Held at the site of the CAUSBC convention in Foster City, the writers had a great turnout at their meeting welcoming numerous men. In addition to renewals the writers picked up 11 new members! It was a special pleasure when new member Troy Shane of Camarillo – just back from Iraq – was the winner of our new member packet presented at the CAUSBC meeting. CBW is always looking for members and annual dues are only $15.00.

The weekend was highlighted by ESPN Color Analyst and PBA Tour and Storm Staff Player Randy Peder-sen of Clermont, Florida as our 10th Anniversary luncheon speaker. Jackie Wyckoff chaired the luncheon enjoyed by 91 guests. All applauded special gifts from CBW and the many outstanding prizes donated by sponsors Storm, National Bowling Stadium and Circus Circus. The luncheon theme followed the ten-year symbol “tin” including the program and menu and new shirts worn by the board with a special 10th Anniversary logo.

The California Bowling Writers will wrap up a year of successes having increased membership to a high of 117 and raising $6800 for phone cards for the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Numer-ous Recognition Certificates were sent to journalists throughout the state who wrote positive articles on bowling. The Media Award went to Keith Pate from KGET Channel 17 in Bakersfield and Mary Lynly of Roseville was the recipi-ent of both the Golden Quill Award (for a story on a theme presented annually) and the CBW Profile Award (for a profile on an individual.)

The new theme for the Golden Quill Award should motivate people to write – it is “The Changing Face of Bowling.” Has bowling changed in your area? Can you compare differences and perhaps give some input on how the new parent organization has changed your local or the state. A good brain storming should give you some ideas.

The Product Fair booth was a hit with our usual BIG DICE ROLL. We had outstanding gifts and I am sure the winners were delighted. Members who renewed and new members received a la-ser light with California Bowling Writers on it and a great ten-year calendar plus a CBW history booklet, both made by our talented secretary Donna Dillard.

Future plans for CBW include participating in the Nor-Cal Trade Show in Reno in October and the group will finalize the CWBA History Display at the National Bowling Stadium. The board also approved pursuing our phone card efforts for 2009 again.

We invite you to browse our website www.calbowlingwriters.org where all of our InfoLink newsletters are archived, news is current and there are bios on all officers and directors.

California Bowling Writers, formed in 1998, is open to all California bowling journalists, promoters and supporters of the sport of bowling. The purpose of the organization is to encourage and educate both members and non-members in com-munication through print, promotion and use of electronic media. CBW will recognize and reward those who create media awareness by providing outstand-ing bowling photography and journal-istic excellence. For more information visit: www.calbowlingwriters.org

C H AT S W O R T H — ABTA Regular Vic Hilvano, was the best. He won in our long awaited return to popu-lar Rocket Lanes. Winning our latest event from the top seeded position in a strange and unusual finish down-ing the Hot Shooting Chris Kelly in the title game to take home a top prize of $2,200 to Cypress.

Our return to Rocket was just great, we had a good 155 entrants, and had 48 bowlers advance to the semifinals.

Leading the Semis was Super ABTA supporter Vic Hilvano with his fine +162.He would sit out and be able to bowl the title game.

Behind him was Dom La Guardia at +147. Dom would sit out and bowl for the title. Dom received a first round bye in the single elims and enter in round two.

It took a +87 for the men and +72 for the ladies to make the Sweet 16 Single Elim Finals.

The Bowlers took to the lanes. The first round single elims losing were: Sophia

Qualify Saturday 12:00-1:00-2:30-4:00-& 6:00PM Semis 7:45 PMKim Sy, Rina Cordero, Aiza Lacanlale, Arly Teh, Don Sowinski, Danny Guevarra, and Charlie Medina they got checks of $100 for 10-16th places.

In round two being elimi-nated were: Ramiro Pantoja, Roland Escarces, Robert Jones, and Dom La Guardia, and they cashed in 6-9th places and $110 each.

Round three had Ray-mond Sanchez eliminate Jason Sandford, and Chris Kelly got to Alejandro Vela.

Alex, Jason and Steve were 4th and 5th with fine bowling and $120 each.

Chris and Ray to meet for the right to bowl Hilvano for the title.

In this high scoring game Chris had some big strikes and Raymond couldn’t carry. Chris was on to the title game with Ray in his ABTA Debut with very fine bowl-ing.

The title game was set and the horses were paid! Chris returned $38 in the horse bets for everyone who had him at $5.00 per entry.

The title game was on, and Vic led off with a spare.Chris with a strike and both bowlers were struggling.

Vic led in the 5th 66-57 Vic then doubled and fin-ished 191/208. Chris would need seven on the first ball for the win as he had a dou-ble but lost the shot and got a four count.

He then needed to pick it up for the win and a tough spare it was. He missed it and the final score with handicap was Vic 208, Chris 205 and Vic’s second title is in the books!

What a finish although a bit disheartening for Chris! Vic won his second title and folks you cannot find a nicer man!

To lock it up in a 195/205-162-189 margin and a title very well deserved.

Nice bowling by Chris Kelly, a fine guy to say the least if not less. He had been in a bit of a slump beofre hit-ting Rocket Lanes! He one of the good guys for sure!

Newcomers Ray Sanchez and Jason Sandford did well

in 3rd, and 4th place and could have won at Rocket.

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Chris Kelly for the men +245, and Allison Cornett led the gals at +184. They both get paid entries.

Rodney Rojas was las-tup in the 3-6-9, but missed on shot 3. We will go for $1,200 this week at Bowl-O-Drome!

The Match Game was Un-Matched at 209 drawn by Hilvano. We definitely have a Max Match Game and it will be worth $3,500 this Saturday at Bowl ODrome.

The balance going to a

reserve pot!Match Series worth $260

was also Un-Matched at 710 and wit the carry over we will estimate a $600 Match Series this week, and for only $2.00 to enter.

Flowers for the Living Award

Gurnee, Ill. - Carmen Salvino has gotten to a stage in life where there are few surprises. However, he was caughtcompletely unaware during the June 5 Draft Party in conjunction with the PBA Team Shootout at Six Flags GreatAmerica when he was announced as the winner of the 48th Sam Levine Flowers for the Living Award.

It didn’t take long for Salvino to gather himself and his thoughts. Once at the podium, he confessed his surprise andaccepted the award with grace. He then proceeded to pay even bigger tributes to the Professional BowlersAssociation - who helped elevate his status to the point where he could receive such an award - and the bowlersin attendance, the biggest stars in today’s game, who gave him a standing ovation when his name was announcedas the winner.

Salvino was in attendance because he was one of the coaches for the Team Shootout, where he and his fellowcoaches - Mark Roth and Brian Voss - each drafted their 6-player teams for the event, which was co-sponsoredby the U.S. Bowling Congress.

The award is unusual in that it recognizes someone in bowling who is admired, respected and, indeed, loved. Inrecent years, Salvino has achieved that stature as being one of bowling’s most effective “ambassadors,” a recognitionhe has used to not only promote the sport he loves, but to gracefully point out some of its problem areas. In the lastyear, he was officially recognized in that role by being appointed a USBC Ambassador.

There were also a lifetime of on-the-lanes achievements, highlighted by his 17 PBA crowns - including the NationalChampionship - which culminated in his enshrinement in the PBA and USBC Halls of Fame. Also, Bowling magazinerecently named him one of the 20 Greatest Bowlers of the 20th Century.

What sets Salvino apart is his ability to balance a sparkling sense of humor with timely penchant to speak his mindon subjects that he felt needed the “light of truth.” Flowers presenter Jim Dressel found out about that years agowhen Salvino was recognized as an All-American by Bowlers Journal International. Salvino accepted the award, then gently castigated the magazine for not recognizing his All-American stature years earlier. As Dressel then toldthe audience after Salvino returned the microphone, “I told you he always says what’s on his mind.”

The Sam Levine Flowers for the Living Award has a tradition of being sprung as a surprise on the recipient, andhonorees are determined by a special committee of prominent bowling writers. It was created in 1961 by the lateCleveland Kegler Publisher Sam Levine, and is based on a poem by former Ohio Associated Press Editor FritzHowell. In the poem, Howell suggested that deserving individuals be honored while they were “still alive to smellthe flowers.”

Flowers for the Living

by Fritz Howell

It seems that when a fellow dies, no matter what he’s been,A saintly chap or one whose life was darkly steeped in sin -That folks forget the bitter words they spoke but yesterdayAnd seem to find a multitude of pretty things to say.

And maybe when I go to rest, someone will bring to lightSome kindly word or goodly act, long buried out of sight,But if it’s all the same to you, just give to me instead,The bouquets while I’m living, and the knocking when I’m dead.

Don’t save your kisses to imprint upon my noble brow,While countless maledictions are hurled upon me now.Just say a kindly word to me, as I mourn here alone,And don’t save all your eulogy to carve upon a stone.

What do I care if, when I’m gone, the whole newspaper worldGives me a glowing writeup and the nation’s flags are furled? Why, it won’t flatter me a bit, no matter what is said,So kindly throw your flowers now, and knock me when I’m dead.

It may be fine, when one is gone, to have folks talk so,And have the flowers come in loads from all the guys you know.It must be nice to have these things for those you leave behindBut, so far as I’m concerned, I really will not mind.

I’m quite alive and well today, and while I linger here,Give me a helping hand at times, give me a word of cheer.Let’s change the game a bit, just sorta swab the decks,For I will be no judge of flowers, when I cash in my checks.

Modified Qualifying and Finals format for State Queens and Masters Event!

The 2008 California State Queens and Masters events have undergone major changes for the better. For both events, bowlers have two opportunities to qualify: 1) using their Open or Women’s Championships All-event scores OR 2) qualify in the Last Chance squad the same weekend of the finals. The Queens Tournament will be held August 16-17 at West Lane Bowl in Stockton and the Masters will be held Sep-tember 5-7 at Forest Lanes in Lake Forest. The Last Chance squad allows bowlers to par-ticipate without having to par-ticipate in the current Open or Women’s Championship event. This major change will allow more bowlers the opportunity to participate and should help to increase the prize fund tre-mendously!

$4,000 estimated in prize money (based on 75 bowl-ers) for the Queens event: 32 qualifiers will compete in Double Elimination (Best 2 of 3) format. The qualifiers will consist of the top 13 finishers overall from the 2008 Women’s Championships All-Events, the past two Queens Champions,

the top All-Events finisher from 2008 Women’s Championships and the top 16 finishers from Last Chance qualifying squad on Aug. 16.

$12,000 estimated in prize money (based on 200 bowl-ers) for the Masters event: 64 qualifiers will compete in Double Elimination (Best 2 of 3) format.

The qualifiers will consist of the top 29 finishers from the Open Championships All-Events, the past two Masters Champions, the 2008 Open State Championships Optional Scratch All-Events Champion and the top 32 finishers from Last Chance qualifying squad on Sept. 5.

Please be sure to get your entry at the check-in table at the championship events, find one at your local center or download the entry online at www.CalUSBC.com.

You can read in more detail the rules of the tournament. For any questions or concerns, please contact Matt Cormack at [email protected] or (818) 222-2663. Thank you for your support to these events and to the bowlers of California!

Forest Lanes 6 Gamer Won

by BerkelLAKE FOREST—Pat

Berkel and Greg Neuer were neck and neck in the final game with Neuer ahead by only one pin. From the sixth frame on Pat Berkel kept creeping ahead pin by pin finally capturing first place and top cash.

Pat dedicated his win in memory of Frank Kietz who helped him with his game and personal life choices.

Sidepots were captured by Greg Neuer (269-237-237) Wayne Hohemstein (239-255) and Jennifer Wayne (277).

Blocks went to Greg Neuer and Jennifer Wayne.

Until the California State Tournament is over, the 6 gam-er dates “will be announced”. So watch the front page for the next tournament.

Can You Top This.... Joel Ricketts Bowls Five 299 Games In One Season!

by Frank WeilerHEMET—Citrus Belt star bowler Joel Ricketts averaged

233 last season and has bowled thirteen certified/sanctioned 300 games, including two as a PBA regional bowler. However, none of these accomplishments are what he remembers most about his recent experiences on the lanes. So what accomplishment was the highlight of Joel’s last season?

In his mind, the highlight of last season was his bowling five certified 299 games. All of these honor scores were rolled at Hemet Lanes, where he manages the Pins and Needles Pro Shop. At least two of the 299s should have been perfectos, with the twelfth shots hitting the pocket and leaving “stone” eight pins. However, as all bowlers know, when a round ball hits ten oval pins only GOD can predict with 100% certainty what will happen.

While Joel has bowled several 800s, the high series resulting from these 299 games was a 785.

My research to date, as historian of the Citrus Belt Association, indicates that five 299 games in one season is a Citrus Belt record. Do you know of anyone in the Citrus Belt who has topped Joel’s accomplishment? Let me know at [email protected].

Thanks Bowling News for supporting Citrus Belt bowlers.

STUDIO CITY — A tie? Coffee mug? Ratchet set? Since 1910, children far and wide have tried to come up with the perfect father’s day gift. Look no more! Nothing says ‘I love you Dad’ better than a game of bowling. And what better place to bring good ole Dad than Pinz. We at Pinz address all fathers out there and wish them all a very Happy Father’s Day!

PINZ ADULTS You would think everyone was a father on our leagues with the battle cry, “Who’s your Daddy? Who’s your Daddy?” that’s heard echoing throughout Pinz after a good game. And if that question was raised this past week the following people all deserve a tie as these scores can attest to: Tavern Guild: Mark Peavey 245/676, Ed Dusseau 234/675, Curt Zellers 233/651, Bob Thomas 232/629, David Quam 622, Rick Kondo 226. Twilighters: Tony Deraud 236/692, Dane Price 278/685, Michael Hoit 245/621, Laurie Faso 234/629, Jim Moore 619, Deon Martin 245. S.C.B.L.: Jim Foltyn 298/688, Scott Spande 685, Larry Day 266/681, Brian Patterson 266/660, Jeff Dowling 288/644, Neil In-man 254.

PINZ JUNIORS “A Dad is a person who is loving and kind, and often he knows what you have on your mind. Though he needs to shave his Van-dyke beard, he is there to cheer you on when you bowl a strike and realizes your skills are just plain sick.” Sweetness admits he can’t rhyme, but if you don’t think these scores are amazing, then it’s a crime! Adult Junior: Brad Lander 279/664, Treven Goldsmith 227/659, Adam Lander 224/608, Jamie Spector 220/579, Nikolai Berk 209/579. Senior Scratch: Nikolai Berk 243/891, Nathan Honda 239/856, Scott Englehart 222/835, Ethan Bensinger 225/749, Natalie Kato 725, Treven Goldsmith 217. Senior Galaxies: Billy Lander 172/447, Rachel Acacio 149/415, Daniel Cohen 148/377, Noah Lander 363, Stirling McCulloch 166, Ty Paiali 140/330. Junior Stars: Nicole Martinez 126/340, Nicholas Martinez 85/190.

PINZ SENIORS/LADIES We don’t get it! We’re sure many of our seniors on the lanes are parents and maybe dare I say grandparents but these seniors can bowl better than most young whippersnappers! Our hats go out to all our senior fathers and even for those who are not for they lead by example and have taught our staff so much and as these scores show, is there any wonder why we admire them so? Happy Timers: Gary Olsen 204/526, Bob Garrick 523, Cynthia Burkenheim 181/435, Joyce Rabinowitz 157/432, Ken Burkenheim 192. Breakfast Club: Myrna Schiffman 197/527, Charlene Gaffney 188/510, Nancy Sherwood 160/441, Elaine Vanoff 436, Victoria Rastocky 171/433, Roz Levitt 160. Coffee & Donuts: Charlene Gaffney 497, Hildegard Miller 188. Joslyn Seniors: Bob Garrick 214/606, Sol Stein 208/563, Teri Bonato 171/475, Kathy George 161/438. Senior Social: Gary Olsen 221/605, Art Michener 199/500, Joel Margolis 184/467, Charlene Gaffney 182/449, Bob Garrick 159/426. Bowler of the Week: Do we have a better bowler than Nikolai Berk? No, actually we don’t. He not only was the youngest Pinz bowler to register a 300 game, also bowls with the best partner, Nice D. Check out Team 18 to see their scores. Barbara Lee congratu-lated him with a cake and a whole bunch of other souvenirs. Sweetness Quote of the Week: “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.” - Mark Twain

DOWNEY — The High Rolling Brunswick League at Del Rio Lanes continued their end of season bracket style rolloff Monday night. Two of the six qualifying teams took to the lanes on the “House Condition” at 7:30 P.M. “Threadworks” (Roman Torres-Mike Cammarata-Jack Price-Greg Neuer) bowled two team games, 864 and 921 with great individual efforts. Torres 255/246, Cammarata 196/224, Price 201/172 and Neuer 212/279. Tri-Star Vending (David Yamauchi 246/247, Larry Campbell 218/216, Mike Darby 278/255, Jon Brandon 226/227) put together team sets of 968 and 945. They took a break (counted their strikes and a couple of lucky hits), then geared up for a match against J.P.A. Windows. The J.P.A. guys (Ramiro Garcia 246/159, Johony Polony 179/181, Arnold Cheesman 189/224 and Herbert Jones 180/194) were paired up on a “Sport” condition which brought the scores down considerably and called for perfect spare making. Tri-Star Vending was very consistent (that means they didn’t get a break!) building team games of 704 and 728. J.P.A.’s 794/768. (David Yamauchi 173/186, Larry Campbell 181/192, Mike Darby 190/164, Jon Brandon 160/186). Next Monday, June 16, the 7:30 P.M. Match-up will be be-tween J.P.A. and 5-Star Appaisal (Jeff Carr-John Mongillo-Danny Ontideros-Dave Bartlett). A different condition will be laid out on the competition lanes (it’s been declared to all bowlers). Picking the right equipment could make the difference between winning and losing. Right? Or Wrong? Interested bowlers are welcome to come and watch the action at Del Rio Lanes Monday night.

in the national contest for the best state association website. De-signer Director Lynn Matsubara would be at the USBC Annual Meeting in Kansas City to receive the award.

The meeting adjourned at 12:30 pm to allow board mem-bers to either work the Product Fair or attend the Workshop, where moderator Bob Shulman from USBC addressed all the changes taking place at headquar-ters,. This was followed by a Q & A session from an attendance that nearly filled the entire room.

Sunday’s Annual Meeting was opened by President Hoffmann at 9:00 AM and the presentation of the flags. followed by the intro-duction of each CAUSBC Board Member as they marched in.

The morning session gave at-tention to the reports of Officers, Directors, CAUSBC Commit-tees, and those of the California Youth Committee. The proposed change to the CAUSBC By-Laws, Article VII-Meetings, dealing with submitting creden-tials of delegates to the Annual Meeting was approved by the voting delegates.

CAUSBC 2008 Stars of To-morrow and $l,000 Scholarship Winners, Samantha Jimenez of Rowland Heights and Douglas Frisbie of Concord were intro-duced.

Inducted into our 2008 Hall of Fame was Sharon Aronson, of Modesto for Superior Per-formance and George Glavas of Sacramento for Meritorious Service.

The meeting recessed for lunch and 124 delegates and guests chose to attend our Annual Luncheon and enjoy a delicious full course menu.

The afternoon session re-convened on schedule with the New Business being the Election of CAUSBC Board Members and those candidates for the California Youth Committee All CAUSBC encumbants and those nominated from the floor were elected by acclamation. Although the election process of CYC is rather complicated, the diligent work of the Nominating Committee and Tellers collecting and counting the ballots, brought the vote back much more quickly this year. The president took the opportunity during the bal-lot counting process to call for reports from the “600”, “500” and “15-Year” Clubs.

With no further business President Hoffmann called for the Retirement of the Flags af-terwhich, he called the meeting adjourned at 3:30 pm.

Don’t forget to check out our National Award Winning Website calusbc.com designed and maintained by our Web-master CAUSBC Director Lynn Matsubara. She received special recognition at the recent USBC Convention in Kansas City.

Bidwell, Reynolds Win JBT So. Cal Invitational:$7,500+ in Scholarships Awarded

SAN DIEGO—Devin Bidwell and Tabetha Reynolds earned

$1,000 scholarships each as champions of the JBT’s Southern California Conference Invitational Tournament, held at San Diego Naval Station’s Admiral Robinson Lanes.

Ricky brown led the qualifying round, averaging almost 210 on an extremely demanding lane condition, but fell quickly in the exciting triple-elimination matchplay format after a cut to the top 16 bowlers. Meanwhile, Bidwell qualified second, and tore through the early rounds, going 5-0 through the first five rounds.

With 8 bowlers left, Bidwell stayed on a roll, handing #4 Kyle King his second loss. Meanwhile, #8 Jeff Spiesman eliminated #15 Matt Jones, #5 Miguel Lopez eliminated #14 Greg Garbera, and #10 JR Monteith eliminated #6 Theo Douthit.

In round seven, five bowlers remained. King earned a much-needed bye, and watched as Bidwell handed Spiesman his second loss, and Monteith eliminated Lopez, who finished in fifth place. In round eight, Spiesman ousted King, while Bidwell eliminated Monteith, setting up a situation where Jeff would have to beat Devin three consecutive times to win the title.

Despite a game effort from Spiesman, Bidwell was simply too tough, and seemed completely dialed in on the tough pattern. He beat Spiesman in the first game, 211-184,to lock up the title, becoming only the second bowler in JBT history to go undefeated in Invitational matchplay (9-0). The $1,000 winners’ prize for his third career JBT title pushed his career JBT earnings over the $5,000 mark!

Devin Moody earned the top seed in the handicap division after qualifying, and got through the first five rounds of matchplay with only one loss. #2 qualifier Tabetha Reynolds did Devin one better, though, going a perfect 5-0 in the early rounds. In round six, Reyn-olds handed Moody his second loss, while #7 Chris Tucker beat #16 Jacob Camachom #15 Karlie Loop eliminated #4 Samantha Meyers, and #5 Kirk Chui gave #11 Drew Stern loss #2.

In round seven, Tucker eliminated Moody, Loop eliminated Stern, and Camacho stayed alive by giving Reynolds her first loss. With four bowlers now remaining, Reynolds eliminated Tucker, and Loop eliminated Camacho, setting up a final situation where Loop would have to beat Reynolds twice to capture the title.

Reynolds was having a relatively quiet season, but really put it together in the most important event of the year so far, and capped it all off with a 234 scratch game in the first match against Loop, more than enough for the win and the $1,000 scholarship prize for her first JBT title.

Over $7,500 in scholarships were awarded to the 72 quali-fier field. Thanks as always to Mr. Dom De Luca and everyone at Admiral Robinson for being great hosts. Want in on the fun, excitement, and huge scholarship awards of JBT events? Come on down to one of our big summer events, or be sure to sign up when the 2008-09 season begins in late August!

JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

WINNETKA—Welcome to the JAT Farm Club update, where this will be the last arti-cle of the 2007-08 season. This past weekend, the JAT took to the lanes at Canoga Park Bowl on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday we had our Tourna-ment of Non-Champions event with one bowler skillful enough to come back on Sunday for our Tournament of Champi-ons. Canoga gave us a very good shot as the high scoring will show.

For the format of our T of NC, we used the Open divi-sion format of 6 qualifying games and bracket elimination (top 8) to determine the new titlist. We had an unusual small turnout of only 16 bowl-ers for the non-champs event that was probably caused by our month off between the last regular tournament and this one. Leading almost from start to finish was Brian Hernandez behind reportable games of 256-255-234-224-236. Brian finished qualifying at plus 204 and had the tournament high game. Other qualifying highs came in from Victor Hilvano 248, Dan Updegraff 223-222-246-246, Kurtis Guenzel 246, Mark Myers 236-232-237-231, Jerome Jordan 236, Curtis Howard 236, Godfrey Galsim 235-234, Josh Gartrell 220-231, Gary Smith 227-224, and Joe Mayo 224. The cut for the bracket elimination (best 2 of 3 games) was Andrew Svoren at minus 39.

In the first round of eight, it appeared that everyone was speed bowling, with only one of the four pairings going to a third game tie-breaker. The field and advancement was Hernandez over Svoren, Smith over Jordan, Myers over Gar-trell, and Galsim defeating Updegraff. And the speed bowling continued during the round of four, with Hernandez getting by Smith and Galsim over Myers. Lastly, in the final round, the two decided to battle it out. In the end, it was Hernandez defeating Galsim 142-213, 171-168, 203-175. Congratulations Brian as you join Wesly Low as the Canoga Park 2007-08 champions, both of you under 5 feet tall.

Now with all of that high scoring, Sunday was even

more impressive as Brian was joined by 9 other JAT Farm Club champions. With only 10 bowlers on Sunday, we changed the format to be 10 games of match play with a top 3 finals. Now let me introduce our 10 champions by way of their reportable scores. First we have the tournament high game coming in from Brian Le with a 288. Mr. Le also had games of 230-254-235-238. Next we have Andrew Hilvano 225-279-222, followed by Max Slevcove 266-224-248-234-238-269, Virgil Hilvano 248-246-264-227, John McCullin 223-257-234, Brian Hernandez 249-257, Brandon Pekins 256-246-223-232-222-247-236, James Bael 224-246-226, Wesly Low 231-237-220, and Steven Maida 221-230-235-235.

The finals then started off with the third seed Le (+370) taking on V. Hilvano (+428). Brian took this match 226-189 to move on and now faced top seed Slevcove (+526). Slevcove took the first match 246-237 while Le capture the second 215-190. With both bowlers tired the long day came down to one game. And capturing his third title was Slevcove 192-146. Congratula-tions Max.

So there concludes our 2007-08 season. All that’s left is our year-end awards and getting ready for next season. Strangely, I’ll have over two and half months to do so. What will I do? Have a good summer everyone.

Ultimate Jr. Elimsby David Gordon

LAKEWOOD—This is a hard article to write, but it is a reality check. The Ultimate Jr. Elims summer tournament program housed at Cal Bowl is being cancelled after only three sessions. With only a half a dozen bowlers and no optimism of meeting our goal of twenty, I feel it is better to allow those six the time and money to enjoy the remainder of the summer.

There were a lot of factors that played into our low turn-out, among them national level tournaments, California Youth State, and the biggest one – gas prices. We will revisit the format of this event next sum-mer. But for now, it’s over and I’m going to enjoy my boring summer. Good luck and skill to everyone in all of the varied upcoming events. All see you all in September.

All “Hale” To Chief Tony in Rocky Marsh Doubles

by Joy McGregor

ANAHEIM—Resident Super Sub Tony Hale certainly put on a bowling clinic Friday morning. He shot a sizzling 289 right out of the shoot and followed THAT up with a picture-perfect Perfecto. Tony added a 226 to boast his first sanctioned 800 series, at 815. His 268 finale put him on top of the leader board and registered a whopping 1,083 set. Outstanding bowling Tony!

Shig Shozi was on his game and when he’s in “hiz zone”, he is un-stoppable. Shig tossed games of 270-204-246 for 720 and added 247 to register 967.

David Wright was “wright -on” and put on a show of his own firing games of 236-258-251 for 735 and added 201 to post a fine 956.

Tim Blough, new to Rocky Marsh this season, sent a message that he is to be reckoned with as he tossed 237-244-196 and 237 to total 917. Tim is a very personable and yes, unassuming young man. Welcome Tim!

E.J. Rogers, another very likeable young man and excellent bowler, strutted his stuff and showed his style on games of 237-203-204 and 268 to post 912.

Terry Brent, certainly no stranger to stealing the headlines, stroked his way into the 900 Club and showed his maple moxy on games of 233-191-220 and 258 to post 902.

Dora Miller bowled her way to high series for the gals. Dora tossed 204-183-252 and 225 to register a fine 864. Yay for the ladies and way to go Dora!!
