Eric Taylor Jr. and Mike Ruggiero Win LIGBT Major TitlesGarden City, NY: The much antic-
ipated Long Island Generations
Bowling Tour (LIGBT) Memorial
Day Weekend Major at Garden City
was a big success. Scratch champi-
on Eric Taylor Jr. of Brooklyn, NY
won $3,000 and the handicap
champion, Mike Ruggiero of
Smithtown, NY, took home $2,000.
Close to 400 bowlers packed the
bowling center and after 6 qualify-
ing squads, and a four round finals,
two new LIGBT Champions were
crowned.
The scratch event attracted 150
bowlers and it was obvious from
the start the lefties were at a tremen-
dous advantage. The PBA Viper
pattern was used and low scoring
was expected but the dominance by
the port side was frustrating.
Twelve out of the 18 finalists were
left-handed.
The final shootout was dominated
by young Eric Taylor who started his
final game with the first 6 strikes. The
other two finalists were trying their
best to find a shot but before they
could figure it out Eric had a 45 pin
victory. To win his first LIGBT title
Eric rolled a 243 while Senior
Champion Tim Regan of E. Northport
finished second with a 198 ($1,500)
and Adam Sher of Commack took
third ($1,000) with a 166.
The 210 and under handicap
event had another great turnout as
236 bowlers packed AMF Garden
City. A total of 29 bowlers
advanced to the finals with 6
bowlers earning byes by leading a
squad. High series for the handicap
event was thrown by Tom Piazza of
Roslyn, NY rolling a 750 series
with handicap and bonus pins. Tom
earned 2 byes in the finals for his
high series.
The final match was very close as
Mike Ruggiero and Michael
Bernard, Copaigue, NY, bowled
head to head to determine the
LIGBT Handicap Champion. Mike
Ruggiero started with a 17 pin
handicap advantage and never let
his lead slip away. In fact, the 17 pin
advantage wound up being a 16 pin
victory; 204 to 188. Mike Ruggiero
earned $2,000 for his victory while
Michael Bernard took home
$1,000.
BRENTWOOD, Calif. (June 2,
2010) – Don Sylvia of Reno,
Nev., defeated J.P. Muller of
Gervais, Ore., 209-173, to win his
third career Professional Bowlers
Association Senior Tour title in
the PBA Senior Northern
California Classic at Harvest Park
Bowl.
Sylvia, who won his last title in
the Lake County Indiana Open in
Hammond, Ind., three years ago,
earned $8,000 while Muller, a
non-titlist bowling in only his
seventh Senior Tour event, won
$4,500 as runner-up.
“I had a couple of bleak years,
personally and with injuries,”
Sylvia said, “but I’m in a good
place in my life now. I feel like
things are back on track. “I also
worked at Harvest Park Bowl for a
long time,” he continued. “I’ve
always had a great feel for this
place…..It all feels like a dream.”
Sylvia was nearly perfect in
defeating Kerry Painter of
Henderson, Nev., 289-187, in the
semifinal round while Muller elim-
inated Ross Packard of San Jose,
Calif., 235-201.
In other featured matches, Ron
Garr of Ridgedale, Mo., dis-
patched top qualifier Ron Mohr of
Eagle River, Alaska, 3-0, in their
best-of-five-game Round of 16
match. Sam Ventura of Syracuse,
N.Y., spoiled Walter Ray
Williams Jr.’s Senior Tour return
to the Northern California area
where he spent most of his earlier
career, 3-2, in the Round of 24.
Ventura’s 247-245 decision in
their fifth game ended Williams’
hopes. Painted ended Dale
Traber’s bid to defend his title in
the Round of 24, 3-2.
The PBA Senior Tour now
heads to Las Vegas, Nev., for
back-to-back major champi-
onships. Wayne Webb of
Columbus, Ohio, will try for his
third consecutive Senior U.S.
Open title June 6-11 at Suncoast
Bowling Center on the north side
of Las Vegas. The following week,
Dale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis.,
will try to defend his USBC Senior
Masters title across town at South
Point Bowling Center, June 13-18.

nament Rudy Johnson and

Last Friday’s Morris County
USBC Youth Association’s 22nd
Annual Awards Dinner was great as
usual. Seeing the young bowlers,
their families, youth association
officers, and the legend, Emma
Hendrickson in one place (Zeris Inn,
Mountain Lakes) is always gratify-
ing. And what is more inspiring than
hearing of the young people’s
accomplishments? Of particular
note was this year’s Emma P.
Hendrickson scholarship winner,
Nicole Chanin. This Sparta High
School student has a grade point
average of 3.87.She aspires to attend
Vanderbilt University and bowl with
their team. She is not only a scholar
but also enjoys the Junior State of
America, Russian Elementary
School Tutor and Peer Development
Program, Habitat for Humanity and
Key Club. By the way, she bowls,
too, with an average of 194, high
game of 278 and high series of 791.
One of her many highlights was
bowling in Holland in the People to
People US Ambassador Youth
Friendship Games, winning first
place team and first place girls’ indi-
vidual high game with 268. Nicole
was presented with a $1,000 schol-
arship.
There were too many awards to
list here, but the year-end achieve-
ments are a good representation.
Some youngsters even won the
“triple crown” which is high aver-
age, series, and game. Here they are:
Bantam Boys: Evan Weinberg, 173
average, 528 series, 254 game
(triple crown); Bantam Girls: High
Average and Series: Corinne
Clemente, 109 avg., 457 series.
High Game, Emma Thies, 162. Prep
Boys: Allen Warner, 170 average,
552 series, 253 game (triple crown);
Prep Girls: Kimberly Keller, 148
average, 540 series. Jenna
Henderson, 214 high game. Junior
Boys: Ross Whitehead, 201 aver-
age, 729 series. High game: Greg
Tack, 278. Junior Girls: Giana
Loyer, 197 average, Laura Zaugg,
727 series and Giana Loyer, 277
high game. Major Boys: High
Average, Steven Haneveld, 226.
High Series: Michael Angle, 822
with honors going to Jason
Maulbeck and Steven Haneveld for
804 series. High Game: 300 for
Matt Coombs, Eric Gentilella,
Steven Haneveld, Jon Hawxhurst,
Jason Maulbeck and Scott Wilcox.
Major girls: High average: Crystal
Keller, 205. Series: Nicole Chanin,
700 and Heather VanDyk, high
game of 280. Don’t forget these are
youth bowlers!
Did you know? There are coupons
on boxes of Jolly Time® microwave
popcorn and Tony’s Frozen Pizza,
good for one free game of open
bowling, valid until August
31.According to gobowling.com,
area centers participating are:
Boonton Lanes, Rockaway Lanes,
Sparta Lanes and Oakwood Lanes.
How’s that for a nice free game of
practice?

Paul DiSturco, Randolph, saw his
first 300 at the age of 49. He did this
in his only league at Rockaway
Lanes, the Tuesday Night Mixed
League, where he averaged 207.
This 39-year veteran of the game
got his start in junior leagues in
Union when the Four Seasons
Bowling Center existed. The story
behind his ball is a little unusual. His
teammate, John Pezzino, gave him
the ball which Paul then had Pro
Image Pro Shop redrill for him.
About five weeks into it, he scored
the perfecto in between a 203 and
223.
He has chosen to get the ring from
the US Bowling Congress. And yes,
he admits to having been nervous. “I
tried not to trip over my feet. As
long as I didn’t trip, I was okay.”
When asked if the whole building
got quiet on his last shot he said, “I
don’t know.” Talk about being in
the zone! Paul’s Team, Hafta Bowl,
won the team event in last year’s
Morris County USBC BA
Championship tournament with
Paul and his teammates Gene
Pukas, Bill Ratliff, John Pezzino
and Chuckie Briggs. DiSturco
would like to someday see an 800
series. For now he’s happy to bowl
in his one league and enter county
and state tournaments.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Joe Miller, 47, saw his sixth per-
fect game, this at Rockaway Lanes
in the Monday Night Early Birds
league. He posted 244-300-236 on a
222 average for a 780 total. You
would think he wouldn’t be nervous
on the final ball, but he admits to “a
little nervousness. My wife, Donna,
had never been present for my other
300s, so this was special. And she
was nervous!”
Joe has been bowling for 26 years.
In earlier times, Pro bowler Teata
Semiz helped Joe conquer the 7-pin,
as Joe is left-handed, at Columbia
Park Lanes in Union City. His only
bowling goal is “to continue to be
consistent.”

Idle bowling thoughts.
...I happen to live near a moun-
tain, a little one, but one that does
have plenty of wildlife. So it's no
surprise when you see an animal
here or there. But one morning I
was up early and there on my
lawn, a little lawn, pranced 9 large
wild turkeys. In less than 20 min-
utes the gathering had increased
to 19. My bowling side of my
brain quickly calculated that if I
was bowling those 19 gobblers
would have translated into 57
strikes.
...The best motto ever used in
bowling was the simple one of
bring a friend. If every bowler,
even now and then, brought along
a friend to bowl, and maybe join
or rejoin a league, it wouldn't be
long before the bowlers would
need more centers.
...Behind every star bowler is an
instructor who claims there's a
good instructor behind every star
bowler. Yet nothing is more exas-
perating than a bowler who can
instruct well, and won't, unless it
is a bowler who can't teach, and
does.
...Award programs are impor-
tant, and after a century of pro-
moting various award programs
by various groups for a wide vari-
ety of bowlers, care must be taken
when awards are eliminated. On
the outside most bowlers try not
to show emotion when they
receive awards, but inside they're
bursting with pride. Have you
ever visited any bowler's home or
business and not seen a trophy,
plaque or emblem on display?
...Back in 1970 Elvin Mesger
was the leader in sanctioned 300
games with 22. He was followed
by George Billick with 17, Dick
Weber at 16 and Lindy Faragalli
with 14. The only difference now
is that those numbers were for a
career and similar numbers cur-
rently posted are for a year.
...The determinization of a pro
or amateur remains confusing.
The only sure thing is that if you
are a member of the Professional
Bowlers Association, you are
indeed classified as a pro.
…A very palatial estate in New
Jersey has been on sale for a mere
$19.5 million. The impressive digs
have practically everything, and if
you're a bowler with bucks, the
deciding factor could be the two
lane bowling center on the proper-
ty. ...Glad to see the emphasis in
bowling is back on the sport side
of the game. Over the years,
dozens of top bowling writers
have endorsed such thinking.
...Why do we call it the "foul"
line? Why not call it the "fair"
line.
...It's good to see Doug Kent
receive recognition. He has been a
very underrated bowler for most
of his long career, except to his
opponents.
...If you tire of hearing so many
problems in the doings of athletes
who command mega-buck
salaries, take pride in the off lane
activities of top pro bowlers, most-
ly more giving than taking.
...The psychiatrist happily
informed his bowler patient that
he was now cured. "That's some
cure," said the bowler. "When I
first came here I was Walter Ray
Williams Jr. Now I'm just another
nobody bowler."

Bryan Kist Tops in Youth Travel By Vince Albrecht
Fair Lawn, NJ– There have been nine “700” sets rolled in the Stan
Niemiec Youth Travel League this past season and Bryan Kist has five
of them, including the 268-716 at Fair Lawn where he now has three.
Even with teammates Brian O’Flaherty’s 250-628, Bobby McCarthy’s
221 and noticeably improved Shannon Rossi’s effort, Bryan’s Montvale
II squad barely salvaged two points, taking the finale from Fair Lawn I,
924-915. The victors benefitted from 14-year-old Deandre Lightly’s sea-
son-best 223,218,244-685; his younger sister Keenah came through with
a huge 191 while deuces were tallied by Jenn Houseward 205 and Simon
Lezaja 201.
Driven by 14-year-old Jake Rollins’ 237, Fair Lawn II grabbed undis-
puted possession of first place, sweeping seven points from the vacancy;
Maggie Schultz and Shaun Cairns both contributed over average three-
somes for the pacesetters. Montvale I took two of three from shorthand-
ed Bowler City behind Brian Galbraith’s 238-580 and Ryan Cauwels
199-545; Ryan Perez was tops for Bowler City with 190,192.
In a matchup of powerhouses, second place Holiday Bowl II came
roaring back from an opening game setback with scratch games of
853,875 to outslug sister entry Holiday Bowl I, 2815-2768. Impressive
numbers were put up by both sides: HB II’s Kyle Landau 255-669, Tim
Scott 227-658, Amy Silvestro 220-576 and Ryan Landau, a closing 249;
HB I’s Kyle Kattine 268-671, Alex Hubelbank 225-576, Kevin Macchia
232 and Ryan Kattine 198.
North Arlington, NJ – In a befit-
tingly climactic outcome, the
Cardinals held off sizzling S.A.S.,
452-444 to snare the North
Arlington Adult-Junior Doubles
title in a playoff after dropping
back to back position encounters
to the torrid S.A.S. duo. The latter
forced the rolloff with a runaway
season high 504 effort in the regu-
lation finale as Kevin Gavron
smoked a 278 to complement his
nephew Nick’s 226. Undaunted,
the Redbirds’ youth average leader
Will Blanco was unflappable in
the playoff, hammering 233 by
converting a crucial tenth frame
spare for the championship.
Team Awesome finished in third
place despite a 5-2 setback to
Juicy and 12-year-old Chris
McBride’s over average outing.
The Mighty Chipmunks escaped
the cellar, taking all seven points
from the Ghosts while the A Team
rode 12-year-old Nikki Arrigo’s
