Dragon’s Extraordinary EggDebi Gliori

One dragon looking for an egg + one lonely egg in need of a mummy = one delightful relationship between the most unlikely of creatures

It’s bedtime in the land of ice and snow.‘Night, night,’ says Bib’s mummy.‘Sleep tight,’ says Bib’s daddy. But Bib has a better plan.‘Please,’ says Bib, ‘can I have a story? The one about dragons.’

And so begins the heartwarming tale of a dragon in need of an egg and an abandoned egg in need of a mummy. It seems like the perfect fit, but what happens when that egg hatches and the little baby doesn’t look like all the other dragons (in fact, he looks remarkably like a penguin)? Of course, his mummy loves him no matter what. But the other babies aren’t so sure. Little do they know that being different can be good and soon their little feathered friend is saving the day.

Debi Gliori is a much-loved and bestselling author/illustrator of over 75 books for children, including the bestselling No Matter What (Bloomsbury) and the Mr Bear series (Orchard). Debi lives near Edinburgh and has twice been writer in residence in the Shetland Isles. Her favourite colour is blue or, more precisely, four different shades of blue: cerulean blue, cobalt blue, Mediterranean turquoise blue and warm ultramarine blue.

Shh! Don’t Wake the Royal Baby!Martha Mumford

Illustrated by Ada Grey

A fabulously funny picture book to celebrate the arrival of the Royal Baby

It’s chaos at the Royal Palace – the Royal Baby just won’t go to sleep. Waaaaah! Waaaaah! Waaaaah!

The Royal Family has tried everything to pacify the little bundle of joy – from proferring the golden royal dummy to death-defying parachute jumps with the Queen. But, just when the little one seems to be settling, another disturbance is just around the corner. From yip-yapping corgis to marching guards and noisy party planning, the palace is awash with noise. Will it ever be peaceful enough to lull the baby off to sleep?

Martha Mumford has loved children’s books forever. Her mother was a librarian which gave her access to a wonderful array of books from a very early age. Shhh! Don’t Wake the Royal Baby is her first children’s picture book.

Ada Grey has worked as a successful illustrator of cards, gifts and stationery for many years, and now she is very excited to have developed a strong and appealing new illustration style for picture books.

When Little Brown Bear and Little Snow Bear meet by chance, a very special and enduring friendship develops

High on a mountainside, Little Brown Bear leaves the warmth of the den. He wrinkles his nose, stretches a paw, and with a deep breath, he goes out to explore. Meanwhile, where it snows and snows, Little Snow Bear leaves the warmth of her snow cave. She wrinkles her nose, stretches a paw, and with a deep breath she goes out to explore.

Little Brown Bear and Little Snow Bear may be different on the outside but inside they are just like each other. So when they are brought together by chance, a very special and enduring friendship develops.

An endearing follow-up to the heart-warming Penguin and Pinecone.

And the most important thing is DON’T FORGET TO GET THE MILK. Unfortunately, Dad forgets. So the next morning, before breakfast, he has to go to the corner shop, and this is the story of why it takes him a very, very long time to get back.

Featuring: Professor Steg (a time-travelling dinosaur), some green globby things, the Queen of the Pirates, the famed jewel that is the Eye of Splod, some wumpires, and a perfectly normal but very important carton of milk.

Neil Gaiman has written highly acclaimed books for both children and adults and is the first author to have won both the Carnegie and Newbery Medals for the same work – The Graveyard Book. His ground-breaking picture books include The Wolves in the Walls. The L.A. Times has described his multi-million-selling graphic novel series Sandman as ‘the greatest epic in the history of comic books’. Many of his books, including Coraline and Stardust, have been made into films. In 2011 he wrote The Doctor’s Wife episode of Doctor Who and appeared as himself in The Simpsons.

The WomblesElisabeth Beresford

Illustrated by Nick Price

Read by Bernard Cribbins

The classic, first ever Wombles book now available as a beautiful paperback with full-colour illustrations throughout and an audio CD containing three Wombles stories, read by Bernard Cribbins

The Wombles is the first in the much-loved and classic Wombles series and introduces many of the favourite Womble characters, from the stern but kindly Great Uncle Bulgaria to Orinoco, fond of his food and a subsequent forty winks.

Illustrated throughout in full-colour by the talented Nick Price, this enchanting edition will make the perfect gift.

Elisabeth Beresford first came up with the idea for the Wombles characters when walking on Wimbledon Common with her two children. She hoped that the Wombles stories would encourage children to fight pollution and to think up ways of ‘making good use of bad rubbish’. In fact, the Wombles so charmed the nation that they were chosen as the mascots for the Tidy Britain campaign. Since then they have had their own television series, first broadcast on Jackanory. Elisabeth Beresford was awarded an MBE for her services to children’s literature in 1998.

Bernard Cribbins is the voice of the Wombles. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2011 for his services to drama.

The Dead Men Stood TogetherChris Priestley

As scary and gory as Darren Shan, as gripping as R. L . Stevenson, a haunting adaptation of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

In a harbour town long ago, a boy is entranced by his uncle’s stories of adventure in lands far away. Ignoring the crazy talk of the harbour pilot’s son about the uncle being the Devil, the boy boards a ship with his uncle. But the uncle soon makes enemies of the captain and crew and, in frustration at their superstition, kills an albatross that has befriended the ship. As the ship sails on, madness and death ensue, and the boy and the crew face unimaginable horrors. A superbly gripping and haunting tale for fans of all classic horror.

Chris Priestley lives in Cambridge with his wife and son. His novels are brilliantly original additions to a long tradition of horror stories by authors such as M. R. James and Edgar Allan Poe. Chris wrote one of the World Book Day books for 2011 and has been shortlisted for a variety of prestigious children’s book awards.

But though she won the King’s contest and became his champion, Celeana has been granted neither her liberty nor the freedom to follow her heart. Celeana faces a choice that is tearing her heart to pieces: kill in cold blood for a man she hates, or risk sentencing those she loves to death. Celeana must decide what she will fight for: survival, love or the future of a kingdom. Because an assassin cannot have it all . . . And trying to may just destroy her.

Ennor’s mother left years ago, when things started to go wrong – and gradually their world has fallen apart. Now her father’s gravely ill, school has closed, and Ennor knows they’re going to take her brother away if things don’t pick up soon. All Our YesterdaysCristin Terrill

The most page-turningly addictive, brilliantly plotted debut you’ll read this year, packed with romance, action, conspiracy and a mind-bendingly clever plot, it’s The Hunger Games with a dash of Doctor Who, only much sexier

A brilliantly brain-warping thriller and a love story that leaps back and forth in time – All Our Yesterdays is an amazing first novel, perfect for fans of The Hunger Games.

Em is locked in a bare, cold cell with no comforts. Finn is in the cell next door. The Doctor is keeping them there until they tell him what he wants to know. Trouble is, what he wants to know hasn’t happened yet.

Em and Finn have a shared past, but no future unless they can find a way out. The present is torture – being kept apart, overhearing each other’s anguish as the Doctor relentlessly seeks answers. There’s no way back from here, to what they used to be, the world they used to know. Then Em finds a note in her cell which changes everything. It’s from her future self and contains some simple but very clear instructions. Em must travel back in time to avert a tragedy that’s about to unfold. Worse, she has to pursue and kill the boy she loves to change the future . . .

Cristin Terrill lives in Washington D.C. with one dignified cat and one deeply ridiculous one. She works in the theatre, holds what she says is the world’s most pretentious post-grad degree and bakes a mean margarita cupcake. All Our Yesterdays is her first novel, and she’s currently writing her second.
