The President Writes ...
Kendall Glover, CFSP
AFDA President / 2019—2020
Due to these circumstances your AFDA Board faced decisions regarding our annual
convention of either postponement or cancellation. With so many unknowns even today, the
Board felt we had limited options and made the decision to postpone the convention until
Labor Day weekend, September 4-7, 2020. I pray that as we move toward that date each of
you will make plans to attend.
As we continue moving forward with our lives and service to our communities I pray for you
and your family for Blessings and Safety in the coming days. Thank you for allowing me to
serve you!
Kendall Glover
President.
As I sit here writing to you, I am thinking about
what has taken place since our AFDA Mid-
Winter meetings in January. The COVID-19
pandemic was not something we thought about
at that time. These past three months we have
seen our lives change as never before with
shelter in place, no church, no sports, etc.

directors deal with death on a daily basis that they are immune to the emotions and pain brought about by the loss of a loved one or close friend. It’s just a ordinary part of an ordinary day. My recent observation showed me that’s not the case.
I was visiting a close friend who is a funeral home owner and director. She stays busy, very busy. Many times while at her home I’ve seen her leave a family gathering, dress professionally, grab her keys and head out to meet a family or conduct a service, appearing to be just like an 8 to 5 job.
This particular day she was enjoying the Spring weather, grandchildren, friends and family. Coffee was abundant - it was a pajama type day. Her
Funeral professionals are surrounded by death, they’re taught about death in mortuary school, they dress the bodies of deceased, reconstruct and make presentable decedents for family viewing. Meeting with grieving families, consoling, advising and guiding them as loved ones travel through the “valley of the shadow of death.” Death, the cessation of life, is a part of the lives of the funeral profession.
One would think that because funeral
phone rang, she answered and her face turned pale. The “Oh-NO” that I’ve heard and said many times was spoken. Her hand, fingers opened covered her face as she bowed her head and her shoulders began to shake as she sobbed, unashamedly, she sobbed.
Pacing the floor was next with the questions of “how” “why” “when” sprinkled with an occasional “ I just can’t believe this.” I saw pain, I heard despair and unbelief.
My friend had been told of the unexpected death of a long time close friend. There was no preparation, there was no apparent illness that would have caused this sudden friend’s demise.
After a while the tears subsided. She sat quietly. You could see the aura of shock fading as she began to absorb the reality of what she’d been told. You could see the hurt!
I have an intense respect for the funeral profession. I have been on “this” side of the desks many times in the deaths of a husband, parents and affecting me most deeply, the death of my daughter. The love, compassion and care with which I was treated in each case made me know you are God called to be a funeral director, it is a ministry. Even with the deep respect that I have for each of you and what you do I, too, thought it was “your job”. I now realize that YOU HURT TOO.

Risk Manager Responsibilities As a business owner, you’ve probably noticed that anticipating risk and preventing accidents has a positive impact on your daily operations, your employees’ morale, and your bottom line. You’ve also probably noticed that the job is bigger than it first appears. To make sure the job is done — and done right — many business owners delegate the responsibility to a risk manager. What the risk manager’s role looks like varies. Some businesses choose to add the responsibilities to an existing employee or manager’s duties, while others create a new role that focuses solely on risk management. Whichever model you decide to follow, a risk manager’s job should include some basic characteristics:
Risk Identification. Risks come in many forms — safety hazards, hiring and human resources practices, and regulatory compliance, just to name a few. A risk manager’s primary focus is the detection and mitigation of such risks, which could cause property loss or damage, injury, death, or legal liability. Key in that process is producing a plan for identifying and remedying potentially hazardous conditions and situations. The plan, and the risk manager who creates it, need to be flexible, allowing for the changing needs of the business, employees, and environment.
Performance Measurement. This is where a risk manager proves his or her value to a business. By recording figures related to damage, property loss, and other factors, a risk manager can illustrate the effectiveness of a risk management plan. The facts gathered also feed into risk identification, acting as a guide for further development of the plan.
Documenting the results of a company’s risk management plan also reveals other helpful information — like the hidden costs of a loss — that demonstrates the importance of emphasizing safety on the job. A thorough set of measurements can help avoid financial losses, but can also increase efficiency, by creating a proactive environment in which operations run smoothly and losses are avoided.
Management Communication. To be truly effective, a risk manager must have the full support of the decision makers. This includes a direct line of communication for sharing information with members of senior management. While data that affects a business’s financial performance should be the key element in any report, it’s important to not forget the human side of a loss. Preventing injuries, illnesses, and deaths is a compelling reason to improve workplace safety.
A risk manager is an important part of a high-functioning business. The role requires care, organization, and planning. It also requires passion, confidence, and the energy to take control of a business’s risk management culture. The right person will recognize the importance of designing and following through on a comprehensive risk management plan, helping protect the business’s people and bottom line.
This article is for general information and risk prevention only and should not be considered legal or other expert advice. The recommendations herein may help reduce, but are not guaranteed to eliminate, any or all risk of loss. The
information herein may be subject to, and is not a substitute for, any laws or regulations that may apply. Qualified counsel should be sought with questions specific to your circumstances. © 2020 Federated Mutual Insurance Company.

AFDA Scholarship Information
The Alabama Funeral Directions Association is committed to
excellence in funeral service education. Two AFDA $1,000.00
scholarships ($500.00 per semester) will be awarded to
qualified students whose plans are to complete their education in
an accredited mortuary science school and service the
public in their choice profession in the State of
Alabama.
All scholarship applicants must be sponsored by an
active member of the AFDA. All scholarships will be
awarded at the discretion of the Scholarship
Committee of the AFDA. Awards will be based on
application information, academic record and evaluation. The
decision of the Scholarship Committee will be final. Should
there be no applicants or if the applications do not meet the
standards set by the committee, the committee reserves the right
not to make the award. All awards will be made prior to the
beginning of a full semester.
The student and the school will be notified by mail of the
award. Upon proper invoices from the accredited school, the
funds will be paid directly to the school on a pro-rata basis until
the award is exhausted. The scholarship award is to be used
exclusively for the payment of tuition of mortuary science
classes, and textbooks necessary for the mortuary classes. If for
any reason a recipient should drop a mortuary science required
class o r discontinue their education in the field of mortuary
science, the unused portion will remain in the AFDA
Scholarship Fund.

Perhaps We Can Help …
As you know, the Alabama Funeral Directors Association initiated a new member service a while
back, one we feel you will come to appreciate over time. Admittedly, you may not need to avail
yourself of our placement service at this time, but should the need arise in the future, remember us.
Specifically, AFDA member firms in need of a funeral professional or support staff should e-mail
their position information to Denise at [email protected]. Likewise, licensees or support
staff need only to forward their respective resumes to Denise.
Of importance is the fact that all information will be treated with utmost confidentiality. Information will be submitted to
potential employers only upon your written authorization.
Files will be kept on file for 90 days, but the time limit may be extended as appropriate. Should a position be filled or
employment achieved, the association office should be notified accordingly; not only as a courtesy, but also so that
Denise will not assume that the position is still open or an potential employee is available.

Geoff Halbroooks, Chairman Welcome to 2020!
Wow, what a roller coaster ride we have been on! It would seem that that this whole entire year has been riddled with turmoil! Covid 19 has completely changed our lives and has affected our economy and the stock market in a very bad way! I am happy to say that the FTA is only down around 5 percent. This means that we have weathered the storm well. Just another example of how your pre-need money is taken care of. The Funeral Trust of Alabama Board and its’ associates have been hard at work for you!
If you are not taking advantage of the Member Benefit Fund and you have full-filled some contracts, you may have suffered a loss. These events, the down turn of the stock market, is exactly why we have the Member Benefit Fund. You need to be participating!
Annual renewals are in the process now and we are working with ALDOI to get your renewal information. You may have received a letter requesting an Annual Trust Statement and that the department must have it within 10 days. You can disregard this letter and simply use the semi-annual reports. There will be a requirement in 2021, unless we can get something worked out with ALDOI. Please know that we are engaged daily with those folks and that we have you best interest at heart.
If you have any questions or if you would love to find out about how to join the Member Benefit Fund, give me a call.
Hope to see everyone in September at the Point!!

Key Points of Income Protection
In today’s world, business owners have more on their plates than ever before. Balancing customer, supplier, and employee demands with personal and family commitments can be a challenge. As long as you have the ability to go into work each day and earn a living, you are able to provide for your employees and family. However, what would happen if you became sick or injured and could no longer work? How would you ensure a continued stream of income and support your family while keeping your business running?
Without a plan to protect your income, you may be putting the future of your business and family in jeopardy. While May is known for warmer weather and Mother’s Day, it is also Disability Insurance Awareness Month. A disability insurance policy can offer peace of mind by providing monthly income if you are unable to work due to an injury or illness. When choosing a policy to protect your income, there are several key characteristics to consider.
One of the most important features of a disability policy is the definition of disability. Some products are based on the individual’s inability to work at their specific occupation, and some are based on the inability to work at any occupation for which the individual is reasonably qualified. Generally, a policy that bases the disability benefit on whether you can perform your regular “own” occupation is preferable to one that uses an “any” occupation definition. Here are some other key things to look for:
• Renewability — Can the insurance company change the premium or benefits after the policy is in force? A “non-cancelable” policy guarantees the insurer cannot modify the policy in the future.
• Rehabilitation Benefit — Occupational training may be provided to help an insured return to work in their own occupation or one for which they are reasonably suited.
• Partial Disability — What happens if the insured can still work part time? The ability to work limited hours and still receive a benefit can be desirable.
• Additional Benefits — Disability policies can also offer custom riders that can expand or improve the existing benefits.
Help protect your most valuable asset — the ability to earn an income. Contact your local Federated representative to discuss ways Federated can help you address the catastrophic impact of a disability.

Stan Clemons An Alabama Funeral Director Who’s Not Standing Outside the Fire
In 1993 Country star, Garth Brooks co-wrote and recorded “Standing Outside the Fire” one line being “But you’ve got to be tough when consumed by desire, ‘Cause it’s not enough just to stand outside the fire.”
Stan Clemons felt consumed by the need to serve recently going to New York City to aid in transport and removal of Covid-19 decedents.
Stan is a licensed funeral director who works with Roselawn Funeral Home, Decatur and Valhalla Funeral Home in Huntsville. He became intrigued by the funeral profession while still in high school in Huntsville and went into the DO high school program there.
An email was sent out to funeral directors across the state – one of many calls for assistance in New York City not only from Alabama but from across the nation. Stan felt the tug at his heart strings. His wife, Jill, had concerns for his safety but the call was too strong.
Stan packed and left for New York City at 2 p.m. by 3 p.m. immediately after landing he was sent on his first removal, he stepped right into the fire. He said being from Alabama he didn’t know what to expect, would he be stereotyped as an outsider? Stan says nothing could be further from the truth, he was immediately accepted and made feel welcome, a humbling experience.
The first day he arrived 157 bodies were waiting to be picked up and it continued in that range until the day he left to return to Alabama.
When Stan arrived at the Care Center hospital he found trailers that had been positioned there for more than two weeks and each contained removals that had been there that long. Each was identified only by a number.
Families in search of their loved ones remains would arrive at the Care Center, present the loved ones’ identification number and the search through the body bags would begin. The mental fatigue was a problem after seeing families leave with their retrievals to go straight to the funeral homes and in some cases straight to the cemeteries.
continued on Page 22...
Page 22 The Undertakings - June 2020
Stan recalls one instance where he was called to go to a home to make the removal of a daughter, he reports that before he got to the door the mother of the home had also died and two days later he was called back to the same house as the father in the home had also succumbed to the virus.
Some nights Stan says he’d go back to his hotel, sit down and just cry for the families who’d lost so much. “We deal with tornado deaths and things of nature in the South, but never in my thirty-one years of funeral service have I experienced anything like this,” Stan said.
Once Stan returned to Alabama he had to quarantine, away from family and friends. His temperature was checked three times a day to check for any fever. This was mentally exhausting as well.
The folks in his hometown have called him a ‘hero”. Stan answered that he was simply doing what had to be done. “The heroes are the ones in New York that are still fighting this disease.”
When asked what he would say to his fellow funeral professionals Stan answered, “This is what we train and went to school for, this is what we do. There’s no one else to do what we do. A doctor is a doctor and a nurse is a nurse. We take care of the dead.
In America we always extend helping hand, you never know when you, yourself, may need help. I’d like to thank all the funeral homes in Alabama that reached out to me and my manager in support of what they allowed me to do. And thank you to all those who prayed for me while there.”
Thank you, Stan, you are model for the profession and we are so glad that you didn’t “stand outside the fire.” Welcome home.

Danny riding Oreo
When Danny Otts is not at work you’ll find him with the horses. Danny Otts, Owner/manager of Otts Funeral, Sulligent for 33 years. His funeral home was a start up business after he worked in funeral homes since the age of 17. Danny said it wasn’t his intention to go into the funeral profession, he’d worked at putting up tents and transporting flowers, however, he received “the call”. Danny, like so many others, acknowledges that the funeral profession is indeed a calling. “If you weren't called, then I don’t know how you stay in this demanding
Choosing not to do rodeos Danny, his Dad and brother chose instead to show horses locally and won many awards. At the present time Danny has six horses, one Tennessee Walking horse and the other racking horses. If you’ve never watched a racking horse at work, it is amazing at the speed with which the horse maneuvers.
Danny’s love for horses was pretty much a family thing. He grew up on his

business,” Danny said. He, at the age of 7, got his first Shetland pony, Ginger and then he graduated to a larger Welsh pony, Fancy. Both were kid friendly and would let a rider feel safe and have fun, on horseback.

grandfather’s large cotton and soybean farm. There were plenty of horses and mul es, it was a way of life with most of his immediate family. Danny has five grandchildren, three of them ride. Danny enjoyed riding with his Dad who participated in trail rides until he was 80 years of age. Danny’s Dad died at the age of 84 and Danny misses his riding partner. His favorite place to ride is Hodges Equestrian Park in Hodges, Alabama and the prettiest trail is Big South Fork located near Oneida, TN. There is a big horse facility and you are riding in the Cumberland Mountains. Danny says you’ve got to be conditioned for long rides. His longest has been about 20
miles. “It’s great stress management, you can get anywhere on the back of a horse,” Danny said. For Danny riding is a getaway from the business and an escape that he enjoys, his
his favorite hobby. He fishes and has a boat, but horses are the best. Danny’s words of wisdom for fellow funeral directors is to encourage anyone to have an escape, if not some like horseback riding, something that you enjoy and gives you stress release. Giddy-up, Danny, enjoy your beauties
