Amazingly simple and wonderful.
A Little Background on Our New Hazzan, Bonnie Streigold
Bonnie grew up in Valley Stream, and at a very young age enjoyed singing and being onstage. Her first stage appearance was on Grandparent’s Day in kindergarten where she debuted as Tinkerbell in Peter Pan! She continued to be involved in school choirs and musical theater productions throughout school. She always felt most comfortable in thechoir or on stage.
But it was a nine-day trip with USY that truly changed her life! While in USY, Bonniebegan to learn more about Judaism and what it meant to live a positive Jewish life. She metamazing Jewish teenagers from all over the New York Metropolitan area and made a friendwhose family would have a profound impact on her. She experienced for the first time whatit was like to live as an observant Conservative Jew. Then, the summer before her senioryear of high school, Bonnie went to Israel for the first time! She led services in front of herpeers and she experienced an adrenaline rush that convinced her that this was what shewanted to do professionally. Music, Judaism and teaching were what she loved; now shewas on a mission to become a Cantor!
Bonnie’s musical career continued at SUNY Binghamton where she received a BA in Judaic Studies. She felt extremely blessed when she was accepted into the H.L. Miller Cantorial School at the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in Manhattan. This journey tookher back to Jerusalem for a year followed by four years of study in New York.
Graduating JTS in 2012, Bonnie began her career at two different synagogues in two different capacities. She was the Cantor at Or Olam/East 55th Street Synagogue in midtownManhattan and the Director of Education at The New Shul, which is located downtown.Working in both a Conservative and a progressive non-denominational synagogue taughther to be innovative, experimental and original in her programming. She looks forward tousing all of her skills, talents and passions under one roof and in one community at HERJC!
