Local athlete Shannon Munaweera recently won a Bronze Medal at the New South Wales All Schools Athletics Championships. Shannon, who is a member of the Jamison Little Athletics Club, claimed third place in the Under 18 Girl’s Hammer Throw. Shannon’s coach Breanne Clement was very proud of the hard work and training preparation she put into the event. Winning the Bronze Medal also means that Shannon has qualifi ed to compete at the Australian Youth and Junior Championships later in the year. Well done Shannon and best of luck.

Death is one of the most exacting events in life affecting the emotions and mental activity in coming to terms with its reality. Death, in itself, being part of the cycle of life, provides a vast field for contemplation, seeking answers, seeking reason.

Religious belief down through the ages has been attractive because belief has directed itself in the attempt to provide answers, to give reasons. Basically in dying the individual can be confronted with a sudden or if not a slow demise. In the majority of situations death is rarely considered in terms that all of us from birth are growing towards death. Those who mourn the loss of a loved one, when time and words have little comforting effect, can gain strength in recognizing that they themselves are growing towards the reality of dying. It is this recognition that enables the prayer “that I may have a good death” to become a comfort [from the Latin to ‘make strong’] in embracing the emotive and mental effects of death.

Now All Saints day is celebrated by the Church each November. It origin can be found around 200CE when St Gregory of Pontus, in what was known as Asia Minor, observed a festival known as All Martyrs. St Chrysostom who died in 407CE also refers to this festival. In the latter part of the 8th century, All Saints Day was held in churches throughout England, Ireland, France and Germany with some historians arguing that it began in Ireland. By 835CE November 1st became the festival date throughout Europe.

It is in this festival that Christian belief gives to the reality of death a tremendous comfort: it expresses belief in the total

concept of the Church – the living and the dead – that have the beautiful Hope = all things are summed in in Jesus the Christ in the promise of life eternal.

JORDAN SPRINGS WATER SAFETY – NEPEAN AQUATIC CENTREArticle Written + Submitted by: Nepean Aquatic Centre

A: 16 – 19 Lambridge Plac e, Penrith P: 4730 8900 W: nepeanaquaticcentre.com.au

The annual National Energy Australia SwimSAFER week is once again around the corner, this year running from the 22nd to the 28th of November, and is as relevant as ever before. The recently released Royal Life Saving 2015 National Drowning Report reveals that, tragically, drowning is still the biggest cause of accidental death in Australian children under 5. There was also an alarming 30% increase in drowning deaths in children aged 0 to 4, with a total of 26 deaths in this age group (compared to 20 in the previous year), and over half (54%) happened in swimming pools.

Furthermore, more drowning deaths (37%) occurred in NSW than in any other state of territory.

Each year, hundreds of Australian families have a child presented to emergency rooms after an immersion accident. For every child drowning death there are three to four more children admitted to hospital as a result of a non-fatal drowning incident.

Almost one quarter of those children admitted will experience some form of permanent brain damage resulting in lifelong disabilities. A further ten children will be presented who do not require further hospitalisation, but had a close call. The statistics are alarming, so what can we do to make our children safe?

Swim Australia advise that while we cannot ensure our children are ever completely safe around water, we can make them SAFER. The R added to the word safe represents the Risks presented by water. Swim Australia initiated the EnergyAustralia SwimSAFER program to raise awareness and provide education to caregivers and children alike on how easily children can drown, and what steps can be implemented to prevent such tragedies. National Energy Australia SwimSAFER week aims to convey this message by reinforcing the SwimSAFER layers of protection – Be Aware, Be Secure, Be Confi dent, Be Prepared – through a presence at selected Learn To Swim schools, posters, online and social media campaigns, educational materials, CPR buddies, in lesson safety programming and media attention.

Nepean Aquatic Centre is a Swim Australia Registered Swim School who will be proudly participating in National Energy Australia SwimSAFER week 22 – 28th of November. Come down and see what it is all about!

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood ServicesP: 0409 986121 or 47218520E: [email protected] FaceBook: Parenting in PenrithBlog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Last month I spent three days at Westfi eld Penrith promoting AD/HD Awareness Month. Shopping centres tend to bring out the worst in children and parents. Tired and harried parents. Tired, hungry, and overwhelmed children. It can be a volatile mix involving frustration, yelling, smacking, put-downs, and threats of abandonment. I’ve seen adult temper tantrums of extraordinary magnitude.

So, as I go to Westfi eld on the occasions when I am promoting the work that I do, I go with some trepidation about what I will see, hear, and feel. Well, this time I was most pleasantly surprised. On quite a few occasions I saw children who were very upset, having a moment. And how did the parents respond? They stopped to give their child a hug and a kiss. It was that simple. It was heart-warming. The parents realised that their child wasn’t giving them a hard time, they were having a hard time.

I heard Dr Justin Coulson speaking on the radio the other week. He does very good work and has a website called “Happy Families”. He provided an interesting analogy. If your child could not swim and fell into a swimming pool, what would you do? Would you yell at her, and tell her how stupid she is for falling in? No, you would jump into the pool and save her. And then what would you do? You would teach her how to swim. And that act of learning to swim can take quite a long time, involving much patience, practice and repetition - conquering fear, and celebrating achievements.

Children’s behaviour is the same. They are not giving YOU a hard time. Kids are little. They are learning how to manage themselves and how to navigate this big, scary, and wonderful world. They need us to help make things better, and to guide them how to manage their emotions and actions. And they need this, from us, over and over and over again. It’s our job to be the bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind person in the relationship (Circle of Security) and to teach our kids to go forward with courage and care.

And please know this, it is OK for you to ask for and receive help to be the best parent you can be. We are all in this together.

Member for Londonderry Prue Car MP was joined last month by Duty MLC for Penrith Adam Searle and Duty MLC for Mulgoa Sophie Cotsis to launch a community campaign to save Kingswood TAFE from the Baird Government’s relentless funding cuts before it’s too late.

Since 2011, the Government has cut $1.7 billion from education and training, sacked 2100 TAFE teachers and support staff , cut TAFE courses, slashed class contact times and drastically increased student fees by up to thousands of dollars.

A leaked cabinet document has also shown that the Government is planning to strip a further $63 million from TAFE buildings and land through a fi re sale of 27 sites.

Ms Car said her offi ce had been inundated with TAFE students that are worried that will not be able to continue with their studies.

2015 Coo-ee March Re-Enactment

On October 10, 1915, the original Coo-ee recruitment march left Gilgandra with 26 marchers. On November 12, they arrived in Sydney with 263 marchers.

The march was a way of increasing recruits to fi ght for King and Country in the Great War. To commemorate the 100 year anniversary of this famous march, a re-enactment will take place, again beginning at Gilgandra, before fi nishing in Sydney on November 11 (Remembrance Day).

Local residents are being encouraged to support the 2015 Coo-ee March Re-enactment by lining the streets as they pass through the district.

On Saturday November 7, the march will make its way from Glenbrook to Emu Plains and then to Penrith. At 10:00am, they will be at Lennox Bridge in Glenbrook, followed by the Old School House in Emu Plains at 11:00am. It will then makes its way to High Street in Penrith at 12:30pm, Memory Park at 12:45pm and the Penrith Paceway at 1:30pm.

Ruby Productions Presents...The Mystery of the Monsters’ Big BallBy Mal and Jenny Tibbitts and Directed by Jenny Tibbitts

She and her servant Quasi, physically challenged by his enormous hump, manage a creepy hotel that has seen better days. A visit by the famous Detective Shylock Bones and his colleague Doctor Watsup cannot be a coincidence. Nor can the presence of the other guests at the Hotel – a Lord and Lady who may be up to no good. The mystery unfolds in the context of a special event – The Monsters’ Ball – an outrageous event featuring your favourite classic horror characters.

Grandparents’ Day was a huge success at Henry Fulton Public School when it was held last month. Lots of grandparents were able to attend and were entertained by the students and our fantastic dance groups. Afterwards, our special guests were able to visit the children in

their classrooms to look at their wonderful work. Our amazing P &C did a wonderful job organising the special morning tea with delicious goodies donated by our school community.

We also held our Kindergarten Orientation morning for our new 2016 students. Lots of excited and nervous people joined us, with the children participating in fun activities in the classrooms and the parents learning lots of new information about our school. We welcome them all to the Henry Fulton community. Many of these new students will also participate in our KinderStart program during November to become more familiar with the school routine and to make some new friends. During this time, the parents will be able to listen to more important information regarding school life as well as enjoying a tea or coff ee.

The Henry Fulton Follies will also be happening this month. This is our biennial school performance that is always greatly enjoyed by our school community with the theme this year being Christmas.

There are still many fantastic events happening before the end of the year and our students are looking forward to them with great excitement!Sharon Crowley, Relieving Principal P: 4730 4136(Article written and submitted by)

Paddling for a Cause

Fiona Scott MP, the Federal Member for Lindsay joined the Pendragons Abreast on their Paddle Day to raise awareness of the benefi ts of dragon boat racing for breast cancer survivors.

Pendragons Abreast is a local dragon boat crew, comprising of breast cancer survivors - who are at diff erent stages of breast cancer and recovery – and their supporters.

The crew varies in ages, athletic abilities, interests, backgrounds and personal experiences.

Fiona Scott said she commended the crew on their benefi cial work within the Nepean region.

“Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Australia with one in eight women to develop breast cancer in their lifetime,” Fiona Scott said.

“The statistics are alarming with over 15,000 women predicted to be diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia this year.

“The Pendragons Abreast are not only putting a face to these statistics, they are actively raising awareness of breast cancer, as well as providing a benefi cial support network to those who have been touched by the disease.

“I applaud these women and their supporters for the positive and meaningful work they do within the community.”

Pendragons Abreast spokeswoman Gillian Brown said she invited others to join the crew.

“This group has lots of lovely women enjoying each other’s company. We go on lots of outings, we compete internationally and last year in October we went to Sarasota, USA. In 2018 we are all heading to Florence in Italy,” Ms Brown said.

Ms Brown said the action of rowing also helped with the cancer recovery process.

“Dragon boat participation is important for upper body recovery,” she said.

“It’s been proven to keep away lymphedema in breast cancer survivors.”

For more information on the Pendragons Abreast, please contact Gillian Brown on [email protected] or 0413 151 467.

Fiona Scott will also hold two Pink Ribbon Morning Teas (St Marys RSL on November 16 and Lakeside Restaurant on November 20).

All proceeds raised will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT... LLANDILO PUBLIC SCHOOL?

After a long process of implementation, Llandilo Public School will fi nally be starting up before and after school care on the school grounds from the beginning of next year. Sherpa Kids will be

the provider and they have a solid history of catering for the individual needs of students and connecting with their local communities. Sherpa Kids was selected through a rigorous process by a panel that included parents, school staff and Department of Education representatives.

The need for this service at the school was recognised, as currently, students are having to catch buses to care centres, which means that some have to leave school early every day. Many families responded to a survey put out by the school indicating that a before and after school care on site would better meet their needs.

Sherpa Kids Llandilo will provide student supervision from 7am to 9am and 3pm to 6pm. These times may be fl exible depending upon community need. They will give your child a healthy breakfast and will provide a nutritious afternoon tea, all during a program of engaging activities. With the added bonus of homework help, it will certainly ease the burden on a working parent. Vacation care will be provided if the demand indicates this. Sherpa Kids staff can assist you with information about claiming the child care rebate if required.

We look forward to welcoming Sherpa Kids to Llandilo Public School and are eager to begin a long and rewarding relationship with them. If you would like further information, please contact our school offi ce on 4777 4124. We can email you an information fl yer or you can drop in and see us to collect one for yourself –

we are located opposite the IGA on Seventh Ave. The company is committed to hiring local employees, so if you have child care experience and are looking for a position, information is included.

Mayoral Statement – Airport UpdateThe Western Sydney Airport draft Environmental

Impact Statement (EIS) has been released for public exhibition by the Federal Department of Infrastructure and Development.

The public exhibition period closes on Friday 18 December 2015

"Last month we opened the EIS for the fi rst time like everyone else so I can’t comment on specifi c details. But I can assure you, ever since the airport was announced, we’ve been speaking to both State and Federal Governments on a whole range of issues we believe relate to an airport. We have also been actively pushing for the opportunities an airport can bring.

I consider the 60 day exhibition period inadequate to address the level of detail involved and the impacts an airport may have - this airport has already been with successive governments for decades.

The draft EIS is approximately 4000 pages. Penrith Council has been calling for a minimum of 90 days to respond to the draft EIS.

Penrith, along with neighbouring Western Sydney Councils (WSROC and MACROC) have appointed an independent team of experts to go over the EIS to inform our submission. This will ensure we can accurately represent the best interests of our community.

We’re looking for commitments on jobs, road, rail and other infrastructure to support the airport.

For Western Sydney and Penrith residents to benefi t as a result of the airport construction and operation, it needs to be fully integrated and connected with the region – through road and rail. This will stimulate jobs growth beyond the airport.

We also want to see that our natural environment and the amenity of our community is protected. The EIS must accurately address environmental and social impacts to ensure the health and wellbeing of our community is maintained and our beautiful natural environment protected. A key issue is how noise is to be eff ectively managed, this is not negotiable.

Each day more than 65,000 people leave our City to go to work – sitting on congested roads and crowded trains, taking them away from their homes and families. We’ve been consistently talking to both State and Federal Governments on a range of issues including a rail link between the airport and the western line.

Imagine the increased productivity if even before the airport opens, the Western Sydney Orbital was complete and the South West rail line extended through the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area to the western line. This would connect the North and South West growth centres and create access to tens of thousands of jobs within an easy commute." said Councillor Karen McKeown, Mayor of Penrith.

I'm wondering why we can talk openly about birth but we can't about death. What's with that? Is it because we can’t deal with emotions? People get upset, sad

and sometimes inconsolable. If they want to talk, let them talk.Birth stories abound, every time women get together. They talk

about the pain, the drugs, the doctor, the midwife, how long the labor was and if it was natural or caesarian.

These are all acceptable conversations to have but if you mention death, the conversation ends. Why?

I wonder what would happen if you tweeted about how grief has impacted you? Not only in the beginning but a year later or 5 years later.

You want to remember that person who occupied that space in time, your loved one. You want to be able to say their name and tell stories about them. Whether the stories are happy or sad, you just want them to be remembered.

We gather around the new mum and support her for as long as she needs.

This doesn't happen for someone who is grieving. Support is there for around 6 weeks and then you’re meant to get over it and get on with your life.

We're robbing people of telling their stories. Women tell birthing stories their whole lives. Giving birth impacts them so much, it's extremely emotional and is amazing in every way, it just has to be shared.

Let everyone's story be told

It lets everyone know that you had that person in your life,

no matter how long or short a time. It helps you feel that they mattered and added to your life. Telling your story helps you keep their spirit alive and keeps them real for you.

Share Your Story of Grief

Looking to Improve Your Core and Have a Tight Tummy for Summer?

Incorporate these 5 exercises into your strength routine for great results!!

1. Plank: When performed correctly, a simple plank is one of the most eff ective ways to tighten your entire core. Correct technique is the key. Keep your back fl at and your belly button pulled in toward your spine.

2. Mountain Climbers: This vigorous variation of a standard plank kicks the core tightening up a notch. Angling your knees toward the opposite shoulder is a wonderful way increase the intensity even more. Place your hands wider than shoulder-width apart on the ground in a push-up position. Bring one knee to your chest and then back to the starting position, alternate each leg quickly.

3. Russian Twist: Nothing quite brings the burn like a properly done set of Russian Twists. By holding a medicine ball or dumbbell in your hands, the exercise becomes even more eff ective. Sit on the fl oor with knees bent like in a “sit-up” position. The feet should be kept together and slightly off the fl oor. Keep your torso straight and your back off the ground at a 45 degree angle. Hold a medicine ball or dumbbell with both hands. Next, the arms should be swung from one side to another in a twisting motion. Move slowly for a more challenging workout.

4. Knee Tucks: All too often I see people neglect their lower abs in favour of quicker, easier exercises. The fact is that our lower abs typically need the most work, so give them the attention that they need with these Knee Tucks. Start on your back, bend your knees with your feet on the fl oor and knees touching. Extend both arms overhead on either side of your ears, palms facing up. Exhale and bring your knees up towards your chest. Slowly lower your hips back down to start position.

5. Side Plank: Side Planks are much more challenging than they appear at fi rst glance. While the focus is mainly on your waist, due to the stabilising nature of this exercise, you’re also working your entire core as a whole.

Put your feet and legs together as you lie on your right side. Place your right arm under your body and lift your upper body so that your right elbow is directly under your shoulder. From this position, slowly raise your hips from the ground until a straight line is formed from your ankles to your shoulders. Hold the position for a moment, slowly return to the starting position, and repeat.

For best results these exercises MUST be combined with correct nutrition. Avoid processed carbs, packaged or fried foods. Fill up on lean proteins and fresh vegetables.

If you’re ready to take your results to the next level call or email me today and we will get you started on an exercise/nutrition program that will deliver massive results!
