Jonathan Law High School A Caring Community
November, 2014 Volume 16 , Number 3
From the Principal
Jonathan Law High School is a community that exists to maximize the intellectual, the social, and the emotional growth of each student in a safe, stable, supportive environment.
Dear Students and Families, It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us! We have made it through a busy and productive two months of school and as we head into the second marking period, I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your tremendous support of Jonathan Law High School. Holidays are a time to celebrate the importance of family and also the relationships with those you care about. The great strength of our school exists in the relationships among staff, students and families. The collective energy and focus of helping all of our students be better, both inside and outside the classroom, is a shared vision for all of us to be proud of. The busy month ahead brings the continued hard work of our students and staff along with our Homecoming Dance, Annual Powder Puff Game, Thanksgiving Day Football Game and many trips and activities. I wish you all a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving and start to your holiday season. On behalf of Mr. Cavanna, Mrs. Drew and all the staff at Jonathan Law, we look forward to a terrific month ahead. Sincerely, Fran Thompson Mr. Fran Thompson Principal

Freshman Class Dues Slip Each year students are responsible for paying dues. Dues aid in the cost of graduation and activities students are involved in during their senior year. Below are the amounts owed each year for dues. Freshmen are responsible for paying $10.00 by the end of this school year. If you would like to, you may pay dues for all four years at one time. Please make checks payable to: Jonathan Law High School or JLHS In the memo line: Student’s name and Class Checks are preferable over cash since checks are easier to track if there is a discrepancy. However, returned checks are subject to a $10 fee and will not be covered by the school. Students will receive a receipt and a dues card through their advisory teacher once the payment has been processed by Mrs. Lindsay. If you wish to send your payment to the school, please send it to the following: Jonathan Law HS Attn: Christy Ann Lindsay (Freshman Class Advisor) 20 Lansdale Ave Milford, CT 06460 Please return the bottom portion of this letter with the payment in an envelope. Did you know about the great academic support
we provide our students at Jonathan Law?
Mrs. Vallee is a tutor stationed in the Media Center every day
after school from 2:00pm – 3:00pm to assist any student!
All teachers have office hours to assist students for extra
help! Many of our teachers provide help as early at 7:00am!
Some of our teachers are here until 3:00pm!
All students have common time on A-D days from 8:18am –
8:40am. Students can get a pass from a teacher to receive
extra help during that time or even make up tests/quizzes
and other work too!
These Freshmen study halls are in classrooms in order to
provide our students with a quiet place to work. Students
should arrive to quiet study with work to do. Quiet study
halls are NOT to be used as social time.

After 14 years at Jonathan Law it is time for me to retire. My thoughts and prayers will continue to linger with you after I depart.
“Through the years, you've never let me down You turned my life around, the sweetest days I've found
I've found with you... Through the years I've never been afraid, I've loved the life we've made
And I'm so glad I've stayed, right here with you Through the years”… Mr. Kenny Rogers
Blessings and Love from Mrs. Paulette Reeves
COW PLOP
On October 17, the senior class hosted the first Jonathan Law cow plop. Thanks to our custodians, the area behind the field house was sectioned off into 400 equal plots, and fenced around. The senior class sold the plots for $10 each. With the $1000 prize promised and all 400 tickets were sold, the senior class
generated a profit of $3000. A special thanks to Lea Finch for the use of her cow, the senior officers donated money to her charity for her generosity with Cally.
Leading up to the cow plop, the senior class sponsored a spirit week, ending with a pep rally on the day
of the Cow plop.
Starting at 6:00 on the night of the event, the crowd watched eagerly for Cally the cow to poop, while enjoying treats sold by the junior class and listening to music performed by law students. After two and a
half hours, Cally pooped in the square of Law's very own Mrs. Bartolomeo.
After this fun event, the senior class will be focusing on senior clothing and homecoming. Homecoming will be on November 21st. It is both a fundraiser for graduation activities and an exciting event to bring all
the classes at Law together

“For twenty-five years, civilization has survived in meager en-claves, guarded against a plague of the dead. A young woman named Temple wanders this blighted landscape, keeping to herself and keeping her demons inside her heart. She can’t re-member a time before the zombies, but she does remember an old man who took her in and the younger brother she cared for until the tragedy that set her off on her personal journey to-ward redemption. Moving back and forth between the insulat-ed remnants of society and the brutal frontier beyond, Temple must decide where ultimately to make a home and find the sal-vation she seeks.
A powerful story of survival and self-discovery, The Reapers Are the Angels is terrifying, atmospheric, and gripping, from its haunting opening all the way through to its shocking con-clusion.”—Book description

Milford’s 375th Anniversary Celebration! Students had the opportunity to work with professional materials donated by

Athletic Director: VJ Sarullo Phone: 203-783-3574 x1840 Fax: 203-783-3586 Email Address: [email protected] Twitter: @JLHSATHLETICS Website: http://www.milforded.org/page.cfm?p=4920 To all Parents of Student-Athletes: The Jonathan Law High School Athletic Department strives to continuously improve in all areas of our operation. One specific area that is of most importance is our effective communication with families. Whether it is communicating through our twitter account, website, e-mails, etc…, our goal is to get all athletic information out to everyone efficiently and effectively. With that said, we are asking for your help to ensure that we have an outstanding two-way communication system. During the course of our three sports seasons, there are often times that parents have questions or concerns regarding various aspects of our program. Unfortunately, parents are often times reluctant to bring items forward to either the coaches or myself for a variety of reasons. In order for us to deal with issues in the best possible manner, I would ask that you please bring forward questions and concerns as soon as they arise. It is always most productive when we are able to deal with issues immediately rather than days, weeks or months down the road. Our coaches and I are committed to ensuring that everyone in our athletic program has a rewarding experience and we need your assistance in that endeavor. Below, please find information that you may find helpful in regards to communicating questions and concerns with the athletic department. Also, please remember that we enjoy hearing about the positives as well. As always, if anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time. Here is to an exciting end of the fall and to a productive beginning of the winter. GO LAW!!! Sincerely, VJ Sarullo Athletic Director
ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT COMMUNICATION While our expectation is that all of our interscholastic athletic programs will run smoothly, we understand that there are times that student-athletes and/or their parents may have questions or concerns. Both parenting and coaching are extremely difficult vocations. By understanding each other and working together, we can truly make Jonathan Law High School the best athletic program in the state. Below, we have provided communication suggestions in order to effectively answer all questions and resolve any issues. Communication your Student-Athlete Should Expect From the Coach 1. Overall philosophy 2. Expectations the coach has for your student-athlete and for the team as a whole 3. Locations and times of all practices and contests 4. Team requirements, including all fees, special equipment and off-season conditioning 5. Procedure should your student-athlete be injured 6. Discipline that can result in the denial of the student-athletes participation. 7. Specific team rules Communication Coaches Expect from Parents 1. Questions or issues addressed directly to the coach as soon as they arise 2. Notification of any schedule conflicts well in advance As your student-athlete becomes involved in the Jonathan Law High School Athletic Program, they will experience some of the most rewarding moments of their lives. Please understand that there also may be times when things do not go the way that they wish. At these times, please encourage your student-athlete to communicate with the coach first. By doing so, you are fostering social-emotional growth, as well as the ability for them to resolve their own issues. Parent-Coach Communication Generally, at any time, a parent may discuss the following with a coach: 1. Mental and physical treatment of the student-athlete 2. Ways in which the student-athlete can improve both academically and athletically 3. General concerns about the student-athletes behavior While the above are certainly important topics that should be discussed both openly and professionally, the following list must be left up to the discretion of the coaching staff. Please remember that all of our coaches are professionals who have gone through thorough interview processes, annual professional development courses and more. Our coaches are charged to make judgments based on what they believe to be best for all student-athletes involved. Certain issues can and should be discussed with the coach, as mentioned above. Other issues, including the following, must be left to the discretion of the coach:
1. Playing time 2. Tryout procedure/Selection of team members 3. Team strategy/Play calling 4. Performance of other student-athletes 5. Selection of captains 6. Selection of award recipients
It is also important that the established “chain of communication” is followed. General issues that can occur should be handled in the following order:
1. Student-athlete and coach 2. Student-athlete and athletic director 3. Parent and coach*** 4. Parent and athletic director
***We ask that parents not approach coaches before, during or after practices and games. Please contact the coach the next day via phone or e-mail to have a discussion or to set up a meeting.
We have provided this information to further strengthen our overall athletic program as we move forward. We thank everyone for your continued commitment to Jonathan Law High School Athletics.
