Mission Priest: My Cue to Take Vacation

As one could see from the photo in last weekend’s bulletin, many family members were there. I apologize to my sister Betty, who was in the photo (the red-head, third row from the back on the left) whose name was

not mentioned. In the photo were my mom’s six children, six of her nine grandchildren (my three nephews in Minneapolis had other commitments), two of her five great-grandchildren, the significant others group in the photo, and my cousin Bill, who traveled all the way from Oregon to be there for the event. At one moment during the party, I had to feel bad for my mom. Some of the members of the family thought it would be real cute to adorn my mom with a little girl’s wand, tiara, and sash that said “Birthday Girl”. That is the sash seen in the photo. She was embarrassed those things were put on her, but understood that it was worth making a big fuss over it. She tries to keep our family events as peaceful as possible. I mouthed the words “I’m sorry” as they were putting the sash on her.

It was good seeing her, and I was reminded that it has not since last July that I was in Fargo, meaning that I had not taken any vacation days since then. I am not big on vacations, unless there is something really specific I want to do. Seeing Mom more often would probably qualify. I also have been negligent on taking an annual structured retreat that all priests should be taking. That will be rectified. In light of seeing Mom in the near future, I will have that opportunity on the weekend of July 15 and 16, when the Mission Priest will be preaching.

Fr. Melanio Viuya, MJ will be flying in from Los Angeles to preach on his Mission. The “MJ” stands for “Missionaries of Jesus.” He will be doing the Masses at both Saint Pius V and Saint Joseph and preaching about his mission. The following weekend, he will preach at Saint John Neumann in Eagan. Then he will fly back to Los Angeles. The week in between, he will be staying at the house at Saint Joseph. He has graciously offered to say the daily Masses for me that week, even the Wednesday Mass at Twin Rivers.

So, with that in mind, I will get to see my mom for a more extended time. I will leave the Friday Fr. Melanio arrives and return the following Thursday sometime to prepare for a wedding that next weekend. —TB

Everyday Stewardship

It took five years of marriage before I was ready to have that first baby. Of course, now that I have three children I cannot imagine a life without them. After twenty-five years, I cannot imagine life without my wife as well.

And I know that I am lucky. I know those who have lost children or have been widowed. They couldn't imagine life without their loved ones either.

The tough reality to digest is that we don't own those whom we love. They are all gifts from God, entrusted to each of us as good stewards. If we cling too tightly, we become like the steward who buried his talents in the ground. If we don't care enough, we become like the prodigal son who squandered his gifts on gambling and frivolous living.

But can we love our loved ones too much? I am not sure it is possible to love others too much if it is genuine love. However, if we truly love them, then we will want to lead them to the One that gave them to us in the first place: God. We do that by demonstrating that no one comes before God in our lives, not even our family.

In this world, our loved ones make living meaningful. But this world is not the end. As much as we love them here, our ultimate goal is for them to live eternally with God. May my wife and kids never think I chose them over God, so that they may choose God over all else, as well.

Vatican Synod on Youth/Young Adults

Pope Francis is calling a general assembly (synod) of the bishops on the theme, “Youth, Faith, and Vocational

Discernment.” This Synod will take place in October 2018. The Holy Father believes a better world can be built

with the efforts of young adults and their desire and generosity to invest in themselves, to make bold choices, and

to be led by the Holy Spirit. The Church wishes to listen to the voices of young people, their sensitivities, their

faith, even their doubts and criticisms. In preparation for the Synod, Pope Francis is gathering information worldwide to better inform the bishops of the realities of young adults. Young adults from around the world are asked to respond to the official Young Adult Synod Survey. The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis is also facilitating Young Adult Listening Sessions.

Visit this webisite: http://www.archspm.org/YoungAdultVoices/

for more information on times and locations and to take the survey.
