Page 5: June 2011 - PCA GPX

Again this year, once John’s scooter & camera gear was off loaded, he was gone. You would have thought

he was competing in the 37th Annual Toyota Grand Prix Long Beach. I guess you could say he was, trying and getting to all the photo locations and taking as many different pictures as he could. We are still editing the 1889 pictures he took on Saturday & Sunday; that’s not including the ones I took, or the shots he took Friday at the 64th Newport to

Ensenada Yacht Race.

After arriving home at midnight Thursday from an out of state medical confer- ence, we started the weekend Friday morning at the 6am mandatory photographers meeting. We then picked up our photo vests, track credentials, and special park- ing permits. Fortunately, security recognized us from last year and, after much discussion, let us into the parking structure before we had any credentials. Also, John somehow convinced Chris to upgrade his credential to the highest level (hot grid) like last year. After checking out some new shooting locations, we set up our race track movement schedule for the weekend, and when John decided not to shoot the Driver Celebrity Autograph signings, we hurried to a Newport Beach press boat, to shoot the noon start of the 64th Annual Newport to Ensenada Race. We were back in Long

Beach by 4pm to cover the end of Friday’s racing and the Patron party.

Saturday rolled around way to early; again we had the mandatory 6am meeting. We left the media center fortified with coffee and headed out for a long day of racing, only returning to the media center for lunch. The fan favorite race of the day was, of course, the Toyota Celebrity Race. The pole sitter was sup-

posed to be Stephen Moyer. Unfortunately he rolled his car on Friday and withdrew from Saturday's race. There was specula-tion about the reasons for his dropping out. Actor William Fichtner prevailed as the overall & Celebrity winner in a highly

competitive race with Japanese drift racer Ken Gushi finishing closely behind Fichtner to come in second and first in the Pro category. Saturday was also John’s favorite race, the American Le Mans Series, with lots of Porsches. The GTC class

team of Tim Papas and Jeroein Bleekemolen in their #54 Black Swan Porsche took first place in the GTC, an improvement from second place last year, second Sweedler/Keen in their #23 Porsche and third was Potter/Stanton in their #77 Porsche.

.

Sunday arrived with all the festivities and crowds. After editing photos most of the night, it was great to be allowed to sleep in an extra hour (mandatory meeting moved to 7am). The crowds were enthusiastic. The first race of the day was the Firestone

Indy Lights; a 60 minute / 45 lap race (which ever comes first). The race ended at the 60 minute mark with Conor Daly taking the checkered flag, his first win in Indy Lights and only his third series start. Second was Estaban Guerrieri, also his best Indy

Lights finish. With Indy Lights finished, we grabbed lunch and headed for new shooting locations for the main event.

Because of John's wheel chair, we were not able to get to Turn One. However, I received special access for photographers to be up on the Turn One raised platform. So off we went, John to the pit/grid area just before the start line and me a v-e-r-y long walk to Turn One (with my amateur point and shoot camera). Surprisingly, I must say, I did get some good shots that even

impressed John. The Pole position was Penske’s with Will Power driving. Powers led for the first third of the race with Hunter-Reay and Conway chasing him. On lap 35 Briscoe took the lead with Hunter-Reay close behind. The lead changed back and forth between Briscoe, Hunter-Reay and Powers until lap 72 when Conway, who had driven a very steady race, passed Bris-coe crossing the Finish line 6 seconds ahead of Briscoe and Franchitti placing third. As in 2010, Andretti Racing was on the podium with a first place trophy. The trophy presentation didn’t go as scripted as Franchitti couldn’t wait to spray the other

drivers and team owner Michael Andretti with Champagne.

The last race of the weekend was the Pirelli World Challenge Championship. Porsche did not win, but James Sofronas in his GMG/Porsche GT3 took 2nd in the GT class; Patrick Long in his Porsche 911 GT3 also had the fastest race lap in the GT

series. Unfortunately, the winner was Brandon Davis, a local racer from Huntington Beach in his Ford Mustang Cobra. Third place was Jason Daskalos in a Dodge Viper, as the Porsches kept dropping out. Maybe next year?

Like last year, we had a great time and sincerely appreciate Chris Esslinger and his staff ’s support at Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. However, we sure did look forward to sleeping past 5am on Monday.

Looking for an EditorOver the next year I will be winding down

my position as editor.

It's not that I don't enjoy the job, but it's time for someone else to step up.

I will be happy to assist in the transition and even continue in a lesser capacity, but the primary responsibility for editing

Gone Fishin'

I'm sorry I'm not going to be able to join everyone at our June Breakfast Club this Saturday. I'm off to To-ronto for a family function, kinda like Going Fishin'.

We certainly have a lot of events coming up. Our recent Concours at the Lakewood Country Club worked out extremely well. If you were there, you got quite a few treats, including a close look at Wayne Dempsey's Jagermeister 962, a '73 RS, a Greg Brown's Guards Red Carrera GT, Eddie Swanenburg's newly restored 914-6, which was the hands down winner of The People's Choice award, and too many others to mention here. We also had a beautiful cake to celebrate the Grand Prix Region's 30th Anniversary. For those of you who were NOT there, you'll see our coverage in the July Circuit.

Please take a look at the club calendars on pages 10 & 11. I'm sure you will find several upcoming events of interest. Everyone is working hard and having fun, so come on out and join us.

Sleazy Dog Construction

On the Cover...Last month Jimmie Mitchell brought his early 911 Targa to Breakfast Club. It had been a long time since we'd seen it due to a fire over a year ago. They did a good job restoring it. So, I was more than a little surprised when Jimmie showed up at the May Breakfast iwith his new Carrera GTS.

What a beautiful car. And, the smile on Jimmie's face was as big as I've ever seen. I'm just afraid to see what he shows up in for our June event!!!

June 2011

Holy mackerel, it's June already? As fast as our events are coming (and going) it's no wonder my head is spin-ning. Two weeks ago we had a fabulous Concours at the Lakewood Country Club. Thanks to Dal Lee and Suesan Way and all the volunteers to making that hap-pen. We'll cover it in the July Circuit. Stay tuned.

Last weekend we were in Buttonwillow for the PCA Club Race, Drivers Ed and Time Trial that we put on together with the Golden Gate Region. This was anoth-er fun weekend with great weather, nice cars, fun people and (except for my STUPID speeding ticket going over the Grapevine), and just a FABULOUS event.

June doesn't slow down. We've got a 2-day weekend featuring a Drivers Ed on Saturday and an Autocross on Sunday at the Pomona Fairplex. They don't get much closer than Pomona. If you've ever thought about get-ting your car out for a little legal exercise, THIS IS IT! If you've wanted a trained instructor to show you the ropes, THIS IS IT! Registration is now open, and you can see more information on page 12.

On July 10 we're back at the Fairplex, this time for a PCA National DE Instructor training, which we are also hosting with the San Gabriel Valley region. If you have half a dozen autocrosses, DEs, or other Per-formance Driving events under your belt... If you are an instructor but have not gone through this training OR, if you think you'd like to find out about someday becoming an instructor, this is the place. PCA sends out a special team to do this, and they don't happen very often, so take advantage of this opportunity. If you have any questions, send me an email or give a call. There is a flyer on page 13 with more info.

Also in July is the Arredondo Motorsports Open House and BBQ, on the 16th. Art and his family put on a great feed, and they have a great shop to hang out in. Take a look at the ad for this on page 16.

As soon as we can slow down enough to catch our breathe, we'll be looking at adding a few tours and tech sessions to our calendar. There are plenty of people who have offered and who we have had conversations with; we just need to sit down for a few minutes and make them happen.

By the way, our December 3rd Holiday Party has been confirmed again for the Long Beach Yacht Club. This year will be a very special event given that we are cel-ebrating our 30th Anniversary as a region of the Porsche Club of America. You can expect some unusual activi-ties and things of interest. Stay tuned.

CALLING ALL RACING ENTHUSIASTS

We train! The only requirement is your enthusiasm and love of racing

Have you always wanted to be involved with racing without the high cost of campaigning your own car? One way is to help coordinate Performance Driving events. Get the second best seat in the house! As a Flagger, you will be stationed on the “corners”, providing course condition infor-mation to the drivers via flags, relaying on-track incidents to track control and helping to keep participants safe. Flaggers are truly irreplaceable: Without them, the race doesn’t go on!

The Grand Prix Region currently hires Corner Workers for our events, but the quality of those workers is not consistent. The idea came up that, instead of hiring outside groups to do this, why don't we put together a team of GPX Corner Workers.

Bob and Karen Lewis are two GPX members who got the bug a couple of years ago, got trained by the best as Flag and Grid workers, and have been staffing racing events like the Long Beach Grand Prix and venues like Laguna Seca, Auto Club Speedway and others ever since.

Bob and Karen would be willing to train a team of GPX members and their friends to be profes-sional level Flag and Grid workers.

If you have any interest, please contact Bob & Karen Lewis at [email protected], or give Skip Carter a call at (619) 992-9927

Savannah Parade will include several guided driving tours to points of interest while cruising the beauti-ful countryside of Georgia and South Carolina. These tours have become some of the most popular activities of the week, and you can be sure that this year’s will not disappoint!

The Porsche Club Tech Academy will provide participants with a well-rounded curriculum. All Porsche models will be covered. Upon completion of three hours of study (attending three sessions) you will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts diploma for your achievement.

Savannah is a hotbed of cultural attractions and we will certainly take advantage of them. Offerings include a tour of nearby Hilton Head Island, the Rose Hill Plantation, the charming nearby towns of Bluffton and Beaufort and the communities on Tybee and Skidaway Islands. Other events include a 5K Run/Walk around Hutchin-son Island, slot cars, the Michelin Drive & Com-

pare, a golf tournament, a helpful Concierge on-site all week, Parade 101 class-es, and National awards including the newsletter, website, Enthusiast of the Year, Family of the Year, Region of the Year, and Public Service awards. We even plan to bring back the police escorted Parade of Porsches, so we can show Savannah we are there with style!

Also remember the Ban-quets that round out each evening!

Porsche Parade in Savannah, Georgia July 31 — August 6By Cole Scrogham

Parade 2011 is coming up quickly. When Parade junkies start thinking of the week of fun and excitement with their Porsche and PCA friends, they begin with the main events; the Concours and Autocross. As much fun as they are, one can overlook the other opportunities that exist during this action packed week. Rallies and driving Tours are also great fun, as is the challenging Tech Quiz. Don't think you need to bring a Porsche either. While it cer-tainly enhances the experience, many people fly in and do what they can with a rental car.

The TSD Rally masters this year have ample roads for exploration, and regardless of your experience level they will have something for you.

The last of the “competitive” events is the Parade Technical and Historical Quiz. It will test your knowledge of Porsche history, family trivia and model lines over the last 60 plus years! The Quiz features 50 general and 25 “Model” specific questions (you pick the model you wish to compete in).

Parade Kids look forward to plenty of action includ-ing RC cars and boats, make and take craft projects, pool games, karaoke, and outdoor movies. Kids can make their own art piece on Sunday to enter in the Art Show. There is a gallery showcasing the work of our amateur photographers. There will be a ghost hunt, bike rally and pool party for the teens and tweens in addi-tion to plenty of gaming and hanging out with friends in the Kids’ Lounges. Babysitting and activities will be provided.

Hospitality is the place to meet your friends, have a morn-ing coffee, an afternoon repast and check your email? The answer is the Parade Hospitality! Parade Sponsors have booths to view their products and more than a few Porsches on display. You won't want to miss the Goodie Store: Porsche merchandise, PCA-logo merchandise, Parade-logo mer-chandise, models, books, and special items not seen in past Parades can all be expected.

The Gimmick Rally is designed to provide a scenic, relax-ing and fun outing for everyone, including families. The

May 7 Breakfast Club Story by Peter Ross, photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip CarterThe first Saturday of May brought out the usual flair to the Grand Prix Region’s Monthly Breakfast Club Meeting at Frisco’s Diner in Long Beach, a lot of really nice people and a lot of really good looking Porsches.

Nestled among the gorgeous cars, was a brand new 2011 meteor gray Porsche GTS that was purchased weeks before by our GPX Membership Chair, Jimmie Mitchell. This is indeed a magnificent car, but then again, so were all of the other Porsches that adorned the parking lot.

As usual, the meeting was chock-full of information on present and upcoming PCA club events, including a tech session being held later on that day at 911 Design's shop in Montclaire. Dave Hockett handled MC duties that detailed the various announcements, as well as, the raffle of free give-away prizes. The 50/50 raffle prize was won by Linda Nolasco. The meeting covered a host of upcoming events such as the Concours, Buttonwillow and Fairplex driving events, DE Instructor Training and the Porsche Parade 2011.

At the end of the Breakfast Club Meeting, and prior to the GPX Board Meeting, our members were also invited to attend and participate in the new Flagger School, which was hosted and instructed by GPX member Bob Lewis, who did an incredible job covering the incredibly important aspects of track safety.

In attendance at Breakfast were Norman Abell, Frank Alvis, Bob Baddy & Junko Kamei, John Barrone, Carl & Christine Bloom, Bruce Brown, Joe Bryant, Jeremy & Joey Campbell, Dave Carpenter, Skip Carter & Suesan Way, Jack & Ginny Case, Arturo Chaparro, Richard Clewett, Dan Dagert, Frank Daugherty, Yaw Davis, Norma Dawson, Mark Dodson, Steve Firshein, Albert Franco, Marty Friedman, Robert Fre-idman, Freddy Garcia, Marty & Brita Goldsmith, Lorenzo Gray, Jeff Haas, Charles Harrell, Rick Hartman, Arsenio Hernandez, Ron Hlavka, Dan & Dave Hockett, Bruce Jephcott, Patricia Geary-Johnson, Rick Lester, Dickson Lew, Bob & Karen Lewis, Rico Lopez, Roger Lubeck, Chet Malveaux, Frank Matranga, Frank Medrano, Phil Millard, Claude Mitchell, Jimmie Mitchell, Susan Moard, Tom & Michelle Mueller, Mike Nolasco & Amy Chap, Linda Nolasco, Vincent Parker, John & Patty Reilly, Herb Reynolds, Sandi Richlin, Al Rosenberg, Peter Ross, How-ard & Gail Sachs, Ron Shanon, Dan Stern, Steve Sweet, Rick Tuey, Rob Wessels, Greg White and Earl Yessmann. As usual, I hope I didn’t omit anyone or misspell any names. If so, I truly apologize. If any of your contact information has changed (address, phone, email), please contact PCA at www.PCA.org and update your info. In addition, please notify Skip Carter, [email protected], and Jimmie Mitchell, [email protected], with the same update.

If you do not receive a couple of emails a month from us, it's because we don't have your email address. It's the easiest way to keep abreast of club activities. Send Skip your email at [email protected].

Beyond that, we’ll see you at the next Breakfast Club Meeting.

by Bruce Herrington, Riverside RegionBook Reviews for PorschephilesPORSCHE — The Man and His Carsby Richard von Frankenberg, published in 1961 by Robert Bently, Cambridge, Mass.

PORSCHE - The Man and His Cars was the first major biography of Dr. ing. h.c. Ferdinand Porsche. It remains one of the best. It is a perennial reference for the preparation of the General section of all the model specific Technical Quizzes at the Porsche Parade. No died-in-the-wool Porsche enthusiast should be without a copy. The book traces the ancestral roots of the Porsche family, complicated by changes in nationality for some of the towns in question, as European dynasties ebbed and flowed. The description of Dr. Porsche's youth makes him sound like a Tom Swift, conducting suc-cessful electrical experiments in secret, against the express orders of his father. Success was sufficient, however, for teen-age Porsche to make his house the only one in the village to have electric lights.

It was his electrical experiments that caused Dr. Porsche to become involved in cars, because when the Jacob Lohner company wanted to expand its carriage business into automobiles, it decided to focus on electric cars, and hired Porsche to design them. Notably, one of these cars (to which Dr. Porsche contributed so much (at the age of 24) that it was known as the Lohner-Porsche), was a car with a gasoline engine, and electric motor propulsion. If that sounds like the definition of a hybrid, then Dr Porsche had hybrids in production long before EPA/Detroit ever thought of them. Oh, and along the way, he had built a racing electric car (with unique streamlining) which he drove to shatter the record for the Semmering track. WWI buffs may be interested to note that in 1902, Arch Duke Ferdinand oversaw military maneuvers using a Porsche designed staff car, with young reserve infantryman Ferdinand Porsche as driver.

To one steeped in the lore of Porsche automobiles, it is some-what surprising to find that, as presented in this book, Dr. Porsche's most productive years of automotive design, were probably the late teens through the early 1930s. But after all, a Porsche automobile first saw the light of day in 1949, and Dr. Porsche died at the end of January, 1952. It is son Ferry (given a car capable of 30mph as a 10 year old) who is really

responsible for the Porsches now on the road.

In addition to automobiles, Fer-dinand Porsche designed military transporters, the great grandfather of the beetle engine, aircraft engines, a balloon supported 'helicopter' and, of course, race cars of various types, many of which he drove himself. The roster of his employers is the who's-who of the European auto-

mobile industry. And, every job resulted in stories of his focus, hands-on involvement, genius, and temper! He did not suffer fools, be they mechan-ics, engineers, or members of the board. Another fascinating, little known story presented in this book, is the effort of the Stalin regime to recruit Porsche to be “State Designer of Russia.” Instead, in 1931 Dr. Porsche opened his own design firm, pirating key associates from the various compa-nies for whom he had worked and, in turn, doing contract design work for those same firms.

PORSCHE - The Man and His Cars makes clear that in addition to complete cars he de-signed, such as the Lohner-Porsche, Dr. Porsche was intimately involved with designing racing modifications for quite a number of vehicles to which his name is not attached. In effect he served as would now be called the Engineer for a variety of racing teams. Unlike most Porsche books, this one is not just about the cars; it really

is about The Man — and what a man he was. All in all, this book presents a fascinating story of a complex individual who has left an indelible mark on the world of automobiles, all because he was a kid fascinated by electricity.

PORSCHE - The Man and His Cars contains 32 chapters (plus a chronology) in 224 8-1/2” by 5-1/4” pages, with 52 black and white plates. These plates illustrate everything from Porsche designed elec-tric race cars of 1900 and the mixed drive Lohner-Porsche of 1902, to the 356B of 1959 (and many Porsche designed race cars in between). Though a 1935 'beetle' is included, pictures of Porsche's WWII de-signs, the beetle derived German jeep, the Panzer Tank and artillery items, are notably absent.

Tech Notes from Tony Callas & Tom Prine(courtesy of Callas Rennsport)

Computerized Engine Management

Tony Callas

Porsche street cars first received Computerized Engine Management for the 1980 model year. By today’s stan-dards, the early version was very elementary. Computer-ized Engine Management is obvious by the installation of an oxygen sensor to monitor oxygen content in the exhaust stream. This was Porsche’s approach to improve engine performance and tailpipe emis-sions in most operating conditions. In 1984 Porsche installed a full comput-erized engine management system named Digital Motor Electronics (DME) in the 911 Carrera. DME controlled not only the fuel injection but also the ignition system, making it a complete package with one control unit for the entire Engine Manage-ment System.

A basic description of the computer-ized engine management system is a control unit (computer), also known by some as the brain, which receives data from sensors on the engine that are monitoring its operation. These sensors monitor engine temperature, RPM (or speed), throttle position, intake air (with an air flow or air mass meter) and an oxygen sensor for exhaust oxygen content (just to name a few). By monitoring these vari-ous engine operating inputs, the control unit does the math and computes the proper output delivery for the fuel injectors and ignition timing, also dependent on the driver’s request.

The control unit has the ability to make changes to adjust the amount of fuel going into the engine. One example would be if the control unit sees

that the engine is running leaner than normal (i.e. exces-sive amounts of oxygen in the exhaust stream) the computer will adjust accordingly and the engine will run richer on fuel.

In this day of computerized automotive electronics, most cars can have 100 or more control units. The modern automobile is a huge rolling laptop with a computer for al-most every driver input. Due to the sensitiv-ity of these control units, extreme care should be taken when maintenance, diagnosis and repairs are performed.

ED: Callas Rennsport is a full service repair and maintenance shop for Porsche and BMW automobiles. Tony Callas and Tom Prine operate Callas Rennsport at 19080 Hawthorne Blvd in Torrance.
