WelcomeFrom the Head of Staff Pensions ManagementWelcome to the Summer 2015 edition of PruLink, the magazine for Prudential and Scottish Amicable pensioners. As we reach the half way point of the year, it seems that 2015 is becoming a year of change. April brought radical changes in the world of pensions, which we report on in Company News, and we watched with interest as the results of the general election unfolded in May. And closer to home Prudential has also welcomed a new Group Chief Executive – more on that on page 3.

As always, however, this edition is about you. We have received a fantastic variety of letters, photographs, memories and poetry. All of us at PruLink were very sad to hear of the death of Frank Mason earlier this year. Frank was well known to many of our readers and had a long involvement with Prudential pensions, serving as a Pensions Research Officer for many years and later becoming Secretary of the Northern Ireland Pensioners Association after his retirement. His close friend Fred Dunlop reflects on Frank’s life in the Obituaries section. We were also saddened to hear of the death of Emily Icke, daughter-in-law of former Pru employee Simon Icke. The story of Emily's inspiring fight against Cystic Fibrosis has appeared in previous issues of PruLink magazine. Simon has written a tribute to Emily in the Obituaries section.

Features from previous editions of PruLink continue to bring back personal memories for many of our readers and we include more memories of the early days of computing, as well as an entertaining and enlightening account of life in Chief Office for a junior ‘erk’ in the 1960s.

This edition has seen the usual collection of landmark birthdays and wedding anniversaries, as well as what may be a Prudential record 74 years of marriage for Arthur and Betty Lanes! Many congratulations to all of you.

We hope that you enjoy this edition of PruLink. This is your magazine, and it’s made by your contributions, so we want to hear from you. Please contact the Welfare Administrator with anything that you would like to share in the magazine – details are on this page.

Company NewsPrudential welcomes a new Group Chief Executive

M ike Wells succeeded Tidjane Thiam as Group Chief Executive on 1st June 2015.

Mike Wells has served on Prudential plc’s Board since January 2011 and was previously President and Chief Executive of Jackson National Life Insurance Company. He has worked in life insurance, retirement services and asset management for 29 years and has served in senior and strategic positions at Jackson since joining in 1995.

Paul Manduca, Chairman of Prudential plc: “Following a rigorous succession planning process, we have found a fitting and experienced successor to Tidjane in Mike Wells, who has extensive experience of life insurance and asset management… As a member of the Board he has contributed to our successful strategy, which has delivered value for our customers and shareholders.

The Board is very sorry to lose Tidjane as Group Chief Executive but understands his desire to step down after leading the Group for six successful years. He has made an exceptional contribution to the Group’s success in recent years.”

Tidjane Thiam: “Mike has an outstanding track record. I have enjoyed working with him for the last seven years and I am pleased to be leaving Prudential in the hands of such an experienced leader… I want to thank the Board and all my colleagues around the world for their support since I decided to join Prudential in September 2007.”

Mike Wells: “I am honoured to have been asked by the Board to lead Prudential, which is one of the best-performing financial services companies in the world.

The Group is in excellent shape, not least because of the remarkable leadership

of my predecessor. I would like to thank Tidjane for everything he has done for the business.

Company News continuedScope

Disability charity Scope has been named Prudential RideLondon Charity of the Year for 2015. Scope works with more than a quarter of a million disabled children,

adults and their families every year, to offer practical everyday support and to deliver campaigns that change lives.

Scope plans to use the money raised by its partnership with Prudential RideLondon to continue their vital work with disabled children and adults. It will facilitate the continued funding of a national helpline for disabled people and their family members who are in need of advice and emotional support, as well as community-based support for parents of disabled children.

For more information about Scope, go to their website at at www.scope.org.uk

Prudential RideLondon

P rudential RideLondon is back for its third annual

celebration of cycling onthe weekend of Saturday 1st August and Sunday 2nd August 2015.

As in previous years the event will combine fun cycling events with a 100 mile sportive challenge through London and Surrey, and this year will include the 10th Brompton World Championship, to be held in St James’s Park.

Only in its third year, Prudential RideLondon has already broken a number of records, including the most money raised in a single day in a UK cycling event. It is hoped that this year’s event will be even more successful with organisers expecting 95,000 people to take part over the two days this summer.

Already the Surrey 100 road race has attracted a record number of applications, with 86,000 cyclists applying to take part. More than 25,000 cyclists are expected to enter the race on Sunday 2nd August to raise money for charity – hopefully breaking last year’s record £10 million.

Government pension changesYou will have probably seen the news about the

Government’s new ‘Freedom and Choice for Pensions’ which began on 6th April 2015.

These significant changes are primarily aimed at people approaching retirement who are members of a defined contribution pension scheme. The changes do not affect your main Prudential or Scottish Amicable pension, which is a final salary (defined benefit) pension.

If you have AVCs or a defined contribution pension from another source, such as a private pension or another employer’s scheme, you may be affected by the changes in one of two ways:

• If you have not yet used your defined contribution savings to buy an annuity, you may now be able to use your savings to provide benefits of your choice – including cash, a pension (annuity) or to provide a flexible income.

• If your defined contribution pension is already in payment – i.e. you have used your defined contribution savings to buy an annuity – from April 2016 it may be possible to sell this annuity for cash. However, details of how this will work have not yet been announced by the Government and it is expected that this option may not be available to everyone.

For further information on the pension changes, and how they might affect you if you have a defined contribution pension, visit the Government’s pension advice website at www.pensionwise.gov.uk

NOTE: It is widely expected that pension fraud will increase as a result of these new freedoms. You may be approached by phone, text or letter with offers to help ‘free up’ or ‘cash in’ your pension, or offering you a ‘pension review’. If this happens to you, check the facts before taking any action. You can call the Pensions Advisory Service on 0300 123 1047 for guidance or visit www.pension-scams.com

Nuts about netball

Following our article in the Summer 2014 edition of PruLink, Gillian Spencer (née Whitson) got in touch

with her memories of the netball league. Gillian was part of the team that played with Jean Dronsfield (née Prior).

Gillian says “I worked at East London District Office from 1948 to 1955 and played netball for the Ibis 2nd team. I couldn't play at Lincoln’s Inn Fields at lunchtime, but played many matches at Chiswick. I married John Spencer of K Accident Claims in 1954. John moved to Chief Office and was Secretary of the Ibis Golfing Society for 17 years and captain in 1981.”

This photograph shows two motor ambulances purchased for the British Red Cross by a fund started by Prudential’s agents.

Pensioners in their 90s

Peter Webb recently got in touch after seeing a photo

of himself in the Winter 2014 issue of PruLink (5th from the right in the ‘Swinging Sixties’ group photo of Haverfordwest staff). Peter told us that having seen photos of other pensioners in their 90s in the magazine, he thought we might like to publish one of him.

Peter says “I worked for the Prudential for 33 years (1950 to 1983) as an agent in H62-1503 agency (previously known as E15-1503). I was 91 on 7th September 2014, and am a D-Day veteran, having landed in Normandy on D-Day. In June last year, my son took me to Portsmouth for the D-Day 70th anniversary celebrations, where I had a very enjoyable time.

I live on my own, having lost my wife 6 years ago after bravely fighting Parkinson’s disease for 8 years, after 54 happy years of marriage. I am still driving and can do all my own shopping, cooking and cleaning. My son lives nearby and calls in most days, work permitting, sometimes staying for a meal or a pub lunch, for which I am very grateful.”

Gillian sent us this picture of the 1949/1950 2nd Ibis netball team, showing Gillian back left and Jean back right.

Working with computers – part 6

Mr J.T. Ward got in touch with us after reading our latest instalment of ‘Working with computers’ in

the Winter 2014 edition of PruLink.

Mr Ward worked with the very first computers that were introduced in Prudential more than 50 years ago. Here’s what he told us…

“The Prudential had been at, or near, the forefront of the mechanical processing of information long before computers came on the scene. The company used mechanical office equipment produced by the Powers-Samas company and others.

In the mid-1950s Powers-Samas started producing two mechanical/electronic machines to supplement their wide range of mechanical machines which processed information stored on Jacquard cards. These new machines were the Electronic Multiplying Punch or EMP, and the Punched Card Computer or PCC.

The PCC was a large machine, about fifteen feet in length by two foot-six wide and six feet high. The logic capability pre-dated transistors and was composed of thermionic valves and Germanium diodes assembled into elements with odd names such as Eccles-Jordan flip-flops, long-tailed pairs and cathode followers. The only storage for data was a magnetic drum, the orientation of which had to be taken into account by the programmers. The Prudential acquired four PCCs, the first two installed on the fourth floor of Bishop’s House and the others in Barnard’s Inn.

I joined the Prudential in June 1959 as an electronic computer maintenance engineer (Second Class Clerk) on Mechanisation Research, having previously been employed as a commissioning engineer by Vickers-Armstrong Engineers, the company which produced the EMP and PCC for Powers-Samas.

Initially it required five of us to keep the electronics functioning and as many mechanical engineers on the hardware to keep the PCCs operational. Reliability was not their strong point but they were eventually tamed and were used by Group Pensions and Mechanisation Research with differing degrees of success.

Later I was switched to programming, following a four week programming course run by ICT, and worked on the OB system. At about this time an IBM 501 computer was installed in Barnard’s Inn and the range of IBM machines followed including the 1401, 360 and 370.”

My Chief Office memories

Colin Dolan wrote to share his memories

of working at the Prudential for 36 years.

“1966: England won The World Cup & I began working at The Pru". I started work at the Pru in the ONB, which was Ordinary Branch Life New Business. I joined ONB4 which administered life new business proposals received from L Division (London) and H Division (South Wales). This involved some jobs with strange names such as the following:• Topping – this was to transfer all the relevant details from the

proposal to a facing sheet.• Boxing – this was to input additional details in various boxes

on the facing sheet – not thumping each other!• Writing up the stop clip & second drawer – I think

these expressions came from a time long before I joined but still persisted. They were done on a weekly basis and more often than not the more junior members of staff were reminded to do them by an older member of staff (known as 1st Class clerks).

As far as I can remember, this is how the ONB departments were typically set up. At the bottom of the pile were us youngsters – I don’t think we had an official name, but unofficially were called ‘erks’. Then 2nd class clerks, deputy 1st class clerks, 1st class clerks, lady chief clerks, deputy principal clerks (DPCs) and the older gentleman in the box (there was a glass box contraption for a bit of privacy) was the Principal Clerk (PC). Ours was Mr Stan Payne. Above that were Deputy Controllers and then Controllers. We sat in rows at wooden desks in order of seniority, with the PC at the back. Some of my memories of Chief Office life include:• Tea/coffee machines arrived in the late 1960s. Before then we

had tea trolleys with free cakes.• Calculations were done by ‘long hand’. There were a few

calculators which you had to turn by hand, as well as some more modern ones which were semi electrical but took up most of the desk.

• There was a separate toilet for Principal Clerks and above which had a ‘shoe shine’.

• If you did overtime you also got a shilling an hour tea money. • You had to do 20 hours ‘valuation’ overtime in February.• When the tea trolleys were replaced by machines you got a ‘one

off’ payment of £9 because you then had to pay for your drinks.

• The standard working day was 9:10am to 4:50pm with 50 minutes for lunch.

• Flextime came in during the early 1970s and before that you had to sign- in in the daily register in the morning. A senior member of staff was responsible for drawing a red line after 9.10am so it was easy to see who was late arriving. If you got more than 2 ‘red lines’ in a month you got a good talking to.

• The Principal Clerk and deputy would leave the building 10 minutes earlier at the end of the day to enable them to get out of the building before their underlings left.

• Internal communications were handwritten on memo pads with carbon paper.

When I first joined, there were various clubs and, along with some other junior lads, I went to the Ballroom Dancing class. Our aim in this was to meet some young ladies and we thought that we would be spoilt for choice. However when we got there the young girls turned out to be the canteen ladies!

During the late 1960s the ONB transferred to Reading. As I didn’t want to go I managed to get a transfer to The Data Processing department as a computer operator. I initially worked in Barnard’s Inn on the ICL 1904 computers, then in the new Fox Court building on the IBM 360. We worked a three shift system and I did this for three years before transferring to Group Pensions in 1973.

A couple of lunchtimes a week, several of us used to go training on the roof. If the weather was particularly bad we ran from the basement to the 6th floor and walked down doing press ups, sit ups, star jumps etc on each floor until we got to the basement where we would start all over again. Looking back I’m surprised that there weren’t any complaints, especially as the staircase could be fairly busy then!

In 1985 Reading got me in the end as I relocated with Group Pensions and stayed there until my early retirement in 2002. In my time at the Pru I worked with some very interesting people, made some very good friends and have many very happy memories.”

Colin is pictured (seated left) at the Prudential Long Service Awards in October 1999. With him (from left) are Ian Armstrong, Dave Metcalfe, Terry Chivers and Steve Pressland.

Poetry corner

A Great War JourneyI spent my days in Flanders fields, I passed through heroes’ graves that yield, ‘What brings you here?’ I hear them say, To Flanders fields so far away.

You gave your lives through strife and pain, That I might live my life and gain, To witness truth that knows no lie, Why mothers weep and children sigh.

The poppies sway from breezes by, They seem to whisper ‘Not Goodbye’, Blood red their colour, black their eye, As mothers weep and children sigh.

And though my journey now must end, The memories I will append, Of futile waste I know not why, Makes mothers weep and children sigh.

I know no glory, only lies, Of glories past as glory dies, Farewell my brothers, not goodbye, Your mothers weep, your children sigh.

Sleep, Sleep, The Battle EndsSleep, sleep, the battle ends, The sleep that some will not transcend. The weary time that comes but next, When fear will sometimes conquer rest.

Sleep, sleep, the battle ends, But who will wake to face again. The light of day, the fear of dark, Return again the songbird lark.

Sleep, sleep, the soldiers cry, For those who weep or those who die. Whilst fear is constant, sleep a lie, Some will wish their last goodbye.

For some to sleep, a last bequest, For some to wake to fear the test. A battle won, a battle lost, We sleep whilst others count the cost.

And now to sleep, perhaps goodbye, But sleep I must before I die.

An Ode to Tommy Atkins (Missing – 1914-18)Where have all the Tommies gone? Long time passing……

Where have all the Tommies gone? Long time ago…..

Where have all the Tommies gone? Gone to ‘glory’ everyone

When will we ever learn?

When will we ever learn?

Epitaph

A SOLDIER OF THE GREAT WAR KNOWN UNTO GOD

We cannot Lord, thy purpose see The price we pay for victory.

A battle won, a battle lost, Won’t countenance against the cost.

When strife is left the only course, And sets mankind upon a cause.

Lives are lost for freedom gained, Yet new lives grow but feel not pain.

The sacrifice of those we lose, Gives new life chance to learn and choose.

Will our future live or die, Upon a deed, upon a lie?

I am a soldier, and tho' I'm free I cannot Lord, thy purpose see!

Many thanks to Ralph Ellis who sent us a collection of poems inspired by his tours of the Western Front.

Ralph was a District Manager at Wigan G17 and has for many years been interested in the events surrounding

the First World War. Here we publish four of his poems.

To mark the occasion Colin Feist, Brian Perris and Tony Manning invited four of their former colleagues, who they meet on a regular basis, plus their wives to a celebratory weekend at the Marriott Highcliff Hotel in Bournemouth. All enjoyed a convivial evening eating, drinking and reminiscing on their times working together. During the evening it was established that collectively the group had worked for the Company for 289 years!

Frank Mason 1919 – 2015Frank was born and spent his early life in London. He was the older son of Walter and Lydia Mason, a family known for their longevity: Frank lived to 95, his sister Nellie to 92 and another sister Florrie to 100.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Frank enlisted in the Army and joined a signals unit. He saw action in France, North Africa (Cairo), Italy and Monte Cassino and was later in Greece and present day Iran and Iraq. While waiting on the beach at Dunkirk, Frank was given an Aldus lamp and ordered to communicate with the ships off shore, which he did for five days and nights.

On his return from Dunkirk, Frank was posted to Lisburn in Northern Ireland, where he met a local girl, Pat, at a dance. Pat and Frank wrote to each other for the rest of the war and subsequently married in Belfast in 1945. At the end of the war, Frank and Pat set up home in London where their only child, Laureen, was born. However, Pat was not happy in London and they returned to Belfast, where Frank found work as a District Agent with the Prudential in East Belfast.

Frank spent most of his career in the city and was promoted first to Section Superintendent in 1969 and then to District Manager. The city districts had their fair share of problems during the Troubles and in his later years Frank became District Manager in the seaside town of Bangor and retired in 1982. Frank and Pat began a very happy retirement together until Pat died in 1998 after more than 50 happy years of marriage.

Frank was very popular with his colleagues and he served them well with his interest in the Field Staff Trade Union. He served two periods on the Executive Council and was a regular member on the Negotiation Committee which met each year in Chief Office to discuss pay and conditions. As a District Manager, Frank was a member of the Prudential Old Boys Association and on two occasions he served as the President. Frank served for a long period as Pensions Research Officer and with his keen interest in Staff Pensions he represented the Association at meetings with Pension Welfare in Chief Office.

After his retirement Frank became Secretary of the Northern Ireland Pensioners Association and organised two coach tours each year to resorts in England, Scotland and Wales. He also organised the Annual Christmas Lunch for the Division until 2007.

Growing up in the 1930s Depression, Frank never thought he would have such material wealth in his life and many charities benefited from his monthly donations. He was made an honorary member of The Salvation Army because of his donations to their work.

Frank is survived by his daughter Laureen, his grandson John and great grandson Leo.

Emily icke 1989 – 2015Simon Icke, a retired Prudential Sales Manager, writes a moving tribute to his daughter-in-law Emily. Emily’s story first appeared in the Winter 2013 edition of PruLink in the article ‘A story of courage and hope’.

We will never forget Emily, the most courageous young woman we have ever met...

Emily had a double lung transplant on 10 December 2013 and for the most part of 2014 had a new lease of life and was able to do things she hadn't been able to do for several years. Also during this year she helped raise awareness and funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and other connected charities and got the message out to the UK through newspapers, national magazines and social media about the importance of people signing the NHS organ donor register, to give people like Emily the chance of extended life...

Sadly from January 2015 Emily's body started to reject her new lungs and despite the best efforts of Harefield Hospital (Royal Brompton, Uxbridge) they were unable to stop this rejection. Sadly our beautiful and very courageous Emily died on 11th June 2015 in the same hospital that gave her extra life. We are grateful to the palliative care team at the Royal Brompton & Harefield for making Emily as comfortable as possible. Emily showed amazing courage to the end.

Emily will be sadly missed by her beloved husband David, her family and many friends. She was an inspiration to us all. Gone but never forgotten. Rest in peace brave Emily.

Many people have expressed their wish to make a donation to Emily's favourite charities which are the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Charity and RSPCA South Bucks. If you wish to make a donation please visit Emily’s page at: uk.virginmoneygiving.com and search for Emily icke

Any money donated will automatically be shared and directly given to these three charities.

Simon would also like to raise awareness of the serious shortage of organ donors and invite people to visit www.organdonation.nhs.co.uk to sign the register.
