On the Cover...If you went to the L.A. Auto Show a couple of weeks ago, one of the things that you were treated to was the World Premier of the new 911 RSR.

This appears to be the largest change to the venerable 911 RSR in its history. The engine is in front of the rear axle... That has to be good!!!

But, read about it inside.

with some of the PCA national staff. This year PCA Presi-dent Caren Cooper, Secretary Cindy Jacisin, Executive Direc-tor Vu Nguyen and our Digital Media Coordinator Damon Lowney were there all weekend. This is about as casual an opportunity as you will ever have to speak with some of the people who run PCA. They are nice folk and easy to talk to.

Sleazy Dog Construction

On November 16th I attended the L.A. Auto Show VIP Event. This event is a dealer preview that I’ve been lucky enough to attend for the last few years. Typically there is a North American, or World introduction of a new model Porsche. This year Porsche featured the new re-designed Pana-mera with the World Premiere of the Panamera 4 E Hybrid Executive. If you had issues with the original design, I believe that this re-design addresses some of those original issues. The new Panamera is an extremely beautiful and well-appointed automobile. Also featured was the new “mid-engine” 911 RSR that will be running in the 2017 WeatherTech Sports Car Series in North America. It’s a beautiful racing machine, and should be extremely competitive.

Tech Tactics West on the November 19th weekend was a great event. Every year PCA and PCNA puts on this very informa-tive and interesting event at the Porsche West Coast Training Center in Ontario. This year featured Rod Emery talking about the restoration of the Gmund 356/2, the very first Le Mans class winner for Porsche in 1951. Please copy this link for the story on this fantastic Porsche: http://www.emorymo-torsports.com/special-projects/porsche-gmund-sl-063

Some of the other featured technical speakers spoke about the new 718 Cayman, the 2017 Panamera, Porsche Classic Parts and the Collector Car Market. Great stuff! Tickets for the Saturday program sold out almost immediately. Sunday had a few empty seats. Porsche will be moving out of the Ontario facility soon, so we don't know what the venue will be for the 2017 Tech Tactics. But keep your eyes open. There will be plenty of notice about it, but you will want to register early.

On January 14 we’re going to the Petersen Automotive Muse-um, where we’ll get a docent led tour of the “Vault”. After the tour, we’re free to roam the rest of the museum on our own. They just opened a new exhibit on “The Art of Bugatti”. And, hopefully, they’ll still have the fantastic exhibit of Porsche race cars.

Some of the other events lined up for 2017 will be a visit to the just opened Porsche Experience Center in February, Day Away Drivers Ed and our annual Santa Monica Mountains Fun Run to Paradise Cove in March. I’m also working on going back to Mt. Wilson for a night of star gazing on either the 60-inch or 100-inch telescopes. The 100- inch telescope is more expensive for us, and takes fewer people, but the op-

portunity to view from that big machine is pretty exciting. If any of you have thoughts about it, let me know.

We are having fun in Grand Prix region. Our 2017 calendar is starting to fill in. GPX has always had a reputation for being a fun region (long before I was a member here). Parties and tours have always been high on our list of activities.

Our Holiday Party at the Long Beach Yacht Club is coming up soon. This old wooden building is such a great place to do our event. Walking around looking at the memorabilia really speaks to the age and quality of this organization. They certainly take good care of us each year.

We've got articles on our last two tours in this issue. Orange to Airplanes and Angeles Crest. A special thanks to those of you who write these articles and take the photos. It certainly makes my job easier.

I did not cover the L.A. Auto Show in this issue (probably January), but I did run a story on what was, for me, the most spectacular car at the show - the new 911 RSR. A mid engined 911! It has to be a wickedly fast car, and we'll see it for the first time on a track at the Daytona 24 Hours in late January. 2017 looks like it could be a very good year for Porsche Motorsports.

I want to welcome Charlie Carchedi to an editor position with The Circuit. Charlie is a retired school teacher and member of GPX. As a teacher he worked with InDesign edit-ing a school yearbook each year. He offered to lend a hand several months ago. I was finally able to sit down with him in front of a computer. I am very happy to have Charlie's help. He laid out a few articles in this issue. He is very easy to work with and I appreciate his help.

There are lots of other activities we need to report on, but this newsletter only has so many pages. Tech Tactics was a few weeks ago (it ties in to the L.A. Auto Show and the Porsche display there). Tech Tactics has been around for about five years now. It has always teetered between a one or two day event because of attendance. This is a fabulous event and we know that as it becomes better known it will always be a sellout. This year Saturday sold out early, and Sunday was within 30 registrants of being full. Besides all the great technical information (a fabulous discussion about Porsche Resale Value), you get an opportunity to meet and speak

NEW 911 RSR FOR LE MANSSTORY AND PHOTOS COURTESY OF PORSCHE AG

Porsche will tackle the 2017 racing season with an all-out newly developed GT racer. The new 911 RSR makes full use of the breadth of the Le Mans 24 Hours GT regulations, and in addition to systematic lightweight design, features the ultra-modern, flat-six unit positioned in front of the rear axle. The four-litre, extremely light aggregate features direct fuel injection as well as a rigid valve drive and is characterised by outstanding efficiency. The new 911 RSR will make its debut at the Daytona 24-hour race in January 2017.

“While retaining the typical 911 design, this is the biggest evolution by now in the history of our top GT model,” says Head of Porsche Motorsport Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser. The new 911 RSR is a completely new development: the sus-pension, body structure, aerodynamic concept, engine and transmission have all been designed from scratch. The engine concept has enabled the designers to install a particularly large rear diffuser. Combined with a top-mounted rear wing adopted from the LMP1 race car, the 919 Hybrid, the level of downforce and the aerodynamic efficiency were signifi-cantly improved.

“For the 911 RSR, we deliberately focussed on a particularly modern and light normally-aspirated engine, as this gave our engineers immense latitude in developing the vehicle. Apart from that, in principle, the LM-GTE regulations stipulate the absolute equality of various drive concepts, as the torque characteristics of turbo and normally aspirated engines are aligned.” Depending on the size of the restrictor, the new normally-aspirated unit puts out around 375 kW (510 hp). Shift paddles on the steering wheel actuate the sequential six-speed gearbox with a magnesium housing, which delivers power to the 31-centimentre-wide rear wheels. The change-over to the new engine generation is now complete. After the 911 GT3 R and the 911 GT3 Cup, the spearhead of Porsche GT racing cars is now also powered by the same cutting-edge six-cylinder boxer engine family.

Porsche has already thoroughly pushed the limits with the concept of the 911 – in 1996 with the 911 GT1. With great success: In 1998 the 911 GT1 achieved the 16th overall vic-tory for Porsche at the Le Mans 24-hour race. Back then, the fastest vehicle in the field emerged from the GT1 class.

For the first time, a Porsche GT race car features state-of-the-art assistance systems: the new 911 RSR is equipped with a radar-supported collision warning system, the so-called “Collision Avoid System”. Even in the dark, the faster LMP prototypes are detected early enough and misunderstand-ings can be avoided. A new safety cage concept and a new, rigidly-mounted racing seat enhance driver safety. With the seat fixed to the chassis, the pedalry can now been moved and adjusted to fit the driver.

The new 911 RSR’s serviceability has also been significantly improved: Entire elements of the carbon-fibre body can be exchanged completely in a very short time thanks to clever quick-release fasteners. Moreover, changes to the suspension setup can be performed much more quickly and easily.

With the look of the body wrapping, the 911 RSR is striking out in a new direction: For the first time, the GT racer bears the new factory design that has further developed the clear and dynamic design language of Porsche Motorsport. From a bird’s eye view, a hint of the Porsche emblem silhouette can be seen. The basic colours remain white, red and black.

In the 2017 season, the factory is expected to run the new 911 RSR at 19 outings which equates to more than 140 hours of racing. With two factory-entries, Porsche will tackle the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) includ-ing the 24 Hours of Le Mans as well as the American IMSA Weathertech Championship. The new racer will celebrate its debut under the toughest conditions at the IMSA sea-son opener in Daytona on 28-29 January. “We’re very well prepared for this,” says Marco Ujhasi, Head of GT Works Sport. “Since its first rollout in Weissach in March this year we’ve covered 35,000 test kilo-metres on racetracks in Europe and North America – that’s more than in the development of any other Porsche GT racer.”

Oranges to Airplanes TourOctober 15, 2016

Story by Alan JohnsonPhotos by Jimmie Mitchell, Kesse Ho

In 1872 the Department of Agriculture sent samples of an orange from Brazil that was new to America, the seedless Navel Orange. Those sent to Riverside flourished with a warm climate and the water from a 20 mile irrigation canal then expanded throughout Southern California. The California Citrus History State Park documents that agricultural phenomenon.

After seeing the museum exhibits, docent Jeff Kwiecien led the group on a 90 minute Grove Walk explaining that young citrus trees take about 10 years to reach full production and can continue producing for 70 years or more. There are many varieties growing there besides the navel. As the navel has no seeds, he explained how it is propagated by grafting bud stock onto root stock. If you want a dwarf tree, use slow growing root stock. Though the navels are not yet

ripe, the Satsuma breed of Mandarin oranges were sweet and ready for picking of samples to take home.

After a short drive we gathered again at the March Field Air Museum. With over 70 planes, its exhibits range from a WW1 replica of a French Nieuport Biplane to modern F-16s, an SR-71 Black Bird, Cruise Missiles and Drones. Our tour was led by Air Force veteran Mike Schmitz. Though not a pilot, Mike was very knowledgeable about the planes, engines, avionics and other systems. Standing under the wing of a B-52 still active, though designed in the ‘50s; inside the bomb bay of a WW2 B-29 or staring into the intake of a MIG-25... The collection is impressive. There is even a replica Viet Nam Forward Operating Base complete with UH-1 Huey, slicks and gunships, artillery, guard towers and sand bagged huts. Alas, too many planes and not enough time.

ANGELES CREST RUNTHE SUBLIME, THE FANTASTIC AND THE GRAVELLYSTORY BY HARRY KRAUSHAAR PHOTOS BY BOYD KRUGER, RON BEALE, NOEL MUYCO & HARRY KRAUSHAAR

Saturday, September 17, 2016 was a great day to be a Porsche driver or passenger. We had 28 cars attacking Angeles Crest Highway, one of the most fun roads to drive in Southern California. Jeff Peck and Alan Johnson did a great job set-ting up the drive, managing all the drivers and leading us up Angeles Crest.

As usual, the focus was on fun and safety. This tour was the third GPX tour of the summer, following drives to Vasquez Rocks and Frazier Park, and it was the perfect way to end the summer driving season.

The drive began with parking lot conversation and culmi-nated with a drivers meeting where Jeff stressed safety, police presence (speed limits) and bicycles. We left in two groups, which made all the driving, parking and ordering easier.

The drive up Angeles Crest was sublime. The weather was perfect; traffic was fairly light; the bicycles were few and far

between and were staying off to the right of the road for the most part; and, there were very few motorcycles, which was surprising given the number we saw parked at Newcomb’s Ranch where we stopped for a coffee and facility break. The second run group up the hill was treated to the antics of two fools on motorcycles. They probably cut off every car in our group as they made their way past us. After departing from Newcomb’s Ranch we were treated again, this time by a five mile gravel field, as Angeles Crest is being repaved. Thank-fully, we all negotiated the gravel without too many issues, though I had a significant amount of gravel remaining inside my wheels when I got home, not to mention some tar spots on my wheels.

Once we left the gravel zone, we enjoyed a great ride over the top at 7,300 odd feet before dropping down into Wright-wood for lunch at the Grizzly Café. There we had great food and company.

Jeff was gracious enough to provide us with three routes home. As we left in small packs, I have no idea how many of us took each option, which included both twisties and freeways.

Though the official ride was over, Glenn Tessers, Mark Bil-field, David and Betty Heenan, and Tom and Eileen Scanlon, and I formed a run group of five cars and tackled the most twisty of Jeff ’s options on the way back, a path that enabled us to experience Big Pines Highway, Fort Tejon Road, Mt. Emma Road, Angeles Forest Highway, and Big Tujunga Can-yon, before hopping on the 210 and heading home.

Our drive was fantastic, even though we missed every turn. Most of the time we were the only cars on the road, and we had the opportunity to really experience long stretches of driving on short, medium, and long radius turns without anything to impede us.

As I live in West LA, my Cayman clocked 186 miles Satur-day, 130 or so of them extremely twisty. I had a great time, and I am sure all the other participants did, too. I am looking forward to the next organized outing, but I have an inkling that I will be on the backside of Angeles Crest in the near future, as it was just that much fun to drive.

DAY AWAY FROM WORKTWO DAY EVENT FEATURING NATIONAL DE INSTRUCTOR TRAINING STORY BY SKIP CARTER PHOTOS BY JIMMIE MITCHELL & PATTY REILLY

October 9 & 10 saw us at the Streets of Willow track. This Sunday/Monday event featured the PCA National DE Instructor Training on Sunday, and our typical combination Monday Drivers Education with a Zone 8 Autocross at the end of the day. The DE Instructor Training was conducted by our Zone 8 DE Chair, Scott Mann, who did his typical, fabulous job. He is a pro folks!

If you haven't been with us at one of these events, you are missing a real opportunity. We have a host hotel in Lancaster with special club pricing. Sunday afternoon we conduct a 2-hour Ground School for novices who will be driving the next day. Afterwards, large groups coordinate and head off to a couple of local restaurants, favorites from years past.

Our host hotel, the Desert Poppy Inn, serves up one of the best "comes with the room" breakfasts I've

The race track is about 20 minutes from the hotel . We get there about 6:30, unload Suesan's registration stuff, the tech inspection team sets up, drivers find places to set up for the day and, by 8:15 we are ready for the driver's meeting.

Let me back up for a second. Renting these tracks is expen-sive. We are able to keep the registration costs reasonable for one reason... Circle Porsche sponsors our performance driving events. Circle does not sponsor GPX events because we are a charity. They sponsor because marketing to the club is good business. I don't mean to preach here, but it is worth mentioning that the way Circle and our other sponsors and advertisers know that their money is well spent is for them to see and hear about our members using their services. So don't forget to mention the Grand Prix Region.

By the way, the DE Instructor Training passed twenty new instructors with the help of fifteen instructor/mentors. The Monday DE had 97 drivers, matching our biggest event ever.

Drivers are divided into four run groups based on driver experience and overall performance. Novices have their own run group and each novice has an instructor assigned to them for the day. That instructor teaches the student the basics of performance driving, which usually includes the opportunity for the student to ride along with their instructor.

THIS IS NOT RACING — We teach and practice learning how to drive our cars better; how to become better driv-ers. You learn how to really stretch your vision so that you become comfortable with other cars in close proximity. You learn just how good those Porsche brakes are. This is the safe place to develop these skills, NOT in an emergency situation on the I-405. I can't tell you how many people have thanked us because, as a result of our events, they feel so much safer and comfortable driving on the highways.

We do allow passing at these events, but there is a specific protocol. We have two designated passing zones (the two lon-gest straight sections of the track). To pass you literally need the car in front of you to know you are there and to give you a point-by before you have permission to pass.

Our safety record speaks for itself. In the fifteens years I have been doing this with GPX, I have seen damage to three cars, and none of these involved a novice. Two of these caused minimal damage to the car, but all three were driven by expe-rienced drivers who should have known better.

By the way, if you want to see photos of you and your car on track, go to GrandPrixRegion.com and see Jimmie's pics.

enjoyed. There is a lot of camaraderie going on. Good talk. Good folks.

byBruceHerrington,OrangeCoastRegionBook Reviews for PorschephilesRoute 66 Barn Find Road Trip: Lost collector cars along the Mother Road by Tom Cotter, photography by Michael Alan Rosspublished October 15, 2016 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN

It is easy to think of Route 66 as a California highway be-cause of the great open stretches that still exist in Southern California, but it really was a national highway running 2278 miles from Chicago to Malibu. This book is a travel diary appropriately dealing with the food along the way as well as the road itself and, of course, barn find cars. Lead car and conversation starter for the trip was a 1939 Woody.

Be advised that the title - Route 66 Barn Find - is somewhat misleading in that most of the old cars described were found in driveways, car ports, back yards, open fields, or other-wise exposed. Some were found as projects-in-work, but few, if any, were the hidden away, long abandoned vehicle which comes to mind as a barn find. Indeed, many of the barns in which the described finds were located, were actually salvage yards.

There is no Porsche content in Route 66, but the trip does begin from the home of a 1963 356 Coupe owner in Highland Park, Illinois, and the book does adhere to the PCA man-tra It's not the cars; it's the people that make this book such a great read. Almost half of the text is about the owners of the cars spotted from the Route 66 pavement

Route 66 Barn Find is divided into eight sections, one for each of the states through which Route 66 passed (though only 13 miles were in Kansas). Fast-paced and engross-ing, the sections have a separate named chapter for each collection (collections as distinct from museums or even displays). For example, in Moriarty, New Mexico the author found some 700 cars out in a field, some with trees growing through them – none for sale!

The chapter headings and various parts of the book have interesting Route 66 oriented artwork, like the graphics of the book's cover. Within each collection/chapter one or more cars and their restoration needs are described in detail. Some finds were vehicles that had been extensively hotrodded but not driven in decades.

The emphasis of this book is clearly on Detroit iron, no doubt reflecting the focus of the collectors rather than that of the author, but Datsuns, MGs and SAABs are reported on. While most of the collectors are not interested in selling cars from their collections, a few do sort of run businesses in old parts, but do so without show-rooms, advertising or websites. It seems that their marketing techniques are as old as their cars!.

Route 66 Barn Find is hardbound, with 192 heavyweight glossy 9-1/4 x 10-3/4 pages. The text and 402 color photos are sharp and clear. There is a comprehensive, two-page, three-column index, and a one page listing of the best of: food, places, people, and cars encountered on the trip.

By the time you read this it should be available for $35.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from https://www.quartoknows.com.

Each month at Breakfast Club we will reserve a line of prime parking spaces for selected Porsche models
