About the NAACP

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation’s oldest civil rights organization. In existence for more than a century, the NAACP is responsible for a number of victories in the struggle for justice and equality in America.

With more than 250,000 members, the NAACP remains an important and vital progressive voice, focusing on several major human rights priorities which include: strengthening access to quality education, improving health and environmental justice outcomes, building economic opportunity and security, advancing criminal justice reform and promoting political representation and civic participation.

The NAACP has active branches in all 50 states, with more than 300 college chapters, 500 youth councils and 1,700 adult branches including branches in Germany, Italy, Korea and Japan.

The NAACP’s annual convention is regarded as the event of the year for those engaged in civil rights advocacy and ensuring equality for all Americans.

Through its annual convention, the NAACP leads a national dialogue on civil rights advocacy and establishes its policies and programs of action for the upcoming year. More than 5,000 people gather to explore and share models of advocacy for strengthening communities.
