Autumn 2013
One of the pleasures of publishing for the V&A is the spectacular range of opportunity offered by the collections and exhibitions programme, which we can only try to reflect online or in print. This autumn our lead title Masterpieces of Chinese Painting, accompanying our highly anticipated exhibition, will alone cover over 1200 years of simply astonishing painting – rarely seen masterpieces from all over the world.
Comparably, The Art of Drawing showcases drawings by British-based artists made after 1600 – Hogarth to Hockney via William Blake and Lucian Freud. Also we have In Black and White: Prints from Africa and Diaspora, which shows work by artists including Uzo Egonu and Chris Ofili in an investigation into print as a medium of communication and cultural exchange.
Baroque and Later Ivories catalogues over 500 pieces from all over the world, and adds stunning new photography to form a worthy companion to Medieval Ivory Carvings.
In the twentieth century, we follow the success of Edward Bawden’s London with a fascinating look at Frank Pick, who commissioned – while at London Underground – some of the finest posters of the first half of the twentieth century from such artists as Man Ray, Edward McKnight Kauffer and, indeed, Bawden. Picking up chronologically from Frank Pick’s London is Modern British Furniture, which presents the most inventive British designers from 1945 to the present.
Fashion in Detail 1700–2000 brings together the best-selling V&A Fashion in Detail series of bestsellers into one volume, whilst a smaller pictorial history, the V&A Gallery of Fashion, illustrates 400 years of clothes from our new fashion galleries. At the more flamboyant end of the spectrum, the legacy of glam in fashion, theatre, music and film is explored in a new book, Glam Rock: Dandies in the Underworld.
Hollywood Costume, last year’s best-selling book on a century of Hollywood glamour is available in paperback, and Clara Button returns in a new adventure, Clara Button and the Wedding Day Surprise. Our final exhibition title is Pearls – which in many ways encapsulates one of our most exciting seasons – tracing its subject from East to West, and over two millennia.

For millennia pearls have been associated with royalty, glamour and status, treasured for their exquisite beauty. Pearls traces the history of these coveted gems over the centuries and across cultures from East to West, from the Roman Empire right up to the present day. Historical portraits and contextual material explain the social and cultural significance of pearls, exploring the changing fashions in how pearls were worn, whether as signs of luxury and status or as attributes of the Virgin Mary.
Pearls brings together an impressive range of jewellery, from the pearl drop worn by Charles I when he went to the scaffold to a brooch given by Prince Albert to Queen Victoria on their third wedding anniversary. From the late nineteenth century, luxury brands such as Chaumet, Garrard, Cartier, Tiffany and Bulgari came to the fore, and with the introduction of cultured pearls in the early twentieth century, pearls, formerly a symbol of privilege, became a more popular and affordable adornment.
Beatriz Chadour-Sampson is a jewellery historian and author who has published extensively on subjects from antiquity to the present day. She was the consultant curator in the redesigning of the V&A’s William and Judith Bollinger Jewellery Gallery and is guest curator of Pearls (V&A 2013).
MODERN BRITISH FURNITUREFocusing on design ingenuity, Modern British Furniture pinpoints the most inventive British designers and companies from 1945 to the present – from early post-war pioneers such as Ernest Race, Robin Day and Robert Heritage, to iconoclastic figures such as Peter Murdoch, William Plunkett and Max Clendinning, to today’s global superstars led by Tom Dixon, Ron Arad and Jasper Morrison.
Exploring the free-spirited and resourceful character of British design, this is a story of entrepreneurs who spearheaded their own companies – Lucian Ercolani at Ercol, Terence Conran at Habitat and Rodney Kinsman at OMK, among others – and the creative alliances between impassioned individuals and enlightened manufacturers, such as Frank Guille at Kandya. The book also looks at collaborations with international companies and foreign-born designers, such as El Ultimo Grito, who have adopted the UK as their base and injected further variety and spice into British furniture design.
Lesley Jackson is a writer, curator and design historian specializing in post-war design. Her books include Contemporary Architecture and Interiors of the 1950s (1994), The Sixties: Decade of Design Revolution (1998), Robin and Lucienne Day: Pioneers of Contemporary Design (2001), and Alastair Morton and Edinburgh Weavers: Visionary Textiles and Modern Art (V&A, 2012).

Painting has always been regarded by the Chinese as a supreme art, its merits equal to those of poetry and philosophy. The tradition can be traced over 2,500 years, but – from very early on – many Chinese paintings were made to be viewed on a temporary basis, displayed for just a few hours, or perhaps several weeks. The masterpieces of the form have been seen very rarely, and then only by few, particularly in the West.
This spectacular book accompanies a major V&A exhibition that brings together some of the world’s masterpieces on silk and paper – many of which will be displayed only for a short time. Presenting works from the richest and most representative collections in the world, the book is an authoritative guide to these great works, and includes the best paintings by the greatest masters as well as those by lesser-known artists. Written by a team of international scholars, the book explains the background against which Chinese painters worked, as well as the original social context of the paintings and their display in the palace, temple, studio or tomb.
Zhang Hongxing is Senior Curator of Chinese Collections at the V&A. His previous publications include The Qianlong Emperor: Treasures from the Forbidden City (2002); China Design Now (with Lauren Parker, V&A 2008); and The Most Beautiful Chinese Classical Paintings (with Zheng Xinmiao, 2011).

GLAM ROCKDrawing on the collections of the V&A, Glam Rock narrates the story of glam and explores its impact on fashion, theatre and film. In the early 1970s, glam rock changed the face of popular culture in Britain and, against a backdrop of a nation racked by economical and social crises, its flamboyancy and theatricality provided an excuse for a party and an escapist dream for musicians and fans alike. British acts like David Bowie, Roxy Music, T. Rex and Mott the Hoople – together with American fellow-travellers including Lou Reed, Alice Cooper and Sparks – drew on the original blueprint of rock and roll, as well as a host of other traditions, from Hollywood to the music hall, Berlin cabaret and Broadway musicals to science fiction and pop art. The resulting music was a wild blend of camp artifice and avant-garde decadence. By 1975 the era had come to an end, but glam never truly went away. Indeed, its attitudes and aesthetics have shaped much that has followed since, from disco to punk, the new romantics to Britpop, Prince to Lady Gaga.
Alwyn W. Turner is the author of Halfway to Paradise: The Birth of British Rock (V&A 2008), My Generation: The Glory Years of British Rock (V&A 2010), and the acclaimed trilogy on modern British history, Crisis? What Crisis?, Rejoice! Rejoice! and A Classless Society, as well as The Biba Experience and The Man Who Invented the Daleks.

Art, Design and the Modern City
Oliver Green
As managing director of the London Underground in the 1920s and the first chief executive of London Transport, Frank Pick (1878–1941), had more influence on the look of twentieth-century London than any other individual. Frank Pick’s London offers a unique overview of Pick’s passionate belief in the social and civic value of applied art and design and its impact on London.
Frank Pick’s London explores an extraordinary contribution to the everyday experience of modern London. Pick commissioned now familiar publicity posters from the likes of Paul Nash, Edward Bawden, Graham Sutherland and Edward McKnight Kauffer, iconic upholstery fabrics by Marion Dorn and architecture by Charles Holden for the extension of the Piccadilly line. Pick’s awareness of urban design is still with us today and can be traced through to the architecture of the Jubilee Line, the Crossrail project and Thomas Heatherwick’s new bus for London.
Oliver Green is former Head Curator of the London Transport Museum and now its Research Fellow. He has lectured and published extensively on transport art, design and history. His books include Underground Art (1990), Designed for London (1995), London Transport Posters (2008), British Aviation Posters (2012) and Underground: How the Tube Shaped London (2012).

IN BLACK AND WHITEPrints from Africa and the Diaspora
Gill Saunders & Zoe Whitley, eds.
Print has always been an art form for everyone – relatively cheap to produce and easy to distribute, and intended to be accessible to all. It links to painting, and creative autographic expression, as well as to a tradition of satire and protest, both social and political. Above all, prints are a means of communication and cultural exchange and, in the context of Africa and the African diaspora, these qualities have had a particular resonance. The book covers the period from 1960, presenting and interpreting a variety of visual images from the V&A collections in terms of their political and social context, while also addressing their identity as art and design. It includes prints by Uzo Egonu, Carrie Mae Weems and Chris Ofili among others, as well as overtly political work, such as posters attacking the Apartheid policies of South Africa and material produced by American Black Power organizations.
Gill Saunders is Senior Curator of Prints at the V&A. She has written widely on contemporary art and her publications include Prints Now (with Rosie Miles; V&A, 2006) and Walls Are Talking (KWS/Manchester UP, 2010). She was the co-curator of Surface Noise, a show of contemporary printmaking at the Jerwood Gallery, London, in 2011, and an exhibition 0n street art that travelled to Libya in 2012. Zoe Whitley is a curator at the V&A. She is currently conducting doctoral research into curating in the black diaspora, having curated exhibitions including Africa: Exploring Hidden Histories (2012) and Uncomfortable Truths (2007). She contributed to Postmodernism: Style and Subversion (V&A, 2011).

BAROQUE & LATER IVORIESMarjorie Trusted Over 500 baroque and later ivories from the V&A’s outstanding
collection are illustrated and discussed in this scholarly catalogue. This publication includes every ivory sculpture made after 1550 from a collection comprising German, Austrian, Netherlandish, British, French, Italian, Scandinavian, Russian and Spanish pieces, as well as examples from the Philippines, Goa, Sri Lanka and South America. The range of objects is extensive: statuettes, reliefs, tankards, boxes, cabinets, snuff rasps and cutlery handles are all represented. These small-scale sculptures might render dramatic scenes from mythology, present exquisitely carved portrait likenesses on a small scale, or depict religious narratives.
The high quality of the V&A’s holdings is readily apparent; leading ivory sculptors to be found here include Francis van Bossuit, Benjamin Cheverton, Balthasar Griessmann, Joachim Henne, Johann Christoph Ludwig Lücke, David Le Marchand and Balthasar Permoser. In addition to detailed entries on each piece, the Introduction summarises the history and techniques of baroque and later ivory carving, while indexes of subjects and artists, in addition to a comprehensive bibliography, provide a full scholarly apparatus.
