ARLINGTON, Texas - The United States Bowling

Congress Open Championships is the can't-miss event

for tens of thousands of bowlers each year, and there's

still time to be a part of the historic 2011 tournament.

The entry deadline has been extended to Jan. 15, so

teams not yet entered still have a chance to join the

60,000 bowlers who already have their sights set on a

share of the $5 million prize fund.

The upcoming event will begin its 122-day run March

4 and is scheduled to conclude July 3. Bowlers from all

50 states and several foreign countries will converge on

the one-of-a-kind, 78-lane National Bowling Stadium in

Reno, Nev., which has been the site of many memorable

    tournament moments.

The 2011 event marks the tournament's record 10th tripto Reno and seventh visit to the National Bowling

Stadium. It also will be the first time an event has been

held in the same city in back-to-back years. The 2010

tournament drew 14,189 teams to "The Biggest Little

    City in the World."

For bowlers looking for extra opportunities to cash in

on the championship lanes, there's always a variety of

side events and jackpots available on-site, including tra-

ditional brackets, strike jackpots and side pots.

A few enhancements to the brackets menu in 2011

include the availability of $5 brackets and Classified

Cash-O-Matic brackets during doubles and singles,

while three new products give more bowlers a chance to

    win:

Off-the-Sheet Jackpot Bowlers who go "off the sheet"

and finish a game with at least five strikes (frames eight-

    12) will split the accumulated jackpot at the end of the

tournament. For $20, you will have nine opportunities to

cash in on this exciting new product.

Senior Side Event This is just for senior bowlers, age50 and older (on day of competition). For a $25 entry fee

paid at the brackets window, bowlers will be entered into

two special senior-only prize funds (singles and all-

events). Both categories will feature a 1:4.5 cash ratio.

Singles and all-events totals from the main tournament

will be used for this product.

Ultimate Mulligan Designed for super seniors (bowlers

age 60 and older the day they compete), the Ultimate

Mulligan requires entrants to compile their three highest

games of the 2011 tournament to arrive at their Ultimate

Mulligan series score. Then, they will see how their

three-game set holds up for the duration of the tourna-

ment. The Ultimate Mulligan features a prize-fund-style

payout with a cash ratio of 1:4.5. The entry fee is $20.

There are still prime spots available for 2011. For more

information, visit BOWL.com/openchamp or call the

tournament entries department at 800-514-2695.There also are plenty of spots available for bowlers

interested in competing in the 2011 USBC Women's

Championships in Syracuse, N.Y. More than 6,000teams are expected to compete in the event, which

begins April 7 and runs until July 3. The deadline for

the Women's Championships is Jan. 15, 2011. For

more information and available times, visit

Invitational FieldHip-hop, NFL, NBA stars team up with

PBA champions for Super Bowl Sunday telecast

By Bill Vint |PBA Media Relations

NEW ORLEANS, La. Celebrity A-listers competed on the lanes with

professional bowlers for charity last week. Hip-hop giants Lil Wayne and

Nelly, along with New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush joined

five PBA champions and host Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets for

the third annual Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational at Riverboat Lanes

on the New Orleans Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base. The pro/celebrity doubles event, which supports Pauls charitable CP3

Foundation, will air on ESPN on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. ET,

for the third straight year as part of the PBAs TV schedule.

PBA Tour stars participating were PBA Hall of Famers Pete Weber and

Norm Duke, former PBA Rookies of the Year Jason Belmonte and Rhino

Page, and former PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott.

The standing-room-only crowd consisted of personnel from all four

branches of the military and their families from the Naval Air Station

    Joint Reserve Base.

The Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational has grown to be one of our

most anticipated events every year, said PBA Deputy Commissioner

Tom Clark. Chris and his superstar friends love bowling with our stars

and the PBA is proud to partner with the Paul family on behalf of the CP3

Foundation, which continues to brighten kids lives.

In the doubles competition, Weber paired with fellow St. Louis native

Nelly, Duke teamed up with Lil Wayne, and Malott and Bush were an

imposing pairing. Belmonte and Paul partnered in an effort to defendtheir title. The teams competed in a stepladder finals for the unique Chris

Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational trophy. Page took on the four celebrities

in a new Super Clash shootout to kick off the festivities.

NBA superstar LeBron James and the PBAs Jason Couch teamed up to

win the inaugural Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational in 2008. Other

celebrities who have competed in the events history include Dwyane

Wade, Kevin Durant, Ludacris, Lamar Woodley, Jack Del Rio and Hines

    Ward.

Paul founded his CP3 Foundation in 2005 as a tribute to his late grand-

father and the Winston-Salem, N.C., community where he grew up and

starred at Wake Forest. The foundation has provided funding for activities

ranging from a scholarship program to food drives to recreational support

programs for underprivileged children in both Winston-Salem and New

    Orleans.

Paul, an avid bowler who frequently refers to bowling as his second-

favorite sport, is on his way to another NBA All-Star season. Both Lil

Wayne and Nelly are Grammy-award winning artists with new recordings

currently at the top of the Billboard charts. Former USC star Bush helped

the Saints win their first Super Bowl title earlier in 2010.

What better way to get ready for the big game on Super Bowl Sunday

than watch this spectacular PBA event earlier in the day on ESPN? Clark

said. Not only are the bowlers and celebrities great personalities, they

share a love of the sport of bowling and competition at the highest level.

    ARLINGTON, Texas - Members

    of United States Bowling

    Congress Sport Bowling leagues

    mate Team USA Experience

    Fantasy Camp.

Six winners will be invited to

    visit the International Bowling

    Campus in Arlington, Texas,

where they will train with Team

    USA coaches at the International

    Training and Research Center

and then take on six members ofTeam USA in a special competi-

    tion broadcast live on

    BOWL.com.

    "This is the ultimate opportuni-

ty for our Sport Bowling mem-

bers to learn from the sport's best

coaches and get to meet members

    of Team USA," USBC Managing

    Director of Marketing and

    Membership Kevin Terry said.

    "This program also provides

    even more value to Sport

    Bowling membership."

    To be eligible, USBC Sport

    Bowling members simply need to

shoot a 200 game or higher in a

USBC-certified Sport Bowlingleague between Jan. 1 and Dec.

31, 2011 and then fill out the

    entry form on BOWL.com.

    Two semifinalists will be

selected on the first day of each

    month beginning Feb. 1. Starting

    March 15 and continuing every

other month, the four most recent

semifinalists will face off in an

    online poll on BOWL.com. For

    example, two semifinalists will

be selected in January and two

    more in February. Those four

will face off in the online poll

starting March 15. After 14 days

of voting, the top vote-getter will

win a trip to the Fantasy Camp to

    take advantage of the technology

    available at the ITRC.

The ITRC is home to some of

    the most innovative and cutting-

    edge coaching technologies

    available in the bowling industry

    today, including high-speed

    video cameras, motion-capture

    devices, foot-pressure sensors

    and goggles enhanced with cam-

eras to show exactly where a

    player is looking during the

approach and delivery. A DVRsystem also is in place and can

record any video feed to let a

bowler see what they did on their

last shot as soon as they step off

    the lane.

    Other technology includes

    Computer-Aided Tracking

    System, known as C.A.T.S.

which consists of a series of sen-

sors placed along the lane that

    measure aspects of a bowler's

game such as ball speed, accura-

    cy, launch angle, and break-point

    control. CA.T.S. is combined

    with BowlersMAP, which breaks

down video of the players, to

give the athletes a real-time lookat their games.

    A United States Olympic

    Committee-recognized training

center, the ITRC is a joint ven-

ture of USBC and the Bowling

    Proprietors' Association of

America. It is the most innova-

    tive and advanced training,

    research and testing facility in

the sport of bowling with 14

lanes for training and six for

    research and testing.

    John Archibald

    ARLINGTON, Texas John

    Archibald of Webster Groves, Ill.,

    a United States Bowling Congress

Hall of Fame member, died Jan. 3.He was 85.

    The veteran bowling writer

    worked for more than four

decades for the St. Louis Post-

    Dispatch. After his retirement in

1990, he continued to write bowl-

ing columns until 1993. He was

inducted into the USBC Hall of

    Fame in 1996 for Meritorious

    Service.

    Before his induction, Archibald

discussed how he tried to find the

most human item to start his stories.

I want to hook the reader,

whether a bowler or not, and min-

imize the lingo and stats, he said.

They turn off most people. Ialways try to remember the longer

I write, the more readers I lose.

He began working for the Post-

    Dispatch as a sportswriter after

    graduating from the University of

    Missouri in 1949. After covering

sports for 20 years, he became the

    newspapers first television critic

in 1971, and then turned to feature

    writing in 1977.

But the one constant during his

career was his coverage of bowl-

ing. After he moved from the sports

    department, he continued to write

    bowling columns for the section.

    He covered major tournaments

    such as the Bowling Proprietors

    Association of America All-Star

    events, the World Invitational,

    USBC Masters and the Firestone

    Tournament of Champions.

For 25 years he wrote the yearly

    bowling summary for

    Encyclopedia Britannicas Book

of the Year. He also wrote a book,

    Bowling for Boys and Girls,

    which was published in 1963.

During his career, he won more

    than 50 bowling writing awards,

    including six PBA writing compe-

    tition awards. He was inducted

into the PBA Hall of Fame for

    Meritorious Service in 1989.

    Archibald also served as president

of the Bowling WritersAssociation of America in 1970

and is a member of the Greater St.

    Louis Bowling Association Hall

    of Fame.

Bowling For Soup To Perform atPBA Tournament of Champions

Grammy-nominated American rock/punk band Bowling For Soup will

perform its newest song Saturday Night during the ESPN on ABC

telecast of the $1 million Professional Bowlers Association Tournament

of Champions finals Saturday, Jan. 22 at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas.

Bowling For Soup will release its 11th studio album on the Razor &

Tie labelFishin For Woos on May 3.

BFS lead singer Jaret Riddick attended the 2010 PBA Tournament of

Champions, witnessing the historic victory by Kelly Kulick from the

    front row.

As you can imagine, weve done our share of bowling alley appear-

ances, said Reddick. None have been as exciting for me as attending

last years Tournament of Champions as a fan. It was amazing to watch

history being made when Chris (Barnes) took on Kelly Kulick in the

championship match and to witness the first woman ever winning a

    major PBA event.

When the PBA invited us to perform this year, we jumped at the chance

and are genuinely excited to participate in this major sports event.
