My daughter attends Ave Maria University in Florida and my son is a junior at Sedgwick High School. Our parish is St Catherine’s, so we are on extreme opposite ends of the city, but like Father Jirak said to me, “That drive will give you time to pray the rosary,” and he is right. On my way to rehearsal I will pray for all of you and also ask that the choir numbers grow and that you, the congregation, will sing with us every morning in celebration of the mass. Universal Call to Holiness by Carey Boyzuck

How interesting that our second reading this Sunday is from St. James who exhorts us to put o “selsh ambition” and instead “cultivate peace” (3:16-18). The Gospel passage shows Jesus’s disciples arguing about who was the greatest (Mark 9:34). Later in Mark, James and John ask to be the greatest in the kingdom by sitting at Jesus’s right and left hand (10:35-37). They are still hustling to get a spot at the top! St. James learned from Jesus that selsh ambition and self-aggrandizing are ways to gain power in this world, not the next. This shows how most saints are not born perfect, but like everyday people, they grow over time into the people God created them to be. Through failures and triumphs, overcoming sins and by growing in charity, they became holy. This gives me so much hope for the times when I fail to be the “best-version-of-myself,” as Matthew Kelly says.

That brings up the idea of the call to universal holiness that the Second Vatican Council emphasized. Lumen Gentium was the central document of Vatican II. It states, “Therefore, all the faithful of Christ are invited to strive for the holiness and perfection of their own proper state. Indeed they have an obligation to so strive” (LG #42). I am empowered by this invitation to live a holy life; holiness is not limited to priests and nuns, but extends to each one of us as baptized members of the Church. With God as our Father, Christ as our head, the Holy Spirit poured out to us as our sanctier, and Mary as our Blessed Mother, we are each called to be holy, no matter what our state in life.

If you have ten minutes, Chapter 5 of Lumen Gentium has encouraging thoughts about sanctity that can be found in every state of life: religious, married, widowed, or single.

Lord Jesus, divine Teacher and Model of all perfection (LG #40), help me to imitate You and Your Blessed Mother as I strive to live a holy life each and every day.

Changing of Seasons by Bonnie Mason

Fall precedes the death of winter yet represents renewal. The rst ocial day of fall is this Wednesday, and as we nish this year’s harvest and prepare to give thanks, we are encouraged to reect on God’s creation. As the last plants wilt and die, the earth is scattering its seeds, ready for spring. No other season is such a dichotomy.

Fall is nature’s warm hug. Summer has wound down and the days are now as equally light as they are dark. Leaves turn, the world’s palette transitions, and our hearts are lled with warmth. Our thoughts turn to football, pumpkins, apple pie and warm drinks. Many are returning to work and school. There is much excitement surrounding fresh beginnings. Surely, this is a God given opportunity to scatter our own seeds. Spreading seeds of love, compassion, hope and empathy; never have we needed them more.

In our own lives, seasons represent the time we have on this planet. It is often with great sadness that we experience declining health, the withering of relationships and the death of loved ones. During these times faith becomes enduring, but we wait, knowing that a seed has been planted and that there is a new, yet revealed future.

“God has made everything appropriate to its time and season, and has put the timeless into their hearts...God restores what would otherwise be displaced” (Ecclesiastes 3:11, 15).

Our parish was built with the stewardship of generations of Catholics that came before us. The changing of seasons reminds us to be grateful in response to God's gifts. As we feel thankful, we too are driven to grateful action. Through our many ministries we are able to receive God’s gifts and share them in the love of God.

Dr. Edward Sri at Magdalen, Oct. 19Dr. Sri will talk about themes from his latest book, The Art of Living, here at MagdalenTuesday, October 19 at 7:00pm. Open to the diocese.
