally, I would like to welcome back to Saint Mary’s Fr. Jim Baraniak, O. Praem. who will preside in to-
morrow’s 10:30am Mass. If you are not yet able to participate in-person, please know that we will continue to
Livestream that Mass along with as many Daily Masses as possible. In addition, please welcome Hunter D’Ar-
mond, Danilo Rugama and Justin Kelley. They are Jesuit Scholastics (seminarians) who will live at Saint Mary’ s
during the summer and will assist me and our parish staff in our Ministry. May the Lord continue to bless each of
you and I look forward to welcoming you back.

MISSIONARY DISCIPLESHIP – FOR ALL

In his wonderfully pastoral and encouraging The Joy of the Gospel of 2013 (and every home should have a
copy!), Pope Francis says that we are all “missionary disciples” (para. 119-120). More specifically, though, we are
all called to be missionary disciples by virtue of our baptism. But of course, we must first activate our baptism;
that’s what Confirmation is intended to signify. Sadly, many nominal, baptized Christians, never reach that point.
For believers, that means they never reach their potential. Consequently, many nominal Christians are not in fact
missionary disciples. And this means that a very significant component of Jesus’ mission is – and may always re-
main – unfinished.
But the ‘problem’ is also, and significantly, in the word itself: “missionary.” That word is enough to posi-
tively affront and deter many people, evoking, as it does, images of wild and fanatical men (typically), trying, to
‘convert the natives’, with scant regard for their own religion, language or culture: in other words, for the integri-
ty of ‘the other.’ One historian, Ramsey MacMullan using a catchy rhyme, characterized this particular missionary
approach as operating by “flattery and battery.” This is decidedly not what Pope Francis, and certainly not what
Jesus, had in mind. So let’s revisit ‘mission’ and ‘missionary.’
A contemporary reading of theology (missiology) emphasizes that the subject of mission is not primarily
the Church, nor is it individuals, however well-intentioned they may be. The primary subject of mission is God
the Trinity: Creator, Redeemer and Spirit. ‘Mission’ is like a one-word job-description (and as such quite inade-
quate) for God. But then, absolutely nothing we can say of God is ever adequate: God is beyond all words. Mis-
sion is what God ‘does’ and has been ‘doing’, from before the beginning of time. God has been active long before
and independently of the Church or any of us. But that does not mean we have nothing to contribute. By God’s
grace we are called by baptism, precisely to be involved in God’s mission as instruments: God’s hands and feet on
earth at the present time, so to speak. God is the author, the writer; we are the pen and paper on which God
writes. God has chosen us as today’s disciples to be instrumental in God’s own work of reaching out and gathering
in, loving and forgiving, feeding and clothing all of humanity, and sharing a vision, something that shapes and
gives meaning to people’s lives, including our own: something to live – and maybe even to die, for.
Authentic missionary disciples are never wild or fanatical, and they do not need to cross oceans or conti-
nents. Missionary disciples operate wherever their circumstances place them, domestically, close to home, as
strangers in a strange land, or as itinerants committed to moving from place to place, as Jesus and his first disci-
ples did. And we can do so in sickness and in health, and no matter our time of life. It is God, not the missionary
disciple, who converts by softening hearts and inviting people to rethink and turn their lives inside out to build a
better and more just and equitable world, one day, one act, one person at a time.
There is a dimension of the Christian life that is untapped in too many people. That is, the missionary
dimension: outreach, encounter, example, assistance, encouragement and the rest. The word “missionary” in its
narrow (and pejorative sense) is no longer needed. What the world needs is more missionary disciples who take
their baptism seriously, and live as Jesus called them – us – to live.
