Since being elected nearly two years ago at the 67th Grand Council in Phoenix, AZ your Executive Council (EC) and Regional Officers have been working towards the development and execution of a strategic plan to serve the needs of our Fraternity. Our strategic planning retreat resulted in the identification of our top five strategic goals and the development of a strategic plan to achieve these goals. To read more about the activities leading up to the development of our strategic plan, click on this link to go to the February 2010 e-Communicator. I want to take a moment to provide you with an update on the progress towards achieving our top five goals.

1. Present three proposals for regional restructuring at the 2010 Regional Conferences.

Our Fraternity is experiencing tremendous growth that parallels the growth in the number of new schools of pharmacy. Over the past six years, three Chapters were reactivated and 16 new Chapters were chartered. Given the current and projected growth of the Fraternity, evaluation of our regional support system for Chapters was essential. By 2011, PDC was projected

to have an average of 14 Chapters per region. This is significantly higher compared to other professional pharmacy fraternities and organizations. Given that there are over 25 new schools of pharmacy without PDC Chapters, one can expect continued growth for the Fraternity. Increasing the support system for Chapters by increasing the number of regions emerged as the top goal for our Fraternity. The EC created four proposals to present to the 2010 Regional Conferences for feedback. Feedback from the Regional Conferences resulted in the EC’s approval of a modified plan for regional restructuring. The EC also received valuable feedback for the names of each region from the Regional Conferences. To read more about regional restructuring including the need for regional restructuring, benefits of increasing the number of regions, Chapters located within each respective region, and implementation plans, click on this link to go to the June 2010 e-Communicator. We have already seen benefits of increasing the number of regions, such as increased support from additional Regional Officers through eight Chapter Excellence and Quality (ChEQ) visits and seven Chapter

Visits, nine additional Regional Officer positions to allow Brothers to practice and further develop their leadership skills, a more manageable workload for Regional Officers, and three additional Regional Conferences that provide Collegiate and Alumni Brothers meeting planning experience.

2. Launch online membership database with self-updating functionality by August 2010 contingent on financial resources.

A communications survey conducted by Grand Vice President for Communications, Michael Nelson, revealed that Brothers desire an increase in website functionality. The Executive Council evaluated third-party options for updating and enhancing the content and functionality of our website and participated in webinars with four website management companies. The Executive Council signed an agreement with a website management company, Skipta, which has provided an enhanced website that includes a members only password protected networking website.

3. Launch e-commerce website for payment of National Alumni Dues, purchasing merchandise and jewelry,

and accepting alumni donations by January 2010.

PDC now has an e-commerce website (www.thePDCstore.com) where Brothers can pay National Alumni Dues, purchase merchandise and jewelry, and make donations to the Fraternity.

4. Increase the number of dues paying alumni to at least 800 by August 2011, which represents a 50% increase compared to 2008.

The number of dues paying alumni has exceeded 750 Brothers. Thank you for fulfilling your alumni obligation of advice and support! We are close to achieving this goal, but we cannot achieve this goal without your help. Please help us by reaching out to an Alumnus and encourage them to pay their National Alumni Dues (only $65), which is now easier through the use of our e-commerce website (www.thePDCstore.com). Progress towards achieving this goal has increased financial resources for Collegiate Brothers through the Brothers for Life Campaign which will award a total of 30 Grand Council registrations among 15 different Collegiate Chapters. To read more about the Brothers for Life

Campaign, click on this link to go to the February 2011 e-Communicator.

5. Raise $1 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by 2020.

In August 2009, the 67th Grand Council voted to continue their support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through The Prescription for Hope fundraising campaign. The Executive Council acted upon the 67th Grand Council’s commitment to St. Jude and identified a new naming opportunity for Phi Delta Chi. Upon completion of our new goal of contributing $1 million by 2020, St. Jude will recognize our support with the naming of a patient care room with adjoining parent rooms in gratitude of Phi Delta Chi. St. Jude’s patients need the support and love of their families during their hospitalizations, yet they also need their own privacy from time to time. Patient care rooms with adjoining parent room allow parents to be there for their child whenever needed, while still giving both parents and patients the privacy they need. Each room has a large window which allows parents to check in on their children without disturbing them, but the patient has control of the curtains. Phi Delta Chi is on target

for contributing $1 million by 2020. During the 2009-2010 academic year, we raised over $140,000, and during the 2010-2011 academic year, we raised over $145,000! Thank you for your support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. To read more about Phi Delta Chi’s commitment to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, click on this link to go to the June 2011 e-Communicator.

I am truly blessed to be a part of a Fraternity with committed Collegiate and Alumni Brothers. I have especially enjoyed serving as part of an Executive Council dedicated to focusing on the development and execution of a strategic plan to serve the needs of our Fraternity. Serving Phi Delta Chi with the Executive Council and Regional Officer teams for the past two years have brought life to the words, “to do good because it is a pleasure.”

Thank you for your support to Phi Delta Chi!

Please be sure to book your hotel rooms as soon as possible. Book them by contacting the Adams Mark Hotel directly. They can be reached at 716-845-5100. Be sure to tell them that you are with Phi Delta Chi. Remember that each chapter must select a collegiate and alumni delegate who will do the chapter’s voting. The closing banquet will be Saturday evening. It is at this banquet where we award the Achievement Cups and the Thurston Cup to the Fraternity’s

top chapter. Make your travel arrangements to leave Buffalo on Sunday.

Above all else, remember, you are there as a representative of Phi Delta Chi. Have a great time, enjoy yourself, visit with old friends and make new ones. I can’t wait to see all of you in Buffalo.

GRAND COUNCIL REMINDERS

Kenny Walkup (Alpha Upsilon)Executive [email protected]

Since January 25, Phi Delta Chi Alumni Brothers across the country have been declaring that they are Brothers for Life by paying their National Alumni Dues (NADs). They have done this because they understand that our common bonds of Brotherhood are not severed after graduation and that paying NADs is the official way to stay involved in Phi Delta Chi. These Alumni are often very involved in their collegiate chapter, giving advice and mentorship to the collegiate Brothers. They are also the people we reunite with at pharmacy conventions and Phi Delta Chi events and the people who serve as examples of how Phi Delta Chi can continue to impact life as an alumnus.

In two words: thank you. It is an honor to be a Brother to so many amazing people who feel the same strong bonds of Brotherhood and deeply rooted connection to our Fraternity.

It has been a joy to see Phi Delta Chi alumni step up to pay their NADs to help their collegiate Brothers win free registration to Grand Council. I truly believe that once a Brother attends Grand Council or a Regional Conference their connection to the fraternity and their Brothers becomes more deeply ingrained in who they are. Brothers begin to understand that Phi Delta Chi is larger than just their local

chapter and that there are collegiate and alumni Brothers across the country who are standing by to help them succeed.

Thank you to our alumni Brothers who have helped send Brothers from their chapter to Grand Council 2011 by paying their NADs during the Brothers for Life Campaign. You have impacted the lives of those Brothers and strengthened the fabric of Phi Delta Chi by giving your collegiate Brothers the chance to experience all that Phi Dex has to offer.

Congratulations to the 15 chapters that placed in the Brothers for Life Campaign*!

Congratulations to Beta Gamma Chapter for winning the Professional Fraternity Association (PFA) Outstanding Community Service Award!

PFA seeks to support professional fraternity and sorority member groups to preserve high standards on campus and in professional practice. PFA has 70 full and associate fraternal members, one of which is Phi Delta Chi. PFA annually recognizes excellence by presenting awards in several categories to chapters or individuals from among its fraternal members. The Outstanding Community Service Awards “recognizes a PFA member group chapter that has dedicated personal and financial support for the betterment of that chapter’s community”.

Look for a more extensive report on Beta Gamma’s achievement in the next issue of The Communicator.

REGIONAL LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Jennifer Esch (Alpha Nu)Grand Vice President for Student [email protected]

Have you held an office in your chapter and you are wondering what comes next? Have you recently graduated but still want to be involved with Phi Delta Chi? I encourage you to run for Regional Correspondent or apply to be a Regional Director for Alumni or Collegiate Affairs!

Regional Correspondents (RC) are elected from the collegiate Brothers in each region who still have at least one year of pharmacy school remaining. The election takes place during the Regional Caucuses at Grand Council. You would serve until the Regional Conference in the spring of 2012. Your duties include contacting the WC from each chapter once per month and helping them with their duties related to the Achievement Award Program. You encourage attendance at Regional Conferences and lead the business session during the meeting. You may have to help with planning of the conference and work with the National Office as a liaison. RCs are organized under the Grand Vice President for Student Affairs. The GVPSA is always available for questions

and assistance via monthly conference calls, email or phone calls! You can contact your current RC or GVPSA, Jennifer Esch, with questions. The application form is on the PDC website under the Grand Council page. It will also be available at Grand Council. Announcements will be made as to when the deadline is to turn them in.

Regional Directors are appointed by their respective Grand Vice President. Regional Directors for Alumni Affairs (RDAA) are appointed by the Grand Vice President for Alumni Affairs and the Regional Directors for Collegiate Affairs (RDCA) are appointed by the Grand Vice President for Collegiate Affairs. The duties of each office are similar; one deals with collegiate Brothers and one with Alumni. You would work with either the WCC or WAL from chapters in your region to assist the chapters with events, concerns and activities. Both encourage attendance at fraternity meetings and have roles at the Regional Conferences. If you are interested in either position for your region, contact the current

GVPAA, Lindsay Watson, or GVPCA, Amy Valdez. They can pass on your name to the next Grand Officer who will be appointing their Regional Directors shortly after they are elected at Grand Council.

All three Regional offices I have talked about also participate in chapter visits on a yearly basis and in the Chapter Excellence and Quality (ChEQ) visit process. Each region performs one of each type of visit per year. The chapter visits are lead by the Regional Officer team and the ChEQ process involves one Grand Officer and the Regional team.

Please make the commitment to step up and help out your region. The better Regional teams we have, the better the chapters in each region perform. I have enjoyed my time during my last two years as GVPSA working with my two sets of RCs. They have all been amazing to work with and dedicated to helping their fellow Brothers. Let’s continue this great tradition!

PDC BROTHER RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT-ELECT OF THE AMERICAN PHARMACISTS ASSOCIATIONAlpha Nu alumnus Nancy A. Alvarez is a candidate for President-elect of the American Pharmacists Association for 2012-2014. She has had diverse practice and participation experiences and has model behavior inclusive of pharmacists, irrespective of the practice path chosen for their careers.

If you are an APhA member, consider her biosketch and candidate statement (below). Candidate video responses can be located on the APhA website at www.pharmacist.com after June 1, 2011.

Poll is open now through the end of July. If you are an APhA member and received a ballot, consider casting your vote for her.

Nancy A. Alvarez, PharmD, BCPS, FAPhA serves as Trustee-at-Large and on the Performance Improvement and Strategic Directions Committees. Notably, she was an APhA-ASP National

Executive Committee Member-at-Large, New Practitioner & APhA-APPM Community/Ambulatory section officer, and a long-time delegate.

Before the Director, Medical Information in the Medical Affairs Department at Endo Pharmaceuticals, Nancy enjoyed a community practice with Walgreen’s and later a hospice/palliative care practice. She earned a PharmD degree from The University of Arizona in 1992 and is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist.

She has diverse participation experiences including service as Phi Lambda Sigma National President, inaugural PTCB Certification Council member and Phi Delta Chi Grand Vice President for Collegiate

Affairs. She’s a Pharmacy Leadership and Education Institute Board member, member of the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association and preceptor for student pharmacists.

Arizona pharmacy service was recognized with 1994 Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year and 1995 Employee Pharmacist of the Year Awards. National recognition consists of the 1997 PLEI Prescott Leadership Award for outstanding leadership by a pharmacist with ≤ 10 years career experience, 1998 APhA Good Government Pharmacist of the Year and the 2007 APhA-APPM Distinguished Award in Administrative Practice. She was named an APhA Fellow in 2004.

Nancy’s Candidacy StatementAt the end of the presidential term, my hope is to have contributed to courageous decisions so as to position the Association to enjoy a period of unprecedented fiscal strength and organizational capability development, complimented by growth in the number of pharmacist members. It would satisfy me to know the APhA staff has a bounty of human and financial resources at its disposal as a means to execute against a strategic plan which ultimately empowers members to improve medication use and advance patient care through advocacy, education and information. I hope to have led a strong collection of voices to inform policy makers and the public that pharmacists offer solutions to minimize the risks and costs coupled to non-adherence and misuse of medication issues.

I hope to offer myself as example of someone who has maintained consistent, career-long professional participation, because of the support APhA has offered to me, with the aspiration that it influences student pharmacists to plan ahead for how they intend to participate as they progress through the various phases of their careers and manage competing priorities.

I hope to continue to model behavior inclusive of pharmacists, irrespective of the practice path chosen for their careers. We are a community of pharmacists who have diverse practice interests and every role is equally valuable. The diversity of the membership lends strength and credibility to the APhA. Thus, APhA is our home.

Alas, I do not expect that any single, unique contribution during a term will be solely responsible for reaching the profession’s vision of being responsible for optimal medication use, but I do expect to offer my best self and contribute my part. I have accepted this obligation and serving as a presidential officer for the APhA is one way to fulfill it.
