ABA Practice Forward Report

The American Bar Association (ABA) recently released its Practice ForwardSurvey. The scope of the survey captures the effects of the pandemic on

lawyers and moving forward with plans and expectations for the practice oflaw. A copy of the results of the Survey is available here.

A Panel discussion occurred at the Mid-Year Meeting regarding thefindings of the Survey and its implications.

New Additional Software Platform for Evidence Presentation tobe Implemented in Virgin Islands Courts

V.I. Bar Members,

In order to enhance the ability to present materials digitally in remote as wellas in-person court proceedings, the Judicial Branch of the Virgin Islands has

procured a Thompson Reuters software known as “CaseLines” – a cloud basedplatform for case preparation, evidence sharing, courtroom presentations for

remote and in-person proceedings. CaseLines allows litigants to uploadmaterials in advance of hearings or trial to a single repository, which can beshared with the Court, opposing counsel and witnesses during the course ofthe proceeding. The platform supports the ability to upload various types of

files including multimedia files and provides a means to direct those alsoviewing the platform to a specific section.

The Court intends to go live with this software on Monday, September 27,

2021 for selected Civil, Family and Criminal matters. If your case has beenselected to utilize the CaseLines platform, you will receive an invitation fromthe Court to register for CaseLines and get access to your case. You will alsoreceive an invitation to attend a 60-minute training session to learn how to

upload information and navigate the software to be heldon Wednesday, September 15th at 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. AND 2:00

p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

You will also be contacted with an invitation to attend a 60-minute trainingsession to be held on Wednesday, September 15th at 12:00 p.m. – 1:00

p.m. AND 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (see attached Microsoft Teamsinvitations) on how to upload documents and navigate CaseLines. We intend

to go live with this software on Monday, September 27, 2021 forselected Civil, Family and Criminal matters.

New Passing of Attorney Elliot "Mac" Davis

We wish to pause sadly to announce the passing of a long-time member of theVirgin Islands Bar. Elliot "Mac" Davis passed away on September 11, 2021, at

the age of 70. Attorney Davis was admitted to VI Bar in 1979.

In addition to serving as a former Solicitor General and Legal Counsel toformer Governor John P. deJongh, Davis was an active community member,

dedicated Rotarian, Salvation Army volunteer, a longtime Magens BayAuthority Board member, a past Board of Trustees president at Antilles Schooland a cancer survivor who ran marathons and cycled to fundraise for research

for a cure.

We convey deepest condolences to his wife, Deborah Kreke Davis, his children,and his grandchildren.

ABA Ethics Line

The ABA recently announced its launch of the new ABA Ethics Line, aninternet, telephone, and SMS-based tool operated by an independent third

party (Convercent by OneTrust) that allows employees, members, volunteers,beneficiaries of our grant programs, and contractors to confidentially and

anonymously make a report or ask a question about conduct or situations thatmay raise ethical issues or involve the ABA’s Business Conduct Standards

(“BCS”).

The ABA Ethics Line offers three (3) easy options for you to confidentially oranonymously report issues 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Online:Independently report issues via the Internet at www.ethicslineaba.org.

Options are available to display the report form in your preferred language.

Within the United States: For those in the United States, call toll free1-800-461-9330 to report the issue with the help of a Convercent by OneTrust

call center representative.

Outside the United States: For those outside the United States, internationaldialing instructions by country are listed on www.ethicslineaba.org and can be

displayed in your preferred language. If your country is not listed, you canplace a collect call to +1-720-514-4400 to report the issue with the help of a

Convercent by OneTrust call center representative and languageinterpreter. The call center supports more than 300+ languages.

By SMS Text:

For those in the United States, send a text message to (872) 276-9794 toreport the issue with the help of a Convercent by OneTrust representative.

Once your report has been submitted, it will be immediately forwarded to the

appropriate individuals within the ABA for review.

You will also be provided a confidential issue access number and asked toprovide a personal password and security question. The access number andpassword allow you to check the status of the report on the ABA Ethics Linewebsite (www.ethicslineaba.org), as well as send and receive anonymousmessages pertaining to your report at any time. If you provided an email

address you will also receive email notifications from Convercent by OneTrustas the report status is updated.
