By Daniel Moser (EJNews) - The Jewish community of Edmonton gathered on the evening of June 23, 2016 in a joint venture between the Jewish National Fund (JNF) of Edmonton and the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University (CFHU) of Jerusalem to honour Dr. James Shapiro at this year’s 2016 Negev Gala. As you have no doubt read in previous editions and online, Dr. Shapiro was honoured for his groundbreaking achievements and continued research in the treatment of diabetes. He is specifically known for the development and implementation of an islet transplantation technique known as the ‘Edmonton Protocol.’ Dr. Shapiro was an excellent choice as an honouree because much of his research and work displays a strong connection between Israel and Edmonton, an ideal partnership for the JNF of Edmonton. Both Howie Sniderman and Murray Palay of CFHU in speeches touched on Dr. Shapiro’s continued work and professional exchanges with Dr. Yuval Dor from Hebrew University. After cocktails and schmoozing at the Timms Centre for the Arts, the evening’s events began with brief introductions, and video tributes leading up to the night’s keynote speaker, Colonel Adam Susman, Defence Attache to Canada Embassy of Israel. Col. Susman gave a real voice to the ongoing conflict in Israel. He stressed the reality that being surrounded by your enemies means you must always be prepared, and that’s why continued support, financially and spiritually, helps Israel defend itself, and remain in a constant state of readiness. Susman concluded that despite the plans of Israel’s enemies both at home and abroad, the IDF remains strong, ready for anything and everything, now and in the future. Two of the highlights of the evening were the very personal testimonials and tributes to Dr. Shapiro’s work by members of our own Edmonton Jewish community: Stephen Mandel, and Sari Uretsky Leung. Hearing and seeing Sari and Stephen give such emotional and moving speeches really helped give Dr. Shapiro’s work a face and helped translate the medical and scientific component to his work into humanity. In touching moments both Stephen and Sari were brought to tears when describing their own personal relationships with Dr. Shapiro, and how his work, and his care had improved their lives. A former Mayor of the City of Edmonton, Stephen Mandel added, “The City of Edmonton owes you (Dr. Shapiro) a great deal of gratitude; we thank you tremendously for this (the Edmonton Protocol).” Many gala attendees were quite pleased with the format of an interview with Dr. Shapiro. After a brief introduction from Global TV’s Mike Sobel, he and Dr. Shapiro had a seat on stage and engaged in a discussion on Dr. Shapiro’s life, his work, and the intricacies of the Edmonton Protocol and diabetes research. Sobel moderated the discussion brilliantly making the always-humble Dr. Shapiro feel comfortable and open up while also instigating conversation, and making sure Dr. Shapiro spoke to his audience in laymen’s terms. Sobel and Dr. Shapiro were able to keep their conversation light, including jokes and funny anecdotes here and there; Dr. Shapiro noted he used the name Edmonton Protocol because of a Robert Ludlum book he was reading at the time, and the name just stuck. Discussing the future was something that Dr. Shapiro spoke about quite passionately. The use of stem cells and continued research is the key to unlocking a permanent cure for diabetes, and further reducing the patient’s dependency on insulin and antirejection medications. Dr. Shapiro emphasized that although the Edmonton Protocol and islet transplantation are important discoveries and procedures, there is still a long way to go before his goal and dream of curing Type I diabetes permanently is realized; “it’s baby steps, but steps in the right direction.” Dr. Shapiro noted that with continued research, bright young scientists and global efforts to share research, their goal can be achieved, and they can help make the world a better place. To the public and to the world though, Dr. Shapiro’s work amounts to much more than baby steps, his work is groundbreaking, meaningful, forward thinking, life saving, and heroic. In many ways Dr. Shapiro demonstrates what so many of us hold near and dear about the city of Edmonton, and our community. Like so many Edmonton success stories he has remained something of a hidden gem, doing amazing work, receiving global recognition but remaining humble and dedicated to his cause more than anything else. Gallentertained the crowd with over a dozen Tucker hits, as wellthe naughty stories and bawdy jokes that made SophieTucker a household name.

Gall knew her audience well telling Sophie Tucker storiesreminiscent of the Jewish American shtetel, including jokeson Judaism, feminism, sexism, and the generational dividebetween parents and daughters. Everyone had a great timeand everyone went home smiling.

(EJNews) - Edmonton Talmud Torah alumnus ZevMacklin struck a win for human rights last month whileattending McGill University in Montreal.  Earlier this yearMacklin, an undergraduate student, petitioned the JudicialBoard of the Students Society of University (SSMU) seekinga declaration that, among other things, the holding of ageneral vote of the students to support the BDS movementwas unconstitutional.

On May 31, 2016, Zev received the decision from theJudicial Board that he was successful and the holding of theBDS motion is against the student society’s constitution. This decision means that such a vote can no longer be heldat McGill and while it is specific to the Students Union atMcGill, the decision would likely have applicability to otherUniversities when faced with similar petitions.

Considered by many to be a landmark decision forCanada, on May 31, 2016 the Judicial Board of the SSMUruled against the anti-Israel Boycott and SanctionsMovement, finding that it violates the student union’sconstitution.

This decision followed three failed attempts within the

past 18 months to imposethe discriminatorycampaign on McGillstudents, who rejected it oneach occasion.   The most

recent vote on the issue, which occurred in February, wasaccompanied by anti-Semitic harassment aimed at studentsopposing the movement. Macklin, a former leader withBBYO and Camp BB-Riback, found the situation intolerableand took the matter to the SSMU.

According to the unanimous panel of McGill Law studentswho heard the case, “the inescapable conclusion is thatmotions similar to the BDS motion, which target one specificnation, breach values inherent in [SSMU’s] Constitution andthe Equity Policy.”

Pending ratification by the SSMU Board of Directors, thisjudicial decision will halt the stream of anti-Israel motionsput before the student body during the past few years. Moreover, given the extreme similarity among theconstitutions of various Canadian student unions, boycottmotions may now be invalidated within those bodies, as well.

While the board decision, called a “reference,” still facesratification, the move on June 1 is being hailed as a victoryon a Montreal campus.

The decision “is a clear signal that the SSMU

understands the nature of BDS on campus,” said PatrickBenaroche of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs inQuebec.

In its reference, the board stressed that it was not issuinga judgment, only an “advisory opinion,” and that the opinionallowed for condemning actions by nations – but not thenations themselves.

The union noted that its opinion may have been differenthad the pro-BDS motion restricted itself to calling on McGillto curtail its investment in countries cooperating in Israel’soccupation. But the motion also supported the overall aimsof the BDS movement against Israel itself, the judicial boardsaid.

A complete copy of the Judicial Board’s decision isavailable at edmontonjewishnews.com.

In related news, last month, 155 McGill professors signedan open letter condemning the boycott and sanctionsmovement. In the letter’s preamble, widely respected historyprofessor Gil Troy outlined an alarming rise in anti-Semitism on Canadian university campuses, quotingexplicitly from B’nai Brith Canada’s expose last April onHolocaust denier Ken O’Keefe’s speech at the University ofToronto.

Just for the fun of it, take a moment and think about thepeople you know that have some sort of allergy. About one inevery three people has some form of allergy. It can be hayfever in spring, or getting congested around cats and dogswhen they visit their friend’s house. Or perhaps theymention that they have headaches when they come incontact with gasoline and perfume. Or possibly they stayaway from certain foods because they don’t feel well aftereating them. People get used to living with their allergies byavoiding the particular allergen. Avoidance is not a sign ofhealth. Having to avoid certain places, foods, or animals iscertainly a limitation.

An allergy is a reaction from your immune system.Surprisingly, this is good! After all, your immune system isthere to protect you and is doing a very good job at it whenyou experience symptoms of an allergy. Your body is doingits very best to push the allergen out of your body and toneutralize the effect inside of your body. Remember thatyour body is amazing!

Have you ever heard about people with multiplepersonalities? I remember a book I read when I was ateenager called Sybil, about a lady with fourteenpersonalities! Not long ago, Dr. Phil had a guest with two

personalities. These casesare interesting, becausethey have shown in the pastthat one personality mayhave allergies while the

other may not, even though they are sharing the same bodyand the same immune system. This is telling us that inorder to rid yourself of allergies, you have to address theunderlying cause, which is at the level of the subconscious. The amazing thing is that it only takes one or sometimes twovisits to be completely cleared of your allergies when thecause is addressed!

The medical system addresses allergies with theunderstanding that the immune system is malfunctioning.Consequently, they give drugs to suppress the release ofhistamine (anti-histamine). The cause is never addressed, which means that you have to rely on anti-histamine drugsforever, with no real cure.

Recently I went on a Facebook page of an allergy clinichere in Edmonton to look at people’s comments. It was quitesad to learn of so many people taking medications and shotsevery week for years in attempt to rid their allergies withincredibly poor results. Are these people aware of all thechemical preservatives in each injection and pill? They arethen retested after a few years of treatment to learn thattheir allergies are still present.

If your immune system is like an army that is alwaysready to protect and defend you against an invader, thenyour subconscious is like a surveillance radar that detectsinvaders and warns the army. Suppose the radar mistakes

pollen for a virus or a bacteria. The radar tells your immunesystem army to attack! The allergic symptoms appearrapidly as your immune system works to destroy the pollen. The battleground of your body gets red and swollen. However, while the pollen is actually innocuous, it is theattack by your immune system that causes problems. And itwas all because the radar mistook the pollen for somethingdangerous.

My approach is to teach your radar that pollen (catdander, dairy, grass, dust, etc..) is safe. That way, the nexttime you come in contact with pollen, your radar(subconscious) won’t send the alarm to mobilize your body’sdefenses.

To achieve this I stack different techniques together toincrease the odds of success. Homeopathy and NeuroLinguistic Programming are 2 of the main tools that I use.80% of people see dramatic improvement or total eliminationof their allergies within one or 2 sessions.

The current medical system has no solution to allergies. Iam thrilled that through using a combination of powerfultechniques, I am able to eliminate allergies so that you canreturn to a healthy, allergy free life.

There is no reason to suffer from allergies; the solution issimple, easy, and rapid in most cases.

Allergy is not all about theimmune system

On the afternoon of the second day of Shavuot, twelve of the 17 Jewish residents of OurParents’ Home, together with 6 of their guests, gathered for a simple Yizkor service.

Some came with a spring in their step and chatted as they waited for those a little slower, who paused to park their walkers away from the chairs. Others came from their supportiveliving floor, tenderly led by one of the care staff.

Independent Living resident, Jack Chetner, greeted all.

“Some of us can’t remember what we ate for breakfast, but we do remember those weloved, and who loved us .... our parents, our siblings, sometimes our children. This is whatYizkor is, remembering, and this is why we say kaddish. We celebrate life while honouringthose we loved; and the memory of their love brings comfort.”

The service was short .... poetry from the Sages, modern Israeli poets, Psalms .... allbeautiful words that imbue a spirit of kinship: with each other, and with our peoplethroughout the generations. The familiarity of the kaddish stirred even our resident withdementia, who for a few fleeting moments, drawing the familiar words and tune from hisvery soul, participated fully in the life of our OPH community. Our Parents Home (OPH) islocated in the heart of Edmonton at 10112 - 119 Street and offers many choices to suit a rangeof retirement needs. The OPH vision is a caring community that includes exquisite

(EJNews) - I am often asked what are the best coreexercises. Over the years my answer has changed. Theanswer I give now is not usually what people want to hearbut I believe it is the most accurate – all movements are coreexercises, the best ones depend on your mobility. Like I said, people generally don’t like that answer as it is too broad anddoesn’t give them something to focus on in their workouts orrehab programs. The reason I give this answer is that I wantpeople to shift their focus from training muscles to trainingmovements. All movements require the core muscles towork, some are simply more advanced than others or aredesigned for you to feel your “abs” working.

For example, the “sit-up, or crunch” exercise is designedto target the ab muscles so that’s usually where you feel it.The squat is also a great core exercise but did you ever dosquats in the gym or sit down in a chair and say “wow, I canreally feel that in my abs.” No, you didn’t. Nevertheless, itrecruits the core muscles very well.

Lets take another exercise that is simple to perform andaccessible to almost every population - the standing bicepcurl. This is an exercise that you see a lot in the gym andworkout programs. It is effective at isolating the biceps butis not traditionally thought of or classified as a core exercise.I use this movement a lot with patients to help them use arelatively simple exercise to apply the concept of proximalstability before distal mobility. Instead of thinking about

this movement as a bicep exercise, I encourage patients toapproach it as a spinal stability exercise with dynamic armmovements. That doesn’t sound as good as a “bicep curl”, butit does help people understand that every exercise is anopportunity to improve your core strength – which should bethe point of you doing it in the first place.

It doesn’t matter what your ultimate goal is, the approachto each exercise should be the same – improve your corestrength and spinal stability. So if you have a lot of aches andpains and find most exercises difficult, do not discard theeffectiveness of simple, gentle exercises. If approachedcorrectly with proper technique and steady progressions inintensity, there will be an improvement in core patterning. As an increased load is placed on the extremities, there willbe a load transferred to the core (the torso) that will placemore stress on the spinal and pelvic stabilizers. In otherwords, as you lift more weight it will be harder to keep yourback straight and your shoulders and hips from rotating.

The guy in the gym doing bicep curls with weights thatare clearly too heavy for him – his shoulders are moving androtating, his spine is side bending and extending, his torso isrotating - if you’ve spent any time in a gym you’ll know theguy. If he lowered the weight he would be able to stabilize hisshoulders, spine and pelvis properly and would gain a lotmore from the exercise. The load dictates how effective youwill be with activating the core muscles, stabilizing the spineand pelvis and will also reveal core weaknesses.

When performed correctly and with the right load, mostexercises are great for shoulder, spine and pelvic

stabilization and will improve your mobility. I encourage allmy patients to bring awareness to their abdomen by drawingtheir navel in and work at keeping their spine and pelvisstraight, in-line and stable during all exercises. Easier saidthan done I know!! Work with the best intentions and seekadvice if you’re in need.

I realize that some of you may have mobility issues, jointpain or other problems that may limit your ability toparticipate in a regular exercise program. If this is the case, please seek appropriate medical advice or book anassessment with me to address your individual needs. Mostimportantly, keep active!

Insight Medical Imaging is proud to offer NorthernAlberta and the Greater Edmonton Area Private CT(Computerized Tomography) and Private MRI (MagneticResonance Imaging). Since 2000 we have offered theseprivate services to offset the time strain on publicly fundedMRI and CT scanning. Waiting to have one of theseprocedures performed in a hospital can take many months-even up to a year. Accessing private CT and MRI servicesthrough Insight Medical Imaging is both fast and affordable!

Computerized Tomography (CT) creates a threedimensional image of a scanned area using a series of twodimensional x-ray images. The procedure is safe, effective, and non-invasive. It can be used in both diagnostic andpreventative capacities. CT scanning has incredible

potential to make otherwiseinvasive procedurescompletely painless. Forinstance, VirtualColonoscopy uses CT to look

for abnormalities in the colon and eliminates the need forgeneral anaesthetic and the insertion of a scope.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses magnetic fieldsand radio waves to create images of the body. These imagescan be used to diagnose and investigate progression ofdiseases. MRI uses no ionizing radiation and is the best toolto look for neurological cancers, and to diagnose, stage, andfollow-up other cancers. It is also an effective tool to look atmusculoskeletal injuries which can occur in sport, heavylabor working environments, or simply day-to-day life.Because MRI uses magnetic fields, it is important that anymedical device implants are deemed safe prior to having thisprocedure done.

The word “private” often makes healthcare procedures

appear unattainable to the average person. This couldn’t befurther from the truth. In reality, there are many differentbody parts that can be imaged using CT and MRI. The moreof your body that is imaged, the more the procedure will cost. Most of our Private CT scans range between $400.00 and$600.00, while many of our Private MRI scans fall between$550.00 and $775.00. We encourage patients to check theirinsurance or employer benefits to see what kind of coveragethey may have for private services!

The benefit of going the private route is clear. Because youpay out of pocket as a patient, you can be seen almostimmediately. This means peace of mind and quick results. Some tests, such as Virtual Colonoscopy, require somepreparation for optimal images. At most you will wait 2 days.

The private route is the obvious choice for many. Werecommend patients discuss this option with their primarycare provider, as they are best equipped to determine whichtests are required. As supporters of best practise and safeimaging, Insight Medical Imaging requires a requisitionfrom your doctor prior to performing any imaging.

The honouring of Dr. Shapiro, and format of the evening, was a refreshing change of pace for the Negev Gala inEdmonton. Although Dr. Shapiro did briefly touch on hisupbringing, youth, and family ties, the night was reallyabout the amazing and heroic work he has been able toaccomplish as a medical professional. In his humble fashionDr. Shapiro mentioned multiple times there were people inthe community more deserving of this honour, but thatspeaks to the more traditional way of honouring acommunity member, based primarily on their involvement inJewish life. In Dr. Shapiro JNF and CFHU honoured a manwho is Jewish, and a member of the Jewish community ofEdmonton but also a man whose heroic marvels and lifesaving research trump his religious identity; attendees arericher now for having heard him speak, learn of hisaccomplishments, and how he’s not done yet.

The 2016 Negev Gala was in support of the AravaResearch Development Centre in particular theBiotechnology and Medical Plant Laboratory. Proceeds fromthe Gala will also help support continued research initiativesand collaborations between Dr. James Shapiro and theInstitute of Medical Research Israel-Canada.
