PARISH NEWS We continue to serve our parish family during the current Coronavirus restrictions. Sunday and
daily Masses are open to the public with some restrictions.
The Adoration Chapel is closed to the public at this time. We will continue to live-stream all
regular Masses at our website www.stpatricklaredo.org
Confessions will be held at the Church: Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m.
and on Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. Please be prepared to stand in line outside the church as
you wait for confession.
On Sundays the Confessions will be held in the parish hall 30 minutes before each
Sunday Mass. As you wait, be prepared to stand in line outside the parish hall.
The parish office is open during regular office hours:
Monday: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday - Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Can We Be Both Catholic and Patriotic?
This July 4th weekend we celebrate the 244th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This is a good time to consider what it means to be a patriot, and whether our patriotism can conflict with our Catholic faith. Patriotism generally means “vigorous support for one’s country.” It is very appropriate that we support our country, since we have chosen to live here [or at least we have chosen not to leave]. But how far should our patriotism go? In 1816 a famous U.S. naval officer, Stephen Decatur, was being honored at a banquet when he made a toast saying “Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong!” His words have been interpreted as meaning that we should always vigorously support our country, even when it is wrong. But that is the kind of patriotism that has been
responsible for terrible wars of aggression launched by one country against others. The Declaration of Independence, the founding document of the United States, gives us a more just foundation for patriotism. The second line of the Declaration says, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The Declaration affirms the equal dignity of all people,
not because of the actions of any government, but because of our nature, which was given to us by our Creator. When our country truly recognizes this principle, then we have good reasons to be patriotic. But if our country violates this principle, then we need to speak out against what our country is doing. Sir Thomas More gives us a great example of how our patriotism must be limited. He was a very high government official in 16th century England, when King Henry VIII appointed himself as the head of the Church of England. The King demanded that Sir Thomas take an oath in support of this action, but he refused. He wisely said, “When statesmen forsake their own private consciences for the sake of their public duties, they lead their country by a short route to chaos.” His refusal to support this action of King Henry VIII eventually led Sir Thomas to be sentenced to death. As he was led to his execution, he said, “I am the King’s good servant – but God’s first.” On June 22nd we celebrated the Feast of St. Thomas More, martyr.
There are times when our support for our country must yield to the beliefs of our faith. This does NOT mean that we should try to establish a theocracy, a government that is controlled by the church. For example, we should not try to get laws passed which force people to go to Mass on Sunday! But there are certain principles of our faith which we should never violate by our support of our country, especially the principles which are based on our human nature, on our inalienable rights which are recognized by the Declaration of Independence.
For example, it is patriotic to want to protect the security of one’s country. But our patriotism should not mean that we support any government practices which deny basic human dignity, even involving those who enter our country illegally. Every person should be treated with respect and kindness, because all of us have great and inalienable dignity. May St. Thomas More be a guide for us, that our actions in support of our country may never go against our Catholic faith.

¿Podemos ser ambos católicos y patriotas? Este fin de semana celebramos el 4 de julio y conmemoramos el 244o aniversario de cuando se firmó la Declaración de la Independencia. Este es un buen momento para reflexionar y pensar lo que significa ser patriota y si nuestro patriotismo puede entrar en conflicto con nuestra fe católica. Patriotismo generalmente significa "la pasión y el fuerte apoyo que uno siente por su país". Es muy apropiado que apoyemos a nuestro país, ya que hemos elegido vivir aquí [o al menos hemos optado por no irnos]. ¿Pero hasta dónde debe llegar nuestro patriotismo? En 1816, un famoso oficial naval estadounidense, Stephen Decatur, fue honrado en un banquete y al hacer su brindis dijo: "¡Nuestro país! En su relación con naciones extranjeras, que siempre tenga la razón; ¡Pero nuestro país, correcto o incorrecto!" Sus palabras han sido interpretadas en el sentido de que siempre debemos apoyar fuertemente a nuestro país, incluso cuando está mal. Pero ése es el tipo de
patriotismo que ha sido el responsable de terribles guerras y de agresiones lanzadas por un país en contra de otros. La segunda línea de la Declaración dice: "Sostenemos que estas verdades son evidentes, que todos los hombres son creados iguales; que son dotados por su Creador de ciertos derechos inalienables; que entre estos están la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad.” La Declaración afirma la
igualdad de la dignidad de todas las personas, no por las acciones de ningún gobierno, sino por nuestra naturaleza, que nos fue dada por nuestro Creador. Cuando nuestro país realmente reconoce este principio, entonces tenemos buenas razones para ser patrióticos. Pero si nuestro país viola este principio, entonces debemos hablar en contra de lo que está haciendo nuestro país. Sir Thomas More nos da un gran ejemplo de cómo debemos limitar nuestro patriotismo. Él era un alto funcionario del gobierno en Inglaterra durante el siglo XVI, cuando el rey Enrique VIII se designó a sí mismo como el jefe de la Iglesia de Inglaterra. Pero hay ciertos principios de nuestra fe que nunca debemos violar por nuestro apoyo a nuestro país, especialmente los principios que se basan en nuestra naturaleza humana, en nuestros derechos inalienables reconocidos por la Declaración de la Independencia. Por ejemplo, es patriótico querer proteger la seguridad del nuestro país. Pero, nuestro patriotismo no debe significar que apoyamos las prácticas gubernamentales que niegan la dignidad humana básica, incluso involucrando a quienes ingresan ilegalmente a nuestro país. Toda persona debe ser tratada con respeto y amabilidad, porque todos tenemos una gran e inalienable dignidad. Que St. Thomas More sea una guía para nosotros, para que nuestras acciones en apoyo a nuestro país nunca vayan en contra de nuestra fe católica.
