LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Chris Barnes of Double Oak,

Texas, exorcised his television demons upsetting top

qualifier Bill O’Neill of Southampton, Pa., 267-237,

to win the Professional Bowlers Association World

Championship at South Point Bowling Center and

become the sixth player in PBA history to complete

the sport’s Triple Crown.

Along with his 13th career title, the 40-year-old

Barnes won a $50,000 first prize. He previously had

Barnes, the No. 4 qualifier, came into the PBA

World Championship with a 7-14 record on television

in major championships, but he won four consecutive

matches for the title to improve his record to 11-14.

He defeated Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree, Ariz., in

Saturday night’s elimination round, 243-172, to reach

Sunday’s finals where he eliminated Finland’s Osku

Palermaa, 246-176, and Sean Rash of Montgomery,

Ill., 237-161, for the chance to meet O’Neill for the

title.

In the title match, Barnes started with six strikes to

refused to back down, finishing with a string of four

strikes to force Barnes to mark in the 10th frame.

Barnes’ strike on his first shot in the clinched the title.

“I feel bad for Bill,” Barnes said. “He was the best

bowler in the PBA World Series to get here, but I’ve

been in his shoes a few times and I’m not going to

give the trophy back.

“There are a lot of guys who have won the PBA

World Championship, but it’s a short and distin-

guished list of guys who have won the Triple Crown,”

he added. “Right after I won, Billy Hardwick called

my wife and told her to welcome me to the club.”

“I’m not unhappy with my performance,” O’Neill

said. “I threw all but one shot on line. When I needed

shots to make Chris show up in 10th, they were all

good. That’s something I’ve struggled with out here. I

ENTRY DEADLINES EXTENDED

FOR 2011 USBC WOMEN'S AND

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

ARLINGTON, Texas - The entry deadline for the 2011 United

States Bowling Congress Women's Championships has been extend-

ed to March 1, while USBC Open Championships competitors now

will have until March 4 to submit their entries.

The 2011 Open Championships will be the first to kick off this

year as it begins its 122-day run March 4. Bowlers from all 50 states

and several foreign countries will converge on the one-of-a-kind, 78-

lane National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., before the tourna-

ment concludes on July 3.

This year, the Women's Championships will return to New York

state for the first time since 1996 and settle into Syracuse's Oncenter

Complex, where 48 specially-constructed lanes and custom-built,

state-of-the-art scoreboards will await more than 30,000 bowlers.

The event gets underway April 7 and will run for 88 days, also con-

cluding on July 3.

There are still prime spots available for 2011. For more informa-

tion, visit BOWL.com/tournaments or call the tournament entries

department at 800-514-2695.

Nicholas Westergaard, 16, saw his first 300, competing in the junior

league at Rockaway Lanes. He rolled 203-185-300 and bested his pre-

vious high game of 277. The Morris Knolls student used a Storm Reign

fitted by Chip Vincent at the Pro Image Pro Shop at Rockaway Lanes.

His average is 178.

Although he admits to being nervous on his final shot he said, “I just

kept focusing and made sure I hit my mark.” Nicholas enjoys two

leagues, both at Rockaway Lanes. He credits his father, Jim, the

league’s coach and the people of Pro Image with helping his game. His

next goal is to shoot an 800 series. To date his high is 733. Nicholas

resides in Rockaway.

Also at Rockaway Lanes, Paul Manozzi, Jr. won the recent US Open

Win-a-Spot. But he came too close to finishing second. “I was ahead by

forty-one (pins) going into the last game (they bowled eight games). I

wasn’t nervous until that last game. I made it closer than it should have

been. I guess it was a case of nerves. I missed in the eighth and ninth

frames.” He rolled 173 to second-place finisher Noel Vega’s 211, but

held onto a three-pin victory. This was Manozzi’s second try at the win-

a-spot. “I always wanted to bowl in the US Open. I bowled on that pat-

tern a couple of times.”

“The neatest thing is that I won the spot on what would have been my

late grandmother’s birthday. And I live in her house now.”

What are his expectations for the US Open, one of the longest and

most difficult formats for any bowler? “To make the first cut on

Friday,” he said. “You always want to average 200. I’ll just try to stay

out of the way (of the professional bowlers there) and do my own thing.

I do better when I stay to myself. I have bowled in a regional tourna-

ment before, so I somewhat understand what goes on. We’ll see what

happens.”

And now for the kicker: Manozzi rolls a full roller. Shades of Billy

Hardwick in the 60s. But maybe that’s what it will take to conquer the

US Open and its most challenging pattern.

For our third star this week, I don’t know if this is a county record,

but here is an amazing achievement. Pete “Cappy” Caporaso rolled a

279 triplicate, this in the CMIL League at Plaza Lanes. His total series

was a big 837. Pete, 56, knew he needed a strike at the end of the third

game and easily got it. He bested his former high sanctioned series of

834. This Hall of Famer’s achievements include 32 games of 300,

seven series of 800 or more, and he has converted the “Big Four” (4-6-

7-10). About the only thing left is to cover the 7-10 split.

Linda Klusick, Hopatcong, NJ, realized a long-term goal with her first

700 series, a 743, in the Kings and Queens League at Circle Lanes.

“My previous high sanctioned series was a 697 bowled in 1977 with

my dad (Hall of Famer and veteran bowler John Klusick) in the Trio

Classic. He was so sorry I didn’t get my 700 then, so I said, ‘Don’t

worry; I’ll get it.’ So 33 years later he was watching me and was there

for my first two games. But he didn’t want to make me nervous. When

I started the third game with a spare, he left, and after 236 and 257 I

posted 250. Everybody was happy I bowled that 700.

NOTICEIndiana Bowler

Rolls 900 SeriesARLINGTON, Texas – Bob

Kammer Jr. of Crown Point, Ind.,

rolled a perfect 900 series

Saturday night. The series is still

pending formal approval by the

United States Bowling Congress.

Kammer, who would be the 18th

bowler in history to roll a USBC-

approved 900 series, tossed 36

consecutive strikes in the

Saturday Invitational League at

Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville,

Ind. He would be the first bowler

from the state of Indiana to

record a certified 900 series.

“It was unbelievable, and I was

nervous,” said Kammer, a 41-year-

old right-hander. “It’s not some-

thing that happens every day.”

Competing on lanes one and

two, Kammer said the rest of the

league stopped play to watch him

after the seventh frame of his

third game.

“I was just thinking, please

carry,” Kammer said in describ-

ing his final strike. “I was taking

deep breaths and trying to get the

ball clean off my hand.”

Kammer works for Ford Motor

Company and may be a local

celebrity when he returns to

work.

“My phone has been blowing up,”

Kammer said. “I am having my 15

minutes of fame and it’s fun.”

Kammer’s 900 series would be

the 19th USBC-approved in his-

tory. The first USBC-approved

900 occurred Feb. 2, 1997 when

Jeremy Sonnenfeld rolled three

consecutive perfect games in

Lincoln, Neb. There has never

been a 900 on Sport Bowling lane

conditions.
