PARTNERS Olympus and the Rencontres d’Arles are celebrating their 10th anniversary! To mark the occasion, Olympus is continuing its support for the arts by backing exhibitions by Samuel Gratacap and Mathieu Pernot and invites festival goers to discover the Photographic Conversation and the Carte blanche to Alex Majoli at the Palais de Luppé. The LUMA Foundation is a partner and producer working with artists and institutions involved in visual arts, publishing and multimedia; it continues its support of the Rencontres d’Arles with the LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award, and presents this summer the Annie Leibovitz exhibition The Early Years: 1970-1983. Archive Project #1 at the Grande Halle, Parc des Ateliers. BMW is to partner the Rencontres d’Arles for the eighth consecutive year and presents Always the Sun by Dune Varela, winner of the BMW Residency. BMW continues its support for contemporary arts with its BMW Residency at Gobelins, School of Visual Arts. The Fondation Jan Michalski pour l’Écriture et la Littérature is the main partner of the 2017 Book Award and Cosmos-Arles Books; its mission is to foster creative writing, inspire all those involved in the written word and encourage reading. SNCF Gares & Connexions is promoting the festival programme at railway stations in Arles, Marseille Saint-Charles and Paris Gare de Lyon for the eighth year in a row and will be the first to exhibit unseen photographs by Niels Ackermann and Sébastien Gobert at Avignon TGV station. Olympus and the Rencontres d’Arles are celebrating their 10th anniversary! To mark the occasion, Olympus is continuing its support for the arts by backing exhibitions by Samuel Gratacap and Mathieu Pernot and invites festival goers to discover the Photographic Conversation and the Carte blanche to Alex Majoli at the Palais de Luppé.

The LUMA Foundation is a partner and producer working with artists and institutions involved in visual arts, publishing and multimedia; it continues its support of the Rencontres d’Arles with the LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award, and presents this summer the Annie Leibovitz exhibition The Early Years: 1970-1983. Archive Project #1 at the Grande Halle, Parc des Ateliers.

BMW is to partner the Rencontres d’Arles for the eighth consecutive year and presents Always the Sun by Dune Varela, winner of the BMW Residency. BMW continues its support for contemporary arts with its BMW Residency at Gobelins, School of Visual Arts.

The Fondation Jan Michalski pour l’Écriture et la Littérature is the main partner of the 2017 Book Award and Cosmos-Arles Books; its mission is to foster creative writing, inspire all those involved in the written word and encourage reading.

SNCF Gares & Connexions is promoting the festival programme at railway stations in Arles, Marseille Saint-Charles and Paris Gare de Lyon for the eighth year in a row and will be the first to exhibit unseen photographs by Niels Ackermann and Sébastien Gobert at Avignon TGV station.

Nespresso is honoured to be part of the exhibitions in the “Latina!” section of these 48th Rencontres. AN OUTSTANDING PLACE AND SETTINGThe Maison des Arènes is an 18th century mansion in the heart of Arles near the most significant historic buildings and just a few kilometers from the Mediterranean coast. Computers, lighting equipment and shooting spaces are available to participants.

YEAR ROUNDAround 50 courses take place year round, on weekends from September to June and 4 to 6 days long during the spring and summer vacations.

VISUAL EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS MEETINGSEPTEMBER 22 — 24 The Rencontres d’Arles invites players in the cultural, educational and social fields, as well as anybody interested in visual education, to meet for three days of activities, experiments and sharing of experiences. Turnkey tools are offered to set up visual education programs geared to various publics.

MONDAY — EXQUISITE CADAVER Around the Specter of Surrealism exhibition. From images to words, this photography workshop is based on a famous surrealist game combining chance and creativity to create poetic photographic sentences.

TUESDAY — BREAK THE FRAMEChildren let their imagination run wild and develop their own stories by imagining what happens outside a photograph’s frame.

WEDNESDAY — CITY VIEWSAround Michael Wolf’s Life in Cities exhibition.This two-part workshop combining practice with exhibition visits raises questions about the representation of the city and architecture as well as exhibition design.

THURSDAY — GAME OF SCALESWhat is a point of view? Where should the people be placed? What kind of lighting should be used? How can perspective be played with? Young festival-goers become directors, actors and camera operators for a while.

FRIDAY — PHOTO EXPRESSIONParticipants produce images (staging, framing, shooting, etc.) in this fun workshop based on a photographer’s quote and a body of photographs.
