ROLLER SKATING Northern Championship results for Artistic Roller Skating, Three JPC students represented Rotorua on the 13th & 14th of May, they all skated very well and showed fantastic team spirit, there results are Claire Self 1st Preliminary figure, 1st small show skate, 1st Large Show Skate, Myah Kay, 1st Large show skate, 2nd small show skate Rosa Hook 1st Int Cadet freestyle, 1st large show skate, 1st small show skate, 2nd Quads

RUGBY 2017 Over the weekend we had all of the JPC teams playing in their respective final grading rounds. A mixed bag of results with the weather been a prominent feature of the games played in Rotorua. The combined U14 WHHS/JPC/REP team played one of the big hitters Taupo Nui a Tua and the result did not go their way. With this composite team been up against two of the favourites in the last two weeks it begs to wonder what the grading games actually prove. They will now be put into a division that will be more suitable for these boys. The U15 team played Tauhara and came away with a good victory 27 - 12. The boys played well and will now await the decision on what grade they will feature in this season. The Reporoa/JPC XV played in Reporoa against the RBHS IV XV. The RBHS team got out to a 19 - nil lead in the first half and that is where the score remained. This team is improving on a weekly basis and it is good to see these boys enjoying their rugby. We are still looking for more players to add to this squad. This team has a bye this weekend so rest up and look forward to your game against Rotorua Lakes High on 3rd June @ WHHS. The JPC 1st XV travelled to Whakatane to play the other undefeated team of the grading rounds Whakatane High School. JPC got off to a good start out to 15 nil inside 15 minutes. They played hard and fast and managed to keep the Whakatane team scoreless in the first half. At half time JPC had taken the lead out to 29 nil. Whakatane came out hard in the 2nd half however JPC were able to turn the tables quite quickly and scored within 5 minutes of the half starting. JPC then did not take the foot off the throttle and went onto win 60 - nil. This sees JPC finish top of their group and are awaiting results to see who they will play this weekend in a semi final at Rotorua Lakes High School. This will be at midday.

Kia ora tatou from the Counsellors. This Friday (26th May) is Pink Shirt Day From the NZ Mental Health Foundation: Pink Shirt Day is about working together to prevent or stop bullying by celebrating people's difference and promoting positive relationships. Pink Shirt Day began in Nova Scotia, Canada in 2007. A group of students decided to defend a kid who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In a show of solidarity, many of his peers turned up to school the next day wearing pink shirts, and Pink Shirt Day was born. This year we have already committed to financially supporting other worthy causes so will not be having a pink shirt mufti day. However, students can still support this anti-bullying message through the purchase of pink wrist bands available throughout this week. At JPC we are strongly committed to standing together against bullying and hope that all will support this worthy cause. Also ... keep an eye out for staff members on Friday looking stunning in pink! Bullying itself is an issue that invites a strong emotional reaction and it is helpful to keep in mind that what we stand against is the bullying behaviour, not the child involved. When it is your own child being targeted it is easy to vilify the culprit, but actually, most cases of bullying occur within friendship groups and children often hope to restore friendship once the bullying has stopped. For this reason, it is really helpful for parents to keep calm and focus on stopping the problem behaviour rather belittling or maligning individuals. Even the worst “bullies” have been good, kind and loyal friends at other times. The following link is well worth a read. It gives valuable insight into the role we as parents and educators can play in helping our young people acknowledge the effects of their actions on others. http://faithit.com/day-decided-daughter-will-not-choose-friends-raising-bully-leslie-blanchard/ Finally, in line with our commitment to nurturing a safe school environment, we will be undertaking student safety surveys within the next 2-3 weeks. Students from all year levels will be asked to complete a non-identifying survey about any experiences they have had this year around bullying at school. They are invited to name any students, including themselves, who they think are the targets of bullying. Also, any students they have noticed who are bullying others. The results of the survey are collated and the counsellors and year level deans speak individually with every child named. At JPC we believe it is important that all students have the opportunity to contribute to a safe and inclusive school and we have found this an effective and non-threatening way for all student voices to be heard. Nancy Macmillan and Neil Carter (Counsellors)

FROM THE SPORTS COORDINATOR 2017 BASKETBALL John Paul College Basketball has seen a major growth this year from 64 students playing last year to 100 students this year. The National statistics for Secondary school shows a growth of 23% for Basketball in 2016. The Basketball games have started with mix results across the Board. Some coaches have a bit of work to do, with some improvement in skill and understanding of the sport as the season progresses. Strong early season performers, Year 8 Boys and Year 8 Girls, Year 10 Boys A team and Senior Boys a and B teams. Attendance to trainings, is sitting at 96%, which is awesome for the student coaches. The Year 8 boys team is aiming to go to AIMs Games, the Senior Boys A are aiming to qualify for the top 24 schools’ competition, first we must make the top 5 in Waikato / Bay of Plenty Zone. The Year 8 boys and the year 7/8 girl’s teams have a one-day tournament on Friday 2nd June. Two of our Senior Boys, Alex Norton and Luke Gordon will be travelling away with the Rotorua u19 Basketball team, to compete in China in July. Arthur Faulkner, Staff in charge of Basketball. SPORTS FEES Our sport programme is a user pays system, if fees are not paid, then that puts our school in deficit. The fees students pay; cover competition entry, transport as required, uniform maintenance or

replacement, sports equipment, training venue costs, hosting other schools, travel and accommodation

as required.

Unfortunately, some students put their name down for a sport, then chose not to play, but do not inform anyone. If you decide not to play, you must inform the person in charge of that sports code, or drop a note to the school Sports Director. Also there are students turning up to play a sport and the coaches let them play, but they have never registered or paid the sports fee. Prompt payment of sports fees is appreciated.

BOP SECONDARY SCHOOL SWIMMING CHAMPS It was an exciting day of challenging, action-packed events as swimmers from 18 schools competed in the Bay of Plenty Secondary School Swimming Champs in Taupo.
