Members of the Romulus Veterans of Foreign Wars presented a special Flag Day salute on June 14 at the RomulusSenior Center. The ceremony continued across the street at the Senior Towers. Senior Center Director Rose Swidanthanked everyone who attended and participated in Flag Day 2013. More photos are inside the newsletter.

Downriver area. Opening dayincludes a free breakfast at 7 a.m.
at St. Andre Bessette Hall inEcorse, the host city for this year’sOlympics. Bus transportation from
the Romulus Senior Center willtake place at 6:15 a.m. Opening
ceremonies are scheduled at 8:30,followed by a leisurely walk andvarious events. The deadline toregister for events was June 27.

ELECTION NEWSThe City of Romulus Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, August 6.The last day to register to vote in the election is Monday, July 8. City ClerkEllen Craig-Bragg said new residents must fill out a new voter’s registrationapplication, which is available at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 11111Wayne Road. Precincts and polling places have changed. Voters have beenmailed updated voter registration cards. To request an absentee ballot or to

Romulus Farmers MarketThe Romulus Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturdays through October at theHistorical Park Pavilion at 11147 Hunt Street nearGoddard Road in Downtown Romulus. Vendors sellsuch items as fresh eggs and produce, homemadebaked goods and handmade crafts. There will bechildren’s activities, too. The first Saturday of eachmonth will feature special events. Reminder: Be careful in the summer heatThe City of Romulus will open the Romulus Senior Center as a coolingcenter when a heat advisory is declared. A heat advisory will be issuedwhen the heat index is expected to be at least 100 degrees for three hoursor more. The National Weather Service reports thatabout 115 people in the U.S. die each year fromextreme heat. Metro Detroit experiences about adozen 90-plus-degree days per year. Romulus FireChief David Allison urges everyone – especially peopleover age 40 – to take extra precautions.

The beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the SeniorCenter are available for rent at very affordable rates.There are rooms that can hold up to 120 people andthey are available any day of the week.

Party Rooms for Rent Caregiver Support GroupThe final scheduled Caregiver Support Groupmeeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday,July 24, at the Romulus Senior Center.
Chris Goldberg, a contract social worker whohas been facilitating the meetings with WayneMetropolitan Community Action Agency, saidfunding for the program has run out for now.
The monthly meetings have provided a place forcaregivers to meet one another for comfort,assistance and helpful information onAlzheimer’s and dementia care.
Group meetings could resume if fundingbecomes available.Need Food?Low-income residents are eligible for freecommodities each month at the Senior Center. Avariety of food is provided by The Emergency FoodAssistance Program of Wayne County SeniorServices. This month’s food distribution begins at9:30 a.m. July 18. Romulus Senior Director RoseSwidan encourages anyone in need of food any timeto contact the center at (734) 955-4120.
Tornado SeasonTornado season is upon us once again. Note thata “tornado watch” means conditions are rightfor a tornado. A “tornado warning” means that atornado has been spotted and you should takecover immediately.
