Joey Hays 2014

A generalist at heart, my interests in landscape architecture build

from a foundation in construction, sculpture, math and photography.

From a background making small scale gardens and well crafted

details, my interests now include regional scale planning and urban

infrastructure along with the maintenance practices that inform them.

I believe landscape architects can reframe challenges as opportunities

by understanding the social and environmental context of each site as

simultaneously unique and part of a larger story.

access to local healthy food as the new civic and regional identity for Charlottesville.

Strategic infrastructural placement requires neighbors to share spaces.

A collaboration with robotic artist

Gregory Witt, Green Roof Roller

Coaster was one of eleven BigBots

chosen to be part of Robot250, a city-

wide community art and technology

program designed to challenge public

perception about what defines a robot.

Based loosely on bad science - that

plant’s feelings can be monitored

through the electrical conductivity in

their leaves, Green Roof Roller Coaster

uses a wireless signal from the plants

in the cars to a micro controller that

sends them on a ride when the levels

stabilize or they become “bored”.

Gregory Witt is largely responsible

for the design. Fabrication was shared

equally aside from CAD drawings,

programming and wireless controls.

A roller coaster to entertain

plants offers an absurd

spectacle for visitors.

In the 1890s Pittsburgh city engineers

thought it was more economical to

combine sewer and storm water into

one pipe and carry it directly to the

rivers to reduce disease and flooding.

In the 1950s the accumulating waste

forced ALCOSAN to build 90 miles

of pipes to intercept the combined

system and divert the water to a

centrally located treatment plant

(asterisk). During dry weather, the

interceptors (purple) carry waste

water to the treatment plant, but when

it rains (as little as one tenth of an

inch) they divert the overflow directly

into the rivers. An average rainfall in

Pittsburgh is one quarter of an inch.
