Lung cancer kills more people every year than breast, prostate, colon and pancreatic cancers combined, according to the American Cancer Society. When lung cancer is diagnosed late, the course of action for patients is limited.

Manatee Memorial Hospital has established a multidisciplinary Lung Institute where a dedicated team of physicians and staff work together to determine the best course of action for patients diagnosed with lung cancer. The team includes medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and radiologists, a patient navigator and nursing/ancillary staff.

When people who are at risk for lung cancer receive a low-dose radiation CT scan at the Lung Institute, the results are shared with the patient’s primary care physician as well as the Institute’s multidisciplinary team. For those who are found to have lung cancer, the survival rate may improve through earlier detection, accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment.

Earlier detection, faster diagnosis offer hope to patients with lung cancer

The Lung Institute is located on the first floor of the Outpatient Services Center next door to Manatee Memorial Hospital.

Representative Greg Steube, Senator Bill Galvano and Representative Jim Boyd address Chamber issues and bills at Pancakes and Poliltics held in May. We commend them for their Pancakes and Politics participation over the years!

ON THE COVER (L to R): Sen. Bill Galvano, Rep. Greg Steube & Rep. Jim Boyd.

This trio of men were leaders not only in their own community but engaged in the leadership of our state; sponsoring legislation, debating in committees and negotiating and compromising to represent their constituencies. Some of the biggest victories/bills they sponsored and provided their statesman-like skills included the I-75/University Parkway Corridor Project - of which all of our legislators played a role. Representative Greg Steube’s coordination of a meeting of important players in Tallahassee with FDOT’s Secretary Ananth Prasad proved invaluable in helping secure the funding commitment/acceleration of almost $60 million! This was also a collaborative effort in our region with the Sarasota Chamber, EDC, Tampa Bay Partnership, STARTUPS and Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.

Representative Jim Boyd was instrumental in helping with flood insurance options to purchase policies in the private market; The highest funding ever for education with revisions in the PECO funding formula, USF Sarasota and Manatee Campus receiving new, recurring funds to expand their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program and Small Business Development Center funding and SCF’s over $8 million library renovation - Senator Bill Galvano’s role was very helpful in stewarding appropriations; Beach restoration ($2 million for Manatee County); Enterprise Florida’s ($71 million) funding for statewide economic development, and House bill 709 on Alzheimer’s Disease Research ($1.3 million) that will allow for institutions such as the local Roskamp Institute to

Leading the Way in Our Community and State

seek peer-to-peer grants for their work.

The Manatee Chamber worked successfully on all of the above issues (and more) as well as some that unfortunately didn’t pass muster this session. Reducing and ultimately eliminating the sales tax on commercial rentals/leases and parity for Developments of Regional Impact (DRI’s) determination did not advance.

However .. with $500 million in tax relief accomplished this session (compared to billions in shortfalls a few years ago), a $3.1 billion reserve, and NO raids on the Transportation Trust Fund, we concur with Senator Bill Galvano’s statement at the Recap that, “this was one of the best sessions he has ever experienced (in his 12 plus years in Tallahassee).”

Although theoretically the session is over, many refer to “second session” in Tallahassee occurring which is ensuring what was passed by legislators is signed by the Governor. Look for possible alerts from the Chamber encouraging members to contact Governor Rick Scott to sign bills of importance to our business community.

In addition to the three legislators on our front cover, we are grateful to Senator Arthenia Joyner (incoming Senate Minority Leader) and Representative Darryl Rouson who were unable to attend the Pancakes and Politics Recap Breakfast when the picture was taken at the IMG Country Club. They round out our Manatee County Legislative Delegation serving our community.

Thank You to Our 130+ Project Teach VolunteersA very special thank you to more than 130 volunteers who participated in Project T.E.A.C.H. On the morning of Friday, May 9th, our volunteers gathered at 7:30 AM at Freedom Village Retirement Community for a breakfast orientation sponsored by Manatee Education Foundation. At 8:30, the

volunteers headed to their assigned fourth grade classes all over Manatee County where they spent an hour with a classroom full of future entrepreneurs and business owners.

The volunteers shared their business backgrounds and perspectives with the fourth graders. Students then thought about what business they would like to be in by drawing their own business cards. Dreams and ideas of the students ranged from astronauts to zoo keepers and many things in between. Without the help of our sponsor, Manatee Education Foundation, and the support of Tropicana, Freedom Village, and Palm Printing, this year’s program would not have been such a success. For more information about Project T.E.A.C.H. and other workforce education initiatives, please contact Jahna Leinhauser at 941-748-4842, ext. 172.

April Coffee Club

Saint Stephen’s would like to thank our fellow chamber members who attended the Coffee Club on April 24th. The breakfast provided a great networking opportunity and we were pleased to showcase our new Moore Athletic Complex at Turner Fields.

We would like to thank all of our raffle donors for a record number of wonderful prizes and the Tropicana orange juice donation was enjoyed by all. We cordially invite you to attend one or more of our home athletic events in the coming year.

If you are interested in learning more about Saint Stephen’s, please visit our website at www.saintstephens.org. We are currently accepting students in all grades [PK3 – 12] for the 2014 – 2015 school year. Please contact Director of Admissions Linda Lutz with questions or to arrange a tour of the campus: [email protected] or 941-746-2121 ext. 1568.
