Congratulations on a very special week at Jindabyne Central School. Students have

participated in the Rugby Day at Cooma, our K-12 Cross Country event in Jindabyne and

the highlight of the week- Harmony and Anti-bullying No Way Day.

The work that staff and students have been involved in to ensure that the 2016 National

Day of Action against bullying and violence was a success has been phenomenal.

The story and script writing, student performances, poster designs, raps and audio visual projects have highlighted

not only the significance of student voice but the exceptional and thoughtful talents of our students.

I look forward to the Easter Hat Parade and raffle and wish all staff and students the best of celebrations over the

Easter period. Remember to take the opportunity to visit Lake Light Sculpture to view the work of our Visual Arts

students.

Good Luck to all students in Year 12 as they prepare for the Exams in Weeks 10 and 11. Ensure that you have revised

and completed the preparation for exams provided to you by your teachers. Many of our staff have provided some

great Facebook or Edmodo type platforms for connection to peers and teachers as a means of revision and

additional instruction. Make use of all resources that are made available to you.

The P&C

As indicated in a recent letter to parents, The Annual General Meeting of the P&C was held on 16 March and a

number of positions were not filled. In attendance were 12 parents, representing the 740 students enrolled at our

school.

You may not want to volunteer for an Executive position on the P&C but would be prepared to come in with a group

of parents to attend to some of the gardens, volunteer at the canteen or assemble seating within the playground. I

understand many parents are frustrated by the requests for money for discos, harmony day, bulbs, however in our

attempts to continue to support the P&C, many teachers are conducting fundraising. I would ask that you consider

your voice as a member of a valued team and be part of the Parents and Citizens Association.

Parents, as partners in the education process, have a right and a responsibility to play an active role in the education

of their children. The P&C enables parents and citizens to meet together to determine the needs and aspirations of

the school community.

P & C meetings provide a forum for parents to learn about the activities at the school, raise concerns and have input

into the decisions affecting their children. Through parent volunteers, the P&C runs the uniform shop and the

canteen. The P & C also raises funds for projects as diverse as the school band to landscaping of the school grounds,

computer equipment and transport subsidies for excursions.

Do you have a concern or complaint?

I would also like to take the opportunity to provide a guide for parents, carers and students in relation to making a

complaint. If you have a concern or complaint about any aspect of our service we’re keen to hear from you.

I encourage you to contact the school to talk about your concerns, as most problems can be solved by talking with

the staff, your child’s teacher or the Principal. It is also best to let us know about your concerns as soon as possible.

What can a complaint be about?

You can make a complaint about: • Any aspect of the services we provide • The behaviour or decisions of staff • Practices, policies or procedures. How to make a complaint

1. It is best to discuss your concerns with your child's teacher first. Make an appropriate time to meet with them or phone the school and ask for an appointment with the teacher.

2. If you are not happy with the result, or if you do not feel it is appropriate to talk to them, phone and make

an appointment to discuss your concerns with the principal.

3. You may bring a friend or relative to be your support.

4. If your complaint is about the principal you will need to contact the Director in our area. Our Director, Public Schools NSW is Matthew Brown and his contact number is 62005000.

5. If your complaint cannot be resolved in an informal way, we may ask you to put it in writing. It is important

that you include specific details of the situation and tell us what you would like to happen as a result of your complaint. We can help you to put your complaint in writing, if you require it.

Will my complaint be confidential?

The person dealing with your complaint will advise you if confidentiality applies to your case, but generally it can't be guaranteed. If your complaint is about another person they have a right to know the allegations and be given a chance to respond. Can I make an anonymous complaint?

Yes, you can make your complaint anonymously. However, it may be difficult to resolve an anonymous complaint if you do not provide your contact details and further information is required. What you can expect

How your complaint is managed depends on what it is about. Most complaints can be resolved quickly and informally to everybody's satisfaction simply by talking to the teacher concerned or the principal.

Some complaints are covered by a particular policy or by special legislation (e.g. occupational health and safety or anti-discrimination policies). You will be advised if this is the case with your complaint. You will be told the name of the person who is dealing with your complaint and their contact number. Occasionally more serious or complex complaints require investigation. These can take a longer time to resolve. If this happens, you should be informed of the progress and the result of your complaint by phone or in writing at regular intervals until the matter is resolved. If you have not heard from the person handling the complaint within a reasonable time, call to ask them what is happening. What are the possible results?

1. The complaint is upheld and one or more of the following actions may be offered to you: • Action to fix or improve the situation • An apology • An explanation • An admission that the situation could have been handled differently or better • An assurance that the event complained of will not recur • An explanation of the steps that have been taken to ensure that it will not happen again • An undertaking to review the department's policies in light of the complaint. 2. Your complaint is not upheld. The reasons for this should be given to you clearly. What if I am not happy with the result?

If you are not happy with the result, you may ask for a review of your complaint by contacting the school education director or the section of the department that assessed your complaint.

Korea Connect Program by Heidi Shvetsoff AP Primary School The Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia priority provides the opportunity for students to celebrate the social, cultural, political and economic links that connect Australia with Asia. This Term, teachers from the English department and Year Six have volunteered to connect with a Korean school via video link. Students will be involved in discussion and exchange of cultural ideas and values. Jindabyne Central School has committed to this program, organised through Dy Myoung-sook Auh, Senior Lecturer-School of Education at University of New England. The process involves an initial video link up for the teacher to meet and book in class meeting dates. This in itself is quite complex, having to balance school holidays, exam periods and timetabling between the Korean school and Jindabyne central School. In Term 2 the classes will meet approximately 2 times per term for the remainder of the year. We thank teachers Hannah Moloney, Sharn Stewart, Julie Lamond, Julia Cane and Ethna Brave, who are all playing an important role in this process.

Year One’s embrace Harmony Day and St Pat’s Day! By Anna Thornton

In preparation for embracing cultural diversity on Harmony Day, 22nd March, 1T enjoyed celebrating a few aspects of Irish culture with their teacher, Mrs Thornton, for St Patrick's Day. We viewed online parades from Dublin and learned about the importance and significance of the colour green in Ireland. We finished the day by designing shamrocks for our special headbands and finished up with a short stint of Irish tricolour face-painting!

1T was very fortunate in having a special visitor that same afternoon in connection with our history, science and English learning. Koby's grandmother, Liz, came in to tell us all about her childhood in New Guinea. We learned about what she ate - including crocodiles and turtles; how she walked to school through deep mud; and enjoyed open-air cinema viewings.

Liz also brought in two beautiful native dolls and explained that the little shells that the Indigenous New Guineans wore were often used as money.

Orange is the 2016 Harmony Day colour and all three Year One teachers - Mrs Symons, Mrs Bush and Mrs Thornton - got together with all Y1 students to enjoy some fun movement and crafty activities. Mrs Bush read a beautiful story about spreading angel dust happiness in playgrounds; we enjoyed team-building games such as Jumbled Number Groups and made a variety of crafts such as headbands, badges and cards for our friends. We finished with some group dancing to a lively Irish jig. All the children would like to wish everyone a very Happy Harmony Day and to remind all of us that 'our diversity is our strength'.

SECONDARY NEWS The Aurora College Residential Week

The Aurora College first residential week was held 29 Feb – 4 Mar at Elanora on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Many activities were scheduled including Taronga Zoo, Sydney Institute of Marine Science and Inquisitive Minds – Hands on maths activities. Pictured left with other Aurora Students are Maddy Ross, Karly Henley, Samantha James, Katie Beck.

Year 7 History - Investigating the Ancient Past

Students have begun their Secondary History studies by examining the processes used by historians and the

terminology appropriate to the study of history. They have explored the role of historians, time, written sources and

artefacts, excavation, archaeology, heritage and conservation. A highlight of the term has been students engaging

with their own family history and sharing this will the class. Students in Mrs Borcherds’ class enjoyed sitting outside,

under the shade of a tree, on a sunny day sharing their family’s heritage from the “Story Seat”. The students

excitement about their past was infectious and some amazing experiences were shared. More recently, students

have been researching an archaeological site for their assessment task where they have to take on the role of a Head

Archaeologist to write a diary of experiences during a dig.

Pictured are Caroline Kastak and Patrick Pendergast who took their peers to past generations in Eastern Europe and Ireland with their fascinating recollections.

Mathematics News

You may have been asked a few questions lately over the dinner table regarding finances Years 9, 10 and 11 have been learning about different methods of interest such as simple and compound interest, income, calculating tax, refunds and debt. In Year 10 and 11, students have been given the opportunity to design Excel spread sheets to calculate interest, income or tax payable. They have used their mathematical knowledge to create formulas that will calculate interest, income or tax quickly and easily using a spreadsheet. Here is a sample spreadsheet using random taxable incomes designed by McKinley Phillips.

March 14th was International Pi Day and JCS students continued the tradition of reciting Pi to as many decimal places they could remember. Years 12 were the winners as they were a little cheeky in entering a team as opposed to an individual entry. They were quite lucky to have Amos Clements, a previous winner of Pi Day in their team and the students were able to enjoy their prize, an apple Pi Pie at Sundance Bakery.

Mathsonline has been a welcomed addition to the Mathematics student’s repertoire of online resources. This fabulous resource provides students with brief online videos of each of the mathematical skills necessary for the NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum and worksheets for the students to practice their skills. All Mathematics students in Years 10, 11 and 12 are expected to purchase this resource for $20 and it is optional for students requiring extension or assistance in Years 7 to 9. Please pay directly to the front office to secure your licence.

Name: James Heimann What Years were you at JCS? 2008-2014

Can you recall a memorable event whilst at JCS? When I heard “pens down” in my final HSC exam. Euphoria. What is one of the best things that happened to you at JCS? Fostering my love for creation (not to be confused with creationism) in Visual Arts and Drama, and my love for the analytical examination of game shows (particularly ones set on tropical islands), which I developed in Society and Culture. Who was your best Teacher while at JCS and why? I’m not going to answer this! My response would send shock waves through the staff room, and JCS doesn’t need that kind of drama. But to this day, Mrs Gillroy is one of the funniest, most energetic people I’ve ever met. What did you do in the year after you left JCS? (e.g Uni, TAFE, Work) I moved to Sydney to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sydney. I also ate a lot of junk food and drank a lot of coffee. I’m severely malnourished. Where are you living now? I live in Sydney at a college on the University of Sydney campus. What are you doing with yourself now? I spend my days hoping to one day be contacted by JCS for a “where are they now?” section in the newsletter to fuel my crippling need for attention and to attempt to stay relevant in the school that I once considered myself the Don Corleone of. Today that day came. I’ve had my answers prepared for months. What are you hoping to do in the future years? Most people hold realistic and sensible goals for their future like starting a family or buying a house. Mine is to get cast on Survivor. I find the idea of becoming a washed up reality television contestant quite appealing. Any advice to the current students at JCS? Don’t blame your circumstances, your teachers or your school on your ability to achieve results. If you want to do well it’s entirely up to you as an individual. Where Are They Now is a series of snapshots of what our former students are up to compiled by Mr Paul Livissianos

JCS at the Cooma Rugby 7’s competition

The Year 7 & 8 and 9 & 10 Rugby teams travelled to Cooma on Monday

to represent JCS at the Cooma Rugby 7s competition. The boys all played

well and had a great time, demonstrating great sportsmanship and

excellent behaviour. There were several standouts in the Year 7 & 8

Team, including Griffin Swan, Mitch Thrum and Ben King who all worked

hard in the 7s format. The Year 9 & 10 team only had a few reserves,

with Jackson Stewart, Cooper Swan and Jake Clare playing extremely

well. A special mention to Kirra and Rhianna Burke who refereed on the

day and showed great maturity in keeping the boys in line.

Harmony Day is important to the students of JCS by Bronwyn Brandon

It provides a chance for fun and relaxation, away from the classroom, all the while learning about respect and acceptance of peers and different cultures.

We have the chance to talk, eat and learn in a safe and exciting environment surrounded by friends.

The Harmony Day Concert is also a safe platform for us students to express our ideas and values artistically. This included class drama performances, student made films, and songs about the effects of bullying.

It’s a much more interesting way to learn about these important messages, rather than from textbooks.

Harmony Day is very valuable to the students for the lessons it teaches and for the enjoyment it brings us on the day.
