The Autism Research Centre is studying an early intervention program called the Social ABCs This program teaches caregivers skills to help their toddler to improve communication and social interaction

This research will examine whether an added attention element makes the Social ABCs program more effective than it is without the attention element

Parents and their toddlers are invited to take part in this study over the next three years

- ldquoSocial ABCsrdquo training will be given to participant families at no cost and all interventions will be delivered in their home Participants must live within a 50 km radius from the Glenrose Hospital- Children receiving more than 1 hour a week of each service of OT SLP or PT may not be able to participate- Recruitment will start early in the new year of 2017 and continue until Spring of 2019

Autism Spectrum Disorder Genomes to Outcomes

The Autism Research Centre is part of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta and located at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital

Families are invited to participate in an ongoing research program to examine the genetic variations in ASD Examination of the broad range of genetic variation in ASD may help to inform diagnosis as well as personalize medical management and treatment for affected individuals

Theyre looking for families who have at least one child (between the age of 2 to 21 years) diagnosed with ASD who are fluent in English and have no pre-existing chromosomal or neurological disorders associated with ASD

Participation involves the following- Developmental and language testing for children- Questionnaires for parents about their childrsquos behavior- Family members (parents and child with ASD) to donate a small blood sample

For more information please contact Olivia Conlon by phone at 780-735-7999 ext 15668 or by email at oliviaconlonalbertahealthservicesca

Early Symptom Development in ASD Role of Attention Control amp Emotional RegulationThe Autism Research Centre is inviting families to participate in an ongoing study toexamine the early signs of ASD in infants and toddlersTwo types of families are needed-- Families WITH a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder AND a younger sibling at 5 months of age- Families WITHOUT a history of autism spectrum disorder who have an infant of 5months of age

This study will measure several areas of development to understand the early signsof ASD- Signs and symptoms of ASD- How children regulate their emotions when playing with examiners and parents- How children examine their visual world Physiological responses when playingwith examiners and parents including heart rate and skin conductance

Parents Perspectives on Their Child with Autism Spectrum Disorders Transition to AdulthoodThe purpose of this study is to examine which factors predict parent stress and family quality of life for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) when that child is making the transition out of high school Specifically we are interested in examining the predictive power of parent coping strategies child behaviour and transition related details in predicting parent stress and family quality of life Your own involvement in the study would minimal it simply involves distributing this survey regarding the study to any eligible parents or guardians through whatever means you usually contact them (electronic notices newsletters pamphlets etc) The names of the parent the child or the organization through which they were contacted will NOT be included on the survey so that the survey can remain anonymous Information that is collected will be kept confidential Parentsrsquo participation in this study is entirely voluntary and as such they may withdraw at any point in timeUpon completion of the survey parents may choose to leave a contact email (to be kept separate from their data) to be entered to win one of five $2000 VISA gift cards

Quality of Life of School-Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Factors that Predict Parents Perspective

The purpose of this study is to examine which factors predict quality of life for schoolaged children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) We are interested in individual and environmental factors which may be related to higher levels of quality of life for these children Should parents choose to participate they will be directed to an online survey that will ask them demographic details and details related to quality of life the childrsquos autism symptoms behaviours functional skills task persistence parentrsquos mental wellbeing siblings school setting friendships and participation in activities outside of school The survey should take roughly 30 minutes to complete Eligible parents must have a child with ASD between 8-11 years old

Transitioning from Early Intervention Services Into the School SystemIs your child about to transition from early intervention services into the school system Based on your experience with the transition process experienced with your child your participation in this study would be greatly appreciated Your involvement would include completing a 20-minute questionnaire that investigates how your child is handling the transition and again once your child is in school full time Also we may invite you to participate in an interview concerning your experiences with the transition process your opinion on how the process should go and in what way the transition has affected your child You will be asked questions about your experiences with the transition team (eg school and early intervention staff) how your child is currently functioning and how you think the transition could have been improved If you choose to participate you will be provided with a summary of your particular childrsquos results which may help you plan for future transitions

If you choose to participate please contact the primary investigator directly at srprice1ualbertaca
