KIA ORA TATOU FROM THE COUNSELLORS. As counsellors, term two is often when we start to notice an increase in levels of distress and anxiety in our students, perhaps linked with tiredness, cooler weather, shorter days and busy times at school with assessments. This also tends to be the time when there are more relational issues for students within friend and class groups. I want to let you know how helpful it is for our students when, at these times, parents support their children in facing up to and dealing with the everyday stresses and challenges of life rather than avoiding situations they might find stressful. Specifically, if children are experiencing bullying, they are often reluctant to speak up at school about this for fear of reprisals. This is when our adult experience and wisdom can make all the difference in empowering our young people to take a stand against this. It is important that parents give their young person a clear message that it is absolutely essential to report this to someone at school, and then to reassure them that in doing so, they are reasserting their control over a situation which has probably had them feeling powerless. When young people learn to confront bullying behaviours they:

learn relational strategies to take forward in their lives beyond school

become more self-aware about what they stand for (respect, kindness and peaceful times) and stand against (inequity and unfairness in relationships)

are empowered with the realisation that they can create change to stop bullying behaviours.

It is hugely frustrating for us as counsellors, to hear that bullying has been on-going for a student, and no-one has known because no-one has spoken up. We are very aware of the need to work in a way that eases the concern for individuals that by speaking up, they might somehow “make things worse” for themselves. By keeping the focus on the behaviour, rather than on blaming or shaming individuals, students previously at odds with each other, usually find themselves in agreement about behaviours which are unhelpful and hurtful, and those which nurture good friendships and peaceful times. At times, a disciplinary response is necessary. Counsellors work closely with the year level Deans and if this is the most appropriate response, we don’t hesitate to pass this on for Deans to follow up. We are also very open to hearing directly from parents if you have a concern for your child. We appreciate working with you to enable your child to deal with relational challenges. SHAVE FOR A CURE Hi there! This year, 3 people are participating from our school in this event, Frances James, Fisher Wang and Anna Douglas. We are trying to raise $6000 for this great cause and would really appreciate it if you would be able to donate. About 6 people a day are diagnosed with Leukaemia (Blood Cancer) a day in NZ. With a survival rate of about 26%, only two out of those 6 people survive this horrific disease. So please give generously for this cause. The money that you donate goes towards funding for research to find a cure for blood cancer and also to provide support for those families and individuals who have been stricken down by this disease. “We are shaving our heads on the 4th of July, the last assembly of the term in front of the whole school”. Any amount is appreciated as it all counts towards our goal. There are two ways to donate; you could bring money to the school and give it to either Frances, Fisher or Anna. Or you could donate online on this link: https://secure.leukaemia.net.nz/registrant/TeamFundraisingPage.aspx?teamID=108620&langPref=en-CA

ARTICLE OF INTEREST FROM A ‘SPORTING’ PARENT: One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money and spend so much time running around for your child to play sport?" “Well I have a confession to make: I don't pay for my child's sports training or his/her kit, pads, gum shield or boots or even balls. So, if I am not paying for the sport, what am I paying for”?

I pay for those moments when my child becomes so tired he/she feels like quitting but doesn't.

I pay for the opportunity that my child can have, and will have, to make life-long friendships.

I pay for the chance that my child may have amazing coaches that will teach him/her that sport is not just about game plays but about life.

I pay for my child to learn to be disciplined.

I pay for my child to learn to take care of his/her body.

I pay for my child to learn to work with others and to be a proud, supportive, kind and respectful team member.

I pay for my child to learn to deal with disappointment, when he/she doesn't get that try he/she hoped for, or dropped the ball despite having practiced a thousand times, but still gets up and is determined to do his/her BEST next time...

I pay for my child to learn to make and accomplish goals.

I pay for my child to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight.

I pay so that my child can be on the pitch instead of in front of a screen... I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for sport; I pay for the opportunities that sport provides my child to develop attributes that will serve him/her well throughout his/her life, and give him/her the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen for many years, I think it is a great investment!

On the day itself, cupcake competition entries will be judged. This will be complemented by food for sale at an International Food Festival, comprising of foods from as far-flung places as Thailand, France and Japan, to name but a few.

All JPC teams were due to travel over the weekend, however the JPC/Rep/Lakes side had an easy ride as Tarawera defaulted on Friday morning easing up selections for the 1st XV reserves.

The U15’s travelled to Papamoa in the U15 Championship, with two wins already in the bank. They again started strong and rushed out to a 14 nil lead and they were dominating all aspects of play. This unravelled a bit when they had a player sent to

the bin for a head high tackle. Papamoa were awarded a penalty try and were back on the attack to take the score close to 14 – 12. JPC woke up and managed to score another try while their player was in the bin to push the lead out to 21 – 12 at halftime. They then took the game away from Papamoa dominating the second half to win 57 – 19. Great games by Greg Laws, Jesse Pakinga-Lawson and Campbell Haigh. Strong games again from Jayden Fraser, Karsen Dyball, Alex Fladgate and Finn Gielen-Lilley. They played to their strengths and were again a committed bunch of boys who have a great future. The 1st XV travelled to TWOM for a titanic clash. There was not going to be much separating these teams at the end of the game. The commitment from both teams on attack and defence was immense. JPC managed to get an early lead with a try by Connor Humphries to take a 5 – nil lead. TWOM fought back and scored under the posts, but failed with the conversion attempt to bring the game back level at 5 – 5. The game in the 2nd half was torrid, with both teams emptying their tanks and playing helter skelter rugby. JPC missed two penalty attempts early in the half and TWOM had a try disallowed. Going into the final quarter it was anyone’s game however JPC got a penalty in front of the posts and with a bit of indecision in the team on who would take the kick, Connar Raimona stepped up and slotted the kick. 8 – 5 and time to play with TWOM throwing it all at JPC. The team defended well and did not concede all penalties hanging onto the 8 – 5 win. This was a great win and takes JPC to 3 wins from 3 in the Division 1 championship. Across the field were players who deserve mention however this was a hard fought win and all deserved to be man of the match. Off to the ball with a smile! This weekend sees all the teams play at JPC and we would appreciate all the support we can get. The 1st XV will be playing undefeated Te Puke for the coveted Te Kani Shield. This is a symbol of strength in BOPSS Rugby and we have an opportunity to take it from Te Puke. The U15’s are three from three and want to continue their winning ways. Saturday 28th July 2018 3 or 6 Hour Foot or MTB Rogaine Whakarewarewa Forest, Rotorua

The Great Forest Rogaine is a 3 or 6 hour, foot or mountain bike team rogaine open to all ages and abilities. The New Zealand Secondary School Rogaine Champs will be run alongside this event in 2018 with Juniors competing in the 3 hour Foot event and Seniors competing in the 6 hour Foot event. Mountain bike categories are not available for the NZSS Rogaine Champs.

What is a rogaine? Rogaining is a team sport based on navigating to checkpoints using a map. Competitors are given a map with all the checkpoints on it and the checkpoints are worth different values. Competitors have a defined amount of time to visit as many of the checkpoints as possible. Teams plot their own route around the map, choosing how many checkpoints to visit and in which order. During an event each team finds their way round their selected course, adjusting their plans as appropriate. The team with the highest score within the time limit wins. In the event of teams with the same total score, the fastest of these top teams wins. A Rogaine is a test of strategic route choice, map reading skills, physical fitness and team work. Rogaines by their nature cater for all levels of ability, as teams can choose a route and checkpoints appropriate for their skills and fitness. It's also a great family sport for this reason. For further information on Rogaines you can check out the Orienteering NZ website (http://www.orienteering.org.nz/about-orienteering/rogaining/) and also the New Zealand Rogaining Association website (www.rogaine.org.nz).
