January, 2015 Volume 16 , Number 5

From the Principal

Jonathan Law High School is a community that exists to maximize the intellectual, the social, and the emotional growth of each student in a safe, stable, supportive environment.

Dear Friends, Happy 2015! As the calendar turns to a new year, first semester is quickly drawing to a close. I would like to thank our students for a great first half of the school year and wish each one a strong finish to the semester. Please remember that our exam schedule has changed from past years and we will be meeting as full school days during the testing week. I am so grateful to have the opportunity each day to witness our staff in action working to improve instruction, student learning and student engagement in their classrooms. Our ongoing professional development work is allowing us to review data on student performance, test scores and standardized test in order to best address the needs of our kids. Through the work of our professional learning communities, the staff has been able to share ideas, new research, and instructional practices as well as analyze student data, interpreting what the data shows to help them guide their instruction. I have been very impressed with the level of work done through this professional discourse and shared best practices among our staff to help all our students succeed. Each day we all have the choice to make the day what we want it to be, the choices we make today will influence our tomorrows. I hope you have a great start to the New Year and thank you for your continued support and commitment to Jonathan Law High School! Sincerely, Fran Thompson Mr. Fran Thompson Principal

Did you know about the great academic support

we provide our students at Jonathan Law?

Mrs. Vallee is a tutor stationed in the Media Center every day

after school from 2:00pm – 3:00pm to assist any student!

All teachers have office hours to assist students for extra

help! Many of our teachers provide help as early at 7:00am!

Some of our teachers are here until 3:00pm!

All students have common time on A-D days from 8:18am –

8:40am. Students can get a pass from a teacher to receive

extra help during that time or even make up tests/quizzes

and other work too!

These Freshmen study halls are in classrooms in order to

provide our students with a quiet place to work. Students

should arrive to quiet study with work to do. Quiet study

halls are NOT to be used as social time.

Ready….SET….FAFSA!!!!!!!!!!!

Holly Franquet of The College Place-Connecticut will be at Law to help families with FAFSA completion and financial aid concerns. Holly will be here on the following dates: Jan. 6 and 20 and Feb. 3 and 17. Each day will consist of five, 40 minute sessions.

Priority appointments will be given to First Generation students and their families and to families for whom this is the first child attending college. Families who have used this service in the past should not sign up in order to allow others to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. We have 20 spaces available and this opportunity will be first come, first serve. Please contact Mrs.Stofko to set up your appointment @ [email protected] with FAFSA HELP in the subject line.

Filing your FAFSA is an important step in your college planning process. You can file your FAFSA as early as January 1, 2015. Some pointers to get you started: Get your PIN now! You and your parents need separate PINs in order to file your FAFSA online.

https://pin.ed.gov/ File online at www.fafsa.ed.gov This is the ONLY website to use. If you are being charged, you are on

the wrong site. Do not pay to complete this form! You may use your parents’ tax in-formation from the previous year to file, since most tax returns

will not be available on January 1. Once the tax information is available, make the needed corrections as soon as possible.

Check the email you receive to verify that your FAFSA was processed! This is a very important step! Review the information for accuracy. There is also a possibility your FAFSA may be rejected for incomplete information.

File even if you think you “won’t qualify!” The FAFSA is not only for awarding grants. Colleges use the information from the FAFSA to determine your financial aid package from their institution. Even if you do not receive “free” money from the government, you may still receive some from the colleges you’ve applied to

Save the Date – Junior Parent Night The Guidance Department is excited to announce the dates for the Junior Parent Meetings. These

informative meetings will review the college application process and is loaded with great information to get you started on the college search!

We will be offering a Night Session on Tuesday, January 20th @ 6:30 PM

We will be offering a Morning Session on Wednesday, January 21 @ 7:30 AM

Please RSVP to Meg Stofko @ [email protected]

“It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister, Penryn, will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco where Penryn will risk everything to rescue her sister, and Raffe will put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.”— Book description
