It is our position that shame is to be shared by both the Swiss and our own governments for allowing accused sex offender Roman Polanski to again escape facing responsibility for his crimes while in the United States.

The decades-old charge became relevant recently when Polanski faced extradition from his luxury accommodations in the Swiss Alps back to Cali-fornia for his alleged role in a drug-induced sexual tryst with a 13-year-old girl. Since the risk of his facing a court to admit or deny the accusation came up some months ago, the 76-year-old film director has hid behind of a pano-ply of attorneys, famous Hollywood friends (like Woody Allen) and others.

Too old to face the music say they (he was 43 at the time of the alleged crimes). No one cares any longer say they. Sadly, the Swiss recently denied extradition, and our government capitulated.

While we do not accuse Polanski of guilt (he is known for using courts to pursue libel cases for his own means), we do believe he must be held to the same law he might be imagined to use as a shield when he is called to be accountable.

Accountability now The door to troubleIt is our position that leaders must step up en-

forcement of unauthorized door-to-door solicita-tions across our fair city. Routinely, organizations (both of good merit and questionable) canvas neighborhoods looking for takers of everything from candy to discount cards, and everything in between. Often, these groups pitch without permits and with complete disregard for signs indicating there is “no soliciting” permitted in that particular area.

The city of Carmel has enforceable regulations with regard to door-to-door vendors with specific exclusions for not-for-profit organizations. It is clear to us that by both the volume and manner the exemption is clearly being abused. Vans dropping off a slew of unsupervised teenagers to urge homeowners to dispose of any unwanted cash is not consistent with the intent of the exemption.

We support local schools and other organizations in their fundraising efforts, and we want to continue to see them do well. It is our fear that those organizations abusing the not-for-profit exemption are harming the efforts of legitimate, local causes that work to earn community support.

“Soothing” news from The Hill – Sicken-ingly, we moronic American taxpayers have forked over nearly $1 million per year in settlements to congressional employees who have been harassed or otherwise treated badly by their political bosses over the past 14 years, according to records from the Of-fice of Compliance. The payouts stem from hundreds of complaints from employees, some of whom may have been sexually ha-rassed or treated so poorly that third-party mediators were brought in to negotiate cash payoffs to settle the cases. Only in America.

When my beautiful bride and I find ourselves with a particularly perplexing parenting prob-lem, we, like many, evaluate our options, seek the wise counsel of those in our esteem, and ultimately make a choice on a course of action, knowing there is no perfect path. Specifically, we have to say no (and sometimes yes) when a no could likely cause harm as much as a yes. In denying a child the chance to grow through facing a difficult challenge, are we unintention-ally pushing them into something for which they might be wholly unprepared, leading them ultimately to years of therapy somewhere down the road?

We call it giving them a chapter for the book – if only mom and dad would have bought me the pony, I would never have become a serial killer. In all seriousness, our fellow parents know these kinds of choices are not as clear cut as we would like. In fact, many decisions are paradoxi-cal, demanding as much risk even as they hope

to provide security. We have found comfort in knowing our intentions are good – and then in saying, perhaps only half facetiously, that if we were perfect parents our kids would be entirely responsible for their own adult lives. By not let-ting our 7-year-old stay up as late as he wanted, we may have scarred him such that he cannot get into Harvard someday – but at least it is our fault, not his. Isn’t that a great gift?

This week, a national radio call-in show ad-dressed the issue that parents who had good marriages might be harming their children who as adults cannot find satisfactory relationships, because they cannot match the mom and dad ideal. I guess with our 20th anniversary, the boys will have another chapter for their tell-all. And I’m OK with it.

rent in Carmel and Current in Westfield edito-rial “Slow death or fast” (June 22). The U.S. 31 Hamilton County schedule has not changed since Gov. Mitch Daniels announced in Janu-ary that the project was on schedule to open to traffic in 2018. Looking back, it is important to remember this project was halted in 2003 due to lack of funding. It was revived in 2006 with the Major Moves initiative.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is looking forward to awarding the first of the construction contracts within the next six to seven months. The current construc-tion estimate for U.S. 31 Hamilton County is $435 million. By comparison that is nearly four times the size and scope of Carmel’s Keystone

Parkway project.Did you know that sections of Westfield Bou-

levard, Range Line Road, Union Street and Old Meridian Street were at one time part of the U.S. 31 corridor? It is appropriate for the state to turn over roads to the city in certain situa-tions. However, INDOT and the Federal High-way Administration must maintain U.S. 31 as a national highway corridor that stretches from Michigan to Alabama, and a key freight connec-tion between Indianapolis and South Bend.

Studies showed upgrading the existing U.S. 31 to federal freeway standards through Carmel and Westfield was the most effective solution for reducing congestion and improving safety.

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of working the Current booth at one of the local Fourth of July festivals. To one side was a guy selling some really cool shoes (Zeko’s, check them out) and to the other, surprise surprise, was the Indiana Republican Party.

I’m not sure any of their people knew my po-litical affiliation – after all, Mike Delph happily gave me a patriotic slap bracelet, and a former mayor, a much-needed hand fan – but I couldn’t help but think that God was playing some funny joke on me. After my article on accidentally vot-ing Republican in the May primary, you see, I re-ceived quite a number of not-so-pleasant e-mails.

I can understand religion and education ignit-ing some controversy, but politics? Really? How can the good Republican citizens of Hamilton County even take offense to anything a lonely Democrat says? Especially when the article was clearly intended to be tongue in cheek?

You would not believe how many GOPers actually believe I might be Karl Marx reincar-nate. And the things they said about our presi-dent! Wow. Don’t even get me started. Listen, our country is the awesome-est because we have two parties; because we can debate and argue and joke with one another in a civilized manner to ensure all sides of an issue are brought forth without fear of being sniped or imprisoned.

I am a Democrat, and I am proud to be one. My father was a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1960s and one of the first public defenders in Louisville. I was raised to fight for the underdog and those without a voice. And I know I am outnumbered by about a hundred to one, but for heaven’s sake, cut me some slack. I married a Republican, didn’t I? I even voted for Mitch

Daniels a while back. On purpose. And just to set the record straight, I did not vote straight-party in the primaries, and have never done so. The reason I didn’t realize I was looking at the wrong ballot was because there were only three races I wanted to vote in, all of which were non-partisan. Wait. Strike that. I’m not here to explain myself.

I just wanted everyone to take a deep breath and to stop getting your panties in a bunch ev-ery time I poke fun. I was attempting to point out my own stupidity and scatterbrain-ness anyway. The world is too serious as is; you don’t need me squawking about the really terrible things and you certainly don’t need to get bent out of shape over something so relatively trivial.

I don’t really have a point to this article except to say that I know I have a fairly great life right now. But I also know that nobody wants to hear about how wonderful my kids, family, job or house are. (We finally have an accepted purchase agreement!) My purpose here is to entertain, espouse, pontificate and maybe enlighten, but certainly not to work people up over sensitive and personal issues I can’t change anyway.

OK, sometimes it is, but in the case of the aforementioned voting article, it was not. So just relax! Nobody is trying to turn our little conservative world communist. I was just rant-ing about a particularly upsetting experience I had assumed most people would find funny. Much like I found my booth position yesterday. Peace out.

is under way after this year’s event was deemed a great success by organizers.

Bikes 4 Kids and Carmel Cyclery Bicycle Shop hosted Joshua’s Ride on June 6. More than 100 people came to the event, which exceeded

$5,200 in donations for Pediatric Urology at Riley Hospital for Children. The money will be used for kidney disease research and to set up a database that will follow children with Prune Belly Syndrome from birth to adulthood.

Donations are still being accepted at M&I Bank branches.

CVS to combine Range Line stores at new facility

Construction could begin this fall on a new CVS/pharmacy building on Range Line Road.

CVS Public Relations Director Michael DeAngelis said work on a new 13,000-square-foot building will begin later this year at the corner of Range Line Road and Medical Drive. The new facility, DeAngelis said, would open next spring and consolidate the two existing CVS locations on Range Line Road.

According to a proposal presented to the Car-mel Plan Commission in January, the new retail building would be constructed on the lots cur-rently occupied by the existing CVS and neigh-boring Taco Bell. According to the minutes of that same commission meeting, designs at that

time called for a more aesthetically pleasing two-story building with street parking in addition to a larger parking lot. A lack of square footage and parking spaces were cited as reasons for the new construction.

DeAngelis said all employees from the two current Range Line locations will be transferred to the new store when it opens in the spring.

“Until the new store opens next year, the existing locations will continue to serve their customers and operate business as usual,” he said in an e-mail.

The company owning the Taco Bell on Range Line Road, Southern Bells, has announced the store will close early next month when the fran-chisee opens a new location on E. Carmel Drive in a converted Boston Market building.

Elite runners will converge in Carmel next year for an inaugural racing event and a shot at a national championship.

It was announced last Monday that Carmel will host the USA Track and Field men’s 8K na-tional championship in 2011. The June 11 race will be part of the inaugural Carmel Marathon Championship Weekend, also including a 26.2-mile marathon, a half-marathon and a one-mile family fitness walk. The race is expected to fea-ture some of the sport’s top talents and attract thousands of potential visitors to Carmel and surrounding areas.

The Carmel Marathon Championship Week-end will be presented by the Carmel Road Racing Group, a new organization founded by local runners and businesspeople. The CRRG announced the weekend’s lineup of events in June but earlier this month announced that Carmel was one of two finalists for the USATF 2011 National Championship 8K. A purse of $20,000 will be distributed to the top 10 finish-ers of the 8K, which USATF CEO Doug Logan said will bring some of the sport’s elite athletes to Carmel.

City Councilman Kevin Rider said bringing pre-mier runners to Carmel is yet another opportunity to gain recognition for the city outside of Indiana.

“Like with the new Palladium, we’re looking for things that will put us on the national map,” Rider

said. “This will put us on the national map.”William Knox, director of the Hamilton

County Sports Authority said he’s excited about the opportunity the Championship Weekend will provide to Carmel. Knox added that there is still no official estimate on the number of potential visitors the event could draw next year, but he said the total could exceed 10,000 be-tween the four races, including participants.

“When this came across our plate, it was very at-tractive to us,” Knox said. “The average sports trav-eler spends about $110 a day in our community.”

While the event will benefit Carmel, Logan said USATF made the decision with its best interests in mind as well.

“We want to go where we’re wanted,” he said. “The officials in this town communicated in a very enthusiastic way that they wanted this race.”

Carmel lands national championship race

Cuttent in CarmelCarmel’s Christina DeVoe will

represent Indiana in the 2010 Miss International Pageant July 23 and 24 in Chicago. DeVoe is a 2008 graduate of Loyola University with a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in Music, and she currently she holds the title of Miss Indiana International 2010.

In addition to preparing for the pageant,

DeVoe has been busy with volunteer work as-sociated with her platform, iCARE, “Involving Creative Arts for Rounded Education.” She has initiated a privately funded statewide program enabling students to further their creative talents without cost to Indiana’s education budget. Whether you call this a recession, a depres-sion or just difficult times, we are all assessing our plans for spending and expect public enti-ties to do the same. If income is decreased, we pay for the essentials first, such as food, mort-gage car. In city government, it’s police, fire, public safety and municipal debt.

The Carmel City Council, of which I am a member, is struggling with funding the overspending at the Monon Center. For the last two years, the parks department has spent $1 million more per year than it took in, and the city and Clay Township have covered the losses. With this year’s expected loss to be slightly larger, the council’s position is that while we support parks and willingly gave the department money to fund its losses for the last two years, we expected the problems to be addressed and the losses to be reduced.

What we spend always depends on income. What is extravagant for one may be well within the means of another. When a commu-nity such as Carmel chooses to support money spent on schools, roads and revitalization, it

does so, collectively, as evidenced by the votes. However, it would behoove any government entity that believes its mandate does not have limits to check in with the citizens every now and then. If you’ve lived here long enough, you will recall the high school stadium/expan-sion issue. It’s not that we didn’t want it; it’s that we wanted to be asked. Government may believe it has a “mandate,” but times change, and government is the only business that can spend all the money given to it and then say, in effect, “We want more.”

While we all support parks in this com-munity, we believe that the department must acknowledge the new paradigm: Fix the issues at the Monon Center, maintain the parks we have and curtail new spending, at least for the present.

Or, put another way: Live within your means.

I receive resumes on a frequent basis from individuals looking for their next job. But a resume, no matter how perfectly worded and brilliantly organized, is not capable of commu-nicating a person’s work ethic. From a typical resume, I can assess job skills and work history, but I would like to know if they will show up on time and work hard.

So, I have a major tip for anyone who has an open position and still has not found just the right candidate. Melissa Cary-Ward showed up to volunteer for CarmelFest. She responded to the last article in Current in Carmel before July 4, which begged people to help fill the more than 400 volunteer positions needed to run the festival. Almost every year, some unknown per-son shows up for a two-hour shift and ends up doing much more.

Melissa Carey-Ward showed up and did a lot of impressing. She was assigned a traffic-control job on Sunday that was supposed to last only two hours. However, her relief did not show up, and she ended up doing a triple shift. “I think they actually forgot about me,” she said. But, no big deal, as once she was finally relieved from her post, she asked, “What else can I do to help?”

With those words, she and CarmelFest fell

in love. She worked tirelessly the rest of Sunday and then came back for more all day Monday. She was able to fit right in, sweating, getting dirty, solving problems and dealing with motor-ists who do not understand the words, “This road is closed. Do not go in there, because there is no room to turn around.” She seemed sur-prised they “went in there anyway.” Rookie.

Life has not been kind to Melissa recently. Besides suffering a layoff from one of our com-munity’s largest employers, she is dealing with other challenges as well. After hearing her per-sonal story, I appreciated even more her desire to get out and be a part of her community.

Melissa, the entire committee thanks you for your dedication, positive attitude and can-do spirit, along with all of the other CarmelFest volunteers. And to the readers of this column, should you be looking for someone with office skills, someone who is not afraid to sweat and dive right in, request her resume from [email protected]. Should you also need a charac-ter reference, I can get you several of those from her new friends at CarmelFest.

The sirens have stopped, the fireworks have ended and the bands and orchestras have stopped playing, but the positive energy of this year’s CarmelFest and its impact on our com-munity will last for months to come.

I want to thank the citizens of Carmel, West-field, Noblesville and Indianapolis for attend-ing the parade, the fireworks and the festival in record numbers, reinforcing once again that it is the best festival of its kind in Indiana. My committee and I spend thousands of collective hours each year to make sure that it is a well-run event, and the reward for our hard work was to see all of you respond by attending.

To all of the volunteers who came and en-dured the heat, all I can say is, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Your contributions to this great event were invaluable. Each year, as we grow in scope and venues, we struggle to fulfill all of our volunteer needs. Yet, this year we had numerous people volunteer for specific times and jobs, and then stick around and do more after their shift had ended. One young woman spent literally hours at CarmelFest this year. She was recently divorced, recently lost her job, and didn’t even live in Carmel. But she wanted to be a part of something bigger than herself. So, she

gave willingly to our community by serving all of us – and you - at CarmelFest.

Others recognize that this is the largest com-munity gathering each year in all of Carmel, and they want to be a part of its dynamic. One young couple was married at the top of the fountain steps during CarmelFest by Carmel City Judge Brian Poindexter. CarmelFest will forever be a part of their life.

There is a spirit of community that is growing here in Carmel. We are a unique city that has literally reinvented itself the last few years. Car-melFest, the Carmel International Arts Festival, the Center for the Performing Arts and other events and venues are helping to build some-thing through which the citizens of Carmel be-come closer given all that we have in common.

On behalf of all the members of the CarmelF-est Committee and the members of the Rotary Club of Carmel, and all our wonderful spon-sors, thank you all for coming together with us. We do it all for you.

Those looking for music that’ll make their ears ring, local Car-mel cuisine and a combination of art, family fun and fresh air can find it all at Rock the District 2010.

On Saturday from noon to 9:45 p.m. (or possibly later), this district-wide music festival in its fourth year will provide free entertainment for all members of the community. However, this event does not only serve as entertainment but also as a venue for performances by some Carmel locals who have made it in the music business. A few such performers include Alex J. Hughes, Chris Stone of the Chris Stone Band, John David Brake of Blue Luster, and Collin Obremski.

The acoustic-pop musician Hughes graduated from Carmel High School in 2007. He started writing music his junior year. In January 2009, a year and a half after he graduated from high school, Hughes went to Nashville and recorded his first EP.

Hughes has come a long way since high school and his CD release. During the past year, he has written a plethora of new music, which he said is deep and contains a lot of personal mean-ing. “This is probably the hardest I’ve worked since I’ve started playing,” Hughes said.

He will be playing his second Rock the District set and couldn’t be more excited about the showcase. He said he doesn’t come home often, but when he does, it’s a big deal.

“I like that I get to come back and play in front of my friends and family,” Hughes said.

Stone is fired up to play in support of her recently released

CD, Leftover Grooves. “It’s always fun to play in my hometown, and I appreciate the opportunity to showcase the CD and the band.”

Obremski, on the other hand, still lives in Carmel but has yet to play the event that he has attended in the past. Piano progressive pop is his forte, with the likes of Coldplay and Mutemath. His set at the show will include his own original music along with some covers. He said he’s just excited to be out there play-ing more than anything and to promote his EP, “Second Love,” which was released last fall.

“I definitely am looking to get it in people’s hands,” Obremski said.

Brake, vocalist for the “purest form of hard rock” band Blue Luster, said the band has been working hard after a missed oppor-tunity last year. Blue Luster was scheduled to play Rock the Dis-trict 2009 but nasty weather moved in and prevented the show from happening. It was disappointing for all, especially for Brake, but the band is ready for its second chance and will be hitting the stage hard this year.

“I really think that we’re going to remind people of what real rock is,” Brake said.

Hughes will be playing a lot of his new music at Rock the District this year along with some old music from his debut EP “Perfect Stranger.” He said that one of his favorite things to do is to tell stories with his songs, and that’s exactly what he’s done

with his new music.“I’m really excited to share

that with the audience,” Hughes said.

Hughes, a senior majoring in both telecommunications and communication and culture at Indiana University, said has no plans to end his songwriting anytime soon. He said that he feels a deep connection to music and wants to continue creating relatable lyrics for his listen-ers. However, at the same time, he’s not going to throw away his education at IU. However, music is still important to him and if the opportunity presents itself, he’ll jump full-force into music following his col-lege graduation.

“I think it will always be a part of my life somehow,” Hughes said. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.”

A reader writes, “Please address the texting epidemic that is overriding our kids’ communi-cation and social skills. My kids waste a lot of time texting when they could be doing some-thing productive like finding a job. Please help!”

This is a tough one, especially when a new slogan for today’s texting disease could be, “Let your fingers do the talking.” How crazy is it for kids 12-18 years old to be unemotionally involved in every facet of their relationships by texting instead of hearing themselves speak?

How damaging is their ability to text their thoughts – without so much as experiencing a “feeling?” What, I imagine, began with a knowl-edge for parents to know where their kids are in the interest of keeping them safe has turned communication between family and friends into a totally abusive social trend that, in my opinion, will be the demise of talking and an introduction to robotic behavior. It sounds funny even to write it, but it’s no joke when you consider:• Texting among kids requires no

accountability.• Texting among kids requires no emotion.• Texting among kids requires no spelling

skills.• Texting among kids removes any opportu-

nity to be self-motivated.• Texting costs money – talking face-to-face

is free.• Texting among kids makes it difficult for

parents to monitor what they’re texting. Granted there is a time and place to allow

kids to text. A) When they need to let us know where they are and with whom they are with. B) When they need to let us know they need to be picked up – without their friends knowing they asked and C) Any emergency where phoning is not possible.

My recommendation would be to arrange with the phone companies to allow plans to include incoming and outgoing texting for emergency situations only. I understand these plans block all calls not programmed. Are we raising unfeeling, unemotional, unmotivated robots? It’s important that we project what the current texting rage will produce 20 years from now when our kids are parents. We need to do our kids a favor by limiting their texting and encourage expressive eye-to-eye verbal commu-nication. Hugs!

You know what radio stations are bril-liant for? Overplaying good songs until I hate them. Yeah, yeah. I know there are ways in which the playing times are determined, and popular songs should be played often in order that the maximum number of people will hear them and blah, blah, blah. It’s still obnoxious.

Overplaying happens in language, too, and it’s just as obnoxious as it is on the radio. Take today’s topic: unique. It’s a great word. But people use it too much. So much that it just isn’t unique anymore. It’s Taylor Swift. Cool, but overplayed.

And the definition of unique is often loosely interpreted. In its strictest, original meaning, unique meant either “sole or only” or “having no equal.” It has also come to mean “unusual.” And unusual isn’t always good.

Open up any real estate magazine, and you’ll see unique in abundance. My recent real estate favorite was an ad that claimed the house was, “uniquely special,” which is sort of like saying, “brownish brown.” And frankly, unique in real estate ads scares me a little: I like houses fairly standard. You know, with a kitchen and bed-rooms and indoor plumbing. Claims of unique-

ness aren’t necessarily a good thing, you know. It’s a unique house that has open floor drains instead of toilets, but that doesn’t mean I want that.

Overuse isn’t the only problem with unique, though. My main issue with misuse of unique is use of it with a comparative adverb such as more or less. A few people may disagree with me here, but unique is a word of absolutes. A thing is ei-ther unique or it isn’t. It can’t be kind of unique or slightly unique or mostly unique or mildly unique or more or less unique than another thing. Nearly any grammarian will tell you that hearing someone use unique with a comparative adverb makes his or her skin crawl. It’s a sort of standard by which many grammarians can pick out the men from the boys, so to speak.

So while I’m not going to tell you not to use unique at all, I am going to recommend strongly that you use it very sparingly. Even more spar-ingly than exclamation points. And for the love of Pete, don’t use it with a comparative modi-fier. A grammarian might be within earshot.

Carmel Community Players’ next production begins this week, but in an unusual location.

CCP will present “How to Succeed in Busi-ness Without Really Trying” at Guerin Catholic High School starting Thursday. Michael Long, CCP president, said the talented cast on this show worked extremely hard while rehearsing in several different places. Carmel United Method-ist church let the CCP use the basement before opening night.

“You have to roll with it and be flexible. Thankfully, this cast worked hard the whole time,” Long said.

“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” is a satire of business in the 60s. Vince Accetturo plays J. Pierpont Finch who starts off washing windows in New York City, but after reading a book on success he quickly climbs the corporate ladder.

“There’s a love story involving a secretary fall-ing in love with the boss,” Long said. “A lot of the moments are very sweet, but honestly there is a lot of hidden innuendos in the humor.”

Long added that the closing number entitled “Brotherhood of Man” can’t be missed.

“Little Women” was the last show that the CCP had at Guerin Catholic High School and, it drew 700 people in attendance.

“Because of the way the economy is, it’s hard to tell how many people will be showing up

because most people come at the last minute to buy tickets,” Long said. “The whole experience we had at Guerin last year was what drew us back to the location.”

“A plate can be made with your knowledge, or it can be made with your heart,” according to Terrell Gray, owner of Queso Blanco, an authentic Mexican restaurant in the heart of Westfield. Terrell and his wife Yolanda started the restaurant in 2007. Although there are several other Mexican restaurants in the area, Terrell and Yolanda believe they have some-thing special to offer: “Mexican food with an authentic homemade flavor, as if you were dining with friends in Mexico.” Yolanda brings her knowledge of Mexican cuisine from Oaxaca, a city famous for its cheeses. In fact, the name of the restaurant means “White Cheese,” a smooth, creamy, mild cheese found throughout Mexico. Fajitas are a delicious choice for an entrée, but make sure to leave room for a banana chimichanga, their “best dessert,” ac-cording to Terrell.

Ralph Truitt, a wealthy widower in his ‘50s, places an advertisement in the paper for “a reliable wife.” Catherine Land sends a letter and in the following correspondence between the two eventually sends a photograph. After writing for several months, Truitt sends a rail car to bring her from Chicago. However, when she arrives, she is not the woman in the photograph.

Becuase those at the railroad station are aware of who Truitt is waiting for, he feels that he must take her with him. On the way home, the carriage horses are spooked in the winter storm and Truitt is seriously injured. Catherine spends several days nursing him because according to her plan he can’t die yet. Slowly Catherine’s background and plan in marrying Truitt are revealed. What she intends to do is shocking but not so shocking as why. And yet, when it comes time to carry out her plan, she has doubts and must contend with conflicting thoughts and emotions.

This book is a compelling read as the author slowly reveals the backgrounds of the major characters. Very much a psychological drama, the book is also very sensual. The frozen Wisconsin landscape also plays a role in the story.

one end of oiled cookie sheet, with fingertips, spread and flatten 1 piece of dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. (Edge does not need to be even.) On same cookie sheet, repeat with another piece of dough. Repeat with a second oiled cookie sheet and remaining dough.

3. Place all 4 pieces of dough, oiled side down, on hot grill grate. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until grill marks appear on underside (dough will stiffen and puff).

4. With tongs, turn crusts over. Working

quickly, arrange one-fourth of mozzarella, one-fourth of tomatoes, salt, and pepper on each crust. Cover grill and cook pizzas 3 to 4 minutes longer or until undersides are evenly browned and cooked through.

5. Transfer to cutting board; sprinkle tops of pizzas with basil, and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Cut into wedges. Makes 4 servings.

I’ve lost 20 pounds, and it all started with a small commitment. It all started with a com-mitment to replace one less-than-healthy meal with a better one. Goodbye to pizza on Friday, hello baked chicken. I made the commitment to an improvement that required one simple change. To create a new habit that was better than an old habit. This small commitment led to another small commitment, then another, and another. In 45 days, I was 20 pounds lighter and making a commitment to new pants.

My daughters both eat their beans. And it all started with one bean. Eat this single bean, and before you know it, it’s two beans, then it’s, “You get candy if you eat four beans” to its final resolution of two certified bean lovers. Green, baked, Lima, if you can say bean with it, they will eat it. All of this bean loving from a com-mitment to a single bean.

It’s how I ended up married. It all started with a small commitment to a date. It was tennis in the daytime; what could come from that? Fast

forward through several commitments of increas-ing significance – drinks after tennis, dinner before drinks, getting together without playing tennis – and then I look around to find myself in front of a minister with as many witnesses as we could afford. Small commitments lead to larger commitments, and that proven fact of human nature is available to everyone. At home with the beans or at work with clients, get small commit-ments and then slowly build on each.

We often make the path to an end goal too complex. If you want a certain conclusion try untangling things by focusing on the immediate next step. And make that immediate next step a small commitment on the path to a larger com-mitment. They say you can create a new habit in 30 days. Take a small step today on your path to something larger.

The mix of religion and plastic surgery is an unlikely pairing that on the surface goes togeth-er like oil and water.

Those considering plastic surgery and who have deep personal convictions undoubtedly feel an oil-and-water-like contrast. While no Christian religions of which I am aware specifi-cally forbid cosmetic surgery, it is with a certain amount of guilt that one of such beliefs ponders such a seemingly self-aggrandizing act.

I recently saw a mother on whose son I had operated many years ago to repair a birth defect. To leave a child’s face deformed is, of course, unimaginable in our society. Even those with the deepest and strongest of personal convic-tions against “plastic” surgery would not quibble about a parent’s decision to seek reconstruction of a birth defect. The same could be said for a church secretary I saw who had breast cancer and wanted immediate breast reconstruction. But what about my former pediatric patient’s mother, who now wanted a tummy tuck? Or what about the individual who has body issues so serious after a 100-pound weight loss that their mobility is affected?

For some, plastic surgery seems like a selfish and indulgent pursuit. While this response is

often a knee-jerk reaction, those with religious convictions are forced to look even deeper and confront their beliefs and sometimes even ques-tion their spiritual integrity. But in a modern consumer-driven society, these personal im-provements are as readily available as the office across the street.

A baby with the cleft lip and a mother who wants a tummy tuck seem worlds apart. But are they really? My observation is that both situa-tions are wholly about the need to look and feel “normal.” No parent corrects a birth defect with aspirations their child will one day become a supermodel, and a mother of four kids whose body has borne the brunt of repeated pregnan-cies is very similar. Few cosmetic patients I have ever met really want to be special; most only want to feel better about themselves.

What I tell any patient – of strong religious conviction or not – is plastic surgery is a tool. It is a method for personal improvement. The de-cision to have surgery or not is only part of the personal enrichment process.

Chromium is an essential trace mineral that occurs naturally in some foods, including egg yolks, whole-grain products, coffee, nuts, green beans, broccoli, meat, brewer’s yeast and some brands of wine and beer. This trace mineral has been determined to play an important role in the metabolism of protein, carbohydrates and fat.

The interest in chromium as a nutritional enhancement to glucose metabolism can be traced to the 1950s, when it was suggested that brewer’s yeast contained a glucose tolerance factor that prevented diabetes in experimental animals. Interest regarding chromium adminis-tration in patients with diabetes was kindled by the observation in the 1970s that it truly was an essential nutrient required for normal carbohy-drate metabolism.

Studies have shown that insulin and the avail-ability of the cofactor chromium can dramati-cally increase glucose uptake and utilization. When the body is deficient in chromium, it must produce more insulin, and that makes the body less efficient for glucose utilization. Be-cause most foods rarely supply more than 10 to 15 percent of the chromium we need, it is rec-

ommended to eat a variety of fresh fruits, veg-etables, meat, whole grains and dairy products.

Normal recommended intake for chromium is 50–200 micrograms per day for adult men and women. Many of us have diets high in processed foods, which are deficient of natural sources of chromium. Additionally, chromium levels can decrease with age, and also instances such as intensive training or low-calorie diets deplete the body of this essential mineral.

One can ensure the body gets needed chro-mium in our diet through a quality whole food mutli-vitamin, or by taking a chromium supple-ment such as chromium picolinate, chromium polynicotinate or some of the more recent chro-mium complex formulas that may improve bio-availability, with a doctor’s guidance, of course.

Anyone who likes to live with energy and have healthy blood sugar levels and metabolism would do well to have a healthy diet and proper supplementation to ensure getting necessary levels of the essential trace mineral chromium.

Pardon me if my writing is a bit fuzzy. I just fell out of a coach seat on a 777 after a nonstop flight from Dubai, UAE.

The trip to Dubai was to visit my youngest son, Evan, who is studying at the American University in Dubai for the summer.

Yes, Dubai is a young, metropolitan city, and the décor ranges from cosmopolitan to opulent. But that was where my enchant-ment and interest ended. Outside of the glitz Dubai is known for, another world exists – and I was not prepared for it.

I tried to be a good sport … really, I did. We arrived in Dubai at 9 p.m. and were greeted by 100-degree heat. A driver ap-proached us and immediately offered to take our bags to the car. No, make that, offered to take my husband’s bags to the car! I put on my good-sport face and ran behind Mike, while pulling my out-of-control suitcase and spilling my carry-on.

A traditional Arabic restaurant on the river side of Dubai was on the itinerary for the following evening. My son had been to the restaurant several times and had always been seated on the main floor. We were escorted out of the main dining room and seated in a dark alcove reserved for women patrons.

At this point, I was still buying into the explanation that women were treated with such respect that they had their own areas in public places. I was fine being shuttled to the back of the restaurant. The meal was great, and I developed a great affection for hummus.

An adventure was scheduled for the following day. It was Abu Dhabi Day. I probably should have realized I was in for a cul-tural challenge when my son informed me I needed to wear long sleeves and long loose pants, have a scarf handy and go easy on the cosmetics. It sounded to me like he was going to throw in the need for a parka and boots any minute.

Actually, I knew in advance that women dressed quite modestly outside of Dubai and that I would need to dress in a manner that would allow me to blend in. Yeah, right. I came prepared with my American version of modest –black gauzy pants, a long sleeve gauze shirt, finished with a shawl/scarf thrown stylishly over the shoulders.

There is a special place for women on buses in the UAE. Un-like the restaurant, where my family was banished with me to the “special” area, I was told to sit with other women away from my husband and son. There was a sweet little sign over my head that read “ladies only.”

The bus station in Abu Dhabi was not Kansas, and Toto was not there to protect me from the jeers of the Arabic and Pakistani men who yelled out as I passed them with sleeves rolled up and arms exposed. My solo departure from my husband was to search out a ladies room, and my steps quickened as I spotted the uni-versal figure in a skirt that stands for a women’s restroom!

I escaped into the restroom safely out of the way of the stares and shouts of the men on the bench. After a sigh of relief, I turned the corner only be greeted by a tiny woman babbling a language I did not understand. This peculiar woman held out a hand, and pointed to the stalls – they were open holes in the floor. Excuse me, but I don’t do holes in the floor. I turned as fast as I entered, ran past the men who had calmed their jeers and found my family waiting by a newsstand all cool, calm and col-lected … as if nothing had happened.

God bless the U.S.A. …really!

Some weeks back I mentioned Mark Noll’s classic book “Scandal of the Evangelical Mind,” promising to read it and get back to you.

Written in 1994, “Scandal” surveys Christian Evangelical intellectual development over the past few hundred years and the news, to say the least, is not great.

The dominant points I got from the thoroughly researched and citation-laden book are that 1. Jesus Christ plainly tells us in the Gospels to “Love the Lord your God” with all our heart, soul, strength and mind (Matthew 22:37, Mark 12:30, Luke 10:27), and 2. (… ouch …) Evangelicalism so far has largely failed at the “mind” part.

Shocking as that may seem, Noll is in a posi-tion to make such an observation.

A prolific and noted author, Noll taught for 27 years at robustly biblical Wheaton College out-side Chicago as Professor of Christian Thought. He was a Wheaton undergrad, has a Masters in Theology from Trinity Evangelical Seminary, and a PhD in Church History from Vanderbilt.

Noll received a National Humanities Medal in 2004 from President George W. Bush, and in 2005 was listed among Time Magazine’s “25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America.” In 2006, Noll was named professor of history at the University of Notre Dame, a Catholic School.

Note the diversity of plaudits and affiliations; he’s respected in many camps.

Noll is renowned especially for his scholarship in the Christian religious history of the United States, and has written extensively address-ing the complexity of the question of whether America is a Christian nation. Look him up if you want to know more.

“Scandal” is a worthy read in order to under-stand how Evangelical Christianity developed at first toward, and then away from, intellectual pursuits. One of my favorite statistics in the book is that in 1839, 51 of America’s 54 college presidents were clergymen, and mostly evangeli-cals. By the late 1800s, college attendance had exploded and college academics became focused on technology and science.

Theology, once the crown of the Academy (the educational establishment), by the 1900s steadily retreated from the main stage of America’s collegiate administrations and course offerings, becoming the purview mainly of Bible colleges and seminaries.

American scholarship took a track toward the materialistic, and the Bible became Evangelical-ism’s intellectual ramparts.

There’s no better book on the planet than the Bi-ble but, Noll asserts, Evangelical thought narrowed.

Have you ever encountered a violator of the “girl code” (the code by which all women must live)? I dated a guy who was friends with a girl who didn’t care that she flirted with him right in front of me. In her tiny shorts, she bent over with legs straight, right in front of him, saying she “needed to stretch”, as her half naked derri-ere waived in the air for his amusement.

I put up with her insinuations that I was invading her territory by trying to infiltrate their little circle. And then there were her verbal “jabs” at me when he wasn’t paying attention to make me feel like I was unimportant. (Of course, he was oblivious.) I tried to befriend this gal, but as we all know, girls like this never get along with other women.

Now, I’ve never had a problem dating men in the past who have female friends. I could care less, as long as it’s not a situation like the one above, in which she has an evil agenda.

I never told my guy what was going on. Why? Every girl knows you can’t win when it comes to the female friend. If I had brought up the topic, this is what would’ve happened: He would’ve thought I was jealous (and he would’ve been

wrong). Then he would’ve mistakenly thought he had to choose between her and me, he would never have believed me about her agenda, and he would’ve talked to her about our problems. (Men, never talk to your female friends about your relationship troubles!)

And this would’ve been her fodder for the ol’, “But we’re just friends. I can’t believe she would say such things about me” innocent victim routine, and I would’ve looked like the bad guy and she the cool, sweet damsel. Little would he know that if he ever dated her he’d soon realize that any girl who tries to steal another woman’s man is the type that will make his life miserable via her insecurities and unhealthily strong need for male attention. Needless to say, this situation was hopeless, so I threw that guppy back in the pond.

Take heed, chicas. Any female who breaks the girl code is only going to reap what she sows. Stay within the boundaries of the girl code and be leery of those who don’t.

The portable computer (laptops, netbooks, etc.) became the top-selling category of computers when it began to outsell the desktop computer back in the third quarter of 2008.

And because there are more units being sold every year, there are more people being confronted by the much higher costs to repair portable computers when they break. Unlike standard desktop computers that mostly use interchangeable parts, laptops are composed primarily of proprietary components that generally come from one source: the manufacturer.

Other than the RAM (Random Access Memory) and the hard drive, be prepared to “pay the piper” for replacement parts, even if you can find them used, which is why I always caution buyers to make sure they really need the portability.

The single most common service we perform on portable com-puters is the same service we perform on desktop computers: Fix-ing corrupted or infected operating systems (nothing to do with hardware failures). Malicious software (malware), viruses and general over-installing of unnecessary programs is by far the most common reason we see our “patients.”

From an actual failure of components standpoint, here are the top five reasons we have to repair a laptop and what you can do about it:

Motherboards (39 percent): Motherboard failures are the most common (and one of the most expensive) repairs we per-form, and about half of the time it’s from a poor decision made by the user. (The other half, it’s just a poorly designed mother-board.) When the original power adapter dies, many are often enticed to buy “universal” power adapters from third parties, but these universal adapters can deliver excessive power when they fail, often blowing up components on the motherboard.

DC Jack/AC adapter (18 percent): This is one of the repairs that is 100 percent user-caused. The power adapter often plugs into a small hole that contains a rather delicate pin jack that if pushed to one side or the other or in too hard can short out, break off or crack the solder connection or even the motherboard. Tripping over the power adapter’s cord or pushing the laptop back into a wall or cabinet account for most of these repairs, so take caution around this jack.

LCD Displays (17 percent): Unless you drop the laptop, the most common display repair deals with replacing the backlight or inverter for the LCD. There’s a finite number of hours the dis-play ‘lighting’ will run before failing, so the best way to avoid this repair is set your laptop to go to “sleep mode” whenever you close the lid and close the lid whenever you aren’t using the laptop.

CPU Fans (6 percent): The processor in a laptop generates a lot of heat in a very small space, so it’s critical to draw the heat away to keep everything running properly. While most fan failures are caused simply from normal use, if you have pets or smoke, you can increase the likelihood of a fan failure, because the air vents on your laptop are more likely to get clogged up.

Keyboards (4 percent): This is another failure that is generally a ‘liveware’ (human) caused repair. Spilled liquids are the primary drivers of this type of repair, so if you just can’t fathom keeping liquids away, get a keyboard spill guard installed.

Human behavior is a big reason for laptop failures, so if you want to avoid a visit to “the doctors,” remember these tips!

I never said I was the sharpest knife in the drawer or tool in the shed. I am neither rocket surgeon nor brain scientist. I know my limita-tions, is what I’m trying to say.

Even so, sometimes I do things so stupid they surprise even me.

For example, I have been driving around without any music in my car for about, oh, six months. Why? Because I lost the radio.

No, it wasn’t stolen. I lost it. And in the stupidest possible way, which I’ll get to in a minute.

I suppose you could blame a streak of absent-mindedness that runs through the males in my family. Dad had it something awful.

Dad was a smoker who loved convertible automobiles, and as such he was able to do something I always admired but could never duplicate: Dad could light a cigarette with a match – not a farmer match, but a regular old matchbook match – going 70 miles an hour with the top down.

It was amazing. With his left hand steering, he could pull a match out of a book, strike it,

and cup his hand around it so the flame stayed alive, in wind equal to a hurricane, until he got his Newport fired up. Then he’d casually kill the match and flick it out onto the road.

(Yes, I know, every litter bit hurts and only you can prevent forest fires. You want to com-plain about it, talk to Dad. You’ll find him in the Brighton cemetery, not too far from Grand-ma and Grandpa. He’s not very talkative – never was – but he’s a very good listener.)

So flash forward to about 1968 or so. We’re riding down the road, Dad and me and my brother P.D., in our spiffy new Ford Galaxie 500 convertible. Unlike our other car, this one has a cigarette lighter that works, although it doesn’t have it for long.

As we’re cruising down the Mongo-Ontario Road, at Dad’s customary 70 MPH, Dad uses the lighter to start another Newport. Then he casually tosses it out onto the road. P.D. and I are clutching our sides and laughing so hard that we can’t tell him what’s so funny for an-other three miles. Dad does not find it quite so amusing.

So you can see I come by it honestly, and frankly, I am a MILD case by Dad Standards.

Even so, I have my moments, which gets me back to the radio.

It was one of those detachable face jobs, you see, which I got after the previous (non-detach-able) radio was stolen. And to prevent theft I always detached the face and brought it into the house with me.

Such as when I returned from the grocery store where they double bag and put it, I be-lieve, between the bags. I put the produce in the refrigerator and the Froot Loops in the pantry and then, shades of Dad, forgot all about the radio.

Long story short: It went off to be recycled.As I said, it has been months, and I have yet to

replace the radio. I believe such unalloyed bone-headitude deserves some penance. Besides, I kind of like the quiet. It’s a nice respite from a noisy world. Of course, it does leave a gap in the dash but that’s OK. I still have the lighter.

The heat is affecting all of us. That’s the only explanation I can come up with for the follow-ing five weird things that happened to me this past week. All true.

As I walked up and down a mall in India-napolis and peered in the store windows, I real-ized mannequins no longer have heads. I asked a sales clerk about it. “That’s right, Sir,” she asserted. “We have several without arms, as well. Very minimalist!”

“But don’t you want people to imagine them-selves in your clothing, so they’ll be more apt to make a purchase?”

“Sir, we don’t think it’s necessary to have a head on the mannequin simply to visualize how the attire will look on you. Now, how may I assist you?”

“I’d like to buy a hat.”•••

At the supermarket last week, I saw a new sign at one of the express lanes: “About 15 items.” This was a change from the universal “15 items or less.” Apparently, people in line were counting things in other shoppers’ carts, so management felt new guidelines would offer customers a little wiggle room.

I noticed two people at the check-out having a heated exchange. The man in front had 30 items; the woman behind him had just a loaf of

bread. She was not happy and told him so. He snapped back, “Listen, Lady, my 30 items are as ‘about’ 15 as your one item is ‘about’ 15.”

I believe rules at a supermarket should be unambiguous. But I’d sure like to find a way to park in the “Mothers with small children” space

•••I called a restaurant last weekend and asked to

make a reservation. “Of course, Sir. On what date?”“A week from Saturday.”“I’m sorry, Sir, I can’t make a reservation un-

less you know the exact date.”“I do know. A week from Saturday. I just

don’t have a calendar in front of me.”“Sir, if you don’t know the exact date, we can’t

hold the table.”I called back an hour later and provided the

required information. “Sorry,” she said, “We’re booked that evening. I wish you had called earlier.”

•••I was talking to a friend about his smart

phone. He flipped on his device and showed me the application he used to purchase a ticket online for entry to a state park. His phone then calculated his route, kept track of the miles walked, monitored his blood pressure and iden-tified the flora and fauna he encountered along the trail.

“Which park did you visit?” I asked.

“Not a clue,” he told me. “But I had a great hike, all 17,653.5 steps.”

•••My wife and son share the same birthday, and

I decided to surprise them with a Black Forest cake. I asked the bakery to decorate it with a special inscription. When I presented the des-sert, Mary Ellen asked, “What does that mean, ‘Happy 103rd’?”

“Don’t you see?” I beamed, “I added your age to Brett’s and wished you a combined happy birthday!”

“Dick, you added 59 to 23 and got 103?”I did. What was I thinking? My wife had a

theory. “When you went into the bakery, there was a cake for a 103-year-old woman. But she died that day so you got the cake for half price.”

The rest of the night I tried to figure how I added 59 and 23 and got 103. No matter how I did the numbers, there was an extra 21 left over. My son suggested I may have inadvertently add-ed in my math SAT score. He thought that was funny and asked me if I would add that joke to my column this week. I said no. You can’t have your cake and edit, too.

Retrofitting comes in three flavors: modest, moderate and mega. Employed smartly, they can all have tasteful impact.

A recent modest deck retrofit allowed our team to relocate a cumbersome set of stairs to a much more traffic-friendly position (the homeowner’s brilliant idea). The originally centered deck steps emptied awkwardly into the middle of the back yard. It also caused the patio furniture placement to be consuming and stubby. After being repositioned to the side, the space feels genuinely liv-able, spacious and easy to navigate.

As a “green” bonus, we were able to completely repurpose the old steps in the retrofit and then fill in the created void with new spindles and railing to match. The pressure-treated pine deck-ing was in respectable condition and did not require replacing. Most premium pine will last a happy decade or two if cared for properly.

What started as modest graduated to moderate-plus, with the flavorful ad-ditions of a pergola, small brick patio, natural flagstone path and subtle water feature.

This underappreciated overhead struc-

ture often carries many responsibilities and not everyone “gets it.” The western exposure on the deck was brutal, so cre-ating dappled shade was a primary hope, as was setting the stage for a little sense of privacy. Thus, the very open lattice element was constructed which will en-courage a wondering clematis to simmer in. Intrigue and the feel of an outdoor room was a planned bonus. This unique, rough sawn pergola with detailed ends and notched overheads accomplishes that and much more.

Retrofitting is a very smart way to improve without completely demol-ishing … and still produce a fantastic result. Results. That’s really what retro-fitting is all about. It can happen with decks, brick patios, landscape, porches, basements and men’s suits, but that’s a different story. Thanks for reading, and enjoy the summer.

One of our sales people, Joe Evans, was in a half-million dollar home recently in a half-million dollar neighborhood, talking to a young couple who two years earlier had moved into an existing, not very old home.

Big house. Handsome brick exterior. Beautiful two-acre piece of wooded, rolling prop-erty. Private, but close to major roadways and convenient for a young family.

Perfect.Except, the owner noted,

that on the inside when they bought it they found a very average “spec” home … the original builder had put no custom, compelling or class touches in the in-terior finish, and the original owner had left it that way. So, the new homeowner went about the laudable and prudent task of turning the inside of the house – one project at a time – into a residence worthy of its distinguished neighborhood.

The kitchen was thoroughly redone in granite and top-quality cabinets, appliances and fix-tures. Every wall in the house was repainted, with fine touches added such as crown mold-ings and stone fireplace fronts. Every carpet

and piece of flooring was replaced. A nearly unusable rear deck was transformed into an all-season breakfast nook just off the kitchen.

And the final large project – the piece de resistance, the reason Joe was there – was to

thoroughly gut and redesign the large, oddly configured (two sinks facing each other on an island in the middle of the room?) and dated master bath-room suite.

Normally, of course, the kitchen and master bath are the first things addressed in a renovation. Everybody knows those are typically the two top home-value boosters. But because this young family

planned to be there a while, they very smartly updated the

more “public” spaces in their home first.These folks saved the best for last, and did a

nice job of setting priorities, adding value and thinking through their renovation to the end.
